    I think there should be a level 1 targeting and level 2 targeting. Level 1- for when the hit is significant but cannot rule out that it was accidental, 15 yards. Level 2- blatantly obvious the defender targeted the head, possible ejection

    • @beastmode-jd1em
      @beastmode-jd1em 7 лет назад +5

      Jake I agree. Not all of these should be ejectable offenses. In high school rules it's only an ejection if it's flagrant.
      It seems college is calling targeting on every head to head contact and that's not what the nature of the rule was intended for. I do believe the head shot does need to be removed from the game but I think they are going overboard when a player is trying to intercept a pass, the receiver is falling down as he tries to catch the ball they collide and they call him for targeting. Show me the intent on that!

      here in Oklahoma we have a new rule as well making blindside blocks illegal unless you initiate it with you hands or without force. meaning just screening the guy by just stepping into his path and letting him run into you. No ejection though unless its deemed flagrant.

    Back in the '90s, I was introduced to a professional football player by a mutual friend, a former sportswriter, for the purpose of writing the player's motivational book. (It never got finished, for irrelevant reasons.) Thirty years later, the guy who introduced us--the former sportswriter--called the player just to say high and catch up on a couple of things. The player remembered me, but he did not remember the guy who introduced us. He apologized to the sportswriter and asked him not to be offended. The football player was in the NFL's concussion study. There were by then, apparently, a number of people missing from his life because of concussions. Since that incident, I have looked into the matter some. It's devastating to talk to a retired or former player whom I used to watch on TV performing magic in the game, burst into tears or be confused because he couldn't remember something he was trying to comment on or tell about. The most extreme case was a man who drooled and stared at me for the few minutes of conversation we had; I left because it was demoralizing to remember who he once was. I think you guys, especially if you've never played the game, need to re-evaluate the beasts you are becoming simply because you want to see people maimed or severely mentally injured, merely for your entertainment.

    They should just get rid of the rule of targeting. If it's one of those obvious Ravens vs. Steelers types of helmet hits then just deem it as a personal foul with a possible ejection like it used to be. Targeting has just created a soft culture that lets refs throw around even more flags. I'm sorry but grazing past a guys facemask unintentionally isn't any worse for the brain than a common tackle. Your brain is still going to take some damage in any physical sport you play, most of its immeasurable damage. What obviously should be eliminated is what I said previously. Those old time Ed Reed, Troy Polamalu come across the middle hits, where the player's decal falls off. Those hits usually cause the most severe concussions and result in CTE.

    Football was a beautiful game. There was a very rare kind of beauty in the violence of the game that modern people rarely get to see. Men doing what they have been doing since the beginning of time: Going to war with their brothers and finding out what they're made of. It's only after you've given 100% of your effort,energy,emotion and heart and have absolutely nothing left to give that everything in the world is stripped away and you are truly alone and you can finally discover who you really are. That's what football was all about.
    Most men will live there whole lives without ever really finding out who they are.

    The law is affecting NCAA, and NCAA is affecting college football with these rules. It’s not NCAA’s fault. NCAA could be sued left and right until bankruptcy-making college football impossible-so long as the law exists.
    I think the individual football program should be the one responsible for paying a lawsuit, not the NCAA. NCAA can only enforce rules. It is up to the coaching staff on educating/disciplining their players on how to play.
    With individual programs being held responsible on how violently the game is played, NCAA can allow for big hits to happen while the football programs get punished for medical-related consequences.

    College football is starting to become softer in every way imaginable. Not only do you have the rule changes you also have entire teams, not just offenses anymore, that are completely built around finesse and tempo. Coaches like Chip Kelly, Kevin Sumlin and Hugh Freeze are starting to make college football something that any real fan doesn't want to see, a game of tempo and passing the ball as much as you possibly can. Defense, in general at least, sucks now. It used to just be the Big 12 and Pac 12 but now its everywhere. We need football to go back to a more physical nature both offensively and defensively. This can only happen by rule changes and schematic changes on the part of the coaches.

One of the huge different between football to any other sport such as basketball or soccer is that football is going to hit and crash over somebody.
    As a old school football fans, it is just unacceptable to see when a defender does everything right and try the best to help the team and then get kick out of the game because of the god damn targeting call. Everyone on the football field run at full speed and lunge themselves in full speed. However, I think they should be charged with the foul and if they repeat the act then they should be ejected. I don’t agree with ejecting a player for their ‘first offense.’ I do believe this rule is imperative though with all the studies done on concussions and the long and short term effects they have on the players. It is paramount to their safety on and off the field.

    I think the NBA has it right or at least the closet to being right. Their version of this is the flagrant foul, a Flagrant 1 is foul that occurs with excessive force and a player may or may not be focusing on the ball(but most often is going for the ball). The victims team earns 2 free throws and possession of the ball. And a flagrant 1 is like a technical foul, you can have 1, and maybe get a fine later, and the second infraction is automatic ejection, possible suspension(severity of infractions), and a fine. A flagrant 2 is catorgized as a non-basketball play, where a player forcefully attempts to hurt another player. And like I said before automatic ejection upon review. I feel college football can adopt this, because some hits are aggressive and seem unnecessary but I have played football for years, and the speed of the game is scary. Looking back, you don't think when you play, you really don't. It's all instinct and muscle memory, not to mention the atmosphere of the game and pure adrenaline pumping through your veins. It's so fast that I can understand when a player puts his head down or hits a player so hard without thinking about his safety. The NCAA needs to tweak this rule to make it fair for the players and their teams and institute an offensive foul to counter it. I see so many illegal chop blocks, block in the backs, and something they should probably reconsider is the removal or penalty of a severe crack back block. Like when a player is running with or chasing the ball carrier and an offensive player blocks him/smashes into him while he is focused on the ball carrier. Those hits are so aggressive and sudden, it happened to me once in practice(granite I was in 8th grade) and it completely took my breath away and I swear I was flying for at least 30 seconds(in reality it was like less than a second). They suprise you and are probably one of the most dangerous hits in football. Just a suggestion to even out the ruling of defensive hits to keep the integrity of the game. However I do like to seeing the NCAA doing something to keep its players safe, they're plenty of other ways for players to hit each other legally and still be jaw dropping. Either way it goes, I love football and I know eventually they will re-evaluate that rule or strictness of said rule.

Clearly should have been thrown out of the game. The minn one hurts to watch because of when they decided to throw the flag. If a ref really thought it was they should have immediately thrown it then they can discuss if they want to pick up the flag or make that call. It almost as if they didn’t have a choice. Doesn’t the replay official have the ability to call for a review on that even if it isn’t called?

    Theres also the targetting call on Michigan against Michigan State, where the MSU player shoved the Michigan player ontop of the MSU quarterback, with no head to head contact at all, yet the Targetting call Stands. If players can shove the other team into their defenseless players, why do more teams not block the other teams into their own punters/kickers to draw the flag? Oh, because then it wouldnt be a penalty? NCAA needs to rewrite the rules.

      the big problem in my book is they don't call this rule fairly for both sides of the ball. if the runner lowers his head and leads with it into the defenders head, thats targeting as well. It shouldn't be limited to the offense. The offense can be guilty of it too if they lead with it, they just aren't calling it.

    I only played high school football and that was nearly fifty years ago. We were taught to lead with our heads, but at that time the players were far smaller (our biggest player weighed in at 235lbs) and we weren't nearly as fast as modern players. Given that difference and the evidence of head trauma I understand the rule, however there isn't a football player out there who doesn't understand injuries are part of the game and so is laying a whack on a guy who is trying to beat you.

    To be fair, the rule is not ruining the game. It's the implementation and judgement by the refs that is ruining the game. The rule when enforced correctly actually makes a ton of sense and SHOULD be in the game. The refs are just god awful at implementing it.

  • @slpkntmggt06

    Targeting, in the NCAA, is not ruining the game. It's keeping players safe. You want the game to be "more entertaining?" Watch the NFL. It's branded as entertainment. NCAA football is NOT entertainment by definition. These are STUDENT athletes playing out there, emphasis on STUDENT. Their safety comes first. If you want player safety to be second, watch the NFL where the players are dedicated athletes.
    That being said, yes they do need to clarify the rule quite a bit. Many of the clips shown here were NOT targeting. And as to why the Bama-A&M clip wasn't... well, It's Bama. What else could you possibly expect from the media darlings?

    @seth_albright8791 6 лет назад

    The way I see it is that they are attempting to protect the offensive players by not letting defenders make a big hit. I also think that they need to be more accurate and specific with the rule, you can’t just say not head to head contact because linemen would be called all the time. I would put the rule as, If the defender intentionally aims to hit with the helmet or aim for the opponents helmet with a significant amount of force they should call it and they could rate the severity of the play from there. That’s just my two cents

  • @BioEngineer16
    @BioEngineer16 7 лет назад

    What I don't understand is lowering the head. Take the Purdue/Minnesota clip, if he doesn't lower his head, he risks a neck injury. Yes he lowered his head, but he didn't lead with it. If it keeps going, players are just going to have to keep their head up and run into a ball carrier like they're running into a wall. Until they start throwing flags on running backs leading with their head (not as common in today's game, but it still happens), I will keep questioning most of the targeting fouls.

    I think the targeting rule is a good rule, it's not about making the sport "soft" or anything like that. What needs to happen is these refs need to be better trained on what targeting exactly is. They made a step in the right direction by reviewing every potential targeting play, but they still need to better identify it. CTE and other physical problems that arise from constant high impact is a real issue.
