Instruments are not a big part of getting the CRCST. You will learn some, however, the majority are learned on the job. If you want to get a head start on a good portion of the basic instruments, I have instrument flashcards here: thesterileguy.com/products/surgical-instrument-flashcards As far as the externship, what Preppy has noticed is a lot of "externships" they go to p[lace actually turn into a job instead. Even with externship training, most hospitals will "retrain" you once hired to ensure you know how to do everything and are familiar with their specific equipment etc. So chances are your externship could be a job instead depending on your geographical area.
I would say the majority of hospitals require it, however, it is different state to state and hard to know for sure. You can always ask the hospitals policy or it might even be stated in the job announcement.
Yes. All the CRCST materials I sell are created to align specifically with the HSPA 9th edition manual which is what the new exam is based from. Completely up to date.
Not dumb at all. Sterile Processing doesn’t have licensing, just certification. And you can get certified through any of the 2 organizations that offer it which is Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA) or Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD). The HSPA calls their basic certification the CRCST which stands for Certified Registered Central Service Technician. I personally recommend this one through HSPA because they are the best.
Only cons would be if you have trouble learning outside a classroom and/or if you have difficulty in motivating yourself to complete the work. But to be honest, if someone has difficulty motivating themselves to do the work, they probably won’t do well in Sterile Processing anyways.
Yes. The only two certifying agencies are HSPA and CBSPD and neither require specific training except a documented 400 hours under specific duties if you go for the full CRCST.
@@thesterileguy sorry last question, do you have any idea if the surgical tech program works well for those states? Tysm for your replies you're the only informed person that seems to reply.
@@sirensorceress93 Little bit tricky but here goes: CA has no accrediting issues. CT does currently, though there may be a loophole since their legislation also states "any other program" approved by department of health which could be more options. Most sterile processing departments have moved away from using toxic chemicals outside of automated machines that keep everything contained. If handling any chemicals it is very important to always use PPE. As far as skin burns, if chemical that would be from failing to use proper PPE, if from a steam sterilizer that would also be from failing to use PPE.
