I have read several time that the 22 zz, because of high compreesion pistons and also not excellent lubrification, has blown up many times; so apparently, the 2 zz nedd to be modified to be more reliable

Dominique Bovard to be honest the 1zz is the same unreliable , the conrods are like toothpicks. But when we are talking built engines then it's a different discussion. For that money then we can include the 2gr and the k20 😁
Only discovered this car about 3 days ago and I've already plunged into the research rabbit hole lol. This was such a cool comparison! In the little research I've done, seems like the 2ZZ swap is pretty popular, aside from the 2GR-FE. There's someone local to me selling an '02 manual for 5G's but can't spend that money because I'm building a house lol. God I want one so bad!
They have been rocketing in value this last year. 2zz is the easiest and cheapest. Better engine than the 1zz. 1zz turbo is easy to do and fairly cheap although conrods are a time bomb. Built 1zz turbo is really nice but not cheap. 2gr-fe is the ultimate but heavy and expensive to do. Honda k20 is quite pricey but the most reliable, can put perform a built 1zz turbo very easily. has a massive aftermarket following for 4 figure power.
People are starting to do vag 20vt conversion kits now. Great value for money engine also with a massive following.
@@SpyderLEE what do you reckon a Dec 2004 facelift standard roadster is worth, 35500 miles (80 since last year's mot) motd late June22 with no advisories, matching hardtop mint (soft top mint), tte style bar and a decent Sony Bluetooth stereo, recent Toyo's, oil changed yearly (only done 6000 miles in 10 years) Brembo pads... subframe mint/waxed, underside arms etc all painted black, stainless steel screws on under covers...never driven too hard or been out in the wet.
Did 100 miles the other day and loved it but it's just not getting used enough anymore.

Tony Martin I know this is pretty late response, but with 70k miles only. You should keep that 1zz and boost it. Make sure to really get new headers that won’t have those nasty “pre-cats”. You won’t know which MR-S will have the issue. My 2001 still has the “pre-cats” with no issues at 136k, but since it’s high miles I rather just swap it.
Super late response but do a header to get rid of the failing pre cat and keep your dads car pure. Then K-SWAP that teggy and have a blast!!!

Great vid! looking forward to the sequel, my spyder unfortunately fell victim to the pre-cat failure (hindsight should have done research on forums) trying to decide if I want to follow through with swap or go the turbo route. Keep up the good videos man!
Im 1zz turbo (fully built bottom), with around 400whp. I plan on going k20, because I'm pretty much at the peak. I'm running 11.78@117mph this was in denver with a DA of 8200ft. Video is on my channel.
I'm an ex-gen 2 MR2 FReak and the old block on the 3Gs-GTE was good for some serious horsepower. I've noticed a shift in a ton of 3rd gen Mr2 owners to the K20.
What gives? Could the 1zz block not handle serious tuning?

The 1zz cannot handle much more than 400whp. The engine just wasn't designed for it. The oiling system (bearings specifically), head flow etc. Even the 2zz's top level is only 100whp higher than the 1zz. The k20 can handle 500whp with stock internals. PLUS the aftermarket support for the k series is amazing compared to the zz engines. Funny thing though, I would still need the e153 trans for that, because the mid engine design is so hard on the newer transmissions. Even now with the lower power level I'm at I keep snapping axles. I have thrown around the idea of stopping on this car and building something else, that can handle high HP numbers without complex engine/ tranny swaps.

I've never been in a 1zz turbo. I have been in a 2zz turbo though and it was a blast. I do drive a 2zz Stroker. Another dyno to follow after some tuning for E85 and header. Come across the pond sometime for a drive. Love your videos!
Looking forward to the followup video. I'm in the midst of a sleeper corolla build. Leaning more toward rebuilding/upgrading the 1zz and turboing it. Mild low compression stroker kit, cams, valves, springs, and a medium boost turbo. Love the way these engines sound compared to the riced out civics I see here in the stated and you can't beat the durability of the zz engines.
That body kit makes it look way better. I would take the 2zz though, maybe supercharged.

My dads 2zz is supercharged with a rotrex unit.. 350hp! The engine was fully recond before hand. With forged internals you can apparently go straight to 500hp but yeah.
It was supercharged by the 2ZZ Supercharger unit found in the Corolla compressor. 235hp with uprated injectors etc etc.. Engine had done 150K miles so was down more than it should've been.
How about comparing the wide body to the OEM set up.Offsetting the wheels that much makes me wonder if it effects handling negatively.

Quick question what will be the extra work to convert a stock MR2 with SMT transmissionto a 2ZZ with 6 Speed transmission Celica ? Any ECU or any know possible issue or extra work ? I'm asking because the SMT is much easier to find and more cheaper then 5 Speed transmission. Thanks.

mate, you should plug in an obd2 reader, load up torque and turn the logging on with rpm & speed. Then when you do your side by side you would have some data to run off too.

2zz all day! The turbo 1zz will make good power and torque and should be faster than a 2zz.. but I like NA engines and reliability over anything

@Mr420Man They need a stronger oil pump if you are going to be hammering the higher cam a lot, as well as an oil cooler. It's quite a well known thing in the Lotus community. But those cars get raced/tracked a LOT.
@MulaRose True, but luckily my 2ZZ is in a street driven XRS so I only hit lift for maybe 20 seconds in a whole day haha. I would get a Moroso oil pan, and oil pump if I were going to track the car for sure.

I got a 2zz aw11, goes great in that and I'd imagine it'd go just as well in a spyder. Driver in a 1zz turbo and it's much better than a stock spyder but a 2zz is much more sporty and track orientated like you said. It's more exciting and the power up top is just so fun. And to me the 2zz is the modern 4age and what better fit for the modern mr2...
i had a aw11 with the 2 zz, brilliant engine, but for street use, i would have liked more power at the low revs; i now have a spyder with the original motor, so i would like more power....
Yes it is an engine that you've gotta be going at least nine tenths or you might as well not try. But i found that similar to the 4age and I like that about it.
No it would go better, the lightest AW11 weighs at least 65kg more than the heaviest Facelift ZZW30 and up to 95kg more than the lightest ZWW30 without AC etc. Plus the MK3 is more aerodynamic.

1ZZ-T for me, mine won't be a track car so its good to have usable rpms further down the rev range and as noted in the video, the 1ZZ-T was dialed back to 6psi rather than the higher 12psi boost - you can't vary the power with the 2zz.

We are relatively new to the MR2 W3 and collecting all stuff we could find 😬👍. My wife and me saw on German TV, on a „car buy show“, for us , the first a bit lowered MR2 5 years ago. My wife never get out this picture out of her head, that the stock MR2 W3 could look much better then the a bit boring looking stock MR2 with only suspension and wheels. Last year we watched again many bestmotoring videos, of the Spirit MR-S and we were absolutly exited what this car could do on corners against much more expensive cars. So my wife decided to buy a2zz for her self. I am only the consultant👍😄,but I love the car! We will have to to do some things to get the car running legal on German streets.

2zz turbo or supercharged? Thoughts
Most 2ZZ conversions don't get anywhere near what you'd get from say a stock Corolla T-Sport or Celica 190 which vary from say 182-192 depending on mileage/looked after etc. I saw one Dyno'd to 195 but it had a PFC, All PPE exhaust, matched manifolds, bored throttle body etc. The three others I've seen made no more than 180. Using one of those cut shut exhausted the conversion places are pushing is a waste of time. You might as well rebuild a 1ZZ with Crower cams and better internals for less money and make 175bhp..easily on yellow injectors (plenty of evidence on Celica forums and Spyder chat as long as the exhaust is decent.
If you turbo, compared to a good 2ZZ you may have 180-200bhp on mild conversions but a extra 40lbs plus of torque....makes a big difference in how drives. The old TTE Turbo conversion pulled like a V8 from 3000rpm in third, try that in a 2ZZ it just bogs like your grandads Corolla.

If I were to turbo my MR2, I'd probably only run around 5-6 PSI for the reliability.
If you had to guess, how much do you think would 5-6 PSI of boost affect the longevity of a 2003+ 1ZZ? I'd like to get at least 200-250k miles out of the engine, but I fear that even a small amount of boost would make that unlikely. I don't know too much about 1ZZs.
Might be a bit of a long shot, but where do you know where the heating control knobs in Spencers car came from?

I have a 2000 MR2 that I have been driving with 6 psi turbo for around 150.000 km ( over 200.000 on the clock) with great reliab ility so turbo and reliability is also a question about being aware about that You are driving a tuned car.

Kozuto's Games I wouldn’t go above 12psi on the high comp pistons. 10 is safer. Got to remember the rods are weak on the 1zz. I push mine as I don’t care if I blow it. I’ve got a spare engine

No it’s just a low boost setup. About 12psi. Stock engine is coping with it.

Turns 9500 rpm, have had 6 years, weighs 2100 lb. 250 + hp turned 12:71 113. 6 mph Just did the rally from Chattanooga to the Mitty at Road Atlanta 153 miles across Geo on March 26 to do laps at Road Atlanta. 121 cars finished 2 after following a GT1 Mustang convert who knew the road. Could pass him at will but dont know road. had a great time. did some 135, mph passes. Yellow Datsun 2 dr. farmerfloyd.

Has anyone used the Lotus Elise 2ZZ with the Yamaha built head for one of these swaps?
There’s a video saying the heads are different and I knew it was wrong. Now I cannot remember who it was, Regular Car Reviews maybe? He started the Celica GTS version didn’t have the Yamaha head of the Lotus.
Every G designated Toyota engine has a Yamaha head. Yamaha helped Toyota with every wide angle port performance spec engine head. Yamaha and Toyota have worked together ever since the 2000GT, and Toyota even help Yamaha with their bikes, so it's a two way street.
As for the Elise/Exige: The difference was the ECU. Lotus used their own ECU for their cars, which also happens to be flash tune-able, unlike the ECUs Toyota used.

This is a real nice video! 2 awesome cars, and you both seem to keep your feet on the ground. Its a tough decision... putting a complete celica/corolla engine in is the less troublesome option and get the super exciting top end zing. While the boost is more tricky but is chunky and characterful but a bit of a liability. I'm really not sure which route to go. I've always fancied doing more turbo tinker time - fabrication and control systems but I know its going to come with its trouble. Yet i've had 2zzge power before and its totally exhilarating.
threepotgtti to be honest between a stock 2zz and basic boosted 1zz, it is a tough decision.. i personally like boost over revs. It's a bit of a personal decision thing. And. Most important is the final power goals. Boost will always win with power goals
Thank for the reply Lee, I've noticed you mention your using a TD04, I was thinking about using a TD05-16G, along your travels have you picked up any guidance/wisdom about turbo sizing? This is something I know nothing about. Also by early march I will have finished building my new garage/workshop, then the next project is to make my MR2 a bit more savage. I was thinking about vloging the whole conversion/fabriaction/electronics project, if you are near Cheshire maybe hook up. I run a company repairing 4wd ECU's called haldexrepairs.co.uk and a friend owns a local rolling road tuning place called revlimittuning.co.uk/ which could come in handy for some feature videos.
threepotgtti I'm not great with turbo sizing. Mines is a td04 with the larger compressor housing, I think it's a common mod with the impreza crew. More power but still quick spooling. I know of td05's on higher powered 1zz's 350bhp sort of builds. On sub 300 though you want one that quick spooling so you get hardly any lag, so a smallish turbo is best. I'm doing some traveling around next year so see what happens. I'll be on the lookout for a tuner at some point for my new big power engine 😉.

U mean to activate the hydraulic liquid pushing out the big cam, (vvti) idk that might be cool. The only thing i can think of is those locked vtec Hondas :) sounds like a big v8 with lope

I think I'd go with the turbo. The torque and mid range are great for city driving which is where I do most of my driving.

Just bought my first MR2 Spyder. First Japanese car, in fact. My daily is an Audi S5 4.2 V8. 354hp...good stuff.
But you know, in my opinion, I'm having a TON of fun with my unmolested 1zz. It's plenty for my purposes, and it's really fun feeling that vvti kick in up around 5,000. Almost like a turbo. I'm sure a 2zz is a blast...but I'm having a ball with 138 ponies.

Rich yes they did. Toyota decides its better for the MRS to have the 1zz as its aim to be a relaxing roadster and not a driving machine like its supposed to.
Part of the deal to supply 2zz engines to lotus was that it wasn’t to be used in the MR2.
Toyota made a deal with Lotus and sacrificed the spyder on the altar of medeocricy.

In the usa, a Honda K24a2 is $750 (or less if you find one from a yard or wrecked tsx), say another $800-900 for a 6spd LSD transmission. About $2,000 for a plug and play swap kit. So if you DIY you can have 225+ horsepower at the wheels (175tq) for around $4,000 give or take. Zero to 60mph in the 4s and 100mph in under 10s. All with Honda reliability and the best NA 4 cylinder in the world. You can get it to 265-275 at the wheels for another $1,500 using a ported k20z3 head, ported intake manifold, etc. I've been on the lookout for a spyder but they're rare and increasing in value...I just want one with a bad engine and clean body for under $3,000.

Standard Denso injectors should be ok up to 240ish I believe? my TTE kit flows plenty of fuel at 9psi.

2zz then when it becomes boring stick a compressor on top of it theres your low down torque but still got the response of N/A
2ZZ swap, HANDS DOWN.. You will be limited to about 200hp in NA form, but the 1ZZ is a flawed engine in stock form.. The good thing about it is that you can get a stock engine for like $600, so you can keep swapping them in if you need to haha. Its hard to beat the adrenaline of 8250rpm!

I never understood why the 2ZZ is so popular when it's SO MUCH WORK to swap an engine for only around 40 additional horsepower, also the high revving engine with low torque just doesn't work on the street were you have to break a lot. For the same price you could install a turbo, injectors, Computer etc. you can do it yourself in a few days and tune it for around 70-80HP with the 1ZZ torque. No way the 2ZZ would come even close.
I would put in an engine from an rsxs. The Honda milll is more reliable and powerful. Or I would leave it stock.

With these cars being a little older you have to decide if the 1zz in the car is worth putting a turbo on. If the engine is using a lot oil, very common, you are going to have to do an engine swap no matter what. So that may sway you but the turbo 1zz does have the potential for more horsepower.
If Toyota had done either of these things as a factory option the car would have been a huge seller. They really missed what we wanted from the car. More Power!

My 1zz is not the best, it's a bit smokey.. will be changing it sometime but I've got plans for something completely different 😉

Everyone commenting saying they would get a 2ZZ and modify it missed the point. The point is the cost of the build. A 1zz turbo kit cost about as much as paying someone to install a 2zz. So if you had $3,500 what wouls you spend it on? A 350hp 1zz turbo kit on stock block, or a 180hp 2zz?

i kinda wish it was 2zz turbo vs 1zz turbo. that's what really makes sense to me to compare.
I owned one of these back in the day (2008), turbo kits were expensive as hell, very limited and unreliable for the 1zz, everyone was doing the 2zz swap to include the tranny.
