Vlad was a man of his time. he knew how things went in Wallachia - his own father and brother were murdered by Boyars. his captivity with the Ottomans etc he needed to be terrifying to survive this era. he kept his country free from the Ottomans. and thats what mattered. you wouldn't want to upset him.. making everyone afraid of him and thinking he was insane sort of worked.. mostly.

I have always wondered about "Vlad The Impaler" and when I looked into him I found out that he is a hero to people in Romania and that he essentially saved Europe from a Islamic invasion. He did what he had to do to scare away an invading empire. Its much like Leonidas and the 300 yet instead of being seen as a "hero" Vlad is seen as a Vampire. Strange how this turn of events happened because of Bram Stoker. Vlad was horrible, vicious and terrible for sure. But Im not sure what any other kingdom in those days facing those invading numbers would have done to avoid being conquered.

    • @aspieanarchist5439
      @aspieanarchist5439 11 месяцев назад +4

Actually, even before Bram Stoker`s novel his political enemies the Turks, Saxons and Boyars made busts and urban legends depicting him as a vampire.(Conveniently for them, that was the era the first printing press was made so convenient access to contemporary wartime propaganda swept through Europe and Asia and since this was the era of the Black Death and separation of Church and State weren`t things yet, very few outside of Vlad`s inner circle who were loyal to him out of fear as much as anything else because to Vlad, treason was the greatest sin one could commit which is ironic considering the Turks regarded him as a traitor to which Vlad would have basically said "Bitch, I was never really on your side to begin with! ")

Vlad may been a merciless somewhat mad leader who took things a bit too far but he is considered a true hero in Romania. When the vicious Turks witnessed the level of his conviction to fight his enemies and punish them their armies became reluctant to fight and Vlad and his armies are a big reason the Ottoman Turks didn't ravage all of Europe. It's rumored his evil deeds have been greatly exaggerated over the centuries.

Just like his time in Ottoman Empire exaggrated; a propaganda war particularly from Chtistian historians of that time. You should research Scander Beg of Albania, or John Hunyadi, if you are looking for a "hero" that defeated Ottomans. You'll know the difference of quality. And no, Vlad is a minor problem that postponed from Ottomans to invade some parts of Europe. In the end, his head was delivered to Mehmed the Conqueror.

Vlad is still considered a hero in parts of Romania because he drove out the Ottomans.
He learned a lot of his cruelest methods, including impaling, while a hostage of the Sultan. His room had a view of the area where the Ottomans performed executions of traitors and enemy captives. I think he saw it was effective on their enemies so he adopted their methods.
It’s hard to relate because modern warfare is supposedly more effective. We looking at a time that wasn’t to far removed from Genghis Khan stacking the bodies of slain enemies to use as protection.
Romans called the Huns barbaric because they ate sitting at tables instead of reclining on divans.
We probably wouldn’t know as much as we do because an Irish author heard some tantalizing dark Carpathian folktales from a Hungarian writer Armin Vambery. These stories served as the basis for Stoker’s epistolary novel Dracula.
Do we really know if he did all the horrors of which he was accused? Is what we have written by his own people or his enemies?
There are people now who dispute what has been believed for centuries about Richard III and even Gaius Caesar.

The great use of the printing press to start the earliest versions of propaganda. The forest of impaled Turks also included people with the plague. The emissaries with their turbans nailed to their heads were Turks. Vlad wished to make their faith stronger. We would say many world leaders since the beginning of time were evil. Each had their strength and weaknesses when it came to populations and prisoners. This is why history is so fascinating to me. Great video as usual. Thanks.

Vlad did exactly what he had to do to protect his land and people... he became the legend and nightmare that shook men's souls and intimidated other rulers and leaders. One could easily argue has he been less brutal it would've cost him. Many refused to fight him and most of the one's that did were terrified while attempting it. That's how you rule with evil men in this world... no mercy, no quarter, and an effective brutality rarely matched in history.

@@azuraroycroft2419 There are so many! Human history has really beautiful moments. When looking at Europe and the Meditteranean area a lot of really harmful systems developed there and created that imperialist ideology of constant fighting to control other people and taking advantage of them, and today's dominant culture being European and of that mentality those parts are highly visible, especially if you focus on the ruling class who have that mentality of controlling others. If you read peoples' histories you'll find incredibly inspiring stories of solidarity and justice. Peter Linebaugh, Marcus Rediker, Robin DG Kelley, Howard Zinn, and a lot of others write excellent accounts of "history from below" focusing on the life of the oppressed majority of people and the incredible worlds they organized together to build. When you look at the majority of people, history is full of wonderful moments. Just not found among people who are part of systems of oppression.
Similarly, in the "American" continents pre-Columbus, a lot of societies were much healthier overall, because they were more participatory and democratic with a completely different worldview. Their actual political systems were incredibly participatory, egalitarian, and encouraged generosity and incredible respect for life. Socially they were a lot healthier, based on community ties, interconnectedness of all things, humility before the natural world, and therefore respect for life which led to individual freedom being one of the most important values. But similar societies can be found everywhere, it's just that they are harder to locate considering they don't usually leave large monuments to themselves like ancient empires. I'd recommend reading The Dawn of Everthing by David Graeber and David Wengrow, or Columbus and other Cannibals by Jack Forbes for a look at the different types of worlds and worldviews that developed all over the place.

Vlad The Impaler was the greatest face of evil, of course. Because Vlad The Impaler is the Dracula with his power after he died in 1877, I think? Vlad was a man of the time to live return in the world and he can't die because Vlad The Impaler became an evil King of Dracula. He was the man just one powerful...!

I don’t think fair to write him off as evil. He was a complicated guy. A hard, traumatic life and the constant threat of invasion must have contributed to his madness. And probably a genetic disposition to ASPD.

Look up what the ottomans were doing to his people and everyone they come across. I even think this channel has a video about it. Enslavement, castrations, grape and genocide just to name some things.

You ask me, why he did what he did. I’d say he was a sadomasochistic, narcissistic psychopath. I ask you why he did it. Cause he evil! No, he’s not a villain from Austin Powers movie.
Believe it or not, some of the things he did in his warped mind were to protect Wallachia & Christianity from the Turks.
