You pronounced "malady" perfectly! As a Southern boy, however, "frigid" is probably unknown to you in daily speech so it's pronounced like "fridge"....which is kinda appropriate now that I think of it. Enjoyed the video and hope you can follow up on that article of the soldier via microfiche at a library. I've heard "odie's oil" is good for reconditioning wood but I'm no expert on that. Have a great day.
Thanks for the links! I love the old. But I’ve given up on our thought of moving to west Tennessee or North Carolina, like we were going to. I hate heat & humidity & y’all got way too many snakes. I wouldn’t be able to go swimming even. To cool off.. so guess we’re stuck in Massachusetts. The suck-butt idiotic liberalist state in the country…except CAL. They’re their own country! lol Your channel sure wouldn’t be appreciated up here. The powers that be would wanna tear everything down, erase history! History we maybe can LEARN FROM! But I LOVE IT & so appreciate all of you guys. No spring chickens traipsing through meadows. Uh uh, the way you tackle all the weeds & vines. Makes me tired just watching. Have a great rest of your day, brother! Michelle in Boston
Joined fan group. How much are note cards?? I just want a. Photo with blank inside. No writing anywhere. I can’t seem to figure that out, but they’re so lovely!
Malady...yes, you said it correctly...meaning a sickness or condition of one's self...I do believe the mirrored piece is a basin stand...very nice...dont refinish it...just clean and polish the wood...thanks for showing us your neat room...
I have to agree with the above sentiment. Give it a good cleaning with Murphy's Oil Soap for the time being, and go back and do a detailed deep cleaning later on. Once it dries, give it a good oiling with a quality furniture oil.
My mother used it her whole life. She would slather that stuff thick every night and go to sleep. She passed at 85. I've used it during winter months on myself. It is still inexpensive and good.
I am an old man and to pass the time I make picture storybooks. In these books I include ephemera. It would be a goldmine to find the ads and art work included in these papers. Journalers see value in the past and build their books around these things. So, no, Robert, it's not boring seeing you look through the papers!
I loved this episode. Its great to see you starting to preserve the amazing furniture. I would treat for wood worm. Then use a Bees wax polish to bring back its beauty. The news paper was so interesting. looking at the films showing the fashion available and local history. Can't wait for more.
I see so many videos of old houses soon to be demolished. It's nice to see one coming back from the dead. I'd really like to see some before and after pictures some day. If the house was still being lived in the chairs would all be in that room because it's cold outside and that room has a fireplace.
Loved the old newspapers, especially the pretty ladies in their dresses in the adverts. If the paper is very fragile or icky you can scan the pages, if you want to keep a copy. You could even make printed copies on newsprint and reline the drawers.
Robert! I think I have the perfect top for your wash table. Meaning i started a quilt top with civil war replica prints. Long story short I think it would perfectly cover the top if your interested? Curently it measures unfinished at 41-1/2 L ×21" . H I can finish it this coming week and send it out to you. Its an hourglass block quilt pattern I used. I was going to make it a full size quilt but got bored with it lol 😅. Im not asking money for it. It would be a gift. My quilts are always made for someone as a gift. 😊
@@THEOLDBYRDFARMVLOG I Just ordered the backing fabric and binding fabric for your upcoming gift 😊 its from Etsy so ill get it by the 26th. Unfortunately the Material I had to go with it wasnt enough... lol so goes the sewing/quilting craft 😅. I cant wait to get it finished and sent to you. 👍
I really enjoyed this, Robert. It's the perfect thing to do on a cold winter's day: hanging out and looking at antique things. I love the mirrored cabinet, It very much reminds me of things my grandparents had. Thank you, and stay warm, Robert.
I live in a home that was built in 1856. Luckily it has always been occupied. But I am only the 3rd owner. Also very fortunately the house is about 90 percent original. Windows, doors, floors, fireplaces, and room arrangements never changed.
I have always used Murphy's oil soap to clean my pieces...allow to dry completely...then I put on a coat of Old English Scratch coat...allow oil to absorb24 hours and wipe any residue not absorbed...works great and is quite easy...
I love Murphy s Oil Soap! You mix it in a bucket of water then use some elbow grease. It doesn t have any toxic fumes and is pretty gentle to both you and the wood. When it s clean, I woul d start wiping it down with lemon oil.
For the wood check out Formbys Wood Refinisher. For initial cleaning I usually wipe down with mineral spirits. It takes off surface gunk and doesn't soak into the wood.
Hey! Im an American living in Sweden, love your videos! I am am a historian educated in California. Interesting to see how you are rebuilding your old house and keeping the history of your town alive!
like I always say you never know what you will find! old news papers were used for so much in old homes! it is nice to see them from the war years. you can go to the library and go to the micro phish and find that day. and read the entire article . and see all the items within the paper at that time! you will be surprised. especially the cost of things! nice video take care Robert!
Love the antiques and furniture Robert. Your house is amazing and like the work you have done on it so far. You done a lot of work outside on your land also and lots of hard work too. Enjoy watching your videos and I always can't wait for the next one!
If you grab a bar of soap and rub it along the wooden runners it will slide much more smoothly. You will need to wipe that wood with some serious wood polish. It is probably pretty dry so you will need many applications till it soaks in. It can crack more as it dries out. I suspect there would have been a marble top for that washbasin.
"New Life Furniture Masque" is esactly what you need to help restore moiste to the old furniture. New Life is used by Museums and is a superior product. I purchased an 18th centurey French piece recently, and the wood was very dry and brittle. New LIfe made an amazing improvement and restored much needed moisture. Good Luck! Great job with the Old Byrd Farm House!
I was given a dresser that had belonged to my grandmother. There was an old newspaper behind the mirror, and we framed it. Also I use Watco oil on wood pieces with steel wool.
Robert, I think if you just vacuum the old washstand and then wipe it down with some Murphys Oil Soap in warm water it should lift the dirt off. I’ve also had luck with automotive hand cleaner painted on with a new brush. But don’t let that stay on too long because it can take the finish off. It’s perfect for your old farmhouse!
The newspapers are awesome!!! I recently moved into a 1902 farmhouse located in Missouri, and under the old linoleum, I found tons of 1943 newspapers in PERFECT condition, talking about the war and littered with swastikas. It's awesome to see you uncovering history and I love your series!
Love your interest and enthusiasm about everything. I'm the same way when its things like old articles. All part of the history of your area. Very far out ❤
I wonder if that newspaper is archived somewhere with the letters….History of my favorite! The letters from the past makes it so real.❤. Loved hanging out with the dogs and you on a cold day! Couch dogs are the best!
That little dresser with a mirror that had 1940 newspapers in it was called a commode. They usually had a marble top. They had a china bowl and pitcher placed on it for washing up. These were very common before indoor plumbing.
Hey Robert, I was right about the jar being a Pond’s jar!!! 😊 What a great find…. Everything in that your showing and your house reminds me of my grandmother and mother. All the memories are flooding back. Your work has really captured my attention. Looking forward to your next video. 🙏😊
My 1st comment did not upload so I am simply saying thank you for your content. I cannot afford a donation but you deserve all the credit you can get for your hard work.
I love the way the people in your area in Georgia , especially you Robert, are deeply rooted in family history and can trace back as long as 100 years or more. The connection is so amazing keeping memories and family alive. Sure beats the anonymity of living in modern apartments.❤
I have 2 platform rockers. One has a metal part with patent 1890. The other platform has a leather piece instead of metal. The rocking chairs need to be protected from sun and rain. You will get other donations if you take care of the antiques.
Watching from Illinois three days after this was made. We can sympathize with you being cold. You can never have too many chairs, Robert. Each one is different and has its own story. Some chairs or rockers without arms are for sitting in while sewing. Carry on . .spring always follows.
Annie knows what kind of a room it is ha ha. The wash table aka vanity is pretty cool. I guess it would have just been called a wash table. Nothing boring in reading history.
I use Old English wood polish, which is an oil. It comes plain and dark. I use the dark on my antiques it helps keep the patina and recovers the wood. I love it.
Lemon oil is a great moisturizer for rejuvenating antique wood! Wow, you have a lot of work ahead of you but being surrounded by antiques is always a happy place to be. Greetings from Ontario, Canada!
We called the dresser with the mirror a commode. Bowl and pitcher sat on top. Linen in the drawers and a chamber pot in the door. Beautiful piece. It would look great in a larger entryway.

Love the old furniture.hope you find the right oil to moisturizer for that beautiful furniture. I have a few pieces from my grandmothers. The beginning of the 20th century
I think the desk-looking pieces with mirrors were called vanities. The one you have, with a marble top, would likely have been called a "side board" and had a bowl & pitcher. (Don't swear to that, but that is what I 'm thinking.)
Ohhh Robert it was a great video especially the newspapers..wow did you see from the first paper that there was an ad for Colored? As far as the wash stand... Howard's "restor a finish" (oil)a long with their "feed 'n' wax" (beeswax) after a good wash with Murphy's oil has done me well many times. Sorry if I missed another comment of the same.

The mirrored piece is called a dry sink and is where people kept those large pitchers and matching bowls. Murphys Oil Soap to clean and moisturize.
You pronounced "malady" perfectly! You are not boring Robert. The newspapers are very interesting to me.
I like them,too.🤓
I’m glad you enjoyed!
Those newspapers are a gold mine! What a history.
use orange oil to moisturize and preserve the wood, plus it gives the room a real nice smell. We use it on all of our antique furniture.
Murphie's Oil Soap.
That top on Eastlake should be a granite/ marble top outlined to its shape! It’s just beautiful 😍
Yes missing a stone top!
I think he said that Dan has the top.
Hope Dan has it. Love the distress on it too
Maybe go to a countertop store. They may have some small off-cuts of marble.
More ancient rockers than a Stones concert there Robert 🍻
🤪
Lol

My late grandmother never went anywhere without her Ponds…❤ I miss Dan, it’s been awhile.
My mother used it her whole life. She would slather that stuff thick every night and go to sleep. She passed at 85. I've used it during winter months on myself. It is still inexpensive and good.
Same with my grandmother.
I love Ponds face cream. Cold cream not so much.
My Grandmother too. I miss her so much.
Mine didn’t either. Loved her ponds.

I enjoy seeing the dogs so comfortable on the furniture. Annie seems to own the couch.
For old, dirty wood, I use a mixture of boiled linseed oil and turpentine. Cleans and nourishes the dry wood. Do it outside though... it's smelly!
Watching Blue and I think Annie attacking your vacuum is so funny.
Wood cleaner: Murphy's oil...can be purchased at Walmart or other box stores such as home Depot.

YES LOVE THE BASIN STAND...piece of marble WOULD SURE MAKE THAT STAND POP...AND YES LOVE OLD NEWS PAPERS...VERY ENTERTAINING..THANKS ROBERT.
I love the very polite gossip in the personals of old newspapers

Great video, Robert. We use Murphy’s Oil Soap to wash wood furniture. You can find it in most supermarkets.
Love Murphy soap
Yep, I posted that too, great stuff!
Sharon here.... a product that's been around a long time, Forby's furniture products. Great stuff.
I used Formby refinished…..it was easy & woud work a miracle on that washstand!!

Beeswax is good for old furniture 🐝 I use it on my old clock cases 😊
You don't need anything else.
My Grandma glued all kinds of magazine papers in the bottom of dresser drawers in lou of shelf paper. Flour and water paste was the glue.

The public library can help you with the missing newspaper article. You have the essential information: the date, the pages, etc
Annie knows what kind of a room it is ha ha. The wash table aka vanity is pretty cool. I guess it would have just been called a wash table. Nothing boring in reading history.
This piece is a commode, for the bedroom, the door opens to place your chamber pot out of sight. I have an oak one similar.
You can get the basic muck off of wooden furniture with Murphy's Oil Soap
I love those decorative dogs. They make it homey. Leta
I use Old English wood polish, which is an oil. It comes plain and dark. I use the dark on my antiques it helps keep the patina and recovers the wood. I love it.
You can use lemon oil for furniture on that !! Will help keep from the wood getting drier and shine the wood up.
Lemon oil is a great moisturizer for rejuvenating antique wood! Wow, you have a lot of work ahead of you but being surrounded by antiques is always a happy place to be. Greetings from Ontario, Canada!
You have done soooo much work. Another interesting episode. Thank you for your interesting channel.
Murphy oil soap for cleaning wood. Then use Liquid Gold for oiling the wood.
You have come a long way on your farm. Its amazing what you are doing.
Thank you!
We called the dresser with the mirror a commode. Bowl and pitcher sat on top. Linen in the drawers and a chamber pot in the door. Beautiful piece. It would look great in a larger entryway.
Exactly. So many don't know about old furniture, what it is or what it was used for.
That is a washstand with a mirror and it is Eastlake, my favorite.
Eastlake will have carving on it, but sometimes it’s called spoon carving. It’s very different from Victorian, which will be very curvy.
Clean with Murphy oil soap. Furniture butter after will do for a while.
i enjoy going through old papers and learning what was happening so long ago. I think I would take a lot longer time going through that stuff than you cuz I would get lost in the history and what stories items could tell if they could talk.
Always interesting Robert. Keep it coming!
I find the newspapers to be very interesting. Obviously history is why I subscribe to this channel!🤓
So much beautiful things
Love to see the old newspapers. Spent many years living in Jasper Ga. Always great to here history, Back home in Northern Michigan , and Ga will always be home away from home
I like old papers and things.
My grand mother and mother both lined every drawer with newspaper. lots of neat reading when we cleaned up there homes.
Check drawer sides and bottoms for manufacturer info. Maybe even on the chest bottom or back. You phone can film the chest bottom.
Love the old furniture.hope you find the right oil to moisturizer for that beautiful furniture. I have a few pieces from my grandmothers. The beginning of the 20th century
I so enjoyed this relaxing day at the farm with you.
I woke up took the dogs out this morning it was -2°F with a wind chill of -25°F right how we have a heat ware its 12°F have a great day Robert
I think the desk-looking pieces with mirrors were called vanities. The one you have, with a marble top, would likely have been called a "side board" and had a bowl & pitcher. (Don't swear to that, but that is what I 'm thinking.)
Eventually every room will look as nice.
