As long as we are alone this is possible. But when you are in a family there arise circumstances that test your emotions and we become slaves to varied feelings like anger, sorrow ,fear etc sometimes for the safety and well being of our loved ones and not necessarily for ourselves. Then it becomes difficult to stay unattached and calm. Do I make sense?
it is possible to be unaffected no matter what. if one is not sound of mind, then they will find conflict and suffering even alone in a beautiful monastery.

In reality there is no subject and no object. One only can be manipulated if they believe they are a passive bystander in life. And even then one will project and accuse perceptions of being manipulated even when no one is trying to do anything you.
