  • Roadside Attraction is arguably the most polarizing Gravity Falls episode. One reason is the why the gang would take a roadtrip right after the Mystery Shack has been Bill proofed? It's a question that has alluded fans for years now!
But within Journal 3 lies one retcon quote, that changes it all and makes GF's most controversial episode, likely the brainchild of one of its most beloved or hated characters...depending on how into the fandom you are, lol.
This is the Roadside Attraction Retcon!

Thank you so much for the support and love on this video. Been a bit rough with all the UMG blocks that I've been dealing with but seeing this video do well makes me so happy. I have some really exciting projects coming soon on the channel that I hope you all will stick around to see. 2024, now with the Book of Bill coming, is shaping up to be a very fun year for Gravity Falls. Even if UMG's greedy ass is wiping away all GF music off RUclips, the fandom lives on in the face of their stupidity!

I think your theory is accurate, it seems to make the most sense for Ford to just make the shack a temporary refuge for himself while his family is safe and away

  • @Joe-rz3fd

If you remember, Ford was amazed when Bill told him that he couldn't escape Gravity Falls. Sure, he did understand Gravity Falls's natural law of weirdness magnetism (as he illustrated to Dipper with the jellybeans), but he seemed genuinely shocked that Bill couldn't escape Gravity Falls. So if this theory is correct, it means that Ford had

  • @FlameHeart3063

Could we also make the assumption that: if bill had been released withing the shack, he'd be stuck in there for eternity without being able to break the barrier? Breaking the rift made bill reform directly on the spot. So would breaking it in the shack release him inside it? Maybe not, but I thought that's where you were going before I finished the video lol

  • @ashlingcashling2474

There's also the idea that Ford wanted to avoid using the zodiac at all costs. Bill says himself that every threat to his power was brought together "in one easy to destroy circle". Ford probably thought of this weak point beforehand and tried to send a few of the zodiac members away just in case. It kind of puts into perspective just how stubborn he was to listen to the prophecies he received (from both the witch and from the cave paintings), and how his suggestion of it at the very end was literally the last thing he could think to do. Makes me all the more curious what the zodiac would have done! Hopefully we'll get more insight in The Book of Bill.

  • @ThatGFFAN

Have a safe and merry Christmas to all who celebrate or just off from classes like me, lol.

  • @jaredcook4414

Additional idea: sending his family out of town while the rift was damaged and vulnerable also meant less people to venture outside while he tried to fix it and then get unwittingly possessed by Bill to kick off Weirdmageddon

  • @hauntedhatstudios9502

I fell like its more of a "The world is about to end, so do what you've always wanted to do while you can" situation, especially considering Stan was yapping about it a lot, and it was only until Ford noticed the rift start to crack that he allowed it

  • @jacobadams9876

I don’t think Ford knew that Bill would be trapped within Gravity Falls. He never mentioned it to Dipper or anyone else even though it would be valuable information; in fact the way he talked about Bill escaping made it seem like it would be instant game over for the whole universe. He even seemed surprised at first when Bill told him he couldn’t leave the town.

  • @emeraldpichu1

It’s a cute reference, but it doesn’t work in practical terms because 90% of the fan base isn’t going to interact with the book, making it just a gaping plothole for everyone else

  • @ItzYaGirlSophie

We all know he let them go so he could have the whole house to himself and dance to smash mouth, madonna and 80s rock songs

  • @jstarwars360

In the episode commentary track, Alex says that the episode was purposefully light so the crew could focus their attention on the remaining episodes of the series.

I knew when this episode aired that it took place after NWHS.

  • @jacky-rubou

it's a good theory regardless of the potential debunking. He probably didn't want them near while he figured out a solution in case he accidentally breaks the rift, until he realized the solution was at Crash Site Omega and he needed/wanted Dipper's help. I doubt he was 'just' writing during the multiple days they were likely gone. like maybe he did tests on it or something. idk, I like this explanation a lot.

  • @craycraywolf6726

I really like this theory! And as another person mentioned, perhaps Ford just realized/decided close to the end of the episode that he needed Dipper.

  • @tomisgood

Personally I love this episode. I appreciate the different feel this episode has, even with its placement. It really solidified that "summer in your youth" vibe that the show has for it, and bring some closure to Dippers personal arcs, and I like the Stan and Dipper scenes.

  • @sebay4654

I think it can be reasonably presumed that the barrier around the shack operates both ways so he would try to figure out a way to permanently seal the rift within the shack and even if he released bill on accident he's in a situation where there is two barriers protecting his family and he has the tools needed at least in his mind(quantum destablizer) to try to fight bill whilst hes under two layers barriers between him and the outsider world first containing him in the shack and then if that fails hes still contained in gravity falls

  • @CageBlack1443

I liked the placement, personally. Mostly because it's the last episode right before everything goes to sh*t, and instead of preparing for the apocalypse, we get one last monster of the week episode, one last Season 1-esc episode, with no Ford, and no Bill, right before Weirdmaggedon. It's like, "Hey, here's why you got into the show. Over the next four episodes, we will be wrapping up, so have this before we do that!"

  • @starlightmoonstone1260

The two issues I have with this theory are:
