The Ridiculous History of Macaroni Fashion

  • Plenty of time periods evoke groans of regret when it comes to fashion, from the bullet bras of the 1950s to the Hammer pants of the 1990s. However, the towering wigs and frilly outfits of the Macaroni style of the 1760s and 1770s led to so many "what were they thinking" moments, entire industries developed to make fun of its followers. More than 200 years later, Macaronis are still the butt of fashion jokes. While the fashion term "Macaroni" may not be instantly recognizable, you've probably heard it if you've ever sung "Yankee Doodle." Although it would seem the rhyme is referring to pasta, the Yankee Doodle Macaroni in the song actually referred to this strange trend.

I would say provide jobs, the can feed themselves with the pay. Giving people stuff for nothing, only makes them greedy and unappreciative later.

@@Flascoexp The research doesn't seem to support that. In Finland they tried a universal basic income. It showed that it had no discernable difference in people getting jobs. The surprising difference was that people were more optimistic, they had less stress & fewer health problems.
Lazy people are going to lazy & productive people are going to produce. Giving people enough to survive isn't going to stop the overwhelming majority from working because most people are going to want to better their lives no matter where they start out from. It just makes people happier.
I always wonder about the people who would rather have someone starve to death in the streets or die from something easily preventable only because they hate the idea of someone getting something they had to pay for when they got it. To me, if someone can't afford food, housing or medicine, I want them to have it, not only because I believe that human life is valuable but because it's actually a more fiscally sound decision. Preventative healthcare is cheaper than acute healthcare. Housing the homeless is cheaper than dealing with all the problems created by homelessness. Providing people with a healthy diet is cheaper than paying for the healthcare required for people who can't afford to purchase healthy food. The only thing that stops us from implementing the more fiscally sound policy is the people who cry "how dare they get something when I don't." I find that incredibly sad.

@@tazhienunurbusinezz1703 I gave a homeless man my potato chips and he flipped me off after he took them. He was angry that I didn't give him my sandwich too. I probably would've bought him a sandwich had I seen him earlier 5 blocks back... another time a little girl (this was in another country) asked me for food. After we gave her some she wouldn't go away until she took almost our whole roasted chicken... it's just never enough... I have TONS of stories like that. 🙄... You're a good person. One day, the entire world will be filled with humans that care about others and humans who don't take advantage of others' kindness.

Not the rappers who wear gold and shit, but otherwise they have on this front. The business suit evolved out of fairly plain wool frocks and stuff that worked well for practical purposes. They were black, brown or gray to make a point of not making a point: you were here not to show off, but to focus on the subject at hand and plainly do business. Nowadays billionaires often wear T-shirts just like middle class people and wear suits that are fancier, but essentially just a fancier version of the same thing, that a poorish person would wear.

I feel like this overview tended to blend “Macaroni” style with simple “Ton” high fashion. The “Macaroni” in England were usually young men who overexaggerated their worldliness after returning from their Grand Tour of Europe. The style wasn’t just “high fashion”, or “fancy fashion”, but a particular form of fashion among a specific demographic. The use of silk and lace does not automatically make something Macaroni style. Even the other fashionable wealthy looked down upon these ultra trendy, flashy youths of the era. I guess a comparison could be like celebrity Coachella fashion or even Met Gala looks versus what a normal person wears to a music festival or party.
I feel like I’m struggling here, does anyone get what I’m trying to say?

I can’t wait to see the new timeline series begin! I literally think about it multiple times throughout each day hoping that today’s the day for the first 90s timeline video!!
I’m in my mid-30s so I must remember the 90’s the most. By the early 2000s I was too doped up to remember anything, and by the time I eventually grew up… And became an adult… Hell I don’t want to remember any of that. So the 90s were it for me!
I really enjoyed the 80s timeline series as well because a lot of those things shaped me as a child. I always enjoyed a lot of the 80s music and culture while growing up in the 90s.

I don’t see how this is any more ridiculous than wearing Louboutin shoes or having eyebrows shaped like people used to do in the last decade. I’m sure our descendants will look at pictures of decorated gel nails and tight fitting pants and mock us for it as well.
It’s fashion: from trendy to ridiculous to trendy again. Can’t wait to dust off my macaroni wig when TikTok influencers make it popular again!
