I have always idolized Priest Holmes more than any other player. I chose number 31 in little league football just because of that. Barry Sanders was 5’8 200-205 lbs and was the greatest running back to ever take a handoff. 14 consecutive 100 yard games (all-time record), 2,000 yard club and MVP in 97. Offensive player of the year in 94 & 97. Led the NFL in rushing 4 or 5 separate times; he did it all. Also had the record for most AND most consecutive 1,500 yard seasons. And averaged 5 yards a carry his entire CAREER. He was unreal. If he didn’t retire at age 30 he’d be the only back in history with 20,000 yards. Which I think is crazy, how do you forget a name like that, with a guy who was putting up one of the greatest running back seasons of all time multiple times.
The top comment being about Barry Sanders is indicative of why this video holds so much value. I know all about Barry Sanders, I'm a lifelong NFL fan, and will take a great running back over a great passing offense 10 times out of 10, and besides for some fleeting mentions of "The Priest" when I was like 7 years old, I never heard much of Holmes' story. This was a fantastic video, the care with which it was made, the energy the host embues, and the finesse with which the editor weaves the story of one of the most incredible athletic primes is enrapturing. I went into this video with a pale memory of Priest Holmes, and I came out with an immeasurable amount of admiration for him, and his coach. They really represent what the Athletes dream is all about. Fantastic video. So insane that this all happened AS Priest reached 30 and beyond, which is usually the "experation date" for most backs, let alone ones with 3 massive knee injuries.
That 3 year period (01-03) Priest Holmes was arguably the best RB in the league and one of the most valuable players overall. It just goes to show that all certain players need is the right opportunity and a coach that believes in what they can do within there system.
He was a little faster version of Emmitt Smith. To me at that time, he was the best RB, just as a RB. Though he could catch, Marshall Faulk was more gifted in that. If injuries didn't kill his career, he'd be a HOF for sure
Priest was such a beast, I agree he was arguably the best during that period. We were spoiled back then overall though with the talent at RB basically league wide. Not like that anymore. KC seemed to be smart grabbing great RBS who are overlooked on rosters, and QBs! Look back in the Montana time, they went and got Allen from the Raiders where he was really misused all his career. Chiefs always have been wise picking talent

Truly Priest Holmes is a Hall of Famer. What he did in his time with the Chiefs was Phenomenal. He overcame a lot coming back from those injuries. A true Warrior.
I love Priest. As a young Chiefs fan he was my very first favorite player. But he just didn't have enough health or great seasons to be in the Hall unfortunately. Same deal will happen with Jamaal Charles. When he was healthy he was better than anybody in the league he just wasn't healthy enough to build the resume the Hall wants.
@@Matt-cr4vv not a good enough explanation for me. Realistically what he did in a short time is Hall of Fame alone. No one else has done that from where he worked from.
@@Matt-cr4vv Priest had a short career but so did Hall of fame running backs Gale Sayers, Terrell Davis, Earl Campbell, Leroy Kelly, Floyd Little and likely more I forgot. Not only that but statistically Holmes tops most of them. Holmes has a more compelling case for making the hall of fame then you would think.
Went to church with him in High School. GLPT. Went to UT with him and he never got his due but he always worked his tail off. Watched him get overlooked by undeserving others in College and the Pros. Hate the world never saw how good my man was on and off the field. Priest, if you ever see this message know that we love you. Your next stop should be coaching at an HBCU!
I also agree I teared up when he retired and also knew why and I always say detroit is a legend killer and walter and jim brown are close second and for my true hate f.... Emmitt f..... smith.
Mr Sanders averaged 1,500 yds for his career. NO ONE HAS DONE THAT, YET! We might ve waiting for awhile for that consistency even with a 17 game season. *on a team that was awful*
This brought so much joy to me. Priest was my favorite player during this time. I always felt he never got his just due, like HOW IS HE NOT IN THE HOF!?!?!? This dude was ridiculously good! Great even! Forever my greatest running back that gave his all when it seemed he had nothing left.
As a kid, I wore a black Priest Holmes jersey I got from a GoodWill, and loved that thing. Also found a Randy Moss Vikings jersey. I idolized their talents and tried to replicate them in the neighborhood field (when tackle football in the rain/mud/snow was still a thing). So many good memories.
His reverse moonwalk's into the end zone were always beautiful. He did that several times. I loved watching this guy. He always reminded me of Barry or Emmett with his running style. But he was physical as well. Incredible athlete.
Most people forget he scored the only two rushing touchdowns against the vaunted Nebraska blackshirt defense in the first big 12 championship game. He was a stallion
Priest is one of my favorite players of all time, and made those Chiefs teams so fun to watch in the early 2000s. The Texas Longhorns had Priest and Ricky Williams in the same backfield in the 90s 👀
You’re right Holmes belongs in the hall, and I believe Vermeel belongs too. Watching Priest play was magical I’m a Giants fan (I know) but Holmes was something special to witness.
My buddies and I started up a keeper fantasy league in 2001. I picked Ladanian Tomlinson with the last pick in the first round and Priest Holmes with my 7th round pick. Needless to say I did pretty well in that league and didn't need to worry about drafting running backs for a few years.
If i had to describe the career of Priest Holmes, I'd say that he was overshadowed. He was a great player, who only played on a super bowl contender for two seasons, wasn't the most accomplished among the other grear running backs (Sean Alexander, LaDamian Tomlinson, Marshall Faulk) nor was he the lone standout in terms of all time Chiefs Running backs before, or after. I love the guy, and its unfortunate that he doesnt really get the recognition that he deserved. Thank You NFL Films.
I've done the math, and had DT not died, he plays for probably like 3 more seasons (he had already played for a decade before his death) he averaged 12.5 sacks per season. So using that, he probably would've ended up with around 165 sacks, which would've put him 3rd all-time. I think at minimum he would've been 5th all-time.
So weird only about a year ago I was reminiscing on how good Holmes was and tried to find a good documentary or even a good highlight compilation and I couldn’t find anything that did him justice it was like he was forgotten or was never that good now this just popped up in my feeds and it’s very cool to watch thank you for not letting his greatness be ignored yes Holmes had one of the best stretches I’ve ever seen exactly how I would describe his greatness he was unstoppable with the Chiefs at one point when he was healthy
I'm not a Chiefs fan but I remember that 03 season like yesterday. Priest Holmes was a monster and Dante Hall was lights out when it was time to return one.

I’ll never forget the game where Priest scored a really close TD run and quickly busted out his celebration move in close quarters. Dude was a force. As a Broncos fan, he has my respect.
PRIEST HOLMES was my favorite running back of all time. With all the great backs that played the game,I know that's a hell of a statement. But I had just started watching the NFL. I didn't know that he and Trent Green came to KC together, and I guess that's why Trent Green also holds a lot of fond memories for me!!!! I kinda needed to see this video. GREAT VIDEO, THANKS A LOT!!!!!!!
Thanks for sharing. Was blessed to see him play and ask him questions during press conferences, etc. as a sports reporter. Excellent player and interview subject. Shawn R., Mo-Mutt Music/Sacred & Secular (and Chiefs fan)
Another great video, NFL Throwback 👍. Thanks. That early 00's Chiefs offense was STACKED, #1 o-line, #1 TE, #1 RB, good game manager & great head coach. It's a shame that some people don't remember that KC team. BTW, could you please make an Eric Dickerson highlights video?
I love Priest. As a young Chiefs fan he was my very first favorite player and jersey. Unfortunately I don't think he's gonna get in. He just wasn't healthy enough. He had 4 1,000 yard seasons, and those three amazing seasons in KC, but he just couldn't stay healthy. The same thing will probably unfortunately happen to Jamaal Charles. When he was healthy nobody was better, but I just don't think they'll let five great seasons surrounded by injuries into the Hall.
@@AmirKhan-yv8jm It is fun to think about. But I also think a Patrick Mahomes led team isn't gonna result in a running back getting 20 carries a game like Priest got. But man it's cool to dream.
I met Priest at Ravens training camp in either 99 or 00. He was the last one in from the field, taking time to talk and sign autographs for every fan waiting until he was finally asked to come in by a staff member, amidst a summer rain shower that turned into a downpour. Priest was one of those rare players who would make eye contact with each and every person and actually ask how you were doing. A true gentleman.

Played intramural touch football when I was at UT back in the early 90s. During a redshirt season, Priest was one of the referees. Once he made a controversial call in my favor, and was even kind enough to compliment our 'creative' offense after the game. Made a lifelong fan out of me.
I’m still relatively new to the NFL and its long history and I gotta say this documentary on Priest Holmes was just amazing. It gave him credit, conveyed the emotions and brought light to a fantastic career. Great job guys!
Someone was talking about some of the great running backs the other day, and I mentioned I would take Priest Holmes over McCoy and several others. Everyone started trying to say how he was a flash and gone. I brought up his stats at KC vs McCoy and Chris Johnson.
This was an awesome video!! Thank you for making it!! Absolutely love Dick Vermeil!! Since I'm a Bengals fan he obviously never coached my favorite team, but that being said the humility of this man is truly inspiring. There will never be more of a players coach. He was able to see and trust a players heart and not just there physical attributes... It shows when he put his job on the line sticking up for Priest... He also did it when he was a young coach with Vince Papale... For anyone on this thread that hasn't seen the movie"Invincible" with Mark Wahlberg it's a must watch!! In closing Congratulations to Priest Holmes, and I hope one day both player and coach make it in Canton....
This was finally recommended to me by RUclips after binging Pacheco videos... As a Kansas City kid who became a man during Priest's reign, I was very familiar with him. He is still my favorite player ever to this day, even though Mahomes really wants to be! He was a stellar player, and an even better person.
Oh, and Holmes was straight badass. His vision, and the timing and angle when he made his cuts was near perfect, and he had that great balance and leg drive. Made his 40 time irrelevant

3:24 I would like to take this opportunity to point out just how much of a freak(thus the nickname) Jevon Kearse was. I totally get the concept of having an angle in these situations. But still... Seeing a 6’5 265lb DE running down Priest Holmes like that is fkn ridiculous.
No one could absorb a hit and run off of it like him. As soon as he hits the pocket he had a third and fourth gear. Great to see him in pro’s. You should have seen this skinny little freshman run and run and run… Great memories and great person! Glad to call him a friend!
Priest got no credit back then. Every time I would mention priest Holmes, I’d be met with, “oh but his O-line is so good, anybody could look good behind them!” Priest definitely helped his line look good with his patience.
I remember this dude!!!! I don't understand why this super running back in in the HF ,this man was undrafted free agent, and the record that he put on the league unbelievable, this dude play in the era of the most famous RB..💯🔥
He didn't just make it to the league on talent alone! Hard work & bouncing back from injuries come from heart & digging down deep. He is a hall of famer in my book.
No one knew it at the time but Priest Holmes and Marshall Faulk changed the running back position today. Now you have to be able to catch just as well as you run to be a starting running back with the exception of Derrick Henry.
It's crazy that in 2004, Holmes was 31 and on pace for nearly 1800yds rushing and 28tds midway through the season. That was the first injury. The one in 2005 was the one that ended him.
Literally one of my most favorite players growing up. Going to watch him in Arrowhead was such a blast. He is so underappreciated and under recognized.

Priest Holmes not being drafted into the NFL always baffled me, i can definitely remember thinking he'd be a first round pick, there had to be something in his background for teams to shy away from him.
As a lifelong Chiefs fan, those early 2000s Chiefs teams were fun to watch, I was a huge Priest fan, great player, soft-spoken, humble, determined. Chiefs have always had a great tradition at the running back position, and he was one of the best to do it!
Deion used to say "It's not the Hall of good, it's the Hall of fame" Well damn if Priest Holmes wasn't DOMINANT. He's got a ring, he's got insane production, put him in Canton with this video as the argument!
My wife worked with his sister just after Priest had retired. I got to meet him. He is a very humble but motivated person and just nice to talk to. He gave me a bunch of his REALLY cool Playing Cards, a signed photo, and a signed Kansas City Chiefs hat with his name and number on it. The days of Priest Holmes and Tony G for the Chiefs is so nostalgic for me to see now. Chiefs had nowhere near the success they do now but they were such great athletes that it was exciting to watch them eventhough we were a losing franchise at the time.

He went to Marshall HS San Antonio perennial football 🏈 loser, both my daughters graduated
Marshall made it to State Final with Odessa Permian, lost 28-14!
Became a Longhorn but was overshadowed by Heisman winner Ricky Williams.
Great kid
@@bobbyg9662 there was another really good RB at that time. It’s crazy how much talent they had in the back field.
Why was he overlooked by colleges? I wonder the same thing about LT & Khalil Mack
I feel like Barry Sanders was criminally missed when discussing ‘peaks’ - his entire career was one massive peak.
My dawg
Exactly. The fuck 👀🤣 what about Sir Walter?

Tony Richardson was his lead blocker. One of the best fullbacks of all time.
Facts
Big facts
Yep, sucked we got rid of him over miniscule money...Carl Peterson good riddance.
Yes! An unsung hero.
I met Tony at Walmart in KC back in 2002. Still have the picture I took with him.
Damn kids really don’t go outside and play ???
His reverse moonwalk's into the end zone were always beautiful. He did that several times. I loved watching this guy. He always reminded me of Barry or Emmett with his running style. But he was physical as well. Incredible athlete.
Most people forget he scored the only two rushing touchdowns against the vaunted Nebraska blackshirt defense in the first big 12 championship game. He was a stallion
I remember that game. Probably the second biggest upset in Nebraska history.
HOOK 'EM!
Longhorn here. They indirectly referenced that in this video via highlights. Priest, not Ricky, shined for us. Great game

Didn't know they had franchise/keeper leagues in 2001 !
@@chiefkelce5017 they had am in 1981
If i had to describe the career of Priest Holmes, I'd say that he was overshadowed.
Priest was something else. Flying through the air at the goalline. My favorite player after the late great Derrick Thomas.

He should be in. He definitely deserves it...

This man Priest Holmes #31 did SO much work for me on my fantasy teams. Absolutely the most underrated legend.
He definitely was a great RB and that was definitely a HOF worthy stretch
Thanks for sharing. Was blessed to see him play and ask him questions during press conferences, etc. as a sports reporter. Excellent player and interview subject. Shawn R., Mo-Mutt Music/Sacred & Secular (and Chiefs fan)
Another great video, NFL Throwback 👍. Thanks. That early 00's Chiefs offense was STACKED, #1 o-line, #1 TE, #1 RB, good game manager & great head coach. It's a shame that some people don't remember that KC team. BTW, could you please make an Eric Dickerson highlights video?
Thanks for showing Holmes some much deserved love
I'll always remember him jumping over the goal lines to score!
❤️ Holmes and Hall we’re amazing. Gonzales, Green. Golden days.
I was a huge Holmes fan back in the day. Guy was a monster - he has earned a spot in the HOF imo.
Imagine if he played on the Patrick Mahomes led offense!
@@Matt-cr4vv also Priest seemed to be a late bloomer!
That line had to be one of the best offensive line units ever in the history of the NFL. Roaf, Waters, Weigman, Shields and Tait.

Played intramural touch football when I was at UT back in the early 90s. During a redshirt season, Priest was one of the referees. Once he made a controversial call in my favor, and was even kind enough to compliment our 'creative' offense after the game. Made a lifelong fan out of me.
He was always my second favorite running back! I'm a biased sad JETS fan. Dude, you're awesome. Your commentating is flawless.
I’m still relatively new to the NFL and its long history and I gotta say this documentary on Priest Holmes was just amazing. It gave him credit, conveyed the emotions and brought light to a fantastic career. Great job guys!
I'm a Raiders fan and I was happy for Priest. Goes to show that deep down our love for football goes beyond the colors we support.
Someone was talking about some of the great running backs the other day, and I mentioned I would take Priest Holmes over McCoy and several others. Everyone started trying to say how he was a flash and gone. I brought up his stats at KC vs McCoy and Chris Johnson.
Priest and coach was such a bond that most players pray for
Priest was a Beast ! Another great idea for a Throwback video
He also did it when he was a young coach with

The days of Priest Holmes and Tony G for the Chiefs is so nostalgic for me to see now. Chiefs had nowhere near the success they do now but they were such great athletes that it was exciting to watch them eventhough we were a losing franchise at the time.
