I don't think anyone talks that much about Brave in general, which I don't get. It's easily in my top 5 Pixar movies.

Exactly! Like come on, there are not a lot of cartoon films set in Scotland with such a spunky protagonist. This made me cry when I was younger and cry when I was olde, for curious reasons, but it's a great film.

This is why I follow you! I always thought that the wisps were the three brothers trying to lead Merida to Mor'du. I'm glad someone shares a similar thought process as I do. Thank you for doing this video!

I'm glad this theory is able to resonate with people and I'm not hearing "_____ already said this" - that's the worst when I get an epiphany and it turns out to be old news!

this was a super interesting theory! honestly when I watched this movie I'd thought of the wisps as fae who represented fate, kinda leading people where they're meant to be. the first interaction with the wisps (and subsequently mor'du) was a way to trigger an event that was always meant to happen (in this case the fight where the father loses his leg)
later on in the movie when Meredith is thrown off her horse and into the Stonehenge-esque circle (which always gave me fairy ring vibes), and her will and desire to change her to change her fate is so strong that they decide to lead her to the witches cottage, the only person (that we know of) who can change her fate, and I think she my have unintentionally made a deal with the fae
I think Meredith actually has been given two goals: first mending her relationship with her mother, which would then lead to breaking the cycle of tradition that she's seeking to escape, and the second is what she is giving the fae in this exchange: bringing an end to mor'du. to break away from the cycle of tradition she has to break the cycle of anger and resentment that got mor'du where he is and putting his spirit to rest (as for why the wisps would care so much about mor'du, my guess would be because his curse made him immortal, can't help but imagine that beings ties to fate would be none too pleased with him escaping death, a fate all of us have.) because of that I also don't think it was a coincidence he was killed in (and by) the fairy ring-esque stone circle.
sorry if this isn't very well thought out or doesn't make a lot of sense haha

Ooooh very interesting ideas! I love the way you're thinking here, and there definitely is something fairy ring-esc about that stone hinge, now that you mention it! The wisps never go inside of it either!

I love this! Listened to it 3 times in a row & I see your point. Also, I have a theory: Ariel's sisters. Why are there 7? I know I'm medical history the more heirs to a thrown = guarantee that the bloodline lives on, but from look of Atlantica it'd a happy, beautiful kingdom, meaning Attina ( orange one with brown hair) will take thrown after Triton passes. If he has enough heirs to throne, why did he have such a fit when Ariel wanted to move out? & Have you noticed that each sibling have a different tail colour? What does that imply to them?

  • @troperhghar9898

I think mordu becoming a psychopathic blood thirsty bear is based on the "bear-serker" when I Scandinavian warrior would wear a bear fur cloak (a serk) take some hallucinogenic plants and charge into battle in a rage while unable to feel pain
The idea being that mordu and Eleanor is that they aren't being replaced with a bear, they're being consumed by the bear's *rage*
And before you say "they're Scottish not Vikings" 1 it's Hollywood remember how to train your dragon and 2 there is a long history of intermingling between Scottish Celts and pre Viking era Scandinavians

Surely the wisps aren’t just the three brothers maybe they are thousands of souls even if three of them are the brothers. Also this just randomly occurred to me, Merida has three younger brothers & so does mor du. Maybe there’s a connection there.

Fergus says in "The Song of Mor'du" that Mor'du killed many children. I assumed the wisps were those children.

You know I always wondered the wisps I know they lead mysterious secrets and legendary locations but the wips in my opinion are clearly grand neutral in grand scheme of things with the mystery behind them I believe that there spirits from another world that serve the hero's journey story trope

I think these particular wisps had a lot more going on than the traditional folklore characterizations.

one thing i think is flawed about your theory on the whisps being the brothers of mordu is the that there are more than just 3 whisps. there a was a long line of them when guiding merideth and the mom to mordus home

Rewatched Brave a few weeks earlier, and your new video made it easy for me to attach your additional darker context to help me understand the movie more and make it have a little bit more sense. At least within the subplot of Mordu and his family.
But now it feels more like Brave is trying to tell two different stories that is weakly bridged together only because of mirrored plotline similarities such as: the bear curse, royal family ties, probably the theme of parent and child needing to communicate better when it comes to making important kingdom decisions (Merida and her mom=marriage alliance, Mordu and his dad=kingdom inheritance).
But the weird thing is, these two generational stories have nothing to do with each other. Mordu's story has nothing to do with marriage alliance like Merida's, nor does Merida have anything to deal with earning an inheritance from her parents. And nor does any of their consequences affect the other's lives. Only that Mordu's story was entirely just a warning for Merida to watch out what happens when she opposes her mother. But then the wisps decided to barge in one day and call someone else from a later generation to help stop a problem that they were never really supposed to be integratedly involved with.
Should've Merida been written a story that truly revolves around her as the dominant active main character?
Is this why Brave has this weirdly, fundamentally, organically disconnected plot structure? 🤔

We actually named out cat after Merida cuz she was a brave little kitten who is a mostly black calico kitty with bits of ginger and she looked like an insanely small bear cub as a kitten. She’s a huge cuddle bug now and won’t leave me alone if I’m sitting she has to be on my lap no matter what

This will of the wisp idea depends on how you think of fairies looking smoky as they fly quietly. In old will of the wisp history there's even a will of the wisp dragon. Similar historic situation with the word Duende in Scotland and Spain there's a Duende dragon by surprise.

It definitely has so many moments that don't make sense or don't mesh well, but I think that's because they focused on the wrong things too much and the interesting things not enough (well, that and removing the female creative voices from the film!).

I'm thinking it would've made sense if merida was the bear! Think about it... merida has too much pride in her masculinity than being peaceful in mind and minding her mother's advice because eleanor didn't want merida to get hurt! And also, merida is so rude to her mother for helping her be feminine instead of growing up into a brutess more brute than shrek! And finally, she is evil for giving her own mother a cake that could've been poisoned instead of transforming! If I was a queen and her mother, i would've sentenced my daughter to 45 years in jail as punishment, for treason and attempted murder to familiarity! I would've cared more about love and justice than just my kids! Also, i would've renounced her title as princess and future queen, 1. She doesn't act like a princess, being all brutal and snarky 2. I wouldn't have put up with murder and severe injuries. 3. Finally, the kingdom doesn't deserve to suffer all because of her immature, irresponsible, and selfish behavior!
