I was blessed as a kid and teenager watching Marshall Faulk, LaDainian Tomlinson, Adrian Peterson right after... I think Derrick Henry is the RB right after. Amazingly consistent RB's breaking records which sets them apart from those 1-2year RB's.

His 2003 season might have been his most underrated one that he ever had in his career. Over 1600 rushing yards 100 catches for over 700 receiving yards and he put up those kinda numbers for a team that went 4-12 that year and ended up with the number 1 pick.

    • @nengehtardzer2839

I posted a similar comment on how the chargers were trash in tomlinson's first couple of seasons and how they over used him. That 2003 season is a testament to what I was talking about. Those stats might be the single greatest performance for a running back as whole for a single season, and this was years before he broke the single season td record.

This video was also a sneaky highlight video for Lorenzo Neal (#47). Probably the last great full-time FB in the NFL. He was trucking people for LT, and kept right on moving. Teams just don't use a real FB very much anymore, and that's helped slowly kill the RB position. That big first hit is on the RB, not the FB leading the way.
I got to watch most of LT's home games in college as well (TCU). He came in right after I graduated. No one could catch him if he got past the line. I saw his 400 yard/6TD game against UTEP. They had nothing to stop him. The crazy thing is, his Freshman season the team went 1-10, and they had him playing Fullback. Coach gets fired, new coach puts him at RB, and the rest is history.

You made a great point about the death of the FB position affecting RBS. It makes so much sense.
I’ve been wondering for years why it felt like workhorse backs have even shorter shelf life than they used to. RBs used to pound the rock out of I with a FB paving the way. Now, they often run from spread and have to make a man miss or absorb a blow.

The powder blues, the black visor, the sharp cuts and most admirably the humbleness from #21. From then on, I forgot all about Americas Team and have been a Chargers fan. This man to me was the coolest and he had the complete game to back it up. Rarely missed a game in his prime and he was a leader not vocally but by example. The 2001 Chargers probably had the best back-to-back draft picks of all time. Ladanian Tomlinson, then Drew Brees.
LT really provided some tremendous hype around the team, growing up in San Diego around this time, it was understood, he was THE man in this city. Safe to say his character matched up with his play as well. (Heck, he won Walter Payton Man of the Year the same year he broke all the touchdown records and led the Chargers to 14-2.) Of course, being a Charger, he has no Superbowls to show for it, but he really doesn't need it. He's just amazing.

The most complete RB in NFL history. Always on the field, great runner, good pass catcher, and he was good for pass TD or two a season. 2nd Best RB of the 21st century, Top 5 RB of all time!

There was nothing about him that was more complete than Payton, Smith, or Faulk. Or even Marcus Allen. Allen had more total yards, more rec. yds.; plus, 6 passing TDs of his own. Payton was as complete as any back ever, and more complete than 90-some %; plus I think he had like 9 passing TDs.

When football was football. When the goal was to break your opponents will by running the ball again and again. THIS is what football is.

It's crazy how highlights from the early and mid 2000s nowadays feel like the highlights from the 70s-80s did then.

L.T. definitely my 3rd fav RB of all time behind Barry and Marshall. However some crazy Ish 48 touches in a game. Man the NFL was different back then now a days a back's lucky if they get 15 touches.

My first nfl game I was 13. I lived in Orange County and My dad and our neighbors drove to San Diego and it was the game LT broke the single season rushing record against the Broncos. Dad bought me an LT jersey at the stadium on that day too. LT has been my favorite player and I’ve been a chargers fan ever since… and let me tell you it’s been a lifetime of disappointment lol. Can we get one ring please?

Look at some of these games and the amount of touches. 2002 W13, 37 carries and 11 catches. backs today would get sore just looking at those numbers. The definition of a workhorse.
