this articulated a lot of feelings about critical reception for artists and why we're going in the direction we are as creators. looking forward to the 2nd verse slump: a well recieved snippet creates so much pressure to deliver that it interferes with the artist's process of finishing the same song, releasing a contrived end product that was better as a snippet, and having the same effect on their career as a difficult second album but on a time frame suited to short form culture. video make brain gear turn
like i said, expectations are tricky things. there’s a bit of an anxious anticipation going into a new album from an artist you love. i think it’s an important (although difficult) task to be mindful of how artistic expression changes over years (and albums). it sucks when an album isn’t what we expect, but i try not to conflate subversion of expectations with a drop in quality sometimes albums do just suck though haha
Would Hootie and The Blowfish qualify? They fell off after the second album, but lead singer Darius Rucker then got back and became a hitmaker in the Country scene.
probably, i think that introduces a separate but related dynamic about who survives a “fall-off” from a group. it’s interesting to see how welcomed (or shunned) certain members of a group are after it splits. interesting thing to bring up for sure
pinkerton was so fucking good back then too its like nobody realized until recent years
I wish it had been successful, I think its relative failure made them afraid to experiment and led to a lot of the later "meh" music
I enjoyed this video a lot bro. Great work! I myself am starting to attempt to branch off with my own content and this inspires me! :)

i think Ethel Cain is the artist i'm the most scared for because her debut album was so amazing
