This is in my stack of titles to eventually watch. I hear it is phenomenal. Even film critics Siskel and Ebert loved it when it came out in the 90's.

It’s good, but be advised it’s pretty slow overall, but it addresses some interesting ideas before Hollywood got ahold of them.

Don't bother with the Live Action release. It was pretty bad, has a different story, and doesn't hold up at all like the original anime.
