Ultravox were one of those amazing bands from the uk that conquered the world in the early 1980s - except the U.S. There are so many great UK bands to listen to that never made it in America; Ultravox, Big Country, Status Quo to name 3 of the best. If you like Vienna, you should hear Ultravox classics like Visions In Blue, Hymn and The Voice.
Slade huge in uk but couldn’t crack America due to tragedy and illness, their biggest hit in usa was their 80’s hit Run Run Away
the jam too
Huge, huge hit. Ultravox at the very peak of their powers.
man this song is a banger!
And somehow kept from the top spot by Joe Dolce?!? 😮
A travesty
@@necessaryevil3428 Totally!!
It was a large one.
My teenage years in the 80s were fantastic😊 Things are dark now😢
One of the greatest pop songs in music history. Midge Ure the lead singer, along with Bob Geldorf of The Boomtown Rats, thought up and brought to life 'Live Aid' in 1985, the biggest live music concert of all time. Midge is in his own right a music legend, singer, songwriter, producer. This track was not experimental, it was born out of the Electronica sound of that era, and almost alone personifies the 1980's and the Synthpop era in general.
And for a short while, Midge played in Thin Lizzy! I liked his solo song If I Was.
great group. Iconic song of elegance and melancholy.
Yes! Melancholy is a great word for it!
Listen to songs like I remember ( death in the afternoon), Hymn, Visions in blue, The Voice & Dancing with tears in my eyes. A epic 80's journey 🤓🖤
Midge Ure is touring the US he just arrived. I am anxiously waiting to see him on Sept 13 in Fort Lauderdale! I hope he plays "Visions in Blue" its one of my all time favorites!
Hymn was great...the first 7" I bought
In the UK this epic was famously kept off the number 1 single spot by the novelty song "Shaddpa You Face" :-) and this was when being the number one single really meant something.
Mid 80's classic that required a good sound system to fully appreciate the music !
Not mid 80's released in 1981
It was released in February 1981 and is as fresh today when it was back then. RIP Chris Cross xx
yes agreed! My headphones are quite high quality and it really helped to enjoy this song!
Was 15 years old when this classic was released. Always stop what i'm doing when I hear this beautiful piece of music.
This video, and most other Ultravox videos was directed by Russell Mulcahy, who directed the original Highlander. He directed some of the best music videos ever made.
The singer and songwriter is Midge Ure. He had a solo hit with "Dear God", one of my favorite 80's songs.
Midge Ure is from the same place as me. Tiny place called Cambuslang, in Glasgow Scotland. He went to school with my mum. Guy had some voice. Also a HUGE driving force for Band/Live Aid.
Midge was also the other half of the pair (Midge Ure and Bob Geldof) who brought us the Live Aid concert from Wembley Stadium back in 1985.
They put BandAid together first, Midge actually did most of the heavy lifting, as for Live Aid whilst Geldof put himself out there and was a figurehead Midge put a huge amount in but ultimately it was the promoter Harvey Goldsmith who underpinned it all, he was the top promoter this side of the Atlantic with all the connections needed to stage Live Aid.
@@RushfanUK True, I was actually around back then, I just gave Band Aid a miss as some Americans seem to think that 'We Are The World' was the only charity record released.
thats incredible! Visionaries!
40+ years ago and it still sounds as good today as it did back then !!!!
Fun fact. The tarantula in the video that creeps across Julian Temple's face is apparently the same tarantula that crawled over Sean Connery's shoulder in the Bond film Dr. No. Wonder if the videos director Russel Mulchay mentioned that to Sean when he directed him in Highlander a couple of years later? Great song, my favourite still today.
I was 16 in 1980 i witnessed the best of music loe this omd is class 80s
Majestic is the word i would use to describe this iconic track .
From the early days of MTV when accompanying videos were interpretations by the directors .
This video was the creation of the go to director of the day Russell Mulcahy who also made videos for a whole range of major 80s acts like Duran Duran and many others
Loved em growing up, looking back they we so good, Midge Ure has an amazing voice. Still have some records (somewhere)
So, now that you have seen the polished studio version, you need to find the live version from the Live Aid concert at Wembley Stadium.
Search for these words... you won't regret it.
Ultravox - Vienna (Live Aid 1985)
This was one of the geatest Electronic song's ever! And I love song from Midge Ure -If I was...really beautiful song!Thank you for Bring my memories back🫶
One of the best songs of all time for me, takes me back to my young years ♥️
I’m over here in New Zealand and this song was a HUGE hit! The whole early 80’s New Wave things seemed to hit everywhere except for the US
Midge was also in Thin Lizzy for a short while, as well as another Electronica band, Visage.
First discovered Midge Ure when he was playing in a band called Slik. I heard that he was approached to be the singer in The Sex Pistols but turned it down. He did go on to play in the Rich Kids though with the Pistols original bassist Glen Matlock. Didn't really hear a lot of his solo stuff, but did enjoy his 'Answers to Nothing' album, featuring the single of the same name and 'Dear God'. Had the former Japan bassist Mick Karn playing on that too. A fretless god.
He was also in Slik and The Rich Kids.
Ultravox is amazing band!
I love this song so much. My mum was a huge fan so it was played VERY frequently during my early childhood. I think the video is inspired by the Edgar Allen Poe short story "The Masque of the Red Death" if you read it and watch the video the themes are too similar to be a coincidence (also read it because it's a great spooky short story).
Growing up in the 70s 80s in the UK the music was amazing, so many genre's, lived it.
Such a Classic. My favourite Album of theirs would be ‘Lament’, it’s like their ‘Back In Black’, just perfection. ‘White China’ in particular is incredible.
Early 80’s Synth bands ruled the UK airways.
Check out Fade to Grey by Visage. Billy & Midge from Ultravox plus Steve Strange on vocals.
One of my favorite bands of all time. You should also have a listen to "Fade to Grey" by Visage. Midge Ure of Ultravox was the produce and collaborated with Steve Strange to create the Visage album.
The video itself cost 5000-6000£. The record company wouldn't pay for it so the band did it themselves. They flew into Vienna one morning. Ran around filming for one day and returned the same evening. The video shoot took 3 days. The rest of the video was filmed in Covent Garden and the old Kilburn Gaumont Theatre in North London.
Check out Dancing With Tears In My Eyes.
Vocalist Midge Ure was hired as guitarist for Thin Lizzy when Gary Moore suddenly left during the North American tour in 1979. He told that he took a plane and listened to Thin Lizzy songs on the way to the US. After the Tour he continued as a keyboard player for them until April 1980. Midge Ure also was a member of Visage. Known for the mega hit Fade To Grey.
Swedish metal band Clawfinger did a great cover.
what! This was self produced? It looks so good! And so ambitious!
@@TheWolfHunterZ They just brought a friend (Nick) with a camera to Vienna. The shots taken in London was directed by Russell Mulcahy. Ultravox actually said that £6000 was a lot of money back then for a music video.
Masterpiece!
Excellent band .
Father Benny Cake...if you know, you know😂
great reaction guys for a gold from 80s
You so missed out dudes, living through the 80’s in regards to music was the best decade by far; as Midge Ure one said, “80’s music was so highly thought of, inspirational and innovative because those musicians were growing up from the late 50’s onwards and they improved on that”. Or words to that effect.
Listen to other Ultravox tracks, many good ones to choose from! xx
this band has captivated us!
Listen to:
- Western Promise
- One Small Day
- Hymn
- The Voice
- Visions in Blue
Or pick anything else from their catalogue. Enjoy the listening
I love your reactions and now it's to one of my favourite songs and videos! Bravo.
Now this is real youthsentiment for me,growing up in that time and this sort of AWESOME music was/is really GREAT😊😊 Love it.
One of the Children of Kraftwerk.....check out early OMD,Gary Newman,Human League,Depeche Mode,Flock of Seaguls,New Order,....and not to forget VISAGE (Everybody knows FATE TO GREY),one of the Side Projects of Godfather MIDGE URE,Founder of Ultravox.
Actually, it was Warren Cann who was the founder of Ultravox.
VOIDRAKER SAYS YES.❤
Midge Ure, fantastic singer/songwriter/producer. (guy I worked with actually the person who first called him "Midge" because he was called Jim (real name James Ure) the band was Slick) Midge was, along with Bob Geldoff, the guy who brought us Live Aid
love it! Midge Ure was quite awesome. has some great solo stuff to!
More great taste from DEI ......👍
Grew up and loved Ultravox midge ure Scottish singer song writer was lead singer of a few bands before going solo in later 80s early 90s Vienna not there only hit had quite alot.
Vienna is capital city of state Austria...its greate song👍
The Live Aid performance is brilliant
New Wave, very cinematic, film noirish
A big favourite from when I was a little girl
Reap the Wild Wind was their only hit in the US that entered the top 100 got as far as #71. But in other countries they had other hits. Brilliant underrated band of the 80’s.
Ultravox was a part of my early eighties favourite bans as a early teen.
Created a new genre
You got it dude 😅
The lead singer, Midge Ure teamed up with Bob Geldoff to organise the 1984 Live aid concerts in London and Philadelphia to raise money for the Ethiopian famine.
If you haven't already checked it out it's where Queen stole the show and made one of the worlds most watched videos.
Of course the 80s was the time of electronic music with the advent of MIDI linking up drum machines, synths, samplers, sequencers etc. Still mainly being recorded onto tape but using one track to record a sync track to keep everything synchronized until the computers took over the world and destroyed the need for musical talent.
This means nothing to meeeeeeeeeee!
When music was something you could actually whistle along to...
This was a giant hit - even in South Africa
❤
Lead singer midge ure had a solo career that started in the 80's.
In 84 bob geldof lead singer of the boomtown rats called on midge to help him write a charity song for the famine in Ethiopia.they got as many people artists that they could at short notice to record do they know it's Christmas.called the group band aid and managed to get it out in time to get the xmas no1 which kept last Christmas by wham off the no1 until 2022 when 39 years after release it got the xmas no1
Because they knew that they needed to get aid to Ethiopia as soon as possible there were artists that were not available cause they were on tour etc.
So the next year they put on live aid to let the artists like queen who weren't available do their bit for charity.
Any body else turned up at 80s dance clubs in a trench coat and just stood looking moody in the middle of the dancefloor?
Not experimental at all, pretty mainstream for the time, just you haven't heard much electronic music I think.
you have to listen to the newer version of Midge ure´s solo tour
Ckassic 80-s song.
Perhaps you should look at some of their other hits, such as Hymn, Visions In Blue, and Sleepwalk.
Don't forget "The thin wall" and "Dancing with tears in my eyes" or even "We came to dance"
You should more react to beautiful Eighties the best decade for music with deep soul singers ❤ don't believe haters😢
Ultravox got lumped into the new romantic genre. I think they were a bit more than that.
R you selling or reacting?
This brilliant song reached No 2 in the UK charts, kept off of the top by a ridiculous comedy song. Shaadupa Ya Face sung in a mickey taking Italian accent....So many great songs kept off the top by nonsense....
Don't want to buy your shit, play...😅😅😅
This song never made it to No1 in the uk chart only made No 2 shud up your face kept it off the top slot
I'm sorry , but this means nothing to me.........................mm..m 😂😂
Kept off UK number one by an absolutely awful novelty song¡ I used to wait for this on top of the pops. Keep looking at their music videos, they have a lot with stories to them
You talk too much!
Great new wave band but i think this track is boring
There’s always that 1 guy and yep it’s you. Why bother commenting then faceache?
