Tip for practicing: If you do not live alone and your family is going crazy while you learn strumming, use your fret hand to mute the strings by placing your fingers ever so lightly across them, and then strum. :) Once you feel like you have the strum down better then you can play full on (and impress 'em)!
I’ve had my ukulele now for 13 days. And say first my fingertips really hurt and were sensitive but after 30 minutes of practice everyday I have callouses and I don’t feel pain anymore. So I really thank you for this whole series because it’s motivated me to practice and not lose motivation so fast.
Hi Lena! 👋🏼 Welcome to this community! You are doing so well 👏🏼 callouses really help speed up the learning process. Can’t wait to hear from you once you finish the challenge! ❤️

This is the first of your 30 Day Challenge videos that I found confusing. If you could add playing through the whole song with the strumming pattern, it would really be helpful - I notice that several people have asked for this. I'm reading along with the printed material but I'm having trouble with the single 'd' strums at the end of each bar. I wrote the words under the notes, which helped somewhat. I think that it's hard for beginners to understand why one strum sometimes counts as one note, and other times the DU is one note, but two strums. I think it's the timing and the beats, but it throws me off beat when this happens. I love these videos overall and they're amazingly helpful. Thank you!
Hey, I gotta say this course on the ukulele is by far the BEST available on RUclips ! Also my progress is really good thanks to you ! Your Notes also helps a great deal and finally great work dude !
Totally newbie, only a month into learning and your series came at the perfect time for me. I'm soaking it all up! Thanks for being such an amazing teacher!
The best. I needed this. After 3 months I finally learned Happy Birthday for my grand daughter’s birthday. I was learning cords and strums. I think I can learn this. I have better have great grand children. My children and grandchildren are way past this. In 20s, I think they believe I am becoming sinal for trying to learn something new. I am really enjoying ukulele, Tampa , Fl. My little soft fingers are starting to get hard.
You are so fun and cheerful to spend time with ❤❤❤ such detailed information, knowing exactly where one can get stuck and giving them a little push along with wonderful words❤❤❤ thank you teacher ❤
Thank you so much Bernadette, your 30-day challenge really gives a boost to my learning. I was autodidacting it and I could play some songs, but you are truly helping me get better at it. I am confident that your way of teaching will give me a better understanding of playing the ukelele, so playing will be easier and more fun overall.
Really struggling with the strumming pattern on this one... I wish you had played the whole song with the strumming pattern. Did you record it by any chance??
Also struggling with the strumming pattern. How does uUd work with the beats, is the whole thing uUd one beat? Wheen do we change chord after up strum?or different every beat?
Great lesson! I thought I had the g7 chord down, but nope it flew right out of my head! The strumming pattern is cool, but it will take me awhile to do it right. Thank you!
Hi Linda! 👋🏼 If you pivot the hand towards the head of the ukulele you might have better luck. Also practice switching to G7 without strumming to get your muscle memory to kick in 💪🏼
Have have been trying to learn ukalele for the past 3 month and here is the best tutorial I came across till the date. Since I had a basic idea, I watched and played all the 12 videos on a single batch and reached here on 13th lesson. Gonna learn regularly and join the 30 days challenge from today! 😊
I have Ukelele lessons irl, but you are a much better teacher! One how can play can not always teach well. Thank you very much. Right amounts of repeats and sum ups in the end! And learning all about the instrument too! I really thank you for sharing this with us! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Watching and practicing your videos makes me happy! I genuinely wake up excited to play and it brings joy to my day! Your such a great teacher, and I appreciate your teaching technique and pace that is challenging but not overwhelming!! Thank you from the heart!
Helloooooooo. As this is your song for several lessons, I decided to paint a 🌟 star on my ceiling that is luminous. And every night I listen to you sing me to sleep! it even works when you sing high !! 🎶😉
Yes! This is one of my go-to songs for learning the tabs and chords. Helps build skills :) plus, as an elementary teacher, I’m used to going to songs like this!
Hi Rita :) glad you liked this lesson! So happy you’re feeling motivated! Taking on this challenge is not easy, so it’s good to get encouraged! Keep at it!!!
I got my ukulele 12 days ago and I can't believe I'm capable of doing so much already when I've never played an instrument before and I had always thought it was too much for me, so thank you so much!! these tutorials are fantastic! I'm so happy I ended up finding your channel (thanks to looking for a Twinkle, twinkle tutorial, as I need to sing that song to some children and I'm so bad at singing I thought playing it in the uke might help me :D), this step by step approach is super useful as I can find many tutorials for so many things (not many as good as these, btw!) but I don't know what I'm supposed to learn when so this is helping me a great deal. But today I have to say I'm a bit lost :( I'm not really managing to add the strumming pattern to the song properly. I try reeeeeaaaally slowly, but I confuse myself not knowing when I'm supposed to switch chords... would it be possible for you to do an extra video (once you're back) for dummies like me? Btw, I was also a bit lost with the homework for video 11, as I can do the strumming patterns as isolated (and boring things) but I can't add them to a song :( Thank you! Blanca
Good for you! 2nd & 3rd time thru really make a difference, setting us up to be successful with the 30DayUKECourse... Hang in there... i'm 68 yrs YOUNG -- if i can do this, you can! 🤙😁
EXCELLENT LESSON “Coach”!!!!!! When you had us just observe you go through the song - I think the lesson you were trying to teach us is the “minimal effort” it should take going from chord to chord(?)🤔. Looks more graceful! ***Need to work on doing that! Looove that new strum!!!!! That stronger down stroke gives it more “Pizzazzzz” ........you’re right! Thanks “Coach”😘😘😘
Hi Geralyn! Yes! You are right. I have you guys watch first so you can see the efficiency of the hands moving. I also want you to see the move before you try it just in case you were making a mistake.
Hi, Miss B ~~ Am QUICKLY running through this first half of Challenge on my 4-day old Kohala SOPRANO ukulele because going from a 30" baritone ukulele (DGBE tuning) with capo to an actual 20" soprano (GCEA tuning) is QUITE the physical adjustment for an intermediate beginner...🙃 After having this real inexpensive ukelele for 3 days, i now totally appreciate GOOD quality for good value & your reviews are VERY informative! After 2 months watching your reviews, i ordered the Enya X1 on 5-13-20 ~~ I am sooo excited, Miss B! @ 😎 As you were calling chords, I could see the shapes in my mind's eye... That's progress! 😸
Another winning lesson. The Strum. Such an important subject, an incorrect strum can Really throw the rhythm off on a song. A friend whose primary instrument is cello, sat in with the worship team playing acoustic guitar. She was seated next to me and her strumming pattern completely threw off the rhythm. Almost didn't get a chance to work on today's lesson. I got a package from Okinawa today and was having Too Much Fun playing! Until now I thought the funny vibration pattern of the strings was just a product of the video camera, but WOW!, they really Do jump around! Also there was some Candy I really shouldn't be eating that came with it. Funny, I never thought of Japanese candies as an accessory to a bass. LOL. Thank you So Much Ms. B! Hope you're getting some time to visit in California. Praying for your safe travels. God Bless you, Jose, Kit-Kat, and Arigato.
SeanVplayer ahhh!!! Yay!!! You got the bass!!! And the Japanese treats 😃😃😃 Have fun playing and sharing it!!! Keep updating me on it and let me know what you think of the treats ;)
It is so much fun! I took it to church last night, and played it through my Bose p.a. system. It has a great voice. Being used to my regular basses, I would overreach at first but soon got used to it. The "rubbery" strings were my second hurdle. They don't allow for slides as easily as on my full size bass. A quick shot of Finger Ease took care of that. I will have a better report to give on how the electronics work when I have more time to play with it. Love the built in tuner. I first tuned it up with my Snark tuner, then I realized it had one built in. When I accessed that it showed that it was in tune, ( of course), but it really has a Vivid display. About the candy, they are delicious of course but don't you know I'm Allergic to them? I break out in FAT, (insert rim shot here). Seriously the swelling may never go down. Someday send me an email and let me know about your adventures in your journey to the east coast. Don't be in too much of a hurry getting there, they're gonna have some Rain! Thanks again!
For those around here who are not a great fun of strumming cause you feel like following the rhythm is not really your thing... USE A METRONOME!!! I use an app on my phone that is called Soundcorset and it's great. You can set it to your own rhythm and then keep on building and speed it up! It will help you internalize the beat. It worked really great for me!
An excellent video as always, I'm enjoying this very much! Unfortunately, the strumming pattern here is very difficult, I don't undersand how to do it. Is there perhaps some other video where it's explained in more detail? Thank You :)
Day #13: Yeah!!!!!...I am so happy that this was not done on a Friday!!.....Hey, I am not totally superstitious........I do have a black cat!...:)....Great job on your vid's, again, Bernadette....I really like the way you are doing these....very nice......keep going!!...:)
It's easier for me to count. one and, two and, three and, four and. The number is always for the first stroke (beat): down, down, down down. The AND is always the stroke (halfbeat) in between or upstroke. Here it would be down (and), down up, down (and), down up it's easier for me to keep the beat that way.
Is there anywhere where you play this song WITH the strumming pattern, at least one whole time, so I can practice it with you? And what do you mean by follow you LIVE? I just 'liked' your Facebook page, but don't see live recordings there. And didn't know how to search for Twinkle Little Star with the strumming. Thanks for all you do! (72 year young illustrator, always told that I couldn't carry a tune; I'm gonna learn the ukulele!! Just watch me in 3 months, a year! This is my first week in...) You are such a skilled instructor!
I was struggling with the strum pattern and sining along but the worksheet you created helped me a lot! Also Bernadette, I know I'm late to the party but you're kind of the best. I'm so glad I found you!
Thanks for alerting me to this! I started learning the uke initially so I can sing my lessons to my infant students. Now I just want to play tunes myself!
I’m gonna learn to hate this song but before I do I’ll get it. I just played it through for the first time on ending on the soft down strum. Wohoooo. Creating new brain cells is hard.
UG, I'm having trouble with the strumming, perhaps it;s the timing/counting/beats? at the same time. otherwise, I love this tutorial and challenge, yes it's CHALLENGING!
Hi Bernadette! I came across one of your videos one day and I directly bought a Ukulele and starting practicing! you make it look so fun and easy! I wanted to get a concert Ukulele but I accidentaly bought a 26 inch one, which is a tenor I assume. But its going pretty awesome. Im on day 13 now and I was wondering, when do I start tuning the Ukulele to "U" instead of "C". Also, I have a "Ukulele C" and "Ukulele D" on my tuning device and I'm not sure which one to use. Thank you so much for everything !
Having a problem doing the strum pattern and the song Seems like I’m ahead of the pattern or behind . How do I fix this? Someone doing the challenge help a beginner out. Thanks
The part where i struggle the most--stumming 🙄 There are songs that i wanna play but strumming is a challenge so ill resort to island strumming instead
This tutorial is amazing! I do have a question, when your using the strumming pattern. When its one strum per chord ( like G7/or C/ ) do you do the whole strumming pattern or just go down?
Thanks for the great lesson. I still don't get how to fit a strum with regular beats (DDUD) into a song where chords change sometimes after two, three or even one beat. I'm sure that's coming.......
Hi. I'm from India. Your videos are really helpful. Thank you so much.🙏🏽.. I have a Soprano Ukulele. I find it a little hard to hold it. It often slips away from my hand. Is there anything you can help about it?
I would like to be sure about the 2nd strumming "dDu". Is it, for instance, on C//// : 2 x dDu ? and on F// 1 x dDu ? How to count that pattern: 1&2&3&? Thanks a lot.
I am LOVING these lessons.... (being a retired teacher!).... I have had my ukulele since 1968, a special souvenir from Hawaii, and never learned how to play it from books (Pre-computer!!). I'm having good success from following the lessons, but, cannot find the download printable pdf's.... Please help with that?!
I can't do the strumming patterns with moving my hands between the chords, plus how do you know like if we have to strum 4 times for C and you have a strumming pattern dDu so like how do u strum it
Hey! No. It’s completely normal to struggle with the strumming patterns. Try this quick 5-day challenge. It’s just focused on strumming and it’s here on RUclips ruclips.net/p/PLJFa3EaocfZnj0TPM4TtsOOuAPjeVCBl2
Hi Bernadette, i have a problem. I found that during the switch from chord C to chord G7, chord A (open string) rings when i release chord C. How do i overcome this problem? Am i pressing the chord wrongly?
oh hi Ms. B! I'm having trouble adding a strumming pattern to the song. I mastered single down strums but the one you taught today and D DU UDU I can't seem to do! Any suggestions?
One day is not enough for mee.. I practice two days this going to be 60 days for me😂😂😂 but I like it...
Hey Itachi Uchiwa, how's your progress,3 years later

I think G7 is my favorite chord.. Probably because it took so long to master! Drove my husband nuts having to listen to me practice 😬 Respect to G7🤗
😂😂😂 that’s hilarious!! I’m making my husband do the challenge too so he won’t be too annoyed with me recording all these videos
I use G7 in realy too many songs!
I thought I was a weirdo because I have a favorite sound. It is Cmaj7. So pretty!
You're right. I really have trouble switching from C to G7
Me too!

I gotta admit, that strumming pattern is throwing me off! There's always the urge to do a full strum or make it turn into an island strum
Hi Luisa, I have the same problem!! I can't help doing a full strum, then when I try to correct it, I end up doing an island strum too.
@@davidcarbin3307 Yeah, everytime I start singing and my concentration isn't 100% on the strum it just does its own thing 😅
That means there is something here to challenge you :) I’ll go live soon and review these things with everyone! ❤️

Alexis Leona 😂😂😂 I always have three of you in every classroom
Lol that is me..😂
Never realized only strumming half the strings was an option. This opens up a window for experimentation :D
Great lesson! I thought I had the g7 chord down, but nope it flew right out of my head! The strumming pattern is cool, but it will take me awhile to do it right. Thank you!

Thank you, Bernadette. Really enjoy learning with you. Just took up the ukulele at 68 and loving it!
Woah Mrs.B is flawless
Have have been trying to learn ukalele for the past 3 month and here is the best tutorial I came across till the date.
Since I had a basic idea, I watched and played all the 12 videos on a single batch and reached here on 13th lesson.

Really enjoying the uke challenge. Love the feeling of making progress with the lessons building on each other. I like this strum.
You’re covering all the basics! I was a wondering how you’d get all 30 days in there! Great work!
Thank you so much! I had recorded a bunch of lessons, but not using all of them because I see the challenge going a different way
Watching and practicing your videos makes me happy! I genuinely wake up excited to play and it brings joy to my day! Your such a great teacher, and I appreciate your teaching technique and pace that is challenging but not overwhelming!! Thank you from the heart!

not me actually getting tired in the middle of the day after you played the full song LOL
Great lessons! Thank you so much! What do you call this strumming pattern?
And now you can play the ABC's song, too! 🎵
Yes!!! Ah, totally forgot to mention that 😂
It's also Baa Baa Black Sheep. And check out "Ah, vous dirai-je, maman!"😁
Lauren ahhhh okay!!!! 😃
Τhanks for those ideas, my toddler will be soooooooo excited!!
While strumming down we were strumming to C four times but with 'down Down up' strum how many times do we have to strum.
This is my big problem too....I am not sure how it fits together ....is it down DOWN up 4 times too....or how does it change ?
Love it
UG, I'm having trouble with the strumming, perhaps it;s the timing/counting/beats? at the same time. otherwise, I love this tutorial and challenge, yes it's CHALLENGING!
Yey! New strumming pattern 😁
More coming too!
thanks Ms. B :)
Thanks!
I don't get the strumming. If we have to play C//// do we play dDUd (4 strums) or dDU dDu dDu dDu (4 times 4 strums)?
ughh! that g7 cord tho!
and that strumming! I can´t with this lesson. Send help!
update: i almost got it! yay! :)
Thanks
This is the first video that I found confusing... Please play through the song with the strumming pattern...

I'm sure that's coming.......
i got almost everything right!!!, im struggling with the strumming so bad o_o
Thank you! I am getting better. Any ideas on ukes under 50 bucks?
I am LOVING these lessons.... (being a retired teacher!).... I have had my ukulele since 1968, a special souvenir from Hawaii, and never learned how to play it from books (Pre-computer!!). I'm having good success from following the lessons, but, cannot find the download printable pdf's.... Please help with that?!
I can't do the strumming patterns with moving my hands between the chords, plus how do you know like if we have to strum 4 times for C and you have a strumming pattern dDu so like how do u strum it
I’ve had to play this song so many times but I’ve got it down with a normal strum and I almost have the new strum
Hi! Love these tutorials… I am am having trouble with this trimming pattern… am I the only one out there with this issue?
Hey! No. It’s completely normal to struggle with the strumming patterns. Try this quick 5-day challenge. It’s just focused on strumming and it’s here on RUclips ruclips.net/p/PLJFa3EaocfZnj0TPM4TtsOOuAPjeVCBl2
Thank you! I have learned more from you in the last 10 days than 6 months of drifting from RUclips channels to others.
Just tried option 1 with some shoelaces. It ain't pretty, but it's practical. Thanks!
What chords do you use when you are ending a lesson...I love it!!!!
1st line - 2:06
2nd line - 3:52

Hi Bernadette, i have a problem. I found that during the switch from chord C to chord G7, chord A (open string) rings when i release chord C. How do i overcome this problem? Am i pressing the chord wrongly?
Yay now I can play the alphabet too 😂
loving the lessons but when i try to click the link for printable above my my broadband says it is not safe any hel. thanks?
Whooaaa but how do I count the beats when I do that strumming pattern? how do I know when to change the chords? Just based on my singing?
oh hi Ms. B!
I'm having trouble adding a strumming pattern to the song. I mastered single down strums but the one you taught today and D DU UDU I can't seem to do!
Any suggestions?
