    I fixed this for no cost. I had the exact same sound coming from my steering wheel, and it would give resistance to turning. The horn did, however, work. I took off the airbag and rotated the wheel to check again for the noise. The noise was gone. I started the car and rotated the wheel lock to lock just to be sure -- no noise. I never took the wheel completely off. I simply re-installed the airbag and the problem was gone. I guess something about relieving the pressure on the "clock spring" allowed it to reset as I rotated the wheel. (The screws holding the airbag on were VERY tight.) No $250 part necessary! Yea!

      Sweet. I will try that out. Way better to tey that first before spending $100 plus on a new/used one

    It should lock like that. To prevent it from spinning. The white tab on the inside unlocks the clockspring once it’s mounted on steering column.

    What year is the E36 in the video?
    I have a 1998 328i with a grinding clock spring that needs replacement. I'm also curious where you purchased your new clock spring from. Part # too?
    Some part suppliers offer 'OEM' parts, but their electrical connections are not compatible. Since you got your new one to work, I was wanting know where and what part # you used.

    Thanks but how do I fasten the airbag to the steering wheel??

    My steering wheel makes a similar sound when turning and my right siren does not work. I have a four-spoke steering wheel in a 1991 BMW e36 (318) without airbaig. Could it be a similar problem?
    Or would it be better to buy a brand new steering wheel?

    • @Jay-May
      @Jay-May  6 месяцев назад

      Usually cars without airbags don't have clock springs. Usually on the older cars it's a horn ring located under the steering wheel. There will be a spring loaded connector on the back of the steering wheel and a copper or brass ring that makes contact with the connector on the steering wheel.

    • @Jay-May

      +Ray +Mythical_BullD0g Your issues would be related to the turn signal switch being broken, or the trigger to turn them off has broke. Completely separate issues.

    I have a '96 318i, probably a very similar clockspring situation... I can hear the creaking sound already. My question is if you had any issues reconnecting the battery?
    A manual that I read says that it can erase fault codes, stereo codes and affect the auto-roll on the windows. Did you have any occurrences or you simply reconnected the battery?
    Thanks

      Just giving my input here, i have a 99 323ic and have disconnected the battery plenty of times, if you have the stock head unit it will ask you for the security code, auto roll on the windows was never affected, and i didn't have any fault codes on but I'm pretty sure it clears them for the time being.

    I know this vid is old, sorry, but does anyone know if the error for the airbag light needs to be cleared with the scanner, or will the car detect the new part and turn the light off?

    • @Jay-May
      @Jay-May  7 лет назад +3

      The car should detect the new working part and clear the code on its own.

    You should also replace the plastic bearings while the steering wheel is off.

    This isn't a Fix.
    This is how to REPLACE the clock spring.
    I was looking at repairing it first.

    is it possible to fix it instead of replacing ? i have uncommon clock spring, which is pretty expensiive. Everyting work but squeaks a bit

    • @Revolauncher
      @Revolauncher 8 лет назад +2

      Try spraying lithium grease (white) in there. If you can get to it, di-electric grease would quiet it down too. I'm experiencing the same thing with a Hyundai Genesis sedan.

      Most likely. Your airbag light might eventually come on as well.

    What shoud I do?

    • @Jay-May
      @Jay-May  6 лет назад +1

      In most cases the light comes on because of a faulty sensor. Use a scanning/programming tool like IPA or others to track down which part is broken.
