  • This film shows how my stoneware straight sided, stepped teapots are made from beginning to end. It includes every little single step along the way and is a long video, my longest yet in fact, so do let me know if you manage to watch it all the way through to the end and least I forget, Happy New Year!
If you'd like to see what I'm up to daily check out my Instagram: / floriangadsby
If you'd like to watch a video that explains the reduction firing process in a lot more detail you can find that here: • Loading and Reduction ...
    Timecodes:
    00:00 - Introduction
00:30 - Wedging clay for teapot bodies
    01:18 - Throwing teapot body
07:07 - Preparing clay for lids
    08:05 - Reversing measured callipers
    08:20 - Throwing lid
    10:19 - Throwing spout
12:12 - Unwrapping components from drying overnight
13:56 - Trimming the teapot body and lid
18:15 - Demonstrating how the lid's hole functions
20:29 - Attaching the spout to the teapot body
25:44 - Pulling and attaching the handle
31:34 - Carving the handle and quality control
33:31 - Packing the electric kiln for a bisque firing to 1000ºc
33:44 - Unpacking the electric kiln
    35:10 - Waxing the teapot
    36:38 - Mixing up glaze
    37:10 - Glazing the teapot
38:28 - Cleaning up the glazed lid and body
41:23 - Preparing the waddings for the lid
42:00 - Packing the gas kiln
43:05 - Firing the gas kiln to 1290ºc, (cone ten)
45:18 - Unpacking the gas kiln
45:33 - Sanding the base of the teapot
    46:49 - Removing the waddings
47:09 - Using valve grinding paste to smooth the join
47:59 - Making a cup of of tea, (earl grey)
    48:52 - The finished teapot
My wadding recipe is: 50% china clay/kaolin, 50% coarse alumina hydrate. Mix together slowly and then combine with water very slowly, as it seems to turn to a liquid very easily, so add less than you think.
The gas kiln is a Rohde KG-340, my potter's wheel is a Rohde HMT 500 and my electric kiln is a Rohde TE-200.
    Thanks for watching!

Really inspiring video, and so informative. Have just thrown my 1st 3 teapots in the "Gadsby" style and can now appreciate the amount of skill and timing that's involved in simply finishing a pot. Hopefully when glazed they may look ok but the level of finesse that you show can only come with time, effort, repetition and an understanding of how clay and glazes marry to achieve such beautiful pots.
