First one is a clean hard hit leading with shoulder and moving head away. Textbook hit
TehhHarm I know. Im still trying to figure out how that was targeting.
TehhHarm i was there for that game and the refs got a police escort away
Modell Highlights it wasn't. NCAA is getting soft
TehhHarm yeah
Nah brig they were all clean hits
The BYU call was the worst ever
Mrbeast Beast no.2 That was just the refs being jerks
the reason that they called it targeting was because the play before was also a targeting.
I agree with Mike Pereira. The NCAA needs to do something with this rule because too many innocent players are getting ejected for no reason at all.
Luckily it's not happening in the NFL since hits are cleaner in nfl
The trouble appears to be: there's never a successful appeal.
The Minnesota one had to be the worst one in my opinion. The NCAA needs to do something about these targeting calls over the off-season.
Demarcus Barfield I was at the game and we literally booed until the game ended
Demarcus Barfield well the SEC has the right idea. they have officials not on the field in Birmingham that look at every targeting call
Demarcus Barfield I agree he tackled him didint lead with his helmet at all the refs just like to screw the teams over and it's bullshit
They may LOOK at it, but rarely if ever overturn it, therefore it is pure CORRUPT OFFICIATING!!! And the NCAA is part of the problem.
maybe next time the defender should dropkick the receiver to avoid any doubt. INFURIATING!
3:28 “this ones a lil iffy” yeah okay just stop. He grazed his face mask are you kidding me
The best part is that, especially the Penn State one as he was going for ball, if rolls were reversed, no penalty
That last call was the most absurd of them all. So basically the defense isn't allowed to try to catch the ball or tackle anyone above the ankle for fear of a targeting call.
the last one was the only one that could be deemed as the wrong call, but the rules do NOT state the targeting has to be intentional, just a hit to a defenseless players head, which unfortunately this was
Targeting calls are just another way to manipulate the scores of the games, the new rule was the best news sports bookies got in years.
The Penn State vs Michigan was the worst in my opinion. I'm a Michigan fan but that penn state player got hosed he was clearly going for the ball & almost made a hell of a play.
College football in 2020
Ref: "Illegal tackling, number 21 is disqualified from the game"
Caster: "You can see here the receiver actually double-knots his flag football flags around the belt, making it impossible for the defensive player to pull them off."
Caster 2: "Well, as a defensive player, you just _can't_ tackle an offensive player. If you can't pull their flags off then let them go. Good call by the refs!"
That's awesome. Sad but true.
First tackle was textbook. DC's everywhere would love that play
I don't blame the on field refs for throwing the flag for targeting because at game speed it happens so fast and all targeting calls are reviewed. its the video ref that is dropping the ball since he gets to see it in slow mo and a multiple camera angles and still blows the call. that's inexcusable
Craig Hansen faxxs
Ya but they go under review with the tackle
Craig Hansen Then make it a simple personal foul not an ejection
That's what one of the announcers had said. The problem isn't the amount of penalties they call, its the amount of ones that stand is the problem.
Craig Hansen No Replay at the Jr. High or High School level .. or on non televised Division II games in college .. Dumb rules. Thanks to Jerry Jones and the inbreds of the "Competition Committee" ... the ruin of a once rugged and beautiful sport where you could hit with all your might.... I'd love to see Dick Butkus resend the award bearing his name because of the rule changes.
I wonder what the conversation between McChesney and Nacua was when Austin walked into the lockeroom.
Waiting for entire teams to walk off the field after some of these...
The pussification of football
YA MEAN THA PUSSIFACATION OF NFL NOT COLLEGE FOOTBALL NOR NFHS ( MEANING HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL)
These are all inexcusable, but the last one the most so, clearly making a play on the ball.
I can't wait for this to get so bad that safety's start ending kid's careers by taking out their knees to avoid an absurd "targeting" call.
OregonOffense I don't think it'll get THAT bad.
Then the NCAA fuckbois will make it targetting to go too low or too high. Might as well break out the flags now.
We are just a few years away from getting sarcastaball.
If im playing safety and they are calling those targeting you are god damn right im going for you hips and your legs EVERYTIME. This is weak 99% of the time on targeting its the offensive players fault for ducking his head, juking, etc. ITS STUPID. If you blindside someone in the head thats targeting.
Or even worse... we'll start seeing QB's and WRs leading with their head to try and draw targeting and you'll see injuries increase instead of decline
I think the rule is so subjective and the penalty so severe, that refs can use it to determine the outcome of a game with a strategically timed call against just the right player.
it's why there are so many things in this world where the "Powers that BE" control who gets promoted or not. These Ref's made sure certain teams lost
I think offensive players will have to start losing their careers due to full force knee shots for this targeting nonsense to be reevaluated.
Either that or start looking at offensive targeting as well. If you drop your head as a runner, you're intentionally putting yourself at risk and perhaps even initiating the helmet to helmet contact. If the defensive player is going for a shoulder to chest tackle, and the offensive player lowers his head...it's the offensive player who caused the contact.
Kenneth Higley, you DO know there is a difference between a runner and what's deemed a defensiveness player, right?
@@davidrooks3274 There's also a difference between a defenseless player and a runner ducking in anticipation of the hit/tackle. Ruling should go both ways. Consistency.
@@stonemedia8901 let's go through this play by play, the first play?? not targeting, not to the head, was a good hit. the 2nd play, very close, not going for the ball and hit him high, debatable, but a good call, the 3rd play(and this is what I think you are talking about) receiver drops his head and there is head to head contact, but this is why I think it's a good call, the receiver is focused on catching the ball, the defensive player is focused on the receiver, hit him a bit lower, he literally has 1 step to protect himself, the 4th, the defensive player is going for the ball, not a good call, not targeting. so 3 out of the 4 are good calls. when I played I always went for the numbers, best way to make sure you make the stop, if the 3 that I believe ARE targeting would have went for the number, not targeting would have been called, bottom line, you HAVE to learn to play within the rules, the rules say no going for the head, what should you do???? not go for the head
@@davidrooks3274 I think your missing what I'm implying the rule should stipulate. I agree that many of the defensive hits are clean and legal. I just think when a running back or receiver ducks his head down to where his "number" is, he's no longer considered a defenseless player. Thus targeting is overruled in those cases.
@@stonemedia8901 ruclips.net/video/-jN-Klm6JMc/видео.html now tell me these are bad calls too
The last clip wasn't even targeting Im a Penn State Fan And He Was Going For The Pick
I'm a Michigan fan and I completely agree. This was a terrible call.
I'm a Michigan fan, and I TOTALLY agree with you
you know its a terrible call when the opposing fan base starts booing it
The Penn st one, like wtf his arms were out like how you gonna call targeting when he is trying to intercept the ball. Doesn’t even look like he was trying to tackle the guy
He wasn't even looking at the receiver, he was focused on the ball.
Welcome to Carolina Gamecocks where we always get shorted ended in the games and refs are ALWAYS against us 😂
When u get ejected for trying to catch the ball and the offensive player leans his head into you
Funny how BYU got it not once, but TWICE against Utah. And both made the list. (Part 1 and part 2).
Remember the big bottle throwing melee at that Browns game a few years back? Mark my words--if they don't significantly change the targeting rule, you are going to see something similar at some College Football stadium when one of these bogus calls costs a team a game.
americasevilgenius yeah even though I'm not a Browns fan, I'm a Bengals fan I would have to say that the Browns got screwed on that call
There was the PSU call at the end, I still can't believe they did that
Super Dick Same. Even the commentators couldnt believe it
Modell Highlights Hey thanks for adding the other BYU one. The refs were just being jerks there
BYU Bob Welcome. I agree
I’m a Michigan Fan and that call should’ve been reversed 100%
@Damon Preston I noticed when the ref confirmed the call UM fans didn't go crazy like it was a good call.....
If you don't wanna get hit, play Baseball or Basketball, Do Not play Hockey or Football
Drama or golf would be a better choice. Baseball there’s hit by pitches and basketball has a lot of contact
So basically if you want to get a player kicked out of the game, hit them with your facemask as they try to tackle you?
I get why these are called, I really do, but they need to change the rule a bit
In the Tennessee vs. S. Carolina if anything that's targeting on the receiver
Juice Tv
L
Indeed, I agree
he was fishing for that targeting call
Nah he ducked his head
Juice Tv exactly
Lol they need to make offensive targeting with that Tennessee catch
As someone who lives in Knoxville, I agree. The "targeting" rule should apply the offensive players as well if they're ducking down in anticipation of the hit.
A lot of these borderline targeting calls used to be ruled "incidental contact"!
The Minnesota hit was called likely for perceived crown of the helmet but the call was made from behind the play where it looked like that
That last one was ridiculous, no targeting as he had his eyes on the ball. Rest dubious too.
That kid from Penn State was clearly making a play on the ball and grazed the guy’s face mask. How the Hell could that possibly be upheld
That last one though, he was only trying to catch the ball lol geez
Great video, Keep up the good work!
😲College football is about to become😔 200 points on offense and nobody on defense... smh😕
big 12?
New football strategy: Offense lower shoulder to ensure defense hits you in the head = free 15 yards and ejection of opposing team.
I'm still bitter about those 2 calls against BYU in the same game...
I agree all those calls were poor, but the Penn Michigan game is exceptionally poor
BLAPYOU I'm a michigan fan and even I felt bad for that PSU player. He was going for the ball. Terrible call.
actually targeting doesn't have to be intentional, it just has to be a hit to the head, granted he was going for the ball but he DID make contact with his head, good call
The only one that wasn’t poor, in my opinion, was the Tennessee v. S. Carolina one.
If there was such a thing as a wrongful ejection lawsuit, pretty sure that there'd be a load of zebras facing penalties, thus getting a taste of their own medicine.
+Andy Szwejda
So....why don't you start a movement to fire all the NCAA officials. They could call 8 guys out of the stands and have them call the game. You'll be happy because those suck refs won't be there.
....enjoy the results
If officials don’t make the targeting call, they will be suspended or fired. Same is true for all other fouls.
This is where the refs are abusing their power, and taking the fun out of the game. I do remember some high school kids intentionally hitting the ref like a year ago because of bad calls.
completely wrong, the referee had ejected a kid for targeting on that high school team and the kid did target, the other kids attacked the referee, it wasn't "hitting the referee" they were taken to court for assault and kicked off the team as well as suspended
“Personal foul, targeting on the defense, he tapped the receiver’s shoulder, play is under review”
That call against Penn State was the worst targeting call ever, he was clearly diving for the ball and did not intend to hit the Michigan player.
There needs to be two classes or targeting. First degree and second degree, second degree being the iffy ones where it is VERY "debatable" on the intention or even the contact of head to head. First degree would be obvious targeting. Second degree would be delegated with a warning and first degree would be an ejection.
They missed a clear roughing the passer on BYU anyway
That PSU one is horrible as well. Man can't make a play on the ball?!?
The Tennessee vs South Carolina game, the ref just wanted to show his muscles.
The first hit was a damn Textbook tackle come on are you fucking kidding me. 🤦🏽♂️
I agree player safety is paramount! even accidentally hitting players head should be penalized but if no intent its not targeting. ejection!s Should be restricted to intended foul. even half the distance to the goal and player benched for a quarter would seem fair serious and show property concern about concussion. needs to be separate penalty for accidental foul.
ozzymandistwenty14 I understand what your saying, but if there is accidental head contact doesnt that mean there was no intent since it was all accidental
ozzymandistwenty14 The problem is it gets tricky distinguishing between intentional and incidental targeting
Modell Highlights When it comes to the rule book, intent actually doesn't matter for a targeting call to be made. The word "intent" never appears.
Fuck you. If players want to be safe, don't play a game that's all about running full force into other super athletes.
Bloodcaine Tell that to the hundreds of former players suffering from symptoms of chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) as a result of repeated trauma to the head during their football career, from superstars like Ken Stabler, Earl Morrall, Frank Gifford and Andre Waters, each of whom had CTE confirmed after death. How about the living stars showing some symptoms of the disease. Men like Bernie Kosar, Jamal Lewis, Jim McMahon, Tony Dorsett and Brett Favre. How about the thousands of former players listed in more than 40 separate lawsuits over football related injuries that the NFL settled with in 2013. Or maybe you'd just like to talk to the families of Junior Seau and Dave Duerson, both of whom took their own lives rather than live with the debilitating effects of CTE. Player safety has to be paramount, especially the more we learn about the causes and long-lasting effects of what used to be routine trauma. If it's not, then our perspective about what's truly important in this life is all screwed up.
That last call was so bad even the Michigan fans disagreed.
Oh And I Like Purdue's Away Uniform Vs Minnesota That White Jersey Was So Gangsta
Second time DJ smith has been on a video like this
4:34 that ref certainly is a weylan smithers.....
I think people are forgetting that the refs are seeing the hits in real time. However during upon the reviews, they go full snowflake mode if decide the call stands.
This garbage is ruining football. The players know the risks. Let them play the damn game like it's supposed to be played. I don't think targeting should apply to any play except for when a WR isn't looking and it's helmet to helmet or a QB is sliding and it's helmet to helmet. Half the time they call targeting just because it's a big hit, even if the defender leads with their shoulder. BS.
Damn, ref at 4:30 doesn't skip arm day
If I run like a bull with my head lowered all game can they legally tackle me? I'll just run into their helmet and get them ejected till they are all gone
Looking at these so called "targeting" tackles, either the Officials just don't know what the hell they are doing, or, they are corrupt, perhaps making bets on the side somehow, this really needs looked into but, with corruption at every level, I doubt they'll ever look into sorting out these wrong calls
Good vid. All plays shown were bad calls imo. Usually with compilations you find one or two you disagree on... not this one.
how was the PSU one possibly targeting? not only was it obvious that he was just going for the interception, he didn't even make helmet-to-helmet contact. his shoulder just accidentally hit the defender's head
the coach of psu should have tried to fight the ref. worst call i have ever seen.
And he wasn't even looking at the reciever, he was going for the int.
Was the band playing the mortal kombat theme at the beginning?
That BYU vs Utah game was ruined by two target if calls. Horrible.
1st one was a perfect tackle, just can't take a hit
I pray that the NCAA reinstates players of bullshit penalty calls like this one.
shame they won't though
From what I’m seeing on the comment section, apparently people want the XFL to return.
how can u leave out jacob pughs hit vs nc state
From someone not from the US but who likes very much American Football I can tell you from the outside that the initiative to address the issue of 'targeting' is long overdue and should be welcome. In the long run it will save the game and protect the long term health of the players. Yes, referees will make some mistakes, as highlighted here, but in the end it will improve the sport. For me the key litmus test is "would he have put his head into the player in that way if he didn't have a helmet?". If the answer is no then it is reckless and should be called targeting. In the Purdue-Minnesota the tackle was perfectly fair and well intentioned, though strong. The last one (Penn-Michigan) also was a genuine attempt to catch the ball and should have been reversed. I actually agree with the BYU call, even though the contact was glancing it was a cheap shot and he would not have gone in like that if he didn't have a helmet.
Georgia vs vandy 2013. Ramik Wilson makes a perfect form tackle hit on vandys 4th down conversion. Targeting gets called but ejection is reversed. Vandy gets the 15 yards moves into red zone and wins game. The most BS targeting I've ever seen...
3:14 Daggum. Last i Checked in the rule book, balls that are tipped, caught Blocks can be made like that. READ THAT DAMN RULE BOOK!!
Yep
joey bosa vs Notre same should be in the next one
4:30 look! It's the bad guy from Moster's Inc.
well, looks like there can't be any contact in football anymore. if you even give them a high five personal foul.
Flag on the field confirming that the defensive player tackled the ball carrier he is now ejected for playing his position
I agree with the call for two and three.
Bro you can’t even hit anybody anymore with out getting a targeting call
wow those kids play 12 games and get disqualified for non intentional contact to the head/neck area?? even if the defenseless player ducks??
crazy shit there
i agree that was not targeting with minn but BYU yes
there has been bad targeting when the same team hit each other, but they don't call those fouls.
And they sports aren't rigged lol
Ruined the game, honestly.
Danny Bailey I think it's a good safety penalty. but it shouldn't be so strict and enforced.
+Jacob Petty when super athletes run full force into each other, there is no such thing as safety. These rules shouldn't be in the game and they've made the sport worse
Jacob Petty Exactly.
Look at the guns on that ref at 4:31!
American Football be like: I need my players to be as big as possible, as strong as possible, as fast as possible, and hit as hard as possible!
NCAA be like: You can't hit someone that hard...Its not safe..
I was taught: You can do one of two things... Make the Play Or Make the Hit.. You can never go wrong with making the hit
what do the letters mean on the back of the umpires?
corey dickson R = Referee, U = Umpire, H = Head Linesman/Down Judge, L = Line Judge, F = Field Judge, S = Side Judge, B = Back Judge
the first official watched the replay and then threw the damn flag!!
Go for the knees of wr's end they career stay in the game, can't really avoid targeting if the offensive player lowers their head too...
With the rule changes now it’s going to be 1000 times worse flags on every play
This targeting rule has gone too far! I know they're trying to protect the players, but this rule has gone too far.
NO the absolute worst one is BYU. Minnesota, there was very minimal helmet contact (if any). BYU CLEARLY didn't touch his helmet or facemask. I am a steeler fan so I've seen some helmet to helmets...these arent even close. Its a game changer (stops plays. Ejects players) and if you make that call and are wrong then you need to be held accountable.
Brian Hammer by rule, even though he “grazed the face mask,” he still hit a defenseless receiver leading with the crown of his helmet, which is a targeting.
There's still no way in hell that Smitty did that shit on purpose. He was going for the ball. I went to high school with him, he doesn't do that. Im talking about the last clip, the penn state game. He was clearly trying to intercept.
That BYU one was laughably bad. It looks like it real time, but watching over and over at multiple angles, how the hell is that targeting. Absolute joke. The PSU one could be enforced because he does actually make forcible contact to the helmet, but it shouldn't, because like they said, he was going for the ball.
Chesson no way that should have been called he didn't even know where the receiver was he was trying to catch it
Yeah, that's what I said.
Chesson What's the PSU?
Penn State University
Chesson nah it doesn't look like targeting at all
The BYU -Utah and Tennessee-South Carolina ones are correct but all the other ones are bad calls. BYU-Utah is the iffiest of them all but McChesney doesn't do anything to try to go after the ball. Instead he goes after the player, although it isn't hard contact. DJ Smith of South Carolina does the text book definition of targeting, where instead of going after the ball to jar the ball loose, he goes after the player. To improve your likelihood of staying in the game with these kinds of hits, you have to do something to go after the ball without going after the player. You can wrap up really hard and do that.
Where's the two targeting calls that the Arkansas corner got this year that were totally bullcrap? The one against Texas A&M especially.
The South lost the Civil War
Good too Know that the refteam from the First Clip got fired from the ncaa
its funny college football throws targeting out like candy on Halloween but the NFL can't throw a riffing the passer on helmet to helmet
Of the four targeting calls in this video, the only one you can make a legitimate case for targeting was the incident in the UT-SC game. All the others were imbecilic calls, especially the Utah-BYU incident.
The Tennessee player lowered his head and initiated contact, it should have been called against him.
The rule specifically says "ANY player..."
