    Synopsis:
Efforts to move Britain into the modern age don’t sit well with the people of the small village of Anderia Marsh, who have claimed a right (going back to Henry III) to evade government-imposed import duties and taxes. And when the government decides to curb this right, the whole village quietly rises up in a comical rebellion. After their vessel runs aground during a storm and is impounded by the British authorities, local smugglers must find a way of disposing of their contraband brandy cargo before it’s discovered by the Customs Officers.
    Reviews:
I believe it was G. K. Chesterton who described himself as a "Little Englander." To those of us born after WWII, it is hard to fully grasp what he had in mind; which is the reason why I like Green Grow the Rushes, because I think it gives some idea of what Chesterton meant. It is ostensibly about a boat that became stranded with a load of brandy. But the subtext involves the conflict between officials of the British national government and the locals and their local officials who attempt to thwart the government by invoking laws and immunities dating back to feudal times. In this sense it is a libertarian classic which reminds us that so-called feudal Europe was in fact a complex tapestry of autonomous localities, fiefdoms, principalities, etc., under a relatively weak (by today's standards) central state. The movie manages to convey a sense of nostalgia for a type of little England with its absurdly dressed officials and independent-minded locals who stand in contrast to and are suspicious of the suited technocrats who descend upon them to change their customs and plan their lives.

This is not a thriller. It's a typical post-war British comedy of the whimsical variety.

Some of the words in this movie are extremely profound. Make friends with pain.....never a truer statement. The only certain thing in life is change, we never own anything. Life becomes a little easier.......🙏

I love this film. But it's more a whimsical comedy than anything else.

Marvellous. 'Don't deserve to be governed'. Would that the government would come to the same conclusion.

Wonderful film!! I love Roger Livesey and Burton so young! Honor Blackman became quite the sexpot later in her career. Just loved everything about this movie!! Thank you! Thrilling but not a thriller!

There doesn't appear to be any scenes where: "the whole village rises up in comical rebellion"

At least the person who runs this channel doesn't change the title and use the same template (or AI like chat gpt) for the synopsis of every movie, and cut the credits and title sequence, often the theme song too. Then they are disingenuous enough to claim that all the movies on their channel are licensed from the copyright holders.
There are at least a couple doing this, and because they mostly upload older classics like this, you've probably seen some of them.
