Sadly that's not going to happen, I think Tomorrowland should be called Todayland and have Autopia rethemed to Mickey's Speedway USA or Sugar Rush with character statues and TV screens. I personally want maglev hovercars in our roads and hoverboards over our sidewalk streets.

Bring it back. It’s the simple thing in Life, if Disney can spend millions of dollars stripping down Splash mountain that everyone Loved and didn’t want it to go, and millions to revamp the area and ride, they can bring something back that us guests have been asking for the last 2 decades!

Yes and Tiana's Bayou Adventure was so barebones it's missing many iconic critters and humans from The Princess and the Frog including no Pink Flamingos, no 3 possums hanging on a tree branch by their tails, no Reggie, Darnell, Two Fingers, no lady butterflies dancing, no Lawrence or Dr. Facilier and his shadow spirits, dolls, masks, and putting in a contradiction song Dig a Little Deeper instead of the last verse of "Almost There" or "Friends on the Other Side for the drop off. What Disneyland and Disney World imagineer construction workers should do to fix Tiana's Bayou Adventure so it's more fun is add extra pink flamingo statues, 3 possums on a tree branch, and add more TV screens or hologram projectors to add stock footage of iconic scenes from The Princess and the Frog and add a real exciting dropoff song and I personally haven't even been on Tiana's Bayou Adventure and I'm very letdown how it feels exactly like Jungle Cruise ride.
Heck, I would have Jungle Cruise ride rethemed to add TV screens and show iconic scenes from Jungle Cruise 2021 movie, I'm done with a man or woman tour guide talking to us, it's so 1960s, I'd rather have it be with smaller boats carrying 4 people with covers that auto move on the water rail and we can relax and watch Jungle Cruise 2021 movie clips and add the villains from the movie.
As for the people mover, it's not going to happen, it's highly unlikely because of that darn inflation in the 2020s which forces all of use Disneyland guest to budget more, so we'll just have to walk around Disneyland which is good exercise. I wouldn't mind if they get rid of the all you can eat food buffet in Disneyland because it's over $90 and a ripoff.

I have an idea of how Disney could bring back the peoplemover. In the movie Black Panther (2018), the nation of Wakanda features a futuristic maglev railway system. Currently, there is no attraction occupying the second floor of the former Carousel of Progress building. Have the second floor converted into the new loading and unloading station with the theme being Shuri’s laboratory. The new ride vehicles would have a Wakandan influenced design and would be moved along the track via a LIM system similar to the one used by peoplemover system in Magic Kingdom. A walkway may have to be installed along both sides of the track (some portions may have replaced due damage) but a faux maglev poles/rings would installed to give the illusion of the train being moved by magnets. This theme may be a future proof the attraction and at the same time create a tie in to Avengers Campus at California Adventure.

I first visited Disneyland in 1968, the year after the PeopleMover debuted. I was 6 years old and became completely enraptured by Tomorrowland. It was alive and vibrant. It had this tremendous positive sense of "what if". The PeopleMover was a huge part of that. I would dearly love to see a return of the 1967 Tomorrowland design esthetic and a return of the PeopleMover. I think that the 1967 version of Tomorrowland could succeed today as a sort of retro-futurism that would prevent Tomorrowland from ever becoming outdated. I really enjoyed this video. I rode PM as a kid. The ride was enjoyable because of the view and because it just allowed you to decompress. But even beyond that, the PM was part of the movement of the area. All those colorful cars moving up and above the crowds where they could be seen in so many locations added an amazing and unique element to Tomorrowland.
As far as the motors and vehicles, I would be very surprised if Disney used that antiquated tech. My guess is they would use the same tech used in Luigi's Rollickin' Roadsters. Another existing tech, Dynamic Wireless charging, could easily keep the vehicles charged without them ever stopping. As long as the entire path is still there, the challenges would be minor.

Putting the Peoplemover in the new (1968) Tomorrowland was an introduction of its proposed use in Walt's original EPCOT vision, used from the city center out to the suburbs (and the use of the driver motors took a LOT of electricity, BTW). The WDW version uses electro magnets, as a linear induction, but would not work for DL, because of the grades and elevations (it's totally flat at MK). I've heard that there are stress cracks on the original DL PM track, and it would have to be totally rebuilt.

As a kid who grew up in the 60's and 70's in Orange, California, we went to Disneyland quite a bit. Our family moved to the Midwest and now, as an adult, I live in Texas. Though I've taken my family back to Disneyland a couple of times in the last 10 years, we're now more WDW people. Watching this video reminds me how sad Disneyland's Tomorrowland is and how superior is that of the Magic Kingdom's. It is the epitome of kinetic energy, from the People Mover to the speedway cars to the Astro Orbiter, and now Tron. I do hope Disneyland can find a way to bring this back. If not, I hope they will have the will to do something with their Tomorrowland. It really is a shell of of it's former self. Jim, love this insight! But we Disney fans are constantly getting our hopes raised, and then dashed, even with the big projects Half realized, galaxy’s edge, the unfinished avengers campus. The bottom line is money, and lots of it would be required to bring the old people move track up to current safety codes. Tomorrowland would need to be shut down for an extended period of time, and Disney still needs the park capacity. What may happen is a new version of the people mover that connects The long rumored Harbor Boulevard parking structure to the promenade.

We spent plenty of time in what was the waiting area for Circlevision where the queue was located just to get on Rocket Rods. It was an okay ride for trying to fit something onto an existing track. I would much rather have seen them keep the People Mover that gave a relaxing, scenic view of the park.

WE BETTER BE ON TIME. otherwise we would have to stay together as a family the next day or time. 7:00 I had a friend who worked in the Little Green Men store after the Buzz ride and he said there is a door to the immediate left of the cashier desk. If you open that door, you'll go down a set of stairs to their overstock inventory. That room is actually the part of the Rocket Rods queue that goes up to the station. It is all still in tact. If you close off that store (crazy I know), you can reattach the queue. I will say that this was info given to me 10 or so years ago so things might have changed since then. I've also heard that Baxter was to do something with the track but then the 2008-09 housing crash happened after Disney already allocated $2 billion to fix DCA and Disney stopped all that.

Subscribed! Great episode - the Peoplemover truly was one of the best rides in Tomorrowland.
One of the reasons against returning that I've heard is if it is brought back, it has to be ADA compliant for wheelchairs and other disabilities. As the vehicles are so short, there would have to be numerous points of access to an elevator/unloading area along the raised platform to allow people needing to exit the ride a place to do so. With the original design, this would be cost prohibitive and probably not even possible.
I think a good solution to this problem would be to have the trains be very long - potentially as long as the full circle of the loading platform (or even longer) - with cars that allowed access down the middle/side of the car, from the front to the back in case of a ride breakdown or other event that required people to disembark. With longer trains, then you would need even fewer ADA compliant exit points. Imagine having multiple Peoplemover series of cars that are each as long as a football field, slowly snaking through Tomorrowland. You might give up some of the variable speed capabilities for different parts of the track, but you'd have literally hundreds of people on the ride at one time and allow guests to get off their feet and enjoy the elevated views like we did in the past.
I know there would be numerous logistical things to work out, but use the electrical busbar already there (if possible) and figure out where the ADA access points can go and base your overall vehicle length on those locations. I have no doubt that Disney Imagineering could solve these issues and improve on what was once a unique ride experience that would have high capacity and be extremely popular.

My thought/hope is that as "Disneyland Forward" is created, perhaps the PeopleMover could be revived to connect the more distant parts of the property (in a way similar to the Monorails at WDW) to functionally connect the various pieces (and perhaps even the parking lot(s)). You know, to "move people!" :)

That was interesting, I don't know why but I thought the People Mover used some sort of linear induction motor to move it around and not rotating tires. But I guess that's why Goodyear was sponsoring the ride. That said, unless the damage to the track way was "exaggerated" (lied) I don't feel like it's going to come back

I don’t think containment would be an issue because it seems to run fine at Magic Kingdom without the containment. I also think they can use the Carousel Progress/ Star Wars Launch Bay as the new station as it is really just a waste of space now. I wish they used the time during the Covid closure to get this done. Would’ve been perfect.

It was a must ride for me after that in every trip to Disneyland till it closed. Never got to ride the Rocket Rods. It is sad to see the track sitting there abandoned. Not at Disneyland. It’s been well established that the track that was the People Mover (later damaged by the Rocket Rods), is no longer physically able to support a ride. Talk of removing the track from the main entrance of Tommorowland to the hub by Star Trader has been thrown around for a while.
It’s a sad thing for sure. Tomorrowland has been in need of a serious overhaul for well over a decade. If what’s happening to Critter Country & Haunted Mansion is any indication, we could close most of Tomorrowland and park attendance will be just fine.

All these people thinking the pathway/roadbed and pillars are damaged are actually wrong. From what I read, the Disney company fully intended on bringing the people mover back after the failure of the Rocket Rods, however, the ceo changed and America went into a recession and a new people mover went up in smoke and was all but forgotten. Now, at one point, yes, the track structures were bad from wear and tear and time, but, those have since been repaired due to the other structures they support. One of the key reasons Disney doesn't want to restore it is because it would mean shutting down other rides temporarily, 1 at a time, while new people mover track and wiring was being installed. This would include each of these rides and stores for 1 week to a month: Star Tours, Star Trader, Space Mountain, the Carousel Theater/Carosel of Progress. I do believe that they could re-open the original cue for access. I also believe that they could definitely adapt it for linear induction or LIMS.

  • @larrybremer4930

It is ultra unlikely it would return on the original trackway because it was heavily compromised by Rocket Rods (which is the main reason Rocket Rods closed, even though it was also maintenance intensive and expensive to operate with a pathetic hourly capacity). Also building regulations have changed along with OSHA safety requirements and ADA regulations and the need to be able to actually evacuate a stuck vehicle under contemporary regulations instead of the old method that in many places meant you were stuck until they could move the vehicle to one of the areas where you could exit to a walkway. Keep in mind that a revamp of the old ride would not be grandfathered to those old codes because it was reworked into Rocket Rods.
What would be more likely (but also highly expensive) would be to remove Submarine Voyage and Autopia entirely, along with some rerouting of the Monorail and removal of all the trackage of the old Peoplemover since all of that sits on top of the show building for Submarines. That would free up a huge area, enough for one or two entirely new lands and multiple new e-ticket dark rides because truth be told the Submarines and Autopia is by far the most under utilized space in this very space constrained park and both of those rides have extreme operational cost and notoriously low capacity. In that plan they should build an all new peoplemover that visits these new areas and maybe even parts of Fantasyland. They could also use a LIM drive like Disneyworld version instead of the motor and tires locomotion of the old Disneyland iteration. That is the only plan that makes sense IMHO.

Thank you for sharing your perspectives with us, Jim! I have so much respect for creative minds like you and your generation of Imagineers, giving us incredible unique ideas for the parks.
The PeopleMover should instead follow the WestCOT preliminary master plan from the 90s where it would act as resort transport between the parking garages and the Disneyland Promenade. The tram system is very time consuming and exhausting for guests.
Same thing goes with the Skyway if Disneyland chooses to include a Skyliner system for hotel/theme park resort transport just like at WDW.
These park attractions from the past should not return in the parks and I believe having them integrated with public transportation is what Walt Disney originally envisioned years ago, a way to honor the legacy he left behind for creative minds like you.
Unfortunately WDI is not what it used to be and there are now few Imagineers who have the passion or the allowance from the bullish corporate leadership for fresh ideas that honor Walt Disney’s legacy.

As much as I'd love to have the People Mover come back, I don't see that ever happening. But what are imagineers going to do with the rapidly decaying People Mover track? Over the years, Disney hasn't shown much interest in bringing back the ride or tearing down the track. Therefore, guests are left with an eyesore of a Tomorrowland, which was once the pride of the entire park.

Oh god of course People Mover is beloved and missed and I rode it every time I went growing up and rode it when I worked there. But if the reason it could be brought back is because it's fun and it's a great value proposition, then I think it's gone forever in any form. It's too costly to maintain, it has no IP attached and takes up too much footprint. I think the best solution is to finally scrap Tomorrowland entirely in favor of some other land. Sadly, for the People Mover to return it would require the Disney of today to give fans what they want. That Disney is gone not to return, as the amount of time, money and design is just way too much. I rode the PM more times than I can count as a kid, so I would love for it to come back. But I also know the Disney of today is all about doing the least amount of work possible as to get the biggest returns. Bringing back the PM goes against everything the company now stands for. So unless they see a way forward that lines their pockets for their efforts, the PM is gone, and the decaying track will be a constant reminder of what once was, and what will never be again. Thanks for the video Jim, and your past efforts in making the magic.

    So a few things.......
    #1.) Magnetic propulsion...(the track's already plumbed....so utilize it!)
#2.) Existing railway can easily be reinforced. That's what architectural engineering is for. (I'm so tired of this excuse!)
#3.) Logistics are hogwash. Disney does some of the most foolish things logistically that I've ever seen. A 5 yr old could redesign entrance/cue and exit and that's if we didn't simply reinstate the original version which might be the simplest of all. It's a CIRCLE for crying outloud!
#4.) Put the rockets back on top & gain real estate back to the front of tomorrowland. (We already have a Dumbo ride....we don't need 2)
#5.) Put the Skyway back....(and, yes I have solutions for that as well) I added this because it's also a sad missing puzzle piece.
All the above would be an exercise in efficiency the likes of which Disney hasn't seen since they built the parking structure.

You say it's not possible to put the access back in for the peoplemover ride. You say the drive system can't be renovated because it's been removed. You say other things that sound difficult to reverse, Yes, all these things are true. But no one said running the greatest theme park in the world was easy. All these things can be done with money. And it's not like Disneyland isn't making money. Look at ticket prices. Put the ride back in (maybe make it MagLev). And my broader feeling is, redesign Tomorrowland, top to bottom. Move Star Tours to Galaxy's Edge (or get rid of it), put something amazing in The Carousel Theatre, Get some future technologies installed so that there's magic again.
