  • Chester Zoo's baby Orangutan Myrtle and her mother Sarikei have the most amazing
bond. This video shows just how relaxed and confident a mother Sarikei is.
They are a truly wonderful Bornean Orangutan family.
Sarikei is an experienced mother orangutan who has had previous offspring including her son Tombol who lives with her and the rest of the Bornean Orangutans at Chester Zoo
Chester Zoo is has a very successful record of Orangutan births at the zoo and most of the Orangutan Mothers are able to rear their own young without the assistance of zoo staff, this is largely due to the expert care and facilities the World Class Zoo provides for the animals.
The current animal population have had valuable experience with babies and have observed relatives caring for young, using this learning and experience to enable them to rear their own offspring
Birth of critically endangered orangutan at Chester Zoo
Bornean Orangutans have been considered critically endangered since 2016 with an only an estimated 100,000 left in the wild. They are seriously in danger of extinction which makes the birth of this new baby orangutan very special indeed
Congratulations to Chester Zoo on the birth of the new baby orangutan from @apetracker

Sarikei is doing a super job watching both her kids. And OMG, could Myrtle's hair get any cuter?

I am always amazed at the size of the hands on orangutans, even the females. Sarikei could place her palm on Myrtle's chin and still have her fingers cup the top of her head.

Gotta have the large grip for branches and such. Their thumbs are also a lot lower down on their wrist than ours

To: @bajscast - Ha, ha! Oh! True indeed.
I believe their phalanges are naturally curved also, to assist with grip.
It is that with gorillas their arms are very bulky and hairy so their huge digits are less incongruent. It just appears to me it is most notable on female orangutans.
A good squeeze from them would leave a few broken and dislocated fingers of my own. Ha, ha! and I don't think I would escape until she decided to let go.

@@petermoody6147 If you vocalized your discomfort, there's a decent chance she would let go. Orangutans don't know how much stronger they are than we are, so they have times when they don't understand until a noise of pain is made - those they do understand. Obviously it would be a different story if you managed to upset one into attacking you but, that's extremely rare, hah

@@petermoody6147 It's an interesting fact for sure! I wouldn't be wanting to test it myself but just from accounts of people working with them especially in jungle school it seems to be truthful. Fascinating creatures. Have a good day!

Myrtle is way too cute to be on the ground like that. Where are the climbing structures in this place?

I love the hairdo on this baby. It literally looks like someone took a curling iron and styled it to stick up everywhere!
