  • Most Frequent Causes for Lawn mower leaking gas. The float needle valve might not be shutting off the fuel. The float needle opens and closes the float valve to allow fuel to enter the float bowl. If the float needle is damaged, the carburetor will continue to fill with fuel until it overflows.

This video saved me from loosing my shit. The lawn mower was running low key and stalling out. So figured I would take the carb off and clean it watching another video. This would be my first time doing this and I'm 53. Cleand it put it back together and started it up. Ran fine for a minute and thinking it was good to go. Then I saw the gas running out of the air filter. So I took it back apart and cleaned it again. Same result with the leaking gas. I threw my hands up and went inside for a few minutes. I looked up leaking plastic carb and came across your video. Sure enough that was the problem. I put it all back together and it ran strong. 3 hrs of cleaning and fixing that carb. I can't thank you enough for your video. I owe you one. Thank you.

great video- which shows the possible culprits- float, needle valve or alignment, along with a simple way to test without removing the carburetor. Also, if the cavity the needle valve sits in is not smooth, gas will leak.

The lawnmower would start and die right away. I tried to open the carburetor and cleaned it, which fixed the problem. After putting it back, however, the carburetor started to leak gas. That wasn't a problem before. Guess I will have to reassemble it. Thanks for the detailed video. Awesome camera skill there.

O.M.G. I have been struggling with my TB-110 for weeks! Same janky carburetor. So far I have cleaned it, to no avail. Bored the intake jet to make it a tad larger, to no avail. Tightened the governor spring, to no avail. So I added Sea Foam to both the oil and the gas, took the air filter off, and was able (just barely) to mow my tiny yard. Yay! But I went through an entire tank of gas, and I bet my neighbor's dog that THIS is why my air filter smells like gas and why it's still not reaching full RPM's. Thank you! I can't wait to try this next! You rock! I will post an update here to let you know if the float was the culprit. :)

I just discovered your DIY series, especially enjoyable for the fact you show everything, including the cut fingers (alerting us to the same sharp metal edge hazard) and your frustration at finding riveted rather than bolted construction (requiring different disassembly).
You also may have identified the problem with my older Briggs & Stratton Quantum engine carburetor, although my carburetor model is the older, non-plastic version. On this metal carburetor, the float may be misaligned, preventing the needle from entering the seat properly. Until your video, I had no way to check for float alignment and proper needle-seating. You can imagine the frustration after having carefully cleaned all the carburetor passages, checked the float for leakage and cleaned even the needle value and seat with carburetor cleaner-- only to find the same dribble of gas, as before.
As soon as I can, I'll try the simple test method you showed. With the carburetor housing still bolted in place, but with bowl cover removed and gas line connected, I'll lift the carburetor float into its "full bowl" position to determine whether the needle enters its seat well enough to stop the flow of gas completely. As your example demonstrates so beautifully, the float test should indicate whether all works properly in the carburetor bowl, but before final assembly.
For innocent bystanders planning carburetor cleaning and repair, Briggs & Stratton technicians told me to use
"85-inch pounds" on tightening the carburetor bowl nut for my Quantum engine. Presumably, most Quantum engines meet the same or similar specification, but presumption could be an expensive mistake. If you need confirmation, call Briggs & Stratton to make sure at 800 274 4485 (tech support) or 800 444 7774 (parts). This may help newbies whose only information has been "make it snug".
CAUTIONARY NOTE TO DO-IT-YOURSELFers-- gas exposed to open air is an extreme fire hazard, so never try the float test on a hot engine. Gas fumes can ignite suddenly and even explosively, especially in a garage or other confined area. Best to tinker with a carburetor and a tank of gas in the open, at least 20 feet away from the family automobile and other valuables. Although it may seem overkill (so to speak), keep a fire extinguisher in reach which is rated to handle gasoline fires (some are not). Without quickly extinguishing a sudden blaze, a fuel fire grows completely out of control and does major damage-- all for the sake of fixing a lawn mower.
In any case, good camera work. Just from curiosity, what camera did you use?

Damn I've been taking the whole damn thing off..glad I seen this. My carb was fine till I took it apart..like many times in the past. I'm sure it is the needle valve. Gonna try this. My lawn mower runs fine. It takes about 3 mins and then it just starts leaking. Never had it happen to me before. I even took another carb off another mower same kind and they both look fine. IDK wtf it could be except this

I had the same problem. Bought the rebuild kit - changed the needle and seat. Still leaking from the same little hole. To test if the valve was in fact working, I removed the bowl then lowered and raised the float. It worked normally - when UP, fuel would not come out. When I let it go DOWN, fuel would flow out. I even removed the float and tested it in a sink full of water to check buoyancy, and it floated normally. I have no idea why it's still leaking.

Great video well explained but did not sort out my problem. Float shuts off nicely when testing by hand. However on assemly still floods indicating that the float does not seem to rise up enough to shut the fueloff. does this mean the float needs replacing? Unfortunately the float is an non replaceable part short of replacing the whole carby. Interested in any feed back thank you.

Pushing the float up by hand isn't the way to do this..I have a carb test pump that I made. Remove carb, turn carb over, put 5 psi of pressure in..if the gage go's down, it's going to be the needle seat..I use cleanser or metal polish with a dowel rod that fits tight..lap the bur out of the seat...if the needle is leaking it will fill the crank case up with fuel...if the weight of the float doesn't seal..you need to address the seat

I can't believe you did this without removing and cleaning the carburetor first! It takes less than a minute to remove it and put it on a clean shop table with good lighting. Then you can go ahead and remove and clean the cartridge, especially the main jet. I can see dirt and grime on your screwdriver blade as it's poking around INSIDE the carburetor. The tiniest piece of junk from the screwdriver will go straight to the bottom of the bowl and stop up your jet.
