    Use a texture roller it works.beag and easy to wash n reuse. Spread the mud like paint. Start in the middle of the area your applying it then go back n forth to spread it.

  • @jaxflfreebird
    @jaxflfreebird 2 года назад

    OK Guy, I ordered a 24" Level 5 spreader thing, an adapter and an extension handle. Hopefully with this thing I will be able to smooth out the mud once I spread it on the way you did. I have already put up at least one layer of mud onto my bathroom ceiling. That I did mostly with a 6 inch knife. It's impossible to work on my bathroom because there is no room. I have a base coat that is now stuck to the ceiling. I scraped and sanded it with one of those round sanders you showed. I had a rectangular one first and that is honestly the most USELESS and cussworthy piece of junk I have ever spent money on. I appreciate the videos.

    21:40 I've discovered that by using a shop vac bag for drywall dust, the filter stays 99 percent clean with no clogging, and the drywall dust drops to the bottom of the bag. I can sand for days before the filter bag begins to get too heavy to move around easily, then I change the filter bag. The filter itself stays clean. This is perfect for an amateur like myself who isn't a pro taper who would have far less sanding to do.

    • @ThatKiltedGuyDIY

      Putting texture on the ceiling is definitely messy. You will be covered in a light splatter and it will drip everywhere. But it washes off really easy so not that big of a deal. So you don’t really even need clothing for protection

    3:02 Unless you have a very good dust collection system, you might want to wet-sand the ceiling, especially if it was first textured before the late 1970s. My 1959 ceiling probably had asbestos, so I just kept dipping the pole sander, with a fiberglass sanding sheet, in a bucket of water, so the asbestos went down the drain.

    • @ThatKiltedGuyDIY
      @ThatKiltedGuyDIY  4 года назад

      Actually, when sanding a painted surface, you shouldn't be stirring up much at all, just scratching the top layer and knocking off a few peaks. But I do advise wearing a good mask anyway. But that wet sanding method would work too.

    Another question on skim coating. After I finish the skim coat and put my new texture back on, you mentioned priming then paint. Is priming necessary and what is the purpose? Thanks. Great video’s.

    • @JobeStroud
      @JobeStroud 2 года назад

      I just saw this was 2 years old. I will still answer. You prime it so it doesn't absorb the paint. Even paint primer mix the texture can and will absorb some of the paint. Plus priming it truly seals the texture and prevents loose texture from getting stuck in your roller.

    As a baker, I always kneed dough on "feel"... if it feels right, it is right. Is that what it is like for you and mud? How would you describe a good "feel" for mud when skimming away a textured paint surface? An all-around good bread feel is soft, elastic, and just dry enough that it may stick to your fingers but doesn't. Watching you mix that bucket reminded me of my doughs. Well wishes to you and your family, I hope this finds you in better times! Hugs!

      Matthew, 60-80 grit, sand just enough to knock off the bumps, so about twice over each area, but overlap as you go.

    Great Video! QUESTION: Your opinion on priming? I will be skimming a painted 1940s plaster ceiling that that peeled paint terribly. I have cleaned, scraped and sanded it for skimming (alot of work!). I have read that the plaster ceiling should be primed with oil primer before skimming compound to plaster AND after the compound oil primed after skimming before paint. I actually think the original paint peeling was because the person skimmed with compound, didn't prime after and then painted. This peeling has happened in a few large places in the home's ceiling for some unknown reason.

    • @ThatKiltedGuyDIY
      @ThatKiltedGuyDIY  4 года назад +1

      Well not seeing it, I'd say yes prime it with primer, but I only use oil base for heavy duty stain blocking. They have great bonding primers now that are water based like Zinsser Bullseye 123. But, I would sand it first with 80 grit or coarser to give the primer tooth to bite too.

      Do not use oil base with joint compound .. never use oil base anything when you are skimming.. Water based compounds do not adhere to oil. You scrape it til all the loose stuff comes off. Then you use a primer sealer water based like PPG gripper. After gripper is applied the mud sticks and you use less because the wall or ceiling is sealed ... Then you skim the ceiling and then prime it again with gripper then you will use less paint because the ceiling is sealed with the sealer in the primer ... And if you have heavy stains use the kilz with the tan label ( Kilz Premium 3) that is water based it will block all stains ... do not use the blue label kilz because its cheaper ...

      As for the mud box. I don’t like skim coating with it. I would have to leave sections and come back the next day and do them. Plus it coats in an arc so it would likely be a bit wavy when done.

    Have you ever used this roller method for skimming over a ceiling that has that old swirl texture on it? I'm thinking it will probably require using a pan and knife so that thicker mud can be applied. It's going to get a heavy splatter texture, so hoping one coat will cover.
    And thank you for putting out the most detailed and comprehensive videos about drywall on RUclips.

    I recently removed the popcorn ceiling. Unfortunately, it left a bottom layer that's a little irregular and I'm guessing probably still has some asbestos in it. Rather than continuing to try to remove, I'm considering painting with a primer to lock in anything left, and then doing a skim coat or two to cover the irregularities. I'm sure I can cover these irregularities if I do the traditional skimcoating and put a thicker layer on first. Your method is a lot easier, though - do you think a coat or two will work, or should be applying a thicker coat with a trowel?

    • @ThatKiltedGuyDIY
      @ThatKiltedGuyDIY  4 года назад

      Good idea to lock it down and skimcoat. I usually blade it on with a 14" knife because I can get it on thicker, usually one coat, but either works, you just may need more coats with this way.
