    Which one would be best suited for fingerpicking on a Jazzmaster? Don’t want to impact tone too much, just fatten it up, improve volume consistency, and have a bit more attack.

    Prob the #1 application is getting a small tube amp to feel and play like it would at high volume.Big thing, considering even smaller venues are mixing lower signals into PA's, these days.
    Good trick is running the comp post drive or boost, and adjusting the mix knob to taste; that's where the mix is going to really shine, including if you're one of those who uses other modulations pre drive.
    The Cali76 has set a new standard by stacking 2 comps, a trick long employed by session/ studio musicians.You can get much the same by using two mini's , even add flavour by varying the circuit type.(Use to see guys stacking Boss CS3's, years ago).Simple or advanced as you need it.
    Peace.

    I must have 30 pedals but not a compressor. It seems like more of a feel pedal first and a tone altering pedal second. RUclips does not do compressor's any favor's either in attempting to distinguish between a good and a great compressor. These three seem like cant lose compressors though, based on other pedals from these great brands. Nice video.

    I Never knew it was a compressor I was hearing on all those records...Squeezing the signal kind of Brightens it and makes (especially position 4) a strat just sound unbelievably Nice... Im a Classic rock kinda guy.. So naturally I do gravitate to the squishier MXR pedal... It will if you push it give you grit... But its also very noisy. that Wampler pedal made me go HMMMM.

    I guess I'm in the camp that isn't convinced a compressor is needed. Maybe in a recording environment when you need a guitar riff someplace that blends well with the mix. But to me, the compressor removes your guitar's and your own playing personality/dynamics. Plus if you wanted your sound to be toned down, squeezed, etc., couldn't you adjust your playing technique and mess with your guitar's tone and volume controls in order to have the same effect as a compressor?

    • @dougyanez1710
      @dougyanez1710 4 года назад +7

      A compressor doesn't remove personality unless you get weird with it, and most people don't. You can still hear everything just fine and incorporate tons of dynamics. Compressors make things sound more consistent, richer, and smoother when used right. They not only make your playing sound better, they make your guitar sound more expensive and can help all your other fx sound much better by sending them a cleaned up/better sounding waveform to work with. They quiet down the loudest bits of the signal and boost up the quietest bits, giving things a more consistent volume. This doesn't mean a constant volume, just one with variation limited on the radical ends of the spectrum. The boosting of quieter sounds also gives the illusion of more sustain.
      So... no, compressors do things to the sound that guitar knobs won't do, so you can't replicate compression without a compressor or some sort of electric equipment which causes compression naturally, like cranking certain amps or using certain drive fx.

    Cool stuff, thanks for sharing this. I can hear you hitting your strings with your pick hand-probably has something to do with your proximity to the microphone?-anyways, even with headphones on, there’s no substitute for a little bit more volume...from YOUR amplifier. Nice funk improv, I get the impression that a Compressor, or several, must be an integral component for playing this style.

    Differences?
    MXR dosen't have a dry blend, which you need if you run it after drives.It is also not True Bypass.The
    SP, like all Xotic effects, uses superior components, and has a distinct and specific , nicely EQed tonality.The fact that it is arranged more simply isn't necessarily a bad thing for a compressor.More "set & forget".
    The Wampler is both TB and has the dry blend; it also offers a broad exterior tweaking option, and will "colour" sound the least; it is pretty utilitarian for a mini.
    Compression can be a vital tool if you learn how to use it; personally, I run a full function unit before drives, and a mini after.Haven't used the MXR in 20 years, but the Xotic is great, and I think the Ego is one of Wampler's best pedals.You do , often, get what you pay for with effects, especially when you're not dealing with limited run boutiques, or rare components.

    • @dr7246
      @dr7246 4 года назад

      Indeed. A compressor without a blend is of no interest to me. The wampler is great, but Xotic all the way for me. I just wish the dip switches were on the outside, as they are quite useful; changing them up makes real differences and unscrewing isn’t practical, if you want to take advantage of them live

    • @levgtz8158
      @levgtz8158 4 года назад

      I agree, blend is really important, I had a couple years using only parallel compression on anything at any stage. Just to me MXR has nothing to ask on component quality or sound from other brands. I suppose MXR is used by many artists because they are reliable, good voiced (eq'ed) and aren't noisy.
      I got tired of myself justifying high prices based on "features-that-I-think-I-will-use" trap. So, been tried the Dynacomp Mini (attack switch is important for relative transparency) I just bought it, at looks cool with MXR Sugar Drive mini aside.
