Guess I'm hearing this 3 years later. Well, to me the Boss swamped out the sound. And the MXR that you Don't like actually sounded the best to me! As they say, to each their own.
Cool demo, man! Xotic sounds nice as hell. I know this video is 4 years old, but I got a suggestion for you in case you're not already doing something like this these days: if you're gonna continue to sidechain-gate the background noise to the guitar, I'd add a -∞dBFS floor, a small hold time, and a bit of a release time. Think it would benefit the actual "shoot-out" element of the video for those of us out there listening on HPs! Cheers!
No gate used here. What you’re probably hearing is the auto-level on the camera adjusting itself. Thanks for the suggestion and thanks for watching. The xotic was a real investment and I’ve used it everyday since i got it. I can highly recommend it! :)
I’ve tried all of these. The Boss is the noisiest pedal out of all. The MXR Dyno Comp is better than the Boss. I think the SP xotic compressor is the best but costs the most. The TC electronics is the cheapest price, kind of even in terms of sound with the MXR.
I got the Behringer CS400 which I think is a Boss CS-3 clone, but its kinda noisy. Was using a clean boost instead, but wanted to give compressors another chance and bought the TC one. And now I'm also a chimes addict :D
I think the DYNA Comp had a clearer and tight tone which would sound better for Leads and tighter Low end IMO. The Boss may have more boost but I believe it sounds more muddy when cranked so you loose some definition in your notes.. The DYNA Comp seemed to retain more of the natural tone of the guitar but just rolls off some of the high frequencies a bit. I'm not old school or new school I just let my ears be the teacher. what ever Compressor gives you what YOU are looking for then get it!
I have the boss and I hate it. The problem with it is you can’t dial in the compression in the right way. It has attack and sustain but the level knob acts as a volume knob. There is no ratio knob. That is the main problem.

Had you played with the knob settings on each pedal prior to using? They all just sounded like they weren’t worth a slot on the board. As in they just didn’t do enough to be worth it.
Ah, he's I had optimised each one to my personal taste. The piece I was paying uses two handed trapping as well as strumming and picking. Without the compressors the volume ranges quote a lot. The compressor helps to even it out and make it sounds smoother. It is pretty subtle though. :)
Really superficial reason not to buy the Boss, but the Xotic SP is excellent. Pricier than the Boss (from a price/performance pov the Boss wins), but a great compressor that's popular for a reason.
Yeah, I totally accept that it's a superficial reason not to buy the boss. I do have two other boss pedals on my board though so I also just wanted to share the love with some other brands. Will do a little more looking into the TC, but looks like its gonna take up the most real estate on a small board. Hate the Dynacomp... too severe! And the Boss sounded a little muddy to me. Thanks again for the help!
