Maynard is the master of creating intense and high energy vocal performances that sound loud and strained but are actually relaxed without strain. One of a kind gift that inspires. Chris, I'd love to see you do a video on Peter Gabriel's 'forward' vocal style. I experiment in his style but often find that I'm trying to hit all kinds notes and it just sounds mushy.
THIS!!! You are nailing everything that went wrong with me as a young singer in this video. I was in a band where our buddy was the sound engineer and he always turned everything loud BUT my mic. I constantly asked to put me louder so that maybe I don't have to scream so much in order to be heard and the musicians always laughed at me pointing out that as a singer, it's my job to sing and to sing LOUD so that I can be heard over the music. I was young and believed it. Well, I am still in the process of un-learning those toxic habits that have worn out my voice so fast. By the way,I am a student of your discover your voice-program and it helped me so much with unlocking tension and blockages in my vocal instrument. Thanks Chris
This is why all singers need vocal training and coaching, no matter their genre or skill level. Yes Whitney Houston and Kurt Cobain were two of the greatest vocal performers who ever lived, but they also modeled really bad practice for professional singers. You can’t keep pushing your larynx into more and more extreme notes and transitions without proper vocal warmup and maintenance. Plus even the most perfectly flawless natural singer will find it impossible to reach all their potential without training. I’ve been singing in multi-octave range my entire life as an amateur, but now I’m desperately looking for a coach now that I’m becoming a performing singer and musician.
Dude, you have some of the best content out there. I'm not a singer. Just a guitarist. But the voice has always fascinated me. Your last video on what mixed voice actually is was so informative. I hope you'll do more vids on Sebastian Bach in the future, and really get into his vibrato, and type(s) of vocal distortion; in particular, the final verse and full end of I Remember You. I've heard only a handful of singers actually nail it.
Start singing bro... i found my voice because of chris liepe and the singer "eden/the eden project" about 4 years ago. Started writing my own music about 3 years ago.... Chris liepe is THE MAN, and it's worth finding your voice if you play ANY instrument. Best of luck!
YES. This is something I’ve realized too. And it applies to harsh vocals too. I think the key foundation to “really getting it” is that what you hear is not always what they’re doing.
Just like any skill, singing is more about applying proper technique (for what you're aiming to sound like) than power/effort. Ofc learning the proper technique (what to feel and listen for) is not something that can be done in a day. I definitely still aim for power/effort too often, at the expense of quality.. lol
Maynard is another great vocalist. He’s got that Celtic tambre. It sounds so good. Thank you for pointing out the small finesse techniques to the craft. I too would thrash out my voice early on using bad technique, basically yelling trying to sing as loud as I can thinking that was the way to nail the vibrations.
Dude so awesome, I had a tracheostomy as an infant, barely could speak when young. I took a few formal singing lessons at 18 (im 40 now) and i can project my voice better than a lot of people now. Maynard, Freddy M, and Chester B, Layne Staley are and have been huge inspirations for singing. Love your channel, so stoked you covering this performance by Maynard, that taught me a ton too!
Guys, Chris is such a good vocal coach (and I mean it, I've been with many others before) but it gets me so sad that he does not have the exposure he deserves. Personally I always recommend him to all my friends that want to start or improve their singing, I hope you can do the same, would be awesome for your friends and Chris.
There was a few songs that i learned from nirvana, lake of fire and another. But after the last time i sang them my voice would get a dry scratch on song i sang flawlessly. Tho kurts voice so iconic, i always heard he spit and cough blood because of house harsh he sang. Kurts singing wasent the healthiest. But it was awesome.
Thank you for the video Chris! I was unironically trying to belt with a mixed voice today and while I didn't do any major damage, I'm definitely feeling it now. Your video really helped me get a proper perspective on projection and also trying to get characteristics out of vocal performance versus simply singing.
Great video! Until I took your Discover Your Voice course, I ploughed through everything lol I was just remarking today, after reviewing a newly completed project, what a difference your teaching and coaching has made in my performances, especially in this area of belting and dynamic placement. So grateful 🙏
Woo, that worked! I was just trying to figure out belting (from twang, which is more natural to me) and pushing the resonance forward really helped. Clarifying that it is not about pushing but resonating also did. By the way, a tip I got for getting into the belt was to move the cheeks upward (like a wide grin), have you tried that? Keep up with these videos! Cheers!
The main, big, obvious difference between Cobain and Keenan is the fact that Kurt played guitar, the phisicality of the instrument, the fact you're moving your arms around it, takes away from the body movements you need to do for belting. It's as simple as that. Personally I follow the Hetfield approach, low microphone and bowing down body position so I can push air from the stomach (when I remember to do, it still have to get fully in my muscle memory).
@Norce555 sorry, have you ever tried singing either while playing intermediate stuff or without playing an instrument? Of course anatomics and habits influence voices because, guess what, we all were born different, it's called genetics. If you noticed Keenan bends and bows down when belting out the highest notes, impossible to do it the same way with a guitar and a microphone stand in the way, DUH!
kurt sounded amazing, and he can’t be recreated without hurting yourself because he had a horrible technique and would often blow his voice out after one song according to dave, you can hear a difference if you compare for example, live at the paramount vs live and loud, live at the paramount he has a ton of pitch and sings super high, but during L&L he’s super low, and if you look at their final show he just can’t sing at all
Maynard definitely belted the last “He did it all for you!” But it was within his range and stamina as a musician. Learn your limits. Test them and grow. Your voice can be trained just like any muscle
because there is no tab or chords for singing people don't get it, best thing anyone can do to get started is buy a pa system and a decent microphone, then they'll realize what you are saying.. i can rasp at low volume, other people are jealous, like you its a skill, your cat metaphor was helpful , i could already do it, but that really helped me really nail it.
Finding a belt was one of the first few things I learned “right”, and it was almost funny watching this video bc it clicked for me after seeing a perfect circle live while I was trying to pin down Orestes very early in my singing journey. Maynard’s an absolute power house
In that vein I saw Beats do an interview with the remains of Sound Garden. He asked them point blank how loud did Chris sing? Answer Loud, they could hear him clearly over the drums.
Hey Chris! I think you should react to ados "viva happy" cover. Its unlike anything you would have heard from her. Her vocal range in it is absolutely insane. She plays 4 different characters vocals, and goes all the way from a deep manly voice to a high feminine pitch. It's insane. I'd love to see you react to it.
I was impressed how low volume the singer from Crypta, death metal band, sings when she demonstrates that in an interview and she says that, let the mic work
Great video as always! Have you considered making a vocal analysis/reaction to Kamelot's former singer Roy Khan? There is a great live version of their song Abandoned on RUclips for reference. An analysis for their current singer Tommy Karevik would also be much appreciated 😊 Kamelot sung by Roy is special to me as that was the music that inspired me to find my voice and improve my singing. Your videos on technique have been instrumental in my learning path.
You should consider checking out Villain Utattemita by Ado. It's very different to what she's done before and speaks a surprising amount of English in it, though it is mostly Korean. It's very catchy too, I can't get away from it.
The loudness debate rears its ugly head again and again. I wish somebody would just establish a benchmark and get a bunch of vocalists to lay down some samples. The. We can say, hey when this guy drops an E5 on us, it’s smoking loud, when this guys does it it’s really loud. She sings an A5 in a piercing reenforce falsetto which sound higher than it even is, and she growls a A5 but it’s actually really quiet. I know there are physical reasons why such data might be harder to benchmark, but what progress could we make in training if we just set a standard and started gathering data.
You can use front or back though. He's not belting either hes weak. Hes weak face forward there. He can use power though. I liked tool. But he wasnt great, he was very good. Mine works best front or back. I edited it so I didnt insult fans.
Hello Chris, I really like watching you analyze vocal techniques and even more I like how you select a style, notice what voices famous vocalists resemble. Please, if you have time, pay attention to the vocalist Henning May from the band AnnenMayKantereit. Thank you. If anyone was also surprised by Henning May's vocals, put a Like to this comment
Hi chriss, can you help us make a video about / explain about the different type of scream ado has from her different song, such as unravel, aishite, crime and punishment, or tot musica, which one is a pure scream, growl, or maybe valseto scream? Or even just a fry yell.. I am not a profesional singer so i don't really get / know the technique. Thank you. M
funny that if you llisten to the isolated vocals from the nevermind lithium you can hear its sung quite quietly.. the chorus.. live that often isnt possible i guess. in the mix the lithium chorus sounded very distortet and fat but isolated its rather non-aggressive.
It might be time for me to give up on singing. I'm not a young man anymore. I have pitched and sold a few songs as a songwriter. But it's difficult to pitch songs with a voice like mine.
I was listening to And Justice For All isolated vocal track and after almost every phrase, James would clear his throat, and I wonder is that a good or bad thing?
Generally it's a very bad thing. It means there is irritation. He is pushing too much air through and it's drying out his throat. Water can help but it generally means, his voice isn't connected properly.
Recommendation! A Russian girl called Diana Ankudinova has the deepest singing voice I EVER heard. Her best performance that I know of is derniere danse ( last dance )
Basically what I learned is everyone's physiology is different, listen to your body, don't imitate others and be your comfortable self. When performing through a mic always leverage the power of the digital, if you're not cheating you're not trying.
One of the most foundational therapeutic effects singing can give you is being able to fully embrace the fact that you sound like you. It’s understandable to want to emulate the techniques of your inspirations, but don’t do it at the expense of your voice.

Ive also spit blood aftee intense singing... a few times
@@swedensbestrapperThat ain’t good.
He also smoked like a chimney
Kurt used to blow his voice out according to Dave Grohl

You’re allowed to say Kurt had bad technique. We won’t be upset.
Exactly,it was part his charm,i mean, that messy way Kurt made his music.

For myself, a baritone trying to unlock the higher register, imitating Maynard has generally always been a good idea. The guy knows what he's doing.
Super useful insight!
Great video! Great advice!

Hey there! Kinda trying to learn how to sing after just singing along for years. Thanks for the great content!
I like what you were saying about the mic. Makes a lot of sense. Also, now "I did it all for you..." is going to be stuck in my head!
"what'll it take to get it THROUGH to YOU preCIOUS!" maynard's great hahaha
I noticed after belting it's harder to back to softer more gentle singing. Not to mention my bridge gets jacked up. Cord closure becomes hooty flutey
The main, big, obvious difference between Cobain and Keenan is the fact that Kurt played guitar, the phisicality of the instrument, the fact you're moving your arms around it, takes away from the body movements you need to do for belting.

In that vein I saw Beats do an interview with the remains of Sound Garden. He asked them point blank how loud did Chris sing? Answer Loud, they could hear him clearly over the drums.
I use it on the chorus of my song, ‘War God’. It is satisfying
You should do an analysis of the song Living Sin by ELP, Greg lake does a lot of very comfortable and gritty lows, then sings a chorus 3 octaves up
Hey Chris! Would you ever do a video reacting or analyzing Yannis Papadopoulos of Beast In Black? His voice and technique are unbelievable!
Hey Chris! I think you should react to ados "viva happy" cover. Its unlike anything you would have heard from her. Her vocal range in it is absolutely insane.
