The Wemo Smart Dimmer - The First Dimmer Switch with Thread

  • Following on from the company's Thread-enabled smart plug, Wireless Controller, and standard wall switch, Wemo is clearly intent on going 'full steam ahead' with Thread products, of which their new dimmer switch is the latest.
Aside from being Thread-enabled, what's also great about this new switch is that it can work with or without a neutral wire - all in one device - so no need to purchase a specific model for your needs.
The only potential downside is that the company states this will not be upgradeable to Matter when it arrives, so it may well be better to wait for the Matter-compatible model. That said, it could be a while, and also much more expensive. Additionally, if you're all in on the HomeKit side of things, having the Matter version will not make any meaningful difference, at least not for a few years.

Great video. I’m honestly glad to see WEMO get something right. We need a good array of manufacturers who are dedicated to Apple HK but their failings in almost everything else left me trepidatious to try anything else.
Also, kudos to calling out Shane for his help. I’m a big fan of the HK RUclips community working together to help us all out.

I only previously had the original Wemo smart wifi plug (didn't even come with a HomeKit code), but it wasn't great admittedly. This new generation of Thread Wemo devices has been rock solid for me so far - Scene controller, Smart plug, and now the dimmer. Can't fault them.
I know I can ask Shane if I have a question, and vice versa, which is great for all of us ultimately.

Evan thou it doesn't reference it, is it usable with home assistant or just ZigBee? Thank you.

It doesn’t use Zigbee, it uses Thread. Not sure if there’s a HA plug-in, as I don’t use HA, sorry.

I’m confused about Matter. I thought thread itself would automatically make a device Matter compatible.

Hi, unfortunately it seems that the initial goal was that Thread devices would indeed be Matter compatible, due to Thread being the wireless connection of choice for Matter, but from what I’ve read, requirements for Matter compatibility have increased to the point that some devices that have been made using Thread, don’t have the processing resources to make them Matter compatible. This first came up when Nanoleaf admitted that their Essentials bulb and strip wouldn’t be capable of Matter compliance. I guess some of these manufacturers built their devices based on the original requirements and got so far along with the product that they couldn’t alter the their devices to match the newer requirements.
