I do find it interesting most of the time in modern media about female emancipation from societal bounds generally depict it in a wholly positive and affirming manner where as media about male emancipation from social constraints is generally depicted to be negative and self destructive. When Utena fights for freedom she is celebrated where as when Eren Yager fights for freedom he goes insane.

That's definitely an interesting observation. Adding on to that any time I think of what would be construed as a positive male emancipation case, it's usually induced by a woman: Harold and Maude, Aunt Mamie and What's Up, Doc.

@@lonelyboyadventurer1033 There is also my observation how each type of media treats maturity, when a male character rebels it is seen as rejecting his maturing into a man and the responsibility that it comes with, they are cast negatively whereas it seen as a positive when a female wants to remain perpetual girl and frowned upon the very concept of womanhood.

this was an interesting piece, the strong points that you showed here are things I appreciate too. nothing's wrong with letting scenes breath in a series nor with using diff perspectives or subtle symbolism etc. it allows a viewer to have more to take in when watching an anime as dialog only scenes aren't the only ways to learn about a character or its world/location in general. I haven't seen this series, admittedly lol, & I have other stuff currently i wanna finish but I'll consider this 1 some day. this deserves way more views & likes tbh, be it a 4yrs old vid or not lol. dope insight as always

I find your comment a refreshing blast from the past, as even though I wrote this video it's one I rarely ever think about since I made it so long ago ... back when I planned to upload content weekly. Definitely a bit rough around the edges or at least by my current standard, either way despite its age I'm glad you could find value in this video and that it roused interest in the series for you.

One thing I always found funny about this show's fandom is that they celebrate it as yuri despite that clearly not being its focus. The movie, I'll agree, sure. The show, though? I always found it kind of a stretch. Yuri elements, sure, like with Juri, but overall I feel that the show is more focused on the psychology of the characters, as you emphasized, rather than who they're paired with. I bring this up because that's how I first discovered this show, going in for the supposed yuri that was hyped up by the fans at large. Utena and Anthy had more 'bonding' with Akio than each other. Yet, that's seldom talked about. Even if it's integral to Anthy as a person. Overall, I came out loving all aspects of the show covered in your video. I wish most of its fanbase could see the merit beyond their apparent headcanons. The brilliant shots and animation alone warrant rewatches to become tradition. The characters themselves are a whole treasure chest of bonuses on top of that.

I know this may sound funny, but I borderline rewatched Utena just to look at its astounding imagery without paying attention to the story or plot. I've responded to other comments on this video with a similar response to this, but I'm always happy to read that someone enjoyed this video, since because it happens to be one of my first uploads it rarely ever gets views.
