    Thanks. Very good video. You highlight a real problem with RUclips. I have a channel focusing on international politics. I deal with different topics each week. Sometimes, it could be Ukraine, at other times Africa, sometimes SE Asia, etc. The problem is that while a small core of my audience will be interested in all the topics I cover, a video on Ukraine won’t appeal to my viewers who like my stuff on West Africa. RUclips isn’t very good at differentiating. Often it will test a new video on Nigeria on my audience, but only a part of them will be interested in Nigeria. If the CTR is poor then it won’t push it more widely. A good video can be held back because YT makes an immediate decision on how it’s received by regular viewers who might not be the best audience. YT is good for the super specialist creators. It really does take a lot of work to succeed if you aren’t so narrowly focused. It is certainly possible, but I do think it is a lot harder.

    Is there a way to re-train the algorithm to look at an older channel with lots of videos differently than before, or is a mountain of past algorithm history going to essentially lock me into whatever conclusion the algorithm has come to about my channel already?

    14:46 I've noticed that long videos(1-2 hours) are getting views longer than videos 10-20 min long.
    I have a channel about Reddit stories. There are 500+ videos ranging from 10 min to 2 hours long. I stopped posting videos a few years ago, but the channel still gets 500k views every month.
    All of those views I got from 60+ min videos. All my 10-20 min videos died in the first 3-6 months, but the 1-2 hours videos have been getting views for years.
    The main reason is the huge WATCH HOURS per viewer.

    I think this is one of the most honest videos I have seen about this topic.
    The changes especially in the last year drive avg videos and great packaging more than ever.
    The problem is, what the audience defines as great packaging - which is where clickbait lurks around the corner again.
    Especially for me, who wants to keep doing "my style" and authentic stuff, it throws me off that my most successful videos are a) very random and follow none of these patterns (doh) and b) those I don´t really like because they were kinda low effort.
    One could think, ok cool, do more low effort and package them well. Thats also not hows working cause people will notice lol.
    Its a very very hard thing for medium sized channels atm just because you don´t want to lose youre identity, still want to explore new things and yet keep the fun. But YT drives me into doing more of the same to keep a minimum momentum at least.
    Checking the comments here also confirms the feeling, that many people feel the same way. Good content is not really rewarded anymore by default because youtube hits the fast money button to compete with tiktok.
    Still, there are ways to crack it, but at what cost.

  • @thenodiggardener

    Over the last few months RUclips has deliberately not pushed my content. I'm sick of people telling me that my content is at fault. My 'style' may not be everyone's cup of tea, but since absolutely NONE of those people criticising me actually went and watched my content, how would they know my content sucks. In actual fact, my regular subscribers are telling me they are not getting notified that I'm posting, that RUclips is un-subscibing them, and absolutely no-one can find my channel when searching for it. I've changed the things on my thumbnails I was originally criticised for, and yet all my older content is still doing so much better than my recent up-loads. A few videos back, one literally had less than 100 impressions for days, and most of those were probably from YT putting my own video on my own home page and suggestions. Another still has less than a 1000 out of millions in my niche. Perhaps if it went back to using the SEO we're all putting in to tell it exactly who to place our content with, instead of just throwing our content at random people as a wild guess, we'd all be doing so much better. After all, I don't know about everyone else, but I'm rather sick of my home page being filled of suggestions I have absolutely no interest in. Like the football and boxing YT spent the best part of last year trying to ram down my throat, despite the fact I hate both sports, and have never shown the slightest interest in either.

      Hey, I read your comment and checked out your channel. I have over 300 subscribers with just 5 videos on a 6weeks old channel. I’m not perfect, but I’ve learned a few things that could help you. Your thumbnails definitely need improvement. I think maybe you’re not good with things like editing and such. I can advise you to find someone who can create your thumbnails and edit your videos. Also, please note there was no intro in your video to tell me what the video is about or what I will learn. However, your content is good and unique. Just work on the thumbnails, video editing, and a clear intro. It doesn’t have to be super good, just decent. Your current editing and thumbnails are not very inviting.

    • @thenodiggardener
      @thenodiggardener 6 месяцев назад +6

      @@nelo737 Whilst I appreciate what you're saying, you may want to take note where I said I changed the things I was told I was getting wrong. Having an intro was one of them. Also, some of my best performing videos have the very worst thumbnails. I'm in the severe disability group, I don't have the finances to heat my home correctly, so I can't afford to pay someone to make thumbnails and edit for me. Unfortunately it just is what it is, and that shouldn't stop YT placing it in front of people in my niche.

      @@thenodiggardenerI have seen from your channel that you are very talented and i dont think your thumbnails are the problem, one thing i would say is that entertainment videos beats educational videos, IN MY OPINION because people tend to go on yt to because they want entertainment while if you need educational videos you need to search for it specifically ❤

    • @denalidtx
      @denalidtx 6 месяцев назад

      @thenodiggardener I can understand this frustration. I have a short that has fewer than 20 impressions after several months, while my others have thousands! (I'm leaving it alone to see what happens lol.)
      I did check out your channel, and found that searching for "@thenodiggardener" finds you, but anything without the @ doesn't. It seems like "no dig gardener" is a common enough term that it's finding larger channels first. So it's a good name, but possibly working against a small channel.
      For your subs who aren't getting notified, you might remind them that the subscribe button now has a drop-down that lets you select "All" notifications instead of the default "Personalized". I think this was changed a few months back, but I'm not sure exactly when.
      I watched your recent potato video, too. The video was very informative, but you're right in saying that your style isn't for everyone. You sound knowledgeable, and the video sounds very conversational rather than scripted. That's good, but viewers (especially younger) may lose focus without a clear flow from start to finish. Showing the result up front and then showing the process to get there might help.
      Honestly, I think the packaging needs work. If you search for "grow potatoes in a bucket" or "grow potatoes on the patio", you'll see thumbnails with clear text, images featuring potatoes, or both. That's what you're competing with, so it's worth looking. I found it quite difficult to read the text on your thumbnails (even with the stroke that you added), and the potatoes are lost among the greenery. Maybe viewers in your niche don't care as much, but that's what stood out.

    Im curious your thoughts...I get about a million views a month, 88% from shorts and 12% from longform. The thing is...its the same. I edit my videos in a way where its almost soundbite by soundbite, so each soundbite becomes a reel and the longform lives just as that. I.e., two ways to share the same exact content to two separate audiences.
    But im concerned that my shorts might be preventing my longform videos from reaching full potential. Should I turn my current channel into reels only and then start a fresh channel with just my longform videos? The quality of what im doing and focus is 500% more than when I started. Id be intersted to hear your thoughts. 😊

    I have noticed a change since 2024 - in the past I’ve always gone with “best for viewer” because it historically seemed to send people to the person’s channel. Now it seems to send them anywhere. I’ve noticed this while even watching big creators (of course not knowing for certain of the rec at the end was the best-for-viewer or something that person hand picked from another creator; seems unlikely that would be the case though). I mention this here because it would be in line with YT still trying to emulate tt.

    What I don't understand is how such a clearly sophisticated algorithm can seem so...dumb? I run a small channel for which the ideal demo is COMPLETELY obvious to me, a human. Yet the algo refuses to show the content to those people. It's so frustrating

    • @SparkY0
      @SparkY0 6 месяцев назад +1

      Because the algorithm is based on old code, and probably is not actually all that sophisticated.
      It would be very, very hard to make a computer accurately subdivide 2 billion people into the literal infinite number of sub-niches that exist.
      But it's like 2004 era code to split people into wide ballparks based on basic demographics like location/time of day/age/ etc. and let audiences behave based on their own self-interest.
      Odds are the reality is somewhere in between, but leaning heavily toward the "Easy" way. An accurate recommendation likely costs more in computer time than they would make from the ad click. So they're going to try and get enough people a clickable-enough recommendation in the simplest way possible, by putting them into the smallest number of buckets possible.
      A user profile probably a bit more complicated that "a [gender] person of [age] years old located in [city] who usually watches [music] and [education] videos and engages with [artist] and [company] and [some other common keywords]" ... but not much.
      Go start a RUclips ad campaign and look at how specifically you can target the ad. The video recommendation demographics are likely very close to that, if not identical. If RUclips was able to target a video in an extremely specific way, then they would be letting companies pay them to do this as well.
      And companies can target ads pretty specifically... but in reasonable ways.
      I guess you can download all your user data from Google. Maybe there's a way to check the real, specific demographics RUclips attaches to you as a user.
      That's the recommendations algorithm, there's also the search algorithm. There's more than one algorithm. Search is much more focused on keywords and phrases tagging the video itself. What's really frustrating, is that as a creator you still have little to no control or even visibility into what keywords get associated with your video in the first place -as tags do nearly nothing. It's clear the video transcript is a much bigger priority than the description - and keywords overall seem to matter less and less when the video gets big enough. What people overlook though, is comments. I think the content of comments are a very significant factor in how YT search figures out what the video is about. I'm seeing better long-term recommendations from videos with a few good/relevant comments/questions than videos that got a higher number of generic "Good video" comments.
      Bu then again, I have very little respect for the algorithm, and the people YT brings out to do PR about the algorithm seem to describe things in a counter intuitive way, with no proof why they think the end results should be outputting roughly the exact opposite outcome that small channels are experiencing.
      I think the real reason that niching down works I think is far more boring: First, audiences like what they like, and need consistency. Second, a smaller niche means less competing videos (especially from big players who will absolutely crush you).
      Or it could all be an illusion. Humans are excellent at making up patterns where none exist.

    • @--Avi--
      @--Avi-- 5 месяцев назад

      Probably reach out to other creators in your new niche to do a collab. You do a fun video that's published on their channel, featuring you, and they do a fun one that's published on your channel, featuring them. Their viewers may then check out your older vids in that niche. This sudden influx of viewership could cause the algorithm to think this video is doing well with these kinds of viewers, which will then push your next video to those viewers, too. That's all conjecture, and I have no experience in this field, but it's just an idea that might help! Other than that, maybe advertise your videos in groups that follow that demographic to drive up traffic.

    This was so helpful. My channel blew up this month (meaning like 3k subs to almost 11k as I’m writing this) and this video helped me come to terms with the content that will appeal to my audience. I made so many videos private to make sure the theme is a lot more focused. Thanks again 🎉🎉🎉

    I figured out RUclips promotes my videos to people named Franklin who's birthday is October 15th and they were born before noon, in a rural hospital with less than 6 parking spots for ambulances.
    After figuring this out, I adjusted my videos and I'm happy to report I'm getting almost 200 views. Not bad.... tHanks for the fun video!

    What you mentioned about the RUclips boom ( or whatever you called it lol) is true. What’s funny about n8wealth is that we created our channels only a few days apart. I remember getting recommended his first and only video at the time and it had less than a thousand views. I had only posted one video and it took off like crazy. The thing I got to realise about RUclips last year is that they would push your videos In the first hour then after that your views would tank, completely. I think what they were doing worked because I think they just wanted to give people hope that they’ve got something going on.
    I posted over 150 videos in less than 2 months all because of that one video. During the first month, my videos would get on average a thousand views in less than 5 minutes but they became stagnant till eternity.

    New channel boost doles out false hope. High impressions and views tells me that I'm doing something right and should continue. So I do. But then views fall off the cliff.
    I appreciate the boost, but I think I'd rather actually know if what I'm doing will gain traction organically before investing more time and effort into the concept. Thanks for the vid.

    I just had a boost period: for a month, my stats were multiplied by 4 or 5. I went from 150 subscribers per month to 500/month. And after exactly a month, I returned to my previous stats.
    I thought I had done well, and my channel was finally taking off, but it was artificial. Psychologically, I don't find it encouraging at all, personally it rather demotivated me. :(
