When you first showed us the Island Strum a few videos ago I could not do it at all especially with chord changes at the same time, but hey a few days later and I have gotten so much better at it and I catch myself doing it naturally to most songs I try!!!
All those lessons are so valuable Miss B! I can see myself improving on exercises that were assigned days ago and I keep practicing as warm up, but the strum is hard, after a while I loose the rithm... I truly can't wait for my hand to do it by herself all casually 😂 Thanks for teaching! Lucia
Ah the riptide strum, I didn't quite manage that with the ghost strums when you did the tutorial. Maybe now I'll be able to! Also there's something so pleasing about the island strum ❤️
Hi Rita! 👋🏼 Thank you so much for your gratitude. It means a lot to me and it’s why I keep going here! 😃 the goal was to offer variety so that we wouldn’t get bored or stressed with one thing :)
This one tonight is a real challenge for me. Strumming is my weakness. But hey, eventually I might master it some day ☺ Nevertheless thanks for this lesson Ms. B. 🌹
Day #21: YEAH!!!!!!!....STRUMMING!!!.........good tips on strumming (you are so good with your strumming)...I have said that before.....You make it look effortless and I think that is very good........: )....nice going!....:)
I am having so much fun with your course that I wish you'd do a second 30 day challenge! Thank you for being such an awesome teacher.. so encouraging and easy-to-follow. Enjoyed meeting Kitkat, too. :)
Tami! I am having a lot of fun with it too. You are actually one step ahead of me. I filmed Day 30 and I ask for everyone's suggestions for the next challenge! ❤️
This is the biggest skill I've learned from your channel! Once I learned about fingerstyle from the Hallelujah video, so many creative doors opened up with my songwriting. I have enjoyed exploring this. :) PS - Kitkat is not sorry 😂
Quite the Dramatic opening... LOL. Yes, that last one is going to take some time to get smoothed out and consistent. Thank you for taking us through the next big step, The Strum! Good lesson, see you tomorrow. (I remember when you Debuted that beautifully painted ukulele. It really is a work of art, and I know it will be a treasure of your time in Okinawa.)
Ahahaha yes! I get more comfortable showing my personality with every week I am here on RUclips. I can be a little dramatic and playful when I'm not too stressed out about how things "look" on camera, you know?
Never worry about how you look on camera, you're beautiful. But I could close my eyes and Hear what a beautiful person you are without ever seeing you. Your personality is why so many love you. Look at your numbers grow, 55k and rising! You've gained another thousand in just a few days. Congratulations!
We are on Day 21 now :O Your big brother checking on all of you. Learn these patterns everyone. They are very useful. :D Nice detailed explanations. You even thought about how the index finger acts as a strap. Never would have thought of it like that. Hope everyone is doing their homework..
Wow! So many strumming patterns! I've been trying to switch between them and fingerstyle and see how it goes! Haha, this is funny. I already knew the riptide strum because I played it on the guitar, but it was really difficult. I had to take my time to learn it again on the uke! Great video!
It is such a tricky one~! I watched a few tutorials on it and had to work on it a while before putting out a tutorial too Thank you for being here ❤️love chatting with you
I love the “fake fake!” ♥️🤩♥️🤩♥️🤩♥️🤩♥️ Today, something clicked into place, and I’m able to strum AND sing. Well, at least I think that this is so, and the dog and the cat have not left the room. 😸😸😹😹
Strumming....probably is another nemesis....but with this beautiful piece of education from you...I am confident that i kick it upa notch. Believe it or not, I can strum two of the patterns....with minimal mistakes. Thx B.
Wow!!! Shout out to your friend Wendy - for the Wonderful floral paint job on your Uke😍. How Beautiful!!! EXCELLENT LESSON today “Coach”! Had to watch it first.....Will go back and practice each strum!!! Thanks for the reminder to keep the strumming hand going......I’m not sure what i. do🤔🤔🤔.....i think I DO pause my Rt hand when i change chords. Need to work on my “Dynamics” too😂👀🎸. Thanks “Coach”❤️
The close up on the island strum really help me actually get it. The previous lesson, I couldn't replicate the island strum that you did. But this one is very clear and close up and slow enough. Just great.
Wow, these lessons are great, your amazing!!!! I was trying to learn on my own wish no success, you have changed that tremendously! So one question, I tend to be more comfortable strumming with my thumb and my thumb nail never touches the strings. Should I focus on learning to strum with a different finger or stay with my thumb?
Great Lesson Bernadette Teaches!!!!!!!))) That’s some darn good strumming your doing!!!!!!))) You know after 30 days I think I will try a Sitar if you see a good one let me know would you!!!!!!!!))) Lets be careful out there 🚙)))😊
Today we had a 10-hour trip. KitKat was done with it at hour 9. We are now in a tiny house sleeping for the night before we get up and go again tomorrow morning! Wish us luck :)
Hello~Welcome~Today~We~Strum😎😁💜 Great introduction Ms.B Ah, the pretend to strum, no strum, strumming technique. I understand this tutorial, got it now. thanks Ms.B.

Hi Andrea!! 👋🏼 Yes! I know you’re looking down at your hands!!! Thank you so much for joining the RUclips fam too 🤗🤗 We do have a Patreon family as well and I give my patreons practice videos and special perks too to express my gratitude! www.patreon.com/bernadetteteachesmusic
This lesson is by far the hardest for me! Any advice for someone who doesn't have any rhythm? The chords have been relatively easy, but the strumming is a real challenge for me. Thank you so much for these lessons!
I'm also very surprised how much I managed to learn in such a short time! It's amazing! 😍 However, with this lesson I'm really struggling. I watched this video for the second time today and I'm really struggling while strumming Up. I'm still not sure what is "fake strumming"?🙄
Hi Bernadette! First of all: THANKS A LOT for all your videos! Before I found your channel, I just learned by myself by trying out a lot. Now I feel like I learn the right technique too, so thank you :D I've got a question about the strumming: I always used my thumb instead of the inner of the index finger when I came up again, especially when I was chucking. Is this completely wrong? Please tell me what you think about it! Thanks!
Hi Giulia!!! Welcome to this community 🤗 I’m so happy you’re here! There are many ways to strum and I recommend you learn a few. If the way you were strumming before produces a nice, clear tone, keep using it! :) if you like the strums I teach here too, use them as well. It’s good to build your skills and try different strumming styles out when you’re first starting.
Thanks for the answer! :D Yes, I'm going to try out all different styles so I can pick always the best one for the song I'm playing. I'm looking forward to all of your upcoming videos! :)
Oh wow! Thanks for you work, I'm learning a lot because of you and I'm really grateful 🥰 keep it up, please! I have a doubt: when I strump up, I use "P" nail...is that ok? And another thing: I learned to hold the ukelele with "Playmobil hand" in the left hand and now sometimes I need to hold it with the "I" finger as you say, but is not a "Playmobil hand" in that way. Is that alright? Thank you so much, I hope you answer
Hi Bernadette! Thanks for all of your helpful tips :) I was wondering about two things: 1: is it okay for me to strum with an open hand? As in pointer for down, thumb for up. It just feels way more natural for me. 2: in the "riptide" strum, how important is the fake? It's really stressful for me remembering to fake a up and down. I find myself almost "faking" the fake, as in I kind of lazily pretend I was going to strum, if that makes sense. I make it more of a chore than a tool.
I got the name of a couple of the strum patterns...the ballad and the island. What did you call D DU UD , the D D UDU, the D DU UD , and the D D UDU strums? And where are they mostly used?
When doing the Riptide strum, is it okay to switch chords after the first two down strums? It's easier that way since there's a little break but I'm not sure about the sound.
Speaking of dynamics, any tips on how to master beat emphasis on (DDDDDDDD) mariachi strum? I always seem to get thrown off count when I try this. #fakeukulele
Hi, HELP, I am really having a problem with the riptide strum on the fake strums, I keep stopping when I try and fake the strums then it throws me off. Anything to help me get pass this? Can’t go to the next lesson till I get all the strums. Thanks
My absolute biggest challenge is signing the lyrics while strumming because it's two different rhythms and I cannot for the life of me understand. Any tips would be appreciated!
It‘s so hard for me to focus on a stumming pattern, switching chords and singing at the same time. I always get confused and mix something up 😖 but I‘ll keep trying.
Are there tricks for people who have difficulty keeping the strumming going? It's like I can't move both hands at the same time and I am practicing 45 min a day 7 days a week for 3 months and I still can't strum while switching chords. I either stop or completely jam up.
I keep wanting to use my middle finger as my pointer finger nail always breaks so is short. Is this a bad habit? I do feel like I get a tad tied up doing it this way. Again that could be beginner-itis... Suggestions?
The riptide strum is really tricky. The fake strums in the middle can really throw you off and it takes practice to get the rhythm and everything down. I struggle with the Riptide strum so much more than all the others too!
I’m a beginner ukulele player and I dont know to relax because I put too much effort in it and I put a lot of pressure on one of the strings. Can you please help me
That fake fake exclamation throw me off, Ms B :( Is it really necessary to keep your fake strumming between the D D and UDU? What if i just let my hand not moving between D D and UDU? I have some problem reading the strumming pattern Like the D D UDU, it is just easier for me to digest that as UDU D D because there is some kind of pause between the D D and the UDU, so it seems like a UDU D D, instead of D D UDU in my head idk if that was the wrong way to take it .-., anyone have the same problem?
Am I the only one messing up the strumming if I ever try to change chords, sing or do anything else that the strumming? Even if I change from Am to F or any other extremely easy switch, when I change chords the movement of my left hand affects my right hand :( (a bit like when you learn to drive (manual shift) and when you put 5 gear you move the steering wheel to the side too). I'm not even there for the riptide strum, hehe, but I could manage the island strum at least... :)
I guess it is better to focus on mastering the chord first, if the chord has become a second nature to us, messing around with the strumming would be easier i guess
I do that a ton And Just wondered if anyone else out there has Been also switching the chord C in a down strum or Island strum and Like basically u would switch chords like I'm on c chord And I will Literally just like go like; DDU , and than switch UDU
I find that if I strum using my thumb, I more or less stay in rhythm and time, but when I try the other way, everything just goes wrong. It's like a physical incapability. Oh well, it's a challenge. If it were easy, it wouldn't be half as fun.
@@BernadetteTeachesMusic I have to admit, my hand is more relaxed when I strum with my thumb, everything just comes together easier. There's no tension.
Exactly what I thought I just wait at the bottom and just think of the speed of the song (This is to everyone that see’s especially beginners) Mess around and see what works you don’t have to do exactly the same as someone else she’s says to use index I use thumb which ever is more comfortable
This is a judgement call. Some people like the sound of a pick and others don't. Some people also want to protect the top of their ukulele, which a pick can damage more quickly. It's definitely up to each individual to choose :)
Was there an advertisement from Elizabeth Warren before this video? Everybody gets different ads that are targeted for them. Whenever I watch my videos (to review them), I get ads for allergy medications or skin care. I’m really sorry you had an unpleasant ad. I think RUclips now gives viewers the option to give a thumbs up or down to the ads shown before videos.
I cannot believe just how much I've learned in only 21 days! Thank you so much!
It’s because you’ve been consistent with it and you have continued practicing, even when you didn’t feel like it. Your hard work is paying off 💪🏼
Me, too. And in 4 years? I'm a beginner. 🤔
Oh wow that ukulele is gorgeous!
Yes, my friend Wendy killed it!!! ❤️

Yes Luisa, the island strum seems so natural and makes me feel happy 😊😊
To be honest with you, I had to watch tutorials on that strum before I could master it too. It's a really confusing one to play and add the singing to
Ghost strums got me too at first. I can do it now though.
Is the ghost strum the one where ms B say "fake fake"? Cause that threw me off too
@@fauzafitriyah yes, when she says “fake” it’s a ghost strum...
I am enjoying your lessons soooo much. You make the lessons run nice and smooth. Many thanks!! Gracias

However, with this lesson I'm really struggling. I watched this video for the second time today and I'm really struggling while strumming Up. I'm still not sure what is "fake strumming"?🙄
Thank you! Does paint change the tone of the uke?
it depends on how many layers are added and how it's sealed, from my understanding.
Is there a printout page for Lesson 21? This is great by the way. I'm learning so much!
Hi Mimi!
Yes, it is page 29 of the google doc slideshow :)
Thank you Miss ❤️

Hi Bernadette! First of all: THANKS A LOT for all your videos!

Thanks again still here!

2: in the "riptide" strum, how important is the fake? It's really stressful for me remembering to fake a up and down. I find myself almost "faking" the fake, as in I kind of lazily pretend I was going to strum, if that makes sense. I make it more of a chore than a tool.
i cant strum anything. I dont want to give up but have been trying and cant get anything. I was so excited 😭

That's a really good question. I shall ask a mariachi friend for clarification. I like to emphasize beat 1 to help me keep track of my counting :)

The riptide strum is really tricky. The fake strums in the middle can really throw you off and it takes practice to get the rhythm and everything down. I struggle with the Riptide strum so much more than all the others too!
Thanks Luisa, I thought that it was my advanced years causing the problem!! It helps to know that even you youngsters find this difficult.
@@davidcarbin3307 Yes don't worry! There's always things we struggle with a little more, just keep at it 😊 You're never to old to learn the ukulele 🤙🏼
Awww Luisa, you are so sweet. With Bernadette's tutorials and your support, I know I have all that I need to achieve my goals, thank you!! 😊😊
@@davidcarbin3307 I'm so happy I could help you stay motivated 💕
can I fake a strum when changing chords B ?
I’m a beginner ukulele player and I dont know to relax because I put too much effort in it and I put a lot of pressure on one of the strings. Can you please help me
try pretending your hand is a sleepy feather. Also try taking deep breaths before you strum. Relaxing the hand means that you too should relax ❤️
Thank you so much! It really helped! ❤️❤️
Yay!!! That’s great news!
It's been 3 months, I'm still on 21st day👀😂
Fingerstyle is way easier for me than strumming - but there are way fewer songs played in fingerstyle, at least I find it hard to find the tabs :(
That fake fake exclamation throw me off, Ms B :(
Is it really necessary to keep your fake strumming between the D D and UDU? What if i just let my hand not moving between D D and UDU?
I have some problem reading the strumming pattern
Like the D D UDU, it is just easier for me to digest that as UDU D D because there is some kind of pause between the D D and the UDU, so it seems like a UDU D D, instead of D D UDU in my head
idk if that was the wrong way to take it .-., anyone have the same problem?
Am I the only one messing up the strumming if I ever try to change chords, sing or do anything else that the strumming? Even if I change from Am to F or any other extremely easy switch, when I change chords the movement of my left hand affects my right hand :( (a bit like when you learn to drive (manual shift) and when you put 5 gear you move the steering wheel to the side too). I'm not even there for the riptide strum, hehe, but I could manage the island strum at least... :)
I guess it is better to focus on mastering the chord first, if the chord has become a second nature to us, messing around with the strumming would be easier i guess
Is it ok to Switch the chords while in half of the strumming pattern DDDDu
Like I'm in C and want to switch to let's Say G7 and I go DD on c chord and emidietly switch to G7 and Than I'll be going DDU
Try using the thumb and play to your strengths! If your hand is relaxed and the tone is good, continue using it!
@@BernadetteTeachesMusic I have to admit, my hand is more relaxed when I strum with my thumb, everything just comes together easier. There's no tension.
Then continue developing that strum! Play to your strengths!
why cant i just do the riptide strum without those fake ones. they mess me up when i try ;-; i just go down down and wait then up down up
Exactly what I thought
I just wait at the bottom and just think of the speed of the song
(This is to everyone that see’s especially beginners)
Mess around and see what works you don’t have to do exactly the same as someone else she’s says to use index I use thumb which ever is more comfortable
I use a pick.
This is a judgement call. Some people like the sound of a pick and others don't. Some people also want to protect the top of their ukulele, which a pick can damage more quickly. It's definitely up to each individual to choose :)
why the 'fake' strokes? why not just pause til the next stroke ? Thanks.
So that your timing and flow remain consistent 😃🤍
ur cute smile though
😬😬😬

I resent the political comments of Elizabeth Warren, before your ukulele classes. Is this something that pays for your classes?
Was there an advertisement from Elizabeth Warren before this video?
Everybody gets different ads that are targeted for them. Whenever I watch my videos (to review them), I get ads for allergy medications or skin care.
I’m really sorry you had an unpleasant ad. I think RUclips now gives viewers the option to give a thumbs up or down to the ads shown before videos.
