I did a swap 2.5 years ago on my 986 with the 1.8 turbo vw/Audi engine and the engine bolts right up to the original Porsche 5 speed transmission I have put 20,000 miles on it and it’s so much more fun and reliable than the original complex 2.5l box engine, way more room under there and way cheaper than the original engine
Thank you for doing this. So many boxsters with blown engines. No point of fixing the original. This is a perfect option. Hopefully one day plug and play. 🎉
Wow. The timing is really interesting. I just went back through your Cayman videos last night, to see what it would take to K swap a Boxter. Hours later you have posted a video of just that. Very excited!
From a guy who has a turbo VR6 swapped boxster, i would love to see a simple flywheel and bell housing adapter kit to mate a k20/24 to the existing gearbox. It will definitely fit longitudinally without having to touch the gearbox location. The vr6 is a much taller motor and only required some minor trimming to the BIW where the front and top engine covers meet. I would develop 1 kit to fit the 986 5 speeds and 987.1 6 speeds. They are interchangeable (with respect to engine mating, not necessarily with respect to chassis) i actually have a 987.1 6 speed in my 986 with few custom bits. Thats a story for another time.
You also have to think about the secondary effects of this swap. Power steering. Cooling system pumping, and vacuum assistance for brakes. There are actually solutions to all of these, it just increases the scope of the swap.
Hey Nick! Awesome k-swap videos my friend. I'm hoping to do a double swap some day. K series into a Boxster chassis, and swap a 69 Beetle body onto that. A k-series swap kit for the Boxster would make this so much more feasible. Good luck getting it all dialed in. Can't wait for the next video. Thanks!
Holy crap it actually fits in there very nicely. You’re right that the engine ideally should fit under the engine cover, since the softtop sits directly on top of the engine cover. 987 Boxster engine covers are a fairly direct swap onto the 986 Boxster, so not sure if the 987 cover offers a little more clearance underneath or not? Something you could look into. Lots of room for the intake to sit at the side vent location where the stock intake would sit, so that’s great for cool air. Can’t wait to see more progress on this!
You can fit an Audi v8 in there with only a custom engine frame and pipe rework. The only issue is how tall the engine is, the Audi needs a bit more than is available so the removable cover plate needs modifications.
I so can't wait to see how you get on with this swap kit.... Very tempted to find a boxer/cayman that has no engine and gearbox. I wonder if a k24a3 and auto box would fit any differently in the boxer/cayman????
Uh, subbed. Makes much more sense than K into a Miata. 2.5 Boxsters are cheap, wonderful cars to drive around, good transaxle for the power. A base boxster with a well built NA motor would be hilarious fun. My dad's 3.8 built '00 S cost a small fortune, finally built, sleeved, and reliable, but becoming valuable quickly and less appealing to beat on. We need to have some affordable fun p cars still! That car is down to about 2650lbs with most of the factory stuff in. Mostly that is exhaust, brakes, seats, and a few other bits saving the weight.
How does the K24 measure up to the Porsche 3.2 when it comes to torque? Can you get it to make similar torque numbers when boosted? I have a high mileage 987.1 Boxster and I'm interested in a swap. By the way bumping the engine cover an inch in the back won't interfere with the top.
How much boost do you want to run? Torque kills these motors, so don't think it will feel like an Audi turbo where there's lots of torque down low and runs out of steam. Even the k24 s without a new oil pump can spin pretty high and that's where they like to make power. If you look at a dyno of a k24 making big hp, it dwarfs the torque of a 3.2 by mistake. Engines are just air pumps and turbo k24s are pretty efficient air pumps.
Something to consider is that a 3.2 Boxster that I own is geared EXTREMELY long. Gearing makes a huge difference in regards to torque multiplication and if he’s using a Honda transaxle then you have an insane amount of gearing options from gear to gear and final drives. This means you can gear down the transaxle in a very hardcore manner and it’s what I would do. High RPM and a ton of gear.
I had a boxster with no motor that I converted to electric. I agree 100% that being mid-engine they are awful to work on, you really have to do everything from the bottom and need a lift, so not friendly for home gamers. The honda motor doesn't look very good for working on it from below! An electric motor doesn't need anything worked on...all the electronics can be placed at more convenient locations and you just run wires to the motor.
Hi there. I've been wanting to do this swap for some time. I don't yet have anything not even the car but will do in the near future. Do you do the kits as in loom adaptor and gearbox adaptors and such? I'm in the uk but I'm certainly interested. Thank you and keep up the good work
I've got an 02, 3.2 liter, 6 speed, 986 Porsche Boxster S with Fabspeed Exhaust, CAI, catlees headers, IPD Plenum/TB Numeric shifter etc... There is NO replacement for the Porsche flat 6 wail/howl!It has a different, richer level of exhaust and intake sounds that cannot be duplicated by a 4 banger... That said I luv the sound of a nicely tuned Honda F20 or K series at WOT as well. Just not in a Porsche 😂 There is no substitute!
This is going to be amazing. Are you taking deposits yet, Nick? Got a 99 with a blown clutch, and I want to replace the clutch as I bolt it on to the k24!
I thought you scanned the Cayman. Guessing you will scan the Boxster and build an adapter that works on both. I thought you did that already. Im asking for a friend with a 4 piston k24 and a black Cayman, lol.
Any updates on this? I'm on the opposite side of the country as you, but I'd love to send you my 986 Boxster (with soft top permanently removed) to do a full K-series and DSG swap if you get this all worked out.
Hey Nick I want to Kswap my 68 bug running a freeway flyer vw trans.... my question is do i need to flip the ring gear... couple people said I do but since ur doing rear motor install i figure i ask u for u may no... thanks in advance
There's a bearing that's supposed to make the timing chain last longer, which is dumb since timing chains are already known to be super reliable, well if that bearing goes then the whole engine is toast which is basically ironic. I don't know about these Boxster motors.

I swear you are the mad scientist we all needed. K swap the freaking world my guy
@mauriceclark6093..Ya!...cause he drinks Molson Canadian and he knows things!..duh???
So many Porsches I can see coming back to life k swapped!
Thank you for doing this. So many boxsters with blown engines. No point of fixing the original. This is a perfect option. Hopefully one day plug and play. 🎉

I've been eyeing boxster which I never found too appealing because of this, please make the kit!
Looks really good in the bay! I can’t even imagine how crazy that would be with 500hp lolz
I've been loving all the Porsche k swap videos you do, they're great! Can't wait to buy a kit when you start final production 😉
Can’t wait to ship you a 964 😅 So happy you’re doing this and documenting the process!
Liked! Subscribed! As a Honda guy, I totally love these swaps...getting the best of both worlds.
1 year later? Any updates?
This boxster k swapped with the Vale kit would be mind boggling!!! I want one!!
I have a cayman style hardtop for the 986 if you're interested! along with a stock 986. ive been meaning to get rid of it.

The Porsche K swap king 🦾

Your Boxster swap might make a fun track car☺
Do it! I just picked up a Boxter roller. Waiting on your kit!!!!
Beautiful workmanship. New sub here. Thank you
Yes! I wanted to know if this could be done. Suck they have gone up in price like crazy.
Love this 986 project! Do you have a cost estimate for doing this swap? (Including all parts and labor?)
I think the motor sticking up that high would be an issue with the soft stop in the down position. This is a really exciting idea.
I have a k24 in hand now! 😁 cant wait to see something mounted in there
Dude this is sick. I really wanted to get a boxter or a 02 mustang GT. Wasn't sure what the voxter was capable of and voila here you are.
Loving this series. Always been a Honda engines fanatic but we need better chassis options. This is such a fantastic combo!
YESS LET GOOO!! Gonna be sick!
Any update on the 986 Kswap?
Kswap the world nick, would love to get something tuned by you in the future
Paying attention, love the idea ... keep it coming
Where can I buy mounts?
I heard k swap the world a long time ago. hell yeah for making it work.
Any updates I’m really interested in buying a kit from you
I’ve literally been contemplating this the last few days (no youtube searches bc i assumed it hadnt been done) and then you popped up 😂😂😂
Incredible work

How much lower is your valve cover vs stock and what's the price? Do you think there is enough room for a supercharger vs turbo?
agree with mad scientist, any future plans for a front engined 968
Actually, the K24 leans forward on a Honda Accord/TSX. No oil pan mods needed.
I so can't wait to see how you get on with this swap kit....
Very tempted to find a boxer/cayman that has no engine and gearbox.
I wonder if a k24a3 and auto box would fit any differently in the boxer/cayman????
if you come out with a kit.....im going after a boxster and would LOVE to do this swap.

K24 porche
Can't believe this is all going down in Ontario
You’re a genius

How is this going? I got my boxter 1997 just need your kit or help lol great work!!!
Can you do a 0-60 run in the 911 please 🙏
You feel like selling the fenders? I hit 2 deer and would love factory panels for a replacement.
Super excited
I thought there would have been quite a few differences between the 986 and 987 platforms, measurements etc, is that not the case?
What was the full price of the build minus the porsche?
How close are you to making the kit? I’m from the Detroit, my dad has a porsche boxster that has been sitting for years.
I want 1. When will it be ready for the 986. 2001 reg
You going to sell that Cayman when you're done?
I love your work
How you will control the Dsg with stand alone Tcm??
can i ask since you will use the k20 how you will make a porsche to honda axles?
Hey any updates on this?
Any kit updates for availability Nick?
Do you have a boxster kit yet?
Hey Nick I want to Kswap my 68 bug running a freeway flyer vw trans.... my question is do i need to flip the ring gear... couple people said I do but since ur doing rear motor install i figure i ask u for u may no... thanks in advance
Does you 997 kit work for potential 996? Just wondering
Yes indeed - 996 is basically the same, so there will be a 996 version as well
nice job...thanks for sharing...
Any updates ?
Did you ever get this thing swapped?
Bro like I'm so confused.. Are we talking about a Honda motor? 🤣🤔
Will this kit work with the awd 996’s?
First ! Good video as always 🙌🏾
Damn! I have a 987 I would let you do this on!!
This is great. Poor man's porsche race car.
Oh my boxster s is next
Vengo por el chamo tuning😂
BoKster for me 🤙🏾
💯👍
Yaaaaaass
Wonderfull.
these k series engine will be more expensive then a porsche engine within 5 years
That Boxster was a wreck 😢
Tilt thay thing way forward, leave the engine cover alone so our roadsters stay convertibles.
I'm really confused. You know the 986 Boxster is not even close to the 987 cayman/ Boxster right?
You definitely are confused - They are basically the same chassis
What are you talking about?
Question. Carrera swap...got it...boxster swap...absolutely...why cayman? Do those motors suck too for those years? All.years?
There's a bearing that's supposed to make the timing chain last longer, which is dumb since timing chains are already known to be super reliable, well if that bearing goes then the whole engine is toast which is basically ironic. I don't know about these Boxster motors.
Chamo did it first!
Nice work there! Do you think this swap will impact the dynamics and the handling of the car?
I'm working on building a Suzuki carry k truck with a k swap and a boxster transaxle and suspension I'm wondering if this would work for me
