Tents are (or certainly should be) a very personal choice. At 70, just over 6ft and about 17 stone, I use a Terra Nova Pioneer 2, with the new 'Compact' poles, which is really a 1.5 person tent. It suits me perfectly as I have plenty of space for a long/wide pad and bag, can sit up inside and get dressed or kneel to pee in the night and can still get all my bits and pieces in if I need to when the weather is bad (though I usually leave the sac in the vestibule).

I went from a Wild Country Zepheros compact 1 to a Terra Nova Pioneer compact 2. Weighs 350g more and has the same pack size. Only used the Pioneer once but it's like a palace compared to the Zepheros. I can also sit up in the Pioneer. Will still use both depending on the situation.

I have my tents sorted now 👌 . Vern 1 for bad weather and winter , durston xmid 1 for long multiday treks in decent weather . Loads of room and I can sit up in them :-) . The lighter the tent you have as well means you can take more beer with you on longer treks 😂

I solo hike with a 3 person tent. Just back from a solo hike on Kungsleden in Sweden. I used my Fjällräven Arbisko Lite 3 and with all the rain I was really happy with having a lot of space in my shelter. Its trail weight is just under/around 2 kg and it’s very comfortable and spacious on solo adventures and still great and roomy on two person trips. They call it a three person tent, but arrr that would be very cramped.
Having a great tent for two was my first priority, even if it meant that I’m carrying a 2 kg tent on my solo adventures. But I’m starting to look into 1 person tents for the next season.
The Arbisko Lite 3 has been a perfect and very versatile tent as a starting point. With this one tent I have been on so many different types of adventures (backpacking, SUP touring, multi day adventure runs, …) and in a huge variety of weather conditions and landscapes. (I have both the mesh inner and the normal inner tent.)
Now I’m ready to build a collection of more specialized tents.

I got the Helm 1 specifically for winter camps, but found that there just wasn't enough room inside, considering the amount of time you have to spend in there in the winter, plus packing my gear away when inside was so much more difficult.

I used to love 'proper' tents like the Vango Force 10 but they were heavy and no way you'd enjoying backpacking with them. I don't often take my tent in a backpack because my son comes with me and he's not quite old enough for wild camping and complains if we have to walk more than 10 miles, especially if it's uphill (downhill mountain bikers don't do uphill much apparently. He doesn't know he's born from a 55 year old who had to ride up the hill to hammer down it)

Always a 2 man tent. Extra room to get the gear in and in wild weather I like to know it's in with me and not sneaking out under the fly and getting soaked or blown away! The exception is the Durston. I've just bought the Xmid2 and really wish I'd gone for the 1 man, their offset inner shape gives a lot of inside storage and the twin vestibules mean the 1 man would be fine. Plus the 2-man footprint is massive! I also always go for solid inners (black if available!) - better heat retention in winter, fewer draughts and it keeps more light out in summer. I'm even considering trying to dye my Durston inner black...

And on the rare occasion the mrs wants to come, we still have a little bit of extra room so she's not claustrophobic and end up never doing it again

Paul, nice video, its a dilemma I'm now facing, as I've got older, fatter and less flexible, the moving around inside a one man tent is difficult now, that bit of extra room from a two man tent seems a good solution, what i could really do with is a large 1 man tent (call it a 1.5 man tent (perhaps an idea for a future video, review of 1 man tents that are suitable for us larger, older, less flexible people).

I believe that absolutely everyone who likes to camp has had this dilemma! 😂 But I must say that thanks to videos like yours it’s a lot easier to choose the right one for you! I mainly camp off of a motorcycle now, so I don’t have to worry too much about weights etc, but I do need extra room to store motorbike gear, boots and helmet. I use a Berghaus Cairngorm 2 tent because it’s got a massive vestibule which leaves me plenty of room inside for a large sleeping pad (Flextail R05 also thanks to you) and all my other bits! It’s all down to the user’s personal requirements! Another great video, thank you! 👌

I recently bought a Wechsel Exogen 2 person, 3 season tent, mainly for cycle touring and some summer mountain trips here and broad. It pitches inner or outer first, and weighs 1,9kg. If I decide to get back into winter trips I'll get something a bit stronger for the security of it. I'm into my 60's now and can't be bothered squirming around in a small, low space. I like the room. Also like to vestibules, one for the gear and on to cook/sort out in.

I've got a Zephyros Compact 1, which has enough space inside and a reasonable vestibule, and an Alpkit Jaran 2. The Zephyros is lighter and smaller, and warmer, the Jaran is luxurious in comparison - but cooler. Just as others have said! I also think I sleep better in the Jaran, maybe a touch of claustrophobia with the Zephyros? But I like them both. Deciding which to take also depends on which bike I'm using as I'm a cycle tourer rather than a walker, and where I'm going - hilliness!

  • @GeekfromYorkshire
    @GeekfromYorkshire Месяц назад

The 2 vs 1 man tent is related to the dual-wall vs single-wall decision. Dual-wall gives you less of an inner space, single-wall has more risk of condensation getting to your most precious dry kit.
I've just about got myself to stick to a 2-tent setup, one for summer drier warmer, one for everything else. A single-wall Tarptent Protrail for good warm dry weather and dual-wall Tarptent Notch solid inner for all other conditions.
They weigh very similar but the single-wall has one larger inner space, the dual-wall has inner/outer space segregated.
In summer the biggest issue is insects and being too-warm so a single wall larger space is respite when stationary.
If you did find yourself holed up for a long time in a 1-man dual-wall due to wind/rain, so no flying insects, you can always unclip the inner and sit on it to get all the extra space of just the outer. Most 1-man dual-wall tents with detachable inner are palaces with the inner unclipped.
Yes you can get mesh inners but you'd be using them in hot weather and it's still cooler to go single-wall than mesh dual-wall for those situations, so 2 tents is better than 1 tent with 2 inners.
Now if only I could get my stove count down to only 2....

And for me the helm 1 would be better if it didn't have the zip storage area, internal space would make more sense but the vestibule is decent and like I say just enough for me.And a black mesh inner for me would be what I want without the zip storage are though but still have the zip for ventilation,.

I think there's probably a market for 1+ size tents. I have been using a vango zenith 200 for 9 years this year and ive been hesitant to replace it because its the perfect size. It's a small footprint but has enough room for a wide mat and my gear inside with me kept safe and dry. You'd have to be mad to try and sleep two in it however. 1 man tents are much too small for me and a lot of 2 man tents are too big.
I might pull the plug on a F10 Helium UL2 as it's essentially the same tent as my zenith, just quite a bit lighter. I like the look of the Xmid 2 but its massive! I'd never be able to pitch it in some of my favourite spots it being as wide and square as it is. a 1+ size Xmid would be great.

Doesn’t look like you can get a 2nd trekking pole at the back of the Panacea 1?
No easy way to get access at the rear to get the pole in, and the inner extends into the space where the pole would sit on the floor.

Two person tents are better than tents described as for one-person. I do have issues with the manufacturers descriptions - few two-person tents can fit two people comfortably!

A three-person tent is for two people, a two-person tent is for one person and a one-person tent is like casket. Just how I feel. My Duplex weighs next to nothing and for one person and my dog it works great.

Actually I like a 3 man tent. There's lots of leg room and your kit bag also.I can fit a 3 man tent into a very small space.
Lots of room to change your clothes inside 3 man tent. You can get a chair inside also !

Two man for wildcamping, four man for campsite camping! I'm a bit taller and wider than you, I'd find a one man too cramped and I like having my gear inside the tent. Helm 2 is the right size for me.

look at it this way...a three man tent will accommodate 1 person or 2 or even 3 so will work in more situations whereas 1 man tent is only good in one situation right? I have 3 man tent it will accommodate another person easily and has plenty of space for gear/boots etc.

Bought Helm 1 just before West Highland Way. By the first night I knew that I am selling it once I will be back and buying Helm 2.
In rainy windy nights all you gear will get wet and you don’t have an option/space to keep it inside, useless.
Try to move you dirty 65l backpack through sleeping compartment to the side storage compartment, what a nightmare.
Ok it’s a great tent, quick to set up etc, but maybe for one night camps.

ruclips.net/video/w-y0G60YEkA/видео.html I briefly show it in this video. it's pretty straightforward and there's much more space to get changed whilst keeping the inner dry.
