As much as I liked this movie because it keeps the spirits of the original series, I'm gonna have to agree that the movie felt very rushed and would have preferred it to be the usual 12 episode length that it's always been. I really wanted to know more about Motome which I wanted to relate to but never got the time to properly connect with, and the performance despite it being beautiful in itself, the buildup to it is nowhere near as good as the original series due to how short it is. Oh well, at least Kumiko saves the movie because I love her LOL

Yeah, it's painfully rushed, Kumiko and Shuichi's romance was barely discussed even though it literally opens the film, but then again their "romance" makes no sense as explained in the video. The movie "Chikai no Finale" had so much content that the focus blurred. But, for me, the movie's main focus seemed to show the aftermath of the movie "Liz and the Bluebird". Chikai showcased Mizore and Nozomi's performance of Liz and the Bluebird in the contest, and also showed that Reina, Kumiko and Shuichi had changed in their relations after they learned the lessons from Liz and the Bluebird. They stopped trying to monopolize their beloved, as Mizore and Nozomi did.
Back to the season 2, Mizore and Nozomi's story suggested that the same thing would occur around them, (and also, Mizore and Nozomi were the embodiment of Asuka's inside in season 2). As Mizore recovered the bonds with Nozomi, Asuka recovered the bonds with her estranged father, and also Kumiko's sister-like bonds with Asuka were forged.
The roles of Mizore and Nozomi seemed to be the same in the following movies mentioned above. In "Liz and the Bluebird" Reina and Kumiko played Mizore and Nozomi's part. This plot implied that the same thing would occur between Reina and Kumiko in the following movie "Chikai no Finale".

I watched seasons one and two back when they first came out and didn't know about Chikai no Finale until recently and I thought a similar thing. It was trying to cram in so much into an hour and 40 minutes (approximately). I did go into the movie wanting to enjoy it. but it felt like nothing was going on for so long even though there was actually a lot going on. If they didn't try and set up all of the plot points and just stuck to a couple it could have worked with the timeline the movie portrayed. or even if they had two movies to set up all the plots that were in this movie. (obviously a whole season would have been better but you can't have it all lol). overall they shouldn't have rushed it.

I'm with you on the disappointment train, but I gained a greater appreciation for it once i rewatched it a year later (although I still wouldn't say I like it nearly as much as s2, which I don't like nearly as much as s1). I nearly fell asleep during the performance on my first watch and there are long stretches of this movie I barely remember- not to mention I don't remember a single newly introduced character's name...
One valuable perspective someone shared with me on this movie was that it demonstrates the cyclic nature of these conflicts- the feelings are human, normal, and expected. And those who have pushed through them before, like Kumiko or Natsuki (aka the secret GOAT of hibike), are the best equipped to share their knowledge and fix the issues this time around.
I am totally aligned with you on the lack of focus piece, though I feel that was a bit of an emerging issue even in season 2. I have high hopes for season 3 though, I recognize that Chikai no Finale had a valuable story to share, but the production did not allow it to flourish. With a full TV series on the way, I feel that we will see hibike euphonium return to form!

I wound up watching the Sound! Euphonium movie (and Liz and the Bluebird) long before I ever happened to watch the anime series, and my intial impression was that it was an overall good movie. Since I had no context of the previous two seasons my introduction to all the characters mostly took place in this film. While I did get a sense of missing some minor plot elements the film did a good job of letting the audience enjoy the movie without needing to have see the previous two seasons. After watching the series and going back to the movie again however, all of your criticisms became more readily apparent. This does not mean that I do not like this film, but its flaws are more readily apparent after seeing an entire school year play out over the course of two seasons versus the next year being crammed into a two hour theatrical experience.

I watched this movie yesterday and I seriously wish I didn't. It feels almost like a parody of the TV show, like they were trying to do all the things that the two seasons did without understanding what made them work in the first place. You can't do good character drama without good characters, and you can't do good characters with direction and writing like this. KyoAni, Monet you are not; you can't just dab some characterisation here and some great animation there and hope that the result ends up looking good somehow.
It's especially infuriating because the upperclassmen--Natsuki, Yuuko, Mizore, Nozomi--were by far my favourite characters. To see their final year--and the fruits of Liz!--wasted on this sorry excuse of a plot is heartbreaking.

Imagine setting up one year of story in 2 whole seasons and then just doing the same for the second year in just one movie. This movie was destined to fail from its conception, even more when you have a show like Hibike with a huge cast. You can't just present and develop a third of the cast in one hour. And what's also unrealistic is that after reaching the Nationals the year before, this year they just lost in the first stage

They brushed over the locals in s3 too because it’s a given they go to regionals at this point.

  • @chattywheeler5734
    @chattywheeler5734 2 года назад +4

Completely agree with all your points on this one. This shouldn't have been a film; this should have been a third season. I think the problem is that the anime industry is realizing that there's more money to be made in movie theaters. That isn't to say that anime films don't their place, they certainly do-Liz and the Blue Bird, A Silent Voice, and Violet Evergarden: The Movie are all proof of that. But if this movie and Clannad: The Motion Picture are anything to go off of, some media are better suited to the longer runtimes of TV shows.
Something I feel is worth mentioning is that almost all the problems of this movie were avoided by the previous movie, Sound Euphonium: May the Melody Reach You. In that movie, the filmmakers made the wise decision to trim down most of Season 2 to focus SOLELY on Asuka and Kumiko. The greater focus found in that movie worked very well, and I think that this movie could have benefitted from that kind of focus. Maybe, instead of trying to cram in so many subplots and characters, this movie could have focused primarily on Kumiko and Kanade. I really think there was something going there, and with a bit more time to flesh out Kanade and her subplot, it could have worked, but the rushed pacing squandered it.
Anyway. Great video! Congrats on the world record.

    • @Totaraum

To my knowledge kyoani is more so powered by what the studio wants to do rather than money, but I guess it would be dumb to assume that money doesn’t play a huge role. I totally agree that too many films like this one are doomed from the start due to an overcrowded story. I also didn’t see season 2’s recap movie because I thought it would just be a clip show, it’s surprising to hear that some genuine thought seemed to be put into it. And thank you, I practiced for years and now I finally hold the world record in something

It's not an awful movie by any means but it's definitely rushed. My biggest worry now is how will the upcoming season 3 handle the few story beats that this season 2 failed to set up.
I read through the book this movie covered, and from what I remember there were a few ways that the movie differed from the book due to how rushed it is:
Spoilers if you care about the book's reveals (only the books that Chikai No Finale adapted)...
Motomu actually has a reason for hating it when people call him by his name. He's got daddy issues and his dad is the well-respected band coach Gen-Chan Sensei, who helped his high school surpass Kitauji at the Kyoto Competition. Characters like Kanade and Midori pay enough attention to the musical community that they know he is Gen-Chan's son, which is why Kanade makes fun of him, and why Midori is so protective of him. (Her not sharing this fact with others or making fun of him is why Motomu has so much respect for Midori.)
Kanade is kind of a strange mix of two book characters! One was... Kanade, and the other was a new trumpet player who was talented but suffered from a lack of confidence due to the backstory where she messed up a solo in middle school (I believe that's how it went). They removed the new trumpet player from the cast and folded her backstory and lack of confidence onto Kanade. I can kind of understand why they did it, I don't think either the trumpet player or Kanade are particularly compelling in the book. Still, if the final book that season 3 is based on features this trumpet player heavily then that's a problem for KyoAni.
Reina openly wonders about whether the story of Liz and Blue Bird also applies to her relationship with Kumiko. The anime spent a grand total of like, five seconds to show this.
Oumae Kumiko plays a noticeable role in resolving the relationship between Mizore and Nozomi, but Liz and the Blue Bird had already adapted that section of the book into its own movie. Still, in general one of the subplots throughout the book is of Kumiko Oumae getting better at resolving the social issues between people, like how she did between Nozomi and Mizore. She gets a lot of respect from other band members because of this, and is ultimately chosen to be president. She breaks up with Shuuichi after she accepts the presidency.
There are other character moments that didn't make their way into the movie but that is the notable stuff that I can remember. It's unfortunate that some of these things like the Motomu characterization have the risk of potentially making season 3 more clunky.

I still haven't seen or read anything from Hibike Euphonium, but I gotta support Certified Cool Dude Totaraum, so I watched this anyways and gave it a like.
I don't think I've seen many unfocused films myself - I can only recall seeing the critically acclaimed films "Adjø Montebello" and "Assa", the latter of which I only made it midway through. But from this review and the comments under it, "Chikai no Finale" seems like a more frustrating type of unfocused compared to those two films: a type where you can tell that the movie had a lot of potential, but they were just juggling too much and kept dropping the balls. Huff. A poor showing from the best of the best.

It doesn't look like it's on any of the major streaming services, but you'll be able to find it through google
