Sanding is my shoulders and arm workout bro. Saves money on gym membership I LOVE sanding. I'm even going to charge my employees personal trainer rates to put time in my job site gym.
Good video. Too many people think sanding is the key to everything, but putting it on well first is much more important, then sanding is not needed, or very little is if you do. I often sand anyway, because I use my Porter Cable drywall sander with the dust deputy like I demonstrated in my review video, and that eliminates about 98% of dust. Take care, Guy
Hi Guy, I appreciate that man!👍🏻 Yes exactly. The application is key no doubt. Thanks so much for taking the time to watch and comment my friend!😎 -Paul
I wish videos like this were around when I did this more! Would have been a life saver. I'm sure it was just lack of experience but I always got stuck sanding. Just couldn't get that smooth surface without it.
Hi Paul- great vids man!!! I tackled skim coating my bathroom ceiling and walls!! Going well ceiling went pretty smooth but walls had a eggshell finish paint and the compound was not sticking!!! I ruffed up the paint and it did the trick, 3rd coat going on today!!
@@PaulPeck did some detail work on all the corners and some spots that needed some touching up, today i will do some light sanding on certain areas and im ready for primer!!! some important things i learned was the water to mud ratio is vital and to also get in a flow/rhythm applying the mud(gotta work on my speed) thanks for the reply Paul. Looking forward to seeing the end product !!!
This video is very helpful to me right now, Paul, because I am currently working on a customer's dining room ceiling that had water damage at one time and I will be skim coating it eventually. I also noticed that you used the Sheetrock All Purpose mud as well.
Thanks for sharing this video. I was missing that I need to only put the mud on the edge to eliminate so many marks. I'm feeling more confident for my next project!
Right on Janae!👍🏻 it funny how just a couple tips can make all the difference when it comes to technique. So glad my videos are helping you!🔥 Thanks so much for watching and subscribing my friend!😎 -Paul
This method is for painted popcorn ceiling, which is very difficult to remove. If it were falling off that easily that means it's not painted, and he would've just removed the texture instead of covering it
Paul, when you skim over painted popcorn, do you find a lot of air bubbles in your first coat? I patch a lot of holes that we always have cut into walls, and many of these walls are already painted walls, and so because of this we we see lots of air holes that develop minutes after we tape down a smooth layer of mud after making a patch on these previously painted walls.
Hey there Jeff!👊🏻 Yes, I definitely see a lot more air bubbles on previously painted surfaces. The mud just doesn’t absorb into a painted surface like it does on new drywall or even joint compound. So the off gassing bubbles are created from the sealed/painted surface. So they happen more on the first skim more than the second skim. Thanks for stopping by my friend!😎 -Paul
Redid the ceilings in my whole house last year & I'm wishing I'd watched this series sooner. It woulda saved me a lot of time and sanding. #DrywallTube
So after I skim coat for the second time can I just paint the ceiling. I don’t want any texture anymore just flat or do i need to Add something else to Seal it?
#drywalltube Thanks so much for this series! I've been debating the best way to get rid of my popcorn ceilings and since my house is older, I didn't want to risk trying to scrape them. (Also been there done that once and that was enough!) I just want nice flat ceilings that I can transform with a nice ceiling medallion and moldings and you've shown me how. Many thanks!
Phil diy guy. I removed popcorn and repaired some small hammer dings from nailing drywall up in 80’s. Ceiling is really smooth. I primed ceiling and started skim coating it. But the mud is drying soo fast can not go back too try and smooth area. Will I have too apply a second coat?
Hi Paul, can I skim coat over popcorn ceiling that has been painted with a flat white ceiling paint or do I have to prime the ceiling first before skim coating?
#drywalltube Thanks for the up close video. It makes me feel better to see the first coat is not perfect. I know it is a process, but I think I am trying to get too smooth of a finish on the first coat. You're the man!
I hate sanding over cured skim coat.. So I just use a painter brush to smoothen out the irregularities when the skim is setting... Its not perfect but it's acceptable....
Hey Paul, love your videos! I was about to scrap my ceilings from the 70’s but not anymore! Question; what is your cleaning method of your tools? Also, how long can mixed compound last?
I see a lot of popcorn ceilings in Illinois where I’m located including my own house. Is it a big thing in your area? Your video series on this subject is very helpful. Thanks Paul.
Hey TEH, popcorn used to be popular here. But it’s slowly getting removed house by house. Anything built after the early 90’s is either knockdown or skip trowel on ceilings. Glad you finding this series helpful. Thanks for watching! 😎 -Paul
Great video Paul. Many thanks. I'm planning on skimming a texture that was applied to a plaster and lathe ceiling. There are a few minor cracks in the original plaster. Is there anything I can add to the joint compound to make it more "elastic" or otherwise able to disguise the minor cracks? Many thanks
Realize I am late responding. Have the same scenario. How did yours turn out? For my old plaster over lathe I did a simple scrape over surface to remove any loose or bumps, then applied guardz primer then fiberglass mesh tape which sticks a lot better once primed. Then 45 minutes mud on the tape, let dry, scrape that, then skim two coats as Paul is demonstrating so well.
Yes you sure can!👍🏻 Here’s a video that shows my technique and lots of skim coating a smooth surface tips and tricks: ruclips.net/video/8yYzSOr3KeI/видео.html I hope this helps. Thanks so much for watching and subscribing my friend!😎 -Paul
Hi Linda, No. If the popcorn texture is not painted, applying any type of joint compound will activate the popcorn ceiling (with the moisture that is in the joint compound) and it will fall off the ceiling as well as create a huge mess. If the popcorn ceiling is unpainted, you have two options... 1. spray the ceiling with water using a garden sprayer. You will have to wet it 2-3 times, then scrape off the popcorn. I use a plastic taping knife as it gouges the ceiling less than a metal taping knife. Or, 2. Seal the unpainted ceiling with Gardz problem solving primer. One of its uses is for this purpose... to seal popcorn ceilings prior to painting or skim coating with joint compound. Gardz will prevent the water in the joint compound from getting into the popcorn ceiling. I would suggest number 1. After the popcorn is removed, It will be easier for you to touch up the ceiling. Take care!
I am a plasterer from the UK looks like the way you all do your skimming is a very long and time consuming over several days where we just do it in one skim with two coats on. No need to sand after we do our plastering
That’s awesome Chris!👍🏻 Yeah a crappy ceiling job can be a real eyesore. I’m glad you found my video helpful. Thanks so much for watching and subscribing!😎 -Paul
Hey Martin, I appreciate that man!👍🏻 if I was going for a smooth ceiling like this it would take three rounds of skim coatings. I hope this helps. Thanks so much for watching!😎 -Paul
the chemicals reaction of the texture of po ceiling dont' bond 100% to the skim coat coating ,will be good to prime first your ceiling and most if that is a old texture ceiling .
Great video Paul. Let me ask you so I install new drywall in my living room all the way through to my kitchen do I need to skimcoat the entire ceiling? And if so do I need to prime it first for prime it after the skim coat? Thank you Paul. (Drywall Tube) 👍💯

Drywall tube. Love your video!!
How do you avoid breaking off ans dragging the popcorn pieces around and leaving lines?
This method is for painted popcorn ceiling, which is very difficult to remove. If it were falling off that easily that means it's not painted, and he would've just removed the texture instead of covering it

Can you do the skim coating over an unpzinted popcorn ceiling?
No. The popcorn and skim coat will just fall off. If you prime the popcorn first, then you can skim over that.👍🏻

New subscriber. Thanks for the tutorials. Very helpful videos
How many coats total? What do you do with the last coat to prime for painting?
it is ok to leave skim coat without paint,?
So after I skim coat for the second time can I just paint the ceiling. I don’t want any texture anymore just flat or do
i need to
Add something else to
Seal it?

Hi Paul, can I skim coat over popcorn ceiling that has been painted with a flat white ceiling paint or do I have to prime the ceiling first before skim coating?
Is it possible to do a tester spot in closet or somewhere inconspicuous?

I hate sanding over cured skim coat.. So I just use a painter brush to smoothen out the irregularities when the skim is setting... Its not perfect but it's acceptable....
Don't understand why ppl skip trowel after skim coating. You smoothen a bumpy ugly ceiling just to make it bumpy and ugly again?!?!! Why???
Hey Paul, love your videos! I was about to scrap my ceilings from the 70’s but not anymore! Question; what is your cleaning method of your tools? Also, how long can mixed compound last?
This isn't joint compound though right? The one we have would get completely scraped up if we did that? Is there a harder material for skim coat?
Unless you end up walking on your ceiling it shouldn’t get dinged up...

Wait why did you do a nice skim coat over popcorn and then add yet another texture at the end to the smoothe surface?
Customer wanted the texture to match all of the other ceilings in the home.👍🏻
