He's matured, stays relevant, and always tells great stories with his songs. There are a lot of great musicians, but he's the go to guy, has written about every subject, always interesting, consistently spellbinding.

My dear, late cousin and best friend, and I reconnected about 7 years ago on FB. It'd been years since we''d seen each other because of family deaths, divorces, etc. Anyway, we were finally going to get together for the first time in 2019 and attend Mark's concert. I can't tell you how excited I was -- both to spend time w/ my dear cousin and to see Mark, Richard, Guy, Danny, etc. on stage. But Susan had to keep reassuring me that Mark wasn't going to die before that -- I was just sure that something would go wrong! But nothing went wrong, and it was glorious! So grateful for that time my cousin and I spent together -- along with our favorite musician. I miss you, Susie! ❤❤🎸🎸

I discovered J.J. Cale through reading a Dire Straits biography - allegedly Mark met John Illsley when John was working at a record store, and Mark was looking for a Cale track that he’d heard where the guitarist did something cool. John (so the book claimed, I never know how much of this is made up) handed Mark a guitar he had been doodling on and asked him to demonstrate. The rest, as they say… Aaaanyway - I spent 40 years since listening to both Mark and J.J. and at some early point was a bit indignant - sometimes it aounded to me like my great hero Knopfler had just imitated this guy. Which is nonsense of course. Just like he did with Chet Atkins, Mark listened, learnt, and used it all to grow his own thing.
Nowadays I hear the J.J.-adjacent tracks, and feel blessed to have such musicians in this world (well, one of them no longer alive, but well recorded). I can close my eyes, and not care who is playing - just feel the goosebumps coming up because of the magic that was caught and bottled!

I clearly remember the first time I heard Sultans of Swing. I was in my brother's shop working on my car. I was listening to a local rock station, KZEL 96.1, out of Eugene, Or., when the dj announced a new early-release single they had just got in and claimed that this would be the first time it was heard on the west coast. Guess he knew he had his hands on something special. I dropped whatever I was doing and just listened. Mesmerized. I bought the album the first chance I got... and then I got to hear it on hi-fi. Wow.
I have been with Dire Straits and Mark ever since. I particularly enjoy his work with Emmylou, another idol of mine. I will own this new album as soon as I can get it.

I was 19 when I first heard Sultans of Swing. I had just joined the Territorial Army and was halfway through basic training. I was Artillery so it as Woolwich Barracks and we were let out into London Town. It was just a pleasure not to walk in pace (I had to consciously watch this) and towards the end of the night (well served with booze) I heard this and it really struck a chord. I'm from Marks neck of the woods, in fact my gun battery was based in Blyth, where MK grew up for a few years, strange how music puts bookmarks on your life.

We got the roller coaster piling along
The power and the glory with the song
Holy moly, where did the time go?
I told you, baby, now you know
I'm keeping the balls in the air
When I'm up here on the band
There'll be a little bit here and there
    Still be trying to understand
But they'll all be in the air
When I'm up here on the band
What it is, I'm juggling here
I've only got two pairs of hands
    There's a pin-drop, they follow a thread
And a lone voice cries out overhead
When the thunder bursts in the velvet night
There's joy and wonder and delight
I'm keeping the balls in the air
Tryna keep up with the band
There'll be a little bit here and there
I might get covered by the drifting sand
But they'll all be in the air
When I'm up here on the band
What it is, I'm juggling here
I've only got two pairs of hands
They're back in the streets and into the bars
The trams and the trains and back in their cars
Holy moly, where did the time go?
I told you, baby, now you know
I'm keeping the balls in the air
Tryna keep up with the band
There'll be a little bit here and there
