I'm from Argentina...I'm 56 years old and the first time I heard him I was 14...I love his music...it's said that music is harmony, melody and rhythm...well, he has it all❤
Mark Knopfler is my hero. I truly LOVE his music, guitar playing, songwriting, story telling. The feel and emotion behind his playing is magical, to me. Heard the music of Dire Straits in ‘78 and fell in love with it all. At 62 years young, I’m watching videos of Mark on YT doing whatever. Grateful that there’s so much stuff to learn more about him. I saw Dire Straits in the Boston area, March of 1992. I dropped off a card and letter to his hotel explaining multiple surgical issues with both hands (I play guitar), leaving my wrists totally fused and asked if he would consider signing my guitar. The concert was one I’ll never forget! 31 years ago…..where has time gone??? His music has ALWAYS touched my heart and I never tire of it. There’s so much to love and enjoy. Two nights after the concert I received a call…..from Mark himself. 💃🏼😳 At 31 yrs old, I should’ve been calm, cool and collected after hearing who was calling…..but, I was shocked and remember saying OMG a few times. Mark was so gracious and offered to meet me at ‘quarter till 11’ the next morning!! He was everything you’d expect. So VERY kind and concerned. We talked a bit about me trying the keyboard given the inability to move my wrists. He happily signed my white 1988 Gibson ES-335 showcase edition (200 made). I’ll never forget that day as it’s etched in my heart. So very grateful to him. Peace, love & prayers to all, Denise from MA
The guitar tone, the phrasing, the fingerpicking, the incredible melodious lines...it's all of these things that make Mark Knopfler one of the greatest guitar players of our time, and a superb singer/songwriter as well.
Sadly, too much undistinguished and lackluster "music" has assumed dominance while truly good songs have become a distinct minority and largely ignored by the mass audience.
because its honest ,, its a principle our corporate overlords do not like to promote .. Mark said he did not want to be famous when he had so much sucsess with dire straights he just wanted to play music and meed other musicians to play with . its fucking beautiful
The mans a credit to British music. One of the last living legendary rockers. Maybe it's just me but do you ever hear a guitar style and just know who it is? Gilmour, Knopfler etc are just instantly recognizable, nobody cares if you can shred at 100mhp, try playing with the class and simplicity knopfler does and make it sound so exquisite. Unreal talent.
Mark Knophler must have an amazing memory. His music is very lyrical, wordy and not repetitive like most artists. He has to remember the lyrics and all of those notes on his guitar for each of his songs. Amazing artist.
Minor observation: always loved Mark's singing (ignoring his guitar mastery and songwriting talent for the moment). Always understated, sober - no grandstanding, just delivers the vocals in a steady, melancholy tone that really amps up the lyrics. A big part of his sound and the attraction of his songs. Keep on, Mr. K.

One thing I just noticed about this song is that, with its' catchy tune and upbeat first lyrics, you think it's going to be just a simple little tune, but by the time you get to the last verse, it's turned really dark. Mark, among all the other things he excels at, is an epic poet. There's just so much behind the lyrics that you can sense, and the fact that the tune is so catchy is sublime. What a genius!
Tremendously incisive and insightful lyrics. Reminds me of that little gem of truth in "Ride Across The River" (at 3:30):- "the right become the wrong, the left become the right . . . . "
@Alexis Langdon....He's such an Americana buff, he no doubt knows more about our country than most of its' citizens. Song for Sonny List on: how he tells that story. Everyone's got a story. Mark Knopfler knows how to tell it.
Another crime of the century.. Mark was voted 27 place.. By think was rolling stone.. As 27th best guitarists in rock n roll.... In my opinion ( for what it's worth) he most definitely among the top ten... If not among the top five... Its unmistakable.. From the very first noise you hear when that guitar is plucked....you know who it can only be..
This is a criminally underrated song. A dark epic about a fast food giant that's also a hauntingly beautiful earworm? Just another day for Knophler and crew...
@@Alien-ks9tj Yeah, the "Ray" in the song is Ray Kroc, the founder of McDonalds. This song is basically a summary of how he stole the company and ruined the original owners.

Impossible to match anywhere else on this planet. No one and I mean no one can make a guitar sound like this. A timeless band which never fails to raise my spirit to great heights!
Notice how Mark respects his guitar. He never competes with it. When Mark sings, then the guitar is in the background and when the guitar plays, then Mark is silent. He treats the guitar as a bandmember with whom he sings duets.
I had the meaning of the lyrics wrong it seems. I thought he was cleverly juxtapositioning the fast food industry with the (then) new deadly drug Krocodil and comparing a Burger place with a drugs house ! Doh !
Mark Knopfler is a play writer, who would give Shakespeare a run for his money. Did Will play an instrument? I don't know. The cinematography is also inspired. It's fun to watch musicians have fun, and we can imagine being there. Real sweet 😄
I discovered Mark Knopfler's work at a stage in life -- when I am going through a series of crises. Call it a quarter-life-crisis if you'd like.
