Dear Mark, 44 years ago I fell in love with the boy who introduced to me the new /then/ album Communiqué. We got married, because of it. Our son Mark was named after you. Your music was and will always be part of our life.
Found this on RUclips, pulled out my Gresch 6120 and played along with it after about ten minutes. Only four chords in it, E minor scale. He's a past master of making simplicity sound brilliant. He works off of strong melodys, that's his greatest gift.
From Sultans in 78 when I first heard him as a 17 y/o, till now with 63 getting close I can't think of anyone I'd rather listen to. He's matured, stays relevant, and always tells great stories with his songs. There are a lot of great musicians, but he's the go to guy, has written about every subject, always interesting, consistently spellbinding.
For my money, he's as great a songwriter as anyone in history. Most musicians would rest on their laurels if they composed "money for nothing" and "Romeo and Juliet". He just turns out one brilliant song after another, he's the background music to our lives.
Am I alone in feeling my blood pressure go down a few points when I hear Mark Knopfler play? Mellow, but not at all boring. Masters at work.....no flash required.
It's always refreshing to hear straight up rock n roll still being released these days. It's hard to get that timeless feel in today's music. I listen to a lot of new music, but I don't find much that seems like it's going to be played for decades to come.
Born in ‘72, grown with Dire Straits and MK’s music. Can say I’m a lucky man. My son is 19 and also a big fan. Wish i could stop the time so Mark would stay with us forever❤
Born in the year of '74. I was introduced to Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler on the MTV. That's the way you do it. I will be pushing 50 this May. I feel as though modern music seems hollow and disposable. Maybe it is a generational thing. I wish to be entertained with less plastic style and more heavy substance these daze.
My dear, late cousin and best friend, and I reconnected about 7 years ago on FB. It'd been years since we''d seen each other because of family deaths, divorces, etc. Anyway, we were finally going to get together for the first time in 2019 and attend Mark's concert. I can't tell you how excited I was -- both to spend time w/ my dear cousin and to see Mark, Richard, Guy, Danny, etc. on stage. But Susan had to keep reassuring me that Mark wasn't going to die before that -- I was just sure that something would go wrong! But nothing went wrong, and it was glorious! So grateful for that time my cousin and I spent together -- along with our favorite musician. I miss you, Susie! ❤❤🎸🎸
I discovered J.J. Cale through reading a Dire Straits biography - allegedly Mark met John Illsley when John was working at a record store, and Mark was looking for a Cale track that he’d heard where the guitarist did something cool. John (so the book claimed, I never know how much of this is made up) handed Mark a guitar he had been doodling on and asked him to demonstrate. The rest, as they say… Aaaanyway - I spent 40 years since listening to both Mark and J.J. and at some early point was a bit indignant - sometimes it aounded to me like my great hero Knopfler had just imitated this guy. Which is nonsense of course. Just like he did with Chet Atkins, Mark listened, learnt, and used it all to grow his own thing. Nowadays I hear the J.J.-adjacent tracks, and feel blessed to have such musicians in this world (well, one of them no longer alive, but well recorded). I can close my eyes, and not care who is playing - just feel the goosebumps coming up because of the magic that was caught and bottled!
