I would have never thought in a million years that a site would be dedicated to a political duel, especially in SF! Thanks for bringing it to our attention Jeff. Another history lesson on a beautiful Sunday morning. See you next Sunday!
I’m glad you enjoyed it! I learn something new on every trip! But to be honest and to clarify, the reason they picked the spot was because it was outside of San Francisco and keep in mind that California hadn’t been a state very long when this happened.
Personally, I don't think we have progresed very far. It seems like the last several elections have been such a "bully first". I want to know what they stand for and what they have to do for us and our great country
Amazing that this piece of history is still standing and hasn't been vandalized.....thank you Jeff for another History Lesson..looking foward to the next lesson...
Don’t know if things are more civil since you can destroy a person’s family, career, and future by using cancel culture and lawfare. Mainstream media and social media are the new weapons of choice and can be just as deadly in my opinion. Especially in politics. Thanks for the video Jeff.
Thx Jeff I had heard of the park from friends that lived in the area but never drove across the Bay to see it. Actually they had told me it was just a green space with a marker which is probably why I never ventured over. Another great installment!
Happy New Year History Hunters! Thank you so much for the wonderful videos! I know that everyone who watches realize how much work you put into each and everyone! You rock!
Very good video, Jeff. Clearly politics are more civil than in the antebellum era, but your video generally confirms that there's "nothing new under the sun.". Cheers
Great video Jeff. Seems like people back in those days had a hard time in controlling their emotions as well as their tempers. History is an amazing subject.
I was a teenager back in the mid 1970's and worked as a caddy at the golf course you mentioned. The ravine where the duel site sits is well below and behind the 7th tee, a par 3, at the exclusive San Francisco Golf Club.
I did not know that so thank you for the information. I know that there are a number of mountain tops named after famous folks from that era, including Thomas Starr King.
Really enjoy the directions you’ve taken recently. This story I’d never heard of before and I grew up just a few miles from there. Very interesting. I now live near Placerville and have enjoyed all the stories about the gold country you’ve done. Very good stuff. Thank you
Another great history lesson on something i never heard about! Thanks again Jeff for your dedication to sharing history! Political history hasn't changed much in the way people act towards one another imo.
Yeah, I was in San Francisco on Thursday and dropping my son off at the airport so I thought I would swing by and do a couple of video sites. Were you one of those who mentioned this place to me?
I wasn't too familiar with this part of our history. Thank you very much for bringing it to our attention, Jeff. What a way to settle a disagreement! 🪦😑😔
Great video, but I believe the "last" duel in California, actually took place between Daniel Showalter and Charles Piercy in 1861 at the estate of Charles Fairfax, in Marin County.
Who would have guessed that there would be a pistol duel located there in that little area. Probably back then the whole place was flat there were no trees either and not many people maybe. Another interesting history lesson that you're taking us through Jeff. Thank you so very much I appreciate it on every Sunday that you put in the hard work.
I did see the marker in Savanah Georgia where the last duel happened in 1877. Two lawyers who paced off, turned around and fired...TWICE!! Each time, nobody was hit, and they agreed to stop..lol There were two witnesses. Very interesting, great vid.
Such an interesting video. I have never heard of this before. Professional men in a duel. Seems odd even back then. Thanks for this one. As always, good content and as I have said before you have the perfect voice for a commentator/host.
Great episode sir. Hopefully the site stays but inevitably will disappear. Always surprises me that direct family doesn’t take care of such sites. Thank u for taking us and I pray you and your family had a great Christmas and have a Happy New Year. 🎊🎈🎆
Hello Jeff, Thanks for sharing this interesting story and site. What away to go over something stupid. Have a wonderful Sunday, I want to wish you and Sarah a Happy New Year🥂🍾
Very interesting! I've heard of this duel but didn't know where it happened let alone that it is still marked in it's own park! Political rhetoric has always been nasty but now some of it seems to be getting potentially dangerous to peoples lives. Great video as usual! Thanks!!
Hi Jeff I do remember your video on Senator Terry, but I don't remember you mentioning The Duel that he had but him getting shot dead for trying to kill somebody. Great historical video thank you so much for sharing. I'm glad at least that they are not trying to kill each other with dueling.
Another great one. Thanx. David Terry was not a decent man. You all have a Blessed New Year 🙏 ✨️ Remember take the old year out the back door and bring the New Year in the front door at midnight 🎉
Cool story Jeff, love it. Well, done and the noise in the background was of no consequence. I did not know about this event so thanks. Politics is nasty and I avoid talking to others about that and will not advertise my beliefs to avoid conflict.
Uff da Jeff, you always bring us amazing stories. And your opinions always seem to mirror my own.---Development around historical sites often holds no sentimentality towards those sites...old is just old. In my town, the ruins of the first mission, destroyed by a massive earthquake and forcing the priests to relocate farther out of town, have slowiy been incorporated into the towns development. Not much left to see, but with markers letting visitors know what to look for. Imagine, one house incorporated their back fence in a ruined wall of the mission. It's now covered in ivy.
That was very interesting. Was the town in West Sacramento named Broderick after David Broderick? Happy New Year and can not wait to see what you have in 2025.
When you drive though the gate going into fort mason in san Francisco, the bay st gate, stay on your right for 3 hundred feet and you're see a monument about a gun dual between two politicians around 1858

Right
I live in Daly City all my life and I did know this happened. Thank you!

That is how you settled things in those days
Yes another fine Sunday edition of History Hunters w/Jeff & Sarah. Thanks guys, always learn so much on Sunday's History lesson.😊😊😊

@@jbenziggyI subscribe to many channels but I never ever miss yours.

Excellent story. Thank you
I am a history buff and enjoy your posts where I say to myself "I did not know that" . Thank you for your wonderful posts.
Wonderful! Thank you!
NOW A DAYS IN POLITICS, THE OPPOSITION WILL "MURDER" YOU IN DIFFERENT WAYS!!!
Never mind the history classes, students just need to watch your videos to learn. Great video.
Season greetings thank you so much for all the content, this past year. .
Our pleasure! Hopefully the year 2025 will be a wonderful year for all of us.
Great story I'm going to have to watch about Terry now. Happy New Year Jeff and Sarah 🎉🎉🎉
Thx Jeff

This is a good episode on some forgotten or unknown history. I’ve read about this duel, but hadn’t seen a video on the location.

Those old fashion duels of flipping a coin to see who goes first seem brutal.I can’t imagine standing there and letting someone take their shot.
"Heads i win......... tails you lose" & quickly flip the coin🤫

i never realized they stood so close to each other during duels
I've heard of the duel before, although, I had thought dueling was a practiced banned before then, at least in England. I'll have to look that up.

David Terry is one of the biggest jerks in California history. He was a scoundrel and a despicable human being in my opinion.
Politic chaos , I don't think they'll ever change...Thanks for sharing Jeff
As long as people want their own will, conflict will happen. It's the human condition!
Never knew that place existed. Imagine explaining to a child what happened there.
I was there and tried to stop it, to no avail. I have the whole thing on video, Jeff Just kidding, another fantastic job.

Truly! We still have idiots with guns there out on the streets and that is scarier!
Duels are always so shocking, but taking a shot at a defenseless man in cold blood is barbaric. Can't imagine.

I have heard parts of this story, I think on your channel. There's nothing like standing on the ground where history was made.
It definitely makes history seem more real intangible when you can stand in the spot where history was made. The spot is no different.
In New Orleans, near the Museum in City Park, you'll find the old "Dueling Oak" with a single grave. "I'll bury you where you stand" He did.
Never heard of this duel. Totally interesting. More civil, no.

Sad story. It just goes to show you that when bad people are in any form of power only bad things come from it.
