  • The Ryzen 7 3700X can be had on the used market for UNDER $100 USD... and at these prices, coupled with say an RTX 3070 or even the RX 7800 XT... is 2019's value 8 core champion going to present any CPU bottlenecks? Well there is only one way to find out, and that is buy it, benchmark and report the results!

I've worked on 2 systems where the memory speeds/stability degraded over time and both times cleaning the dimm slots and ddr4 contacts with alcohol and a toothbrush (gently) would allow me to push the memory speeds higher. These PCs were used by or around people that smoke, though I suspect this could still happen just given a long enough period of time. This could potentially show up more for those who push their ram to the raggedy edge of stability. Anyway, if your system used to be stable (assuming you didn't use crazy voltages) and now it's not, maybe try giving the slots/dimms a clean. Obviously don't do this while plugged in to power and be sure everything is dry before powering the PC back on.

I got a 3800x used back in 2022 for $200. 3800x is supposed to be the "Best silicon" version of the 3700x bin, but otherwise pretty much the same in every way. Running on a Tomahawk b450, G.Skill FlareX 3200 CL14 memory, and RTX 3080 10gb. I picked up the 3080 when the prices dropped down to $850 new. Using a 1440p ultrawide monitor so resolutions are between 1440p -> 4K. Can get 75-95 FPS on various titles running many settings at ultra and a few dropped down to high. Here recently been playing Darktide, Robocop, Red Dead Redemption, and Baldur's Gate 3. Mostly I just click the in game recommended settings button and then enable DLSS. Recently I updated my BIOS and didn't realize that XMP got disabled by the update. I played some games and thought my CPU was dying because everything was a bit choppy as CPU load increased. Realized something wasn't right when I saw the cache latency on CPUID was running at CL16. Checked the BIOS and corrected the XMP issue and everything went to buttery smooth. So, the FlareX memory running at the tight CL14 timings smooths gameplay quite a bit.

This might not matter as much, but if you're using LLMs as much as I am, cpu power is important. I'm still using a Ryzen 7 3700x, and it's still able to keep up running multiple LLMs.
But threadrippers are the premium choice in the future if you're an AMD fan boi like me. Gaming is cool, but seeing what these LLMs can do is really exciting, and my nerd level is over 9000 !

I think you should better use 1% lows instead of 0.1% lows since they are too sensible to catch a random stutter that might not even be game related .... see in Cyberpunk the 3700X matching the 7950X3D in 0.1% lows at 1080p but way behind at 1440p, or the 29fps in Apex at 1080p but 185 at 1440p.... also in baldurs gate getting 3 or 13fps in 0.1%s is irrelevant since both mean that the picture basically freezes for a moment.

From my experiences with Zen2 chips, be happy it reached 3333 with that memory. I couldn't get the ones I worked with to do past 3200, even with 3600 memory. It took going up to Zen 3 to get those kinds of speeds. I don't think it's the IMC, but rather than Infinity Fabric speeds that hold it back. Zen1 and Zen+ were even worse, barely able to get to 2933, and then only with the right memory.

Just paid €80 for a 3700X - an upgrade from an i7 4790K and it's amazing. I couldn't care less about gaming any more, or which GPU works best with it.
An Xbox was cheaper than a GPU so I gave up on the PC gaming.
I got it for productivity and general desktop use, for which you can't go wrong at the price.
Perhaps it's best side (productivity) is worth a mention?

I remember having to bump up SOC Voltage on a brand new 3700X slightly (not by much) to reach DDR XMP (was DOCP on my board) 3600 speeds with full stability. It could be IMC degradation, on your chip, or it may have always been this way.

Yes the 3000 series has issues with ram speeds above 2666. I've ran my 3700X at 2666, 3000, 3200 and the full XMP of my ram of 3600 with zero performance change in gaming, benchmarks or general use. Did the same with a 5600X and saw performance difference. Seems the memory control in the 3000's has issues.

I in rural Australia, everything needs to be posted.. On Ebay I believe the 6 cores Ryzen second hand are going for just a little to much.. I can get a tray 3600 or a 5500 for around a $150 dollars new but a Second hand 3600 between $100-120. The 3700X are selling around $150 so a better deal, but for gaming isn't any proof 8 cores are better then 6. I ended up buying a 3100 for $50 before posted, that was really a 4100 that still as not been posted, I was email by the seller that said it was a 4100. Around $200 dollars for a 5600 new is what I'm looking at now, that has PCI-E 4.

Everything I have heard is do not buy a KF if you want to use an editing software that supports quicksync. Even with a discrete card, the addition of the quicksync from the IGP is worthwhile. Honestly - I am of the opinion just do not buy a KF unless it's a strong discount. I will gladly pay the $20-30 to get the quicksync support and extra troubleshooting feature. Even for streaming, being able to use the quicksync encoder to take all of the load off both the CPU and the GPU can help.
