- His Holiness the Dalai Lama calls Sogyal Rinpoche "disgraced" and stresses that nobody should follow the teachings of any lama without question - not even from himself - stressing that they must live up to the teachings of Buddha and what society expects. He also reiterates his advice from 1993 that lamas who behave badly should be exposed in the media. TRANSCRIPT IS BELOW

(With all due respect to the Dalai Lama’s English skills, I have attempted to correct his grammar, without changing the meaning)
“I feel some of these lama institutions have some sort of influence of the feudal system. That is outdated and must end - that feudal influence. Then eventually a lama institution creates lama politics [DL laughs heartily]. That’s very bad.
An individual lama’s disgrace doesn’t matter, but it gives a very bad impression about a monastery or a monk. Very bad. So we must pay more attention.
You should not say, “This is my guru. What guru says I must follow.” That’s totally wrong! Buddha himself mentioned, “You must examine my teaching”. Similarly if one particular lama says something, you examine whether this goes well according to Buddhaʻs teaching or according to the circumstances in society. Then you must follow. If the lama says something; if you investigate and it’s not proper, then you should not follow the lama’s teaching. Even Dalai Lama’s teaching; if you find some contradiction you should not follow my teaching.
As far as Gelugpa is concerned, Lama Tsonghkapa clearly mentioned; if a lama teaches something that is against the dharma it should be avoided and opposed. If the lama’s teaching is in accord with the dharma it should be followed, if it is in discord with the Dharma it should not be followed.
Many years ago in Dharmasala at a Western Teachers Conference, some Western Buddhist teachers mentioned some Zen masters and Tibetan Buddhist Masters had created a very bad impression among people. Then I told them them; these people do not follow Buddhaʻs advice, Buddhaʻs teaching. We cannot do. So, the only thing is to make it public, through newspapers, through the radio. Make it public!
These lamas, although they don’t care about Buddha’s teaching, they may care about their face [points at his face, indicating shame]. I told them at that conference, almost 15 years ago I think. Now, recently Sogyal Rinpoche; my very good friend, but he’s disgraced. So some of his own students have now made public their criticism.”

The most important thing in this speech and in my opinion is not to follow a lama or a guru without using ones own brain. No one should believe that you can only advance on a spiritual path when you follow the instructions of a teacher. One needs to find out if this instructions or advices are leading us to our own Buddha Nature. Only being devote and following the instructions of others makes as to slaves. But connecting with our real nature should lead to freedom. If organizations are only serving the teacher instead of being helpful to realize our real nature, then they are sectarian Organizations with a big spider in the middle. As well words like "his Holiness" or "his eminence"" are outdated and should be eliminated from Buddhism. If a Buddhist Teacher is not a monk, then it should be possible for him to have sexual relationships. But only on the level of equality and not from the place of a spiritual authority like Sogyal has done
Tibetan and now even other lineages of Buddhism are based on the hierarchy of gurus and gurus of gurus of gurus... I don't remember reading anything about the need for keeping some lineages and hierarchies, during Buddha's time, though. Buddha was sleeping on the floor like his followers. Are there descriptions of Buddha seated on thrones in literature? There are on pictures, yes, but that is not history.

In the Gospel, masters like Sogyal Rinpoche are succinctly called false prophets: if the word is at odds with the deed, if he teaches one thing and does another, you need to recognize him as a hypocrite and a false teacher, and not mumble about a misunderstanding.

Sogyal was not a monk. He was a layman. Please don't make that mistake. Remember that Jesus said there would arise many false teachers, but remember that there are also many false students, and many stupid people in general. Samsara is always full of the same old same old stuff. Why be so upset? "Even if the sun rises in the West, the Bodhisattva has only one path." ~ Suzuki Roshii. Keep your mind on what the Buddhas taught and make sure YOU don't goof up!
Sogyal was indeed a layman, and there's nothing wrong in itself in having sexual partners. What WAS wrong was a very long period of appalling abuse (sexual, violence, emotional abuse) of very many of his closer students. We should indeed be upset about this - and bring such matters into the light, so hopefully reducing the chances of future abuse by Buddhist teachers. A very real and significant problem.

As a Buddhist monk,Sogyal Rimpoche clearly knew he was not following the 3rd precept ,yet he carried on abusing these women for his own sexual gratification using the excuse of Self realisation for these women if they obeyed him.
Its a great pity he was not willing to practice the basic Buddhist teaching, he was not a monk, he was a self appointed leader of a sect,who lived by double standards, he was no better than an ordinary worldly person who has no interest in spirituality, at least they have an excuse to do whatever they like within the law.
Buddhist monks should have the utmost control over their minds, what good are the teachings they advise everyone to follow if they don't work for someone who is supposed to be a serious teacher of truth? empty words.
I spent a small fortune on Rigpa tapes ,books and videos in the 90's ,they have all been disposed of.
Its not just Buddhist teachers, its priests of all faiths that regularly pop up as hypocrites and perverts...no wonder people turn away from religion.

No one else is living your life so the person to deepen and trust in is your own self. No one else is you! Your own connection to the divine doesn't need a middle man or someone else to bow down to.

I am a huge fan of DL and I live for the dharma and think the world needs it. But I got 'approached' by Sogyal myself years ago, felt very uncomfortable and got away. I do question why so many of the high lamas (including DL) have been to Lerab Ling more than once (one would take that as outright support of him)? I have been groped also by the DL's close attendant (who now has centers in the eastern USA) and the DL's elderly long term cook, both in the DL compound. When I reported the assaults they just seemed baffled why I would complain. In this purification age, it also seems Tibetan Buddhism needs purification of the misogyny and culture, and the obsession with 'crazy wisdom'. Then we can save the dharma (given that is the priority). I have even heard Rinpoches say that perhaps it will be western women who will mostly save the dharma on this planet.
My understanding is that if your 'teacher' breaks his vows or samaya, you have no worries about your own vows to them.
ps - Try suggesting to a lot of tibetan men that the next DL might be a woman :)

The scandal may be related to the so-called Highest Yoga,which is tantric sex that is mentioned in Tibetan Buddhism and also mentioned by the Dalai Lama in one of his books.In Taoism, there is "Technique of the Bedroom"("fang zhong shu"in Mandarin),supposedly also a spiritual practice that involves coitus.Do serious Taoist practitioners such as those of the White Cloud Temple of China talk of it in their lectures to laity?I doubt so.Buddhists should ponder over the Highest Yoga,or other"sacred" sexual practices seemingly mentioned even by Tsongkapa,Padmasambhava in their writings,questioning if they can lead to Enlightenment.Did Lord Shakyamuni Buddha teach such things?It seems that even the Dalai Lama talks about "spiritual sex"in his book,seemingly saying that the practice of Highest Yoga is required for Enlightenment.Correct me if I am wrong on this.Besides criticising Sogyal,he ought to clarify the practice of the Highest Yoga,and ascertain to all Buddhists,once and for all,if it is Buddhism. Methinks anything even remotely pro-sexual cannot be Buddhist teaching,whether Theravada or Mahayana,especially so after I have read the Shurangama Sutra.The Shurangama Mantra contained in this Discourse is precisely meant to save Ananda from sexual violation by a prostitute,who employed a celestial incantation to lure Ananda.If one still has sexual desire,one is still in the Realm of Desire,above which is the Realm of Form,above which is the Realm of No-form.A Buddha transcends the Three Realms.How then can He be teaching"spiritual sex"as a practice to attain Enlightenment?Read the Shurangama Sutra carefully,even if others say it is a "low-class"Sutra or a fake Discourse.What is more important is the insights contained therein and whether they can bring one closer to Enlightenment.If someone tells you a certain Discourse is fake,ask him or her to explain,in detail,why it is so.He or she must carefully explain the substance of the discourse.Likewise the Dalai Lama should expound the Highest Yoga of Tibetan Buddhism.

Very interesting. The key to me as a Buddhist from another tradition, is that there needs to be asked where is the compassion in all of this?, that is, compassion either for the very real victims of the sexual abuse or for the lamas.
The idea that the Lamas are to be put on a pedestal is definitely at variance with Buddha's essential spirit and yet to lower the Lama's down in order to debase them is also certainly at variance with the Buddha's teachings. The truth is we must transform our hearts and minds so that we are living Buddhas not followers of others and so that we can transform our world one step at a time.

Everybody has missed the essence of knowing your own mind ..... there is a great episode on "orange is the new black " where the inmates begin to elevate another to make her like a guru because they need to believe she has the ability to save them and transform them. Sogyal is responsible for his own behaviour but in the balance you will find that many of his students got the wisdom sooner than others. Have never felt the need to be a devotee of anyone who is an adult. Having listened to his teachings for over 20 years and other gurus they all say they are human..... even the Dalai Lama.

How do you expect his holiness to know everything from 2012 when there wasn't anyone who informed him...sogyal student can decide about what's right or wrong... Why haven't they know the reality of buddhism... i agree but i know the lamas high lamas have known about these rumours for years and there are other so called high lamas who are not following the teachings , what of the poor ladies who are damaged and suffering now , bully lama are not rare i know the dalai lama speaks the truth ,
I hope it will not become a shame for buddhism, also it has nothing to do with Buddhas pure teachings, the dharma. But we should see that a real high Rinpoche and very good teacher as Sogyal is only a human being and that also developed practioniers have to check the samsara every Moment and to check their motivations and Actions. It doesnt mean that if all the investigastions against Sogyal are right that he has to pay the Price for it, and like the DL say, check every Moment everything.
Dalai Lama says that Sogyal is his good friend and supported Sogyal for years by visiting his centre in France and taking numerous photos with him. I guess Dalai Lama is not all knowing realizing what would happen he still visited many times? Seems people Dalai Lama trusts are not always reliable?
Dalai Lama said that teachers like Sogyal should be confronted and if they don't change, they should be publicly humiliated and their faces put in newspapers. And futhermore Dalai Lama said Sogyal is his good friend (which I find strange). How can Dalai Lama be friends with someone who has done all the things Sogyal did? The point Dalai Lama said he should be exposed and in the media.
Dzongsar Kyentse said we should not basically expose these people in the media because the issuue is bigger than just one person (Sogyal) as his punishment will be in vajra hell. By exposing him in the media like it was in the German newspaper it brings overall damage to Dharma because people lose respect for Buddhism and it's teachers. The advice from Dalai Lama and Dzongsar Kyentse contradict each other sharply.
Adam Dawson in my opinion Dalai Lama said that so people know which not to follow by mistake for well being of other he might have said that. He always says religion is secondary level so he care other as same human being and want no more exploitation without unknowingly.
@Namgyal Kyorashar, The Dalai Lama should not say he is good friends with someone who has alleged molested, raped, groped and sexually seduced over 60 women. Sogyal may be a big lama, but he is not big anymore. He may be rich and famous but that will not protect him from the law. The Dalai Lama should not tell the world Sogyal is his good friend. Why is Dalai Lama good friends with someone who has committed so many alleged crimes and we will see more unfold. This does not make the Dalai Lama look good.

Sogyal Rinpoche was a great Teacher and a great Discpline master. The West dont Deserve him to call him such names and never even met him is just plane ignorant. His books especially the Tibetan book of Living and Dying was Amazing. I know many other Lamas falsely accused that have been Call many names such has a Womanizer rapist and thief and some of the students just flirts with the master to make them completely inlove with them until they are satisfied and leaves them. Dzongsar Khyentse and Orgyen Tobgyal Rinpoche was very close with Sogyal Rinpoche but runs aways when his own western students falsely accused of rape and abuse. Rigpa has basically removed him from his seat . Whats even more funny is that there have been many Gelugpa Geshe that have been Accused off sexual abuse or just abusive. Yeah you got these quotes from doctor togden, a supposed lama himself, who calls his lineage 'aroter'.
But the main thing here I want to say is that doctor togden said he would be available for anyone from the Rigpa sangha, who needs help or wants to talk!
The thing that I find hilarious is that those who've turned from Rigpa, have categorically stated that they wont have anything to do with this him and wouldn't even post doctor togden's statement on their websites, which are critical of SR. That says a lot!
So - be responsible for yourself! HHDL has still a great appreciation for Sogyal Rinpoche.
Why? HHDL quoted the Je Tsongkhapa's teaching of "Not the Guru, but the Dharma". The Kalama sutta mentions the same thing.

Too little, too late. There is no excuse for the abuse of power. We don't need to follow lamas or the Buddha. We just need to follow the Dharma, the true natural law. The ancient Egyptians, who were wise in these matters, called it Ma'at, the natural balance. What goes around comes around as Sogyal is about to find out.
Before the Dalai Lama talks about other teachers, he should stop hugging women and holding women's hands for long periods of time.
There may well be evidence that i am an idiot,. Arent we all for spending so much time on this. My comments are not related to any ' evidence' about Sogyal Rinpoche but the lama on the throne whom i still do not agree is Neten Chokling Rinpoche.

If from this you aren't satisfied, then I ask you to do some online investigation as to who that master on the throne could have been! The year was 2013, the place was lerab ling, now it's over to you to prove it wasn't NCR. And I say this with a bit of humour, but you can't just keep looking at a grainy video and say it's not him.

There is no evidence because he isn't a monk. He was when he was a child, but dis-robed before his 20's.
Articles on Buddhism-Controversy explain that Sogyal Lakar is not a monk, not ordained as a monk, but he simply liked to wear the lama dress (to get more followers, obvious).
Great White the robes he wears are not monks robes. They could be as easily a Japanese kimono. No, that is your interpretation from Western point of ignorance. HHD is wearing monks robes and says he is "just a monk" which I am only now getting considering his world position. That is not to say that Sogyal's choice of attire does not benefit a sense of otherwordliness and exotica for us Westerners which in itself could be a form of manipulation. I'd rather think it clever salesmanship. Can you imagine if he walked out in trak pants, t-shirt and runners. Not the same impact wouldn't you say.
What HHDL doesn’t say is that Sogyal Rinpoche brought him to the West for the first time in the 70’s. SR created the event for the famous San Jose, California Dzogchen teachings, among many others. HHDL wouldn’t be there talking if it weren’t for SR.

It is the responsibility of the students close to him to protect themselves. If they don’t like him they can walk away. The ones that stayed close, especially Joanne Baltad, who wrote the letter that went public, were ambitious political climbers, and in her case a pious church lady who shamed others. I was there.

HHDL says also : Lama disgrace isn't important.. As far as i understand HHDL's Teachings : Important is the Dharma (s)he teaches,so not his /her personal life, the honesty of the Sangha. Sogyal Rinpoche kept always Dharma on Top,and now very wisely goes into Retreat following the Advice of his own Teachers.:Seed of this western so-called politically correct isn't always the Way to go forward beyond our concepts is my personal little experieince. and that is, what counts! Training to widen-up my Compassion, letting-go Ego is such a complicated issue in the West and a real Challenge to face each One of us, to see the Result whether it makes me a better human or not. Every day of my life I use something invaluable that I learned from Sogyal Rinpoche. Not a day goes by that I don’t feel gratitude.
I completely agree that from an entirely self-interested, ego-driven point of view you can focus on the benefit you got and not care less if others suffered, as long as you got what you wanted. From a compassionate perspective, the suffering of others should be held above your personal satisfaction.

Sogyal Rinpoche is a great master and he will hardly harm other. Rinpoche aims to help other's and spread happiness, so please believe what Sogyal Rinpoche says. Rinpoche says from his heart. May peace prevail on Earth.

No Michael, they weren't his most senior students. His most senior students are now in Lerab Ling, 900 of them.
Yes, I would say 3 were pretty close to SR, but not one of them were his senior students. I know six of them and the two i don't know were his drivers in the USA.
