Heya everyone! So this was the Eastern Slavic Video I was teasing for a while! Y'all thought I wasn't gonna pull through huh? Not sure what I'll make next, I have some videos I made for Spanish I might use to fill the upcoming weeks, so maybe stay tunned for that! And then I might make good on that promise about the Holy Land and Dacian videos! (Maybe)
Volodymyr did not choose Orthodox over Catholicism. Volodymyr baptised himself and Rus around 990, while the split of Christianity into Catholic and Orthodox (a.k.a. the Great Schism) happened in 1054.
Kinda. While the official split was formalized in 1054, his decision to get baptized in Constantinople and not in Rome was deliberate to ally more with Byzantine empire.
first of all, I am writing as a Pole (ethnically Belarusian, but the difference is very small, as from Grodno to the east most of the peasants were of Belarusian nationality, despite the lack of a sense of belonging to it), there are many inaccuracies regarding the Polish participation in these events, as well as a lot of simplifications (especially if we are talking about the 19th and 20th centuries) which may lead to a deep misunderstanding of the topic by viewers unfamiliar with the region, but in terms of entertainment it is very cool Regards 😀
There is an anecdote in Poland that when a census was carried out in the eastern borderlands, when asked about their nationality, peasants answered "the local" (I say this as a descendant of such peasants, primarily to show a kind of process of including peasants in the society of the second Polish Republic)
@@thatstorm_spectre THIS IS ONLY MY OPINION, so if any Belarusian nationalist is reading me, please correct me the nation needs the intelligentsia/upper class to create culture, in the case of Belarus the nobility was culturally oriented towards Poland, the language of the nobility was Polish, individual people minimally tried to change it in the nineteenth century, but only after World War II the Soviet Union almost artificially created the Belarusian national identity with which is still a problem (as evidenced by the fact that even today in Belarus the Belarusian language is the second language spoken after Russian, due to its association with poverty and lack of education)
If I remember correctly, you recorded something similar about the relationship between Bessarabia and Moldova with Romania, but in the case of Belarus and Poland, Russification has gone too far to count on any possibilities of a federal state
The question is not whether Moscovy was a Rus nation or a Russian nation, because it was both! Moscovy or better put the Mosovites were a subsection of Eastern Slavic / Rus civilization, both culturally, linguistically and genetically, and therefore Russia is too, as Moscovy was the one to form Russia. The question is whether or not all of the Rus are Russian, which is a no. While the Russians are for sure descendants of the Rus so are the Ukrainians and Belarusians, but just because they're all Rus doesn't mean they're all Russians, or even the same in the first place. They're all equal people with equal lineage to the Rus but different cultures, languages, etc. A good comparison is the Latin countries, as Italy France, Spain, Portugal and Romania are all Latin countries with lineage to the Roman Empire but it doesn't mean that Romanians and Portuguese are Italians. And remember that names can be deceiving. The official name of the Byzantine Empire in Greek was Ρωμανία or Romania. So by that logic the Byzantine and therefore Roman Empires are Romanian.
This whole "Russia has nothing to do with Rus" idea that Ukrainians keep entertaining is quite stupid, it's like saying Romania has nothing to do with the Roman Empire. Both countries have their origin in the Kievan Rus but Ukraine had no attempt to build a nation in the modern era up until 1918 (and botched that one by making enemies of literally everyone around them which they do until today, showing they don't learn from history), so Russia remained the legacy of the Kievan Rus. Both sides try to weaponise history, Putin does it by denying the legitimacy of Ukrainian nationhood, Ukraine does it by mistifying history and pretending they have nothing to do with Russia. 15:31 Yeah, sorry, that's not true, Ukrainian is much closer to Russian than to Polish, it's enough to hear the languages to realize this. As a Romanian, I don't like either of these nations. Russia has kept Moldova hostage for nearly 80 years one way or another and is the bigger military threat while Ukraine has forcefully assimilated Romanian communities on the territories they stole and didn't give back. I root for Ukraine but not unconditionally like our government seems to do.
Well I'm afraid from what I've read of Applebaum, Subtelny and my IB education, it was Stalins Policy, but let me know if there's more I missed. Its possible I oversimplified the situation
@@thatstorm_spectre Ok, topics for study: Wall Street crash of 1929 and its consequences on global markets, industrialization of Soviets with imports from the west, payments for said imports in years preceding holodomor. I have no idea who the people you mentioned are, but I would expect any expert in the field would mention these quite important details.

I thought he was given the choice between christianity and islam

Thanks! Feel free to let me know what I got wrong, if it causes too much confusion I'll rework the Belarusian part into a seperate video

I also disagree with the example of Polotsk because it was more of a "Russian" principality than any culturally separate entity

Hey man I just wanna tell you your videos are very good and enjoyable! You should make some platform for fans to gather such as discord or sth

What is the logic behind recognizing Muscovy as Rus, but not as Russia? Rus is literally Russia in old Greek.
