Kannan Raven He’s a senior minister who has represented Singapore in many fronts. Pretty sure one ‘mess up’ doesn’t mean he can’t do the job he was given as a minister.
Dr Chee was merely asking a question, an honest one, about whether or not the PAP is planning on raising the population up to 10 million. He did not pick up that number through random thoughts but rather, referred to an article where DPM Heng Swee Keat cited former chief planner Liu Thai Ker that Singapore should plan for 10 million people for it to remain sustainable in the long term. While it may not be an official plan of the government to do so, as Dr. Chee said HSK was toying with that idea and number especially having said that Singapore's population density is not excessive. Furthermore, the person he cited was not any Tom Dick or Harry. Hence I find it valid that Dr. Chee and the SDP actually raised this point to get some clarity from the PAP on its plans regarding population growth as such statements like those mentioned by HSK may have caused alarm to the hearts of the ordinary reader.
This simply shows we need opposition in Parliament.

What I failed to understand is that Dr Vivian should explain and why we need 10 m or do not need 10 m and not be defensive. We have the right to know what the govt policy is. I find that many a time the ministers brushed aside questions which they find difficult to answer for whatever reasons. What do they fear? Don't have the knowledge? Don't have the skills to articulate or express themselves? Fear of rebuttals? Singaporeans have the right to know. Our late PM LKY once said Politics is about getting the people to buy-in the policies/ideas.

I met Dr Vivian Balakrishnan once during a meet-the-people session and sought assistance for my family. He did not even bother to address my concerns and brushed me off. He was neither approachable nor helpful. Honestly, it seemed like he was there for the sake of appearance and not to truly listen to us.

Don't get me wrong, I am not a PAP supporter but just a sound neutral Singaporean believing in facts and effectivve & incorruptible governance regardless who may be in power. However, too much import will impact the livelihood of locals who are less competitive. So there is a balance of workforce to strive for in accordance to the kind of business nature that the world needs for growth. Singaporeans by and large needs to continue upgrading their skills to stay competitive which the current government hass been advocating and been providing support to aide the upgrading. I believe the government had heed the advice from the citizenry complaint after 2011 election as far as the rate of foreign imports are concerned. As far as CPF withdrawal is concerned, why would an early withdrawal proposed by the opposition will helpsolve financial issues? Instead of proposing earlier withdrawal, I would rather advice people to upgrade their skill and improve their earnings to boost their CPF contributions for a better retirement plan.

Well, that’s what Singaporeans thought 25 years ago. Lo and behold, our humble 3 mil population has increased to a whopping 5.9 mil today in a matter of years. I didn’t know Singaporeans are so reproductive! The irony is only 2.65 mil true blue Singaporeans today are eligible to vote. What does this tell us? The population is creeping up steadily and it’s scary to think that we are now surrounded by foreigners and immigrants everywhere we go. We can’t help feeling that the population will keep rising as there’s no direction or certainty from the government that enough is enough. I sure hope it won’t be 6.9 or 10 million or I’ll have to sleep in a bedroom the size of my toilet cubicle.

@Wong Family ..Really, 3.5 mil is the perfect figure to have to strike that balance. LKY is indeed far sighted. Look at us now. This massive influx of foreign workers from unskilled labourers to professionals has blown out of proportions.
Our people have to make noise to tell the government to curb their obsession with getting new people in because it has negatively impacted our social system. Singaporeans now have to fight for jobs, land space etc so much so many of our local talents have chosen to migrate or work overseas. I’ve known of a PhD holder who lost his job to 3 foreigners who are also PhD holders doing his job but at lesser salaries. This is how Singaporeans are being treated now. It’s sad.

the 10m issue has really made the issue of planning so wrong. What is wrong with planning for the future? the 10m was brought up by Mr Lui, the master planner for modern Singapore and in the article, he specifically state it is for urban planning and for 2100 as he is worried about the land suppply as that is the constraint we are facing. This is planning dor the future and what is wrong of that to plan for the future??? you think land are birth overnight?? we need to reclaim land and when done it has to be settled down many years b2fore it can be used. I believe Singaporean won't mind paying if it benefit "US", Singaporeans, for our development as a nation and support for our own people, FOR Singaporeans. Instead, we are paying to support not only citizens, but also foreigners living here, technically. They say they're putting Siangporeans first when it comes to jobs but they opening more doors for foreigners instead. Are you telling me that you cannot find local talents? Regards to education, millions of $$ wasted to pay for foreigners education while locals still need to pay for school fees...money to support foreigners that we cannot get back when they refuse to pay back and run away after their education here.
The 100Billion was drawing heavily from the reserves - which was saved from previous terms of governments from the Merdeka and Pioneer generation. It all boils down to a single concept, sustainability - "meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs". If the previous cabinets had adopted a similar attitude, we would not be here today comfortably discussing the theoretical premise of checks and balances in the governance, but about much much more dire issues.
Of course, let's take it from the gentlemen that has been unemployed for god knows how long, drawing from the welfare benefits provided by the state to advise us on how we should plan our budget. We need opposition and constructive opposition in parliament. CSJ and SDP does not even remotely come close to that category.

Foreign PMET is instrumental for Singapore economy growth. They bring skill set, culture and investment. To keep singapore economy competitive, they should bring in more foreign PMET, not less.
If I wanted to know more about their culture I would have gone to their country as a tourist. Not let them here so we could be more exposed to different cultures blah blah. Nope. Not that way.
By the way I got no reason to be drawn in to the common perception here that they compete for jobs with the locals as I'm already doing my own business now. But when I was a worker I remember clearly from my impression most of them foreigners in the service industry here are lazy.
