      Sometimes one becomes half because of war and were conceived through rape rather than sex - that there is the taint of the enemy in innocent children. In Inuyasha, there were demons who saw humans more like hamburgers and chicken strips than as fellow beings - so humans saw half demons as being tainted by the enemy rather than as fellow beings.
      Shippo was a full demon but he was not the enemy.

      Forget that, remember how Rumiko casually brought up Dissociative Identity Disorder with Suikotsu? That was such a well-written portion and a realistic usage of the disorder as a fictional element. It didn't feel as cringey as other DID portrayals in fiction. I also love how everyone in the Feudal Era were completely freaked out by what was happening to him and Kagome was the only one who vaguely understood because she had knowledge regarding the disorder from her era.
      Also the jewel became "pure" when he was the doctor and "impure" when he was a villain. This perfectly corresponds to the pathophysiology of DID; when a different alter is in control, a portion of the patient's brain is suddenly "active" while the ones that control other alters are "inactive". This pretty much implies that the brain has compartmentalized itself in such a way that each alter is their own person; with their own skill sets, personality and moral conscience. It makes perfect sense for the jewel to react differently towards different alters corresponding to what their moral consciences dictate.

      @Vaudree Lavallee
      I'm definitely curious about it, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't at least a little apprehensive. A few of my other favorite anime received decades later sequels that let's just say didn't comprehend why their predecessor earned a sequel in the first place.

    • @vaudreelavallee3757
      @vaudreelavallee3757 4 года назад +2

      @@lonelyboyadventurer1033 - yeah, I heard about Borutu and the recent remake of Reboot was not worth watching - in the latter case, it was definitely because the original minds were not involved in the project. What gives me hope with Yashahime is that the original creator is involved and the actor who did the English voice for Inuyasha is still alive.
      I like the concept that it is about three girls whose connection to their past had been severed to varying degrees and in very different ways. Reading between the lines, the connections were all severed when they were four and we see them 10 years later after they have led very different lives. The set-up also allows for a bit of backstory concerning characters in the original series. Even if it is sup-par that alone would make it worth watching.
      Despite your apprehension, I am looking forward to your theories after each new revelation comes out.
      My interest is in what allowed one girl through and then closed the porthole in the well - and what allowed it to open up again? Some people say that the porthole this time was through the tree and not the well - but the well was made from branches of the tree so, for all practical purposes, same thing. This leads me to think that there are potentially those other than Kagome and Inuyasha who can go through the well leading to the need to close it off temporarily.
      Question: Is there a known incidence of either a full demon or a human without powers going through the porthole in the well? A logical spell would be to close the porthole in the well so that it closes up for a specific period of time after the next person goes through it to prevent an evil half demon or priestess from going through it. I doubt that the person casting the spell planned to do it for 10 years - maybe they sneezed or were injured impacting the incantation.
      Sesshomaru saw his own superiority to Inuyasha in being both the first born and a full demon. Ergo, he would necessarily put a greater importance in finding Towa over looking after Setsuna.
      On the other hand, Inuyasha and Kagome would not be looking for Moroha if someone saw her jump in the well - even if, by that time, it was just a well.
      All we know so far seems to centre on the working of that well.
      The other thing is Kaede - in the original series, we only know her as a young girl and an old woman. Someone says it is cannon that she had no children. However, after 50 years, her grandchildren could have been married with children and her husband long dead by the time Kagome came through that well. Only her role as a priestess and connection to Kikyo was explored during the original series.

      @@vaudreelavallee3757 The first episode had Lady Centipede come through pulling Kagome into the feudal era for the first time. I think the reason Kagome could go through if I remember correctly is because she had the Shikon Jewel. I think that’s also how she was trapped in the modern era at one point. The Jewel shard was taken from her. I think she was able to somehow use the Sacred Tree as another portal since the tree existed in both worlds. I don’t remember how all that worked though. I think the characters were the ones that intentionally closed off the well once the series ended.

    My understanding of Sesshomaru's character arc is that, he goes from seriously trying to kill Inuyasha and hating him because he's part human and ignorant. To respecting him and protecting him.
    Their fights go from serious to kinda playful. I believe that he's kinda training him in these fights, but yeah he is also Protective of him. But he always protects him in a way where it looks like he's not, and or plays it off as he's being selfish or by saying that he's going to kill him and not whoever is trying.
    But he always stays in character. He's never going to admit that he loves Inuyasha and actively looks out for him. He's never going to admit that he loves Rin either. Even though that one is a lot more obvious. Since most people watch this anime and say that they just kinda tolerate each even though I and many others see a lot more.
    That's probably why he's the fan favorite, is because he's so full of shit. He's a badass with a soft side, but he has layers when it comes to that. He doesn't just go from Villain to Anti hero, and he doesn't just go from hating to loving his little brother. Well he does, but they don't beat you over the head with it and a lot of it is up to interpretation.

    Inuyasha is my top 10 favorite. Rumiko took a relatively small cast, each with there benefits and flaws, and mashed them up into a great team. Each character was very enjoyable, good depth and backstory. Especially the chemistry amongst them.
    The weapons and powers weren’t so overdone but very unique. Miroku’s wind tunnel, Sango’s Hiraikotsu, Kagome’s priestess-like powers, and Inuyasha’s Tetsuaiga. The Tetsuaiga was a unique weapon with all its different forms, so it didn’t feel like a rip off of anything.
    The Villains were great. Naraku was written to be so hated and always managed to survive. Kagura’s deceptiveness Naraku while still following orders made her own story compelling. Bankotsu was the coolest villain in anime to me. Sesshomaru went from a bad guy to an anti-hero and it was done organically and not just one fluid motion.
    Inuyasha’s music is fantastic and visually well done. Very memorable too
    What also makes Inuyasha great is it’s consistency and simplicity. Inuyasha never tried to be like DBZ or Naruto, so sometimes it won’t be the most exiting anime. Inuyasha really did the small things to near perfection. And since it does grow all the characters, they all felt important from the beginning to the end. The chemistry great, the music, and it has good villains and all that, it it’s a great anime. I find it underrated, but it’s a great one nonetheless. Rumiko knew what she wanted and executed it all very well.

    Wow, what a great review! I like how you compared Inuyasha to other anime and what made the show stand out from the rest. Honestly, it's the only anime series that I've managed to watch to its entirety. There are some anime that I've never bothered to for some odd reason maybe it had to do with some of the things you've mentioned who use the same old story tropes in an anime genre like Inuyasha. What really stood out to me about Inuyasha the first time I watched it was the way the characters were written and why they worked so well in the story. I liked how Kagome is portrayed as this typical teenage girl who's completely naïve and innocent, helpless... and she comes across Inuyasha who's not your typical "hero" more like anti-hero which is something fresh to see in an anime at that time. I also enjoyed the characters of Shippo, Miroku, and Sango, who helped make the team more exciting to watch. But I like the fact that the story was sort of told from a 1st person perspective with Kagome who travels thru time where she meets this half-demon and just the fact that it's told from that angle makes you relate to the character especially when you're at that age when you want to escape from reality (ie: school life, etc. lol)

    Man, what an intelligent video - great!
    As an InuYasha fan myself, I'm glad to hear actually good criticism about this series once in a while. You hear so damn little of that on the internet, that I clicked on your video, thinking the title was ironic. That's really sad.
    But that's a mere sidenote. Mainly I want to praise all the good and deep thoughts you had mentioned in this video!
    You seem to have this healthy view on all things media, by not looking for great plot twists, omega character arcs or deep background stories, but the deeper meanings stories told hold to the human life. Those little things you mentioned, like Kagome bringing toys 'n' stuff along for little Shippou or InuYasha's sleeping habits; are being overlooked often in many reviews, as if it would be nothing of interest.
    You had me right in the beginning, where you said, Takahashi was kinda breaking the norm with her series - I never thought of it in that particular way. Or later on, you saying it is a good thing, that this series doesn't have typical training arcs; your view on filler episodes and your points on the deathly sins - so much interesting stuff, and a rarity on the internet (or at least my personal filter bubble ;D).
    Hopefully you can understand what I am trying to say in my kinda broken english. I just really appreciate your way of thinking.
    I appreciate those interesting and very mature perspectives you give, and of course the whole effort you spend into creating this video. I could listen to you for hours - keep up the great work!
    Best regards
    A new fellow subscriber ;)

      I'm grateful for the praise you have given me and I'm happy to have found an audience that can appreciate my work. Too often I find that most other analyses slash reviews are just simple summaries of the plot, so in mine I try to extrapolate something greater.
      I appreciate the sub, and by the way let me just say you have absolutely nothing to worry about with your English, in all honesty you communicate better than most native speakers.

      I also like, how you jump directly into the topic without the whole "InuYasha is a manga series made by the very popular mangaka Rumiko Takahashi aka the "Queen of Manga". It was published in 1996 in the magazine ..." - you know the stick. It is kinda refreshing to skip the all too known facts and just start with the good stuff ^^
      Aww, really? Thank you so much!
      I kinda struggle with the wording all the time - especially how to tackle those deep more psychological thoughts, you know? -, I know what I want to convey, but than I write, and I write and than I fear to have lost myself in some weird sentense structures and false time versions. Back in school I wasn't the fittest either; so I'm more than relieved to hear that. Thanks a lot =)

    I love this so much, I love that you made this. Inuyasha is one of my all-time favs, but I think I personally enjoy Ranma a bit more. Anyway, I've read most of Takahashi-sensei's works and watched the adaptations, usually multiple times hahah and honestly I could sit down and write a whole thesis about her charachters, about the symbolism, about the historical and cultural references etc... her work is amazing and I'm so glad others see it too. I studied japanese studies and literature in uni and then rewatched Inuyasha as a 25yo adult and it was even better than when I watched as a kid or as a teen, as I understood it in a different way and I could actually sit down and analyse it... its so much more than your typical adventure anime. Thank you for making this. I appreciate you mentioned the filler thing, I've heard that complaint too and every time I just have the impression that the people saying this watched the show all wrong lol if thats even possible. I once heard someone complain Ranma has too many fillers and I just started laughing bc the show is almost identical to the manga and is basically entirely made out of nothing but "fillers" and it always made me wonder why people are expecting these shows to be something they aren't.

    • @lonelyboyadventurer1033
      @lonelyboyadventurer1033  4 года назад +1

      Glad you appreciated my video. I've basically watched all the anime adaptations of her work too, minus a few 1 episode OVAs. In regards to filler content (In general, not just Inuyasha) I believe the majority criticism against filler is usually an offshoot of the "The book is better than the movie" argument, basically a phrase people say to create an illusion that they're smarter than they actually are, now I'm not implying all cases of filler to be great or even good I just believe many people use that argument without even reflecting if it meshes well with the canon material or not. Hopefully I didn't get too wordy, it's just that your Ranma story substantiated both my claims, so I felt a little compelled to say it.

      @teodoravlad9368 4 года назад +1

      @@lonelyboyadventurer1033 not at all, I appreciate your reply! we are on the same page here, the are cases where fillers can get a bit too much and the criticism is valid but in the cases where it doesn't mess up the original story and flows so well with it, this complaint is pointless. you can enjoy both manga and anime with the differences they come with if both are done well. i have a feeling some people google how many fillers there are in the show and go "oh man half of them are fillers, it must be bad" but in reality, just like you said, for shows like these it will be hard to tell what is filler and what isn't by simply watching.

    • @lonelyboyadventurer1033
      @lonelyboyadventurer1033  4 года назад

      I think that stems from her great sense of atmosphere and aesthetics, though I have to say her prior work Maison Ikkoku is one of the most 80s anime you'll ever see.
      In regards to Rinne's reversing of trends, it basically added reality into otherworldly stories. Many anime during the mid to late 2000's featured cool, fashionable and good looking high school age protagonists with paranormal side occupations (Bleach, Death Note, The World God Only Knows) who possessed seemingly endless amounts money for gadgets, work supplies and clothing, and Rumiko Takahashi played with this trend by putting a price tag on everything, so the characters couldn't be as "fashionable" as their contemporaries.

    Vegeta was probably one of the worst characters to choose for this section, since he has a massive character arc that spans multiple sagas and about over a decade (in-universe) and shows how he changed through his relationships with Future Trunks, Bulma, and Goku by teaching him the value of his bonds with others and providing him someone to reach/surpass in a relatively safe setting (to teach him that there are some prices that are too great to pay just for your own pride, as well as showcasing that you don't have to give up your bonds to gain true strength), with him failing and going backwards in major ways at least twice.

      Going off of my memory if you're referring to the scene I think you are, I believe I used a picture of Vegeta from Battle of the Gods or Dragon Ball Super and with that specific image I intended to criticize his portrayal in that specific arc, not him in the Z era. Like a Z-era Vegeta would not disgrace himself into dancing just to please someone stronger than himself. So yeah I meant to condemn his "development" in Battle of the Gods, not his growth throughout DBZ. I hope that explains everything.

    I'm curious what do you think about the sequel? I felt the same way you just said at the end of the video on having successors. I expect one thing from the sequel, and it is not to ruin what Inuyasha had achieved. I just don't want to see that the characters' efforts were for nothing, or when they defeat Naraku and after 3 years they reunite, we found out they weren't exactly living peacefully ever after (I'm referring to the first few episodes of Yashahime, since the children don't even know their parents). I am not really comfortable with this, like I can't be truly happy for the group of them when I see they were separated from their children in the last 10 years or so. So what is your opinion on this?

    • @lonelyboyadventurer1033
      @lonelyboyadventurer1033  4 года назад +2

      In all honesty what I've seen about Yashahime thus far I don't think its writers understand the nature of the original work. Like what I've always proclaimed to be Rumiko Takahashi greatest asset would be her ability to write authenticity into her characters. Many of the series' characters practically sync up to people I've met in my personal life and let me just say none of the new cast captured that authenticity. Moroha can be entertaining and in general I do like her, but in no way can she compete against the raw genuineness of the original cast.
      PS I thought I'd attach this prior response to a similar question
      Here's the thing I rarely hold high expectations for sequels, especially with those so far separated from its source material. I've had many other of my favorite series receive less than stellar decades later continuations, so in general I pretty much expect the worst for sequels, meaning that if it falls flat, it'll be no skin off my bones, but if it turns out good, it'll be a nice surprise.

      In regards to the sequel I am definitely interested in it, but I do have to say a few other of my favorite anime received decades later sequels, that let's just say didn't understand what made the original great, and some of the information revealed thus far about the Inuyasha sequel opens up a possibility that it could end up like those others decades later sequels, but other than that I'm still hopeful about it.

    This is a very well constructed video on many positives of Inuyasha as a whole, some even I had forgotten or not really considered.
    Although Inuyasha certainly isn't my favorite series by any means and I personally feel that it drags too much regarding the manga with naraku conveniently getting away just to artificially prolong the series every time, I can't say I ever wanted to drop it due to that fact.
    Another issue I had was the relative inaneness of the series artificially stretching out the drama between kagome and kikyos love interest spat over Inuyasha when kagome was always felt that she was mature enough to recognize where Inuyasha and kikyo(who had it super worse) was coming from. Being jealous or vain the first few times is okay, but how Takahashi stretched it out to 500 chapters I'll never figure out.
    At the time when I was a teen I was very much a crazy fan of Inuyasha and kagomes relationship and very vindictive towards kikyos place in the series, but in the rearview mirror it made things even more silly due to elephant in the room of kikyo literally being kagomes previous self.
    Like both of them being jealous of sharing the same guy when they clearly have the same soul weirds me out haha. And yeah one of the points in the series is how they grew different personalities due to being born in the fuedal era vs the modern world but still...
    If I had a small complaint about the video itself, I'd only say that while mainstream shounen series can be formulaic, anime and manga has countless mutations after all. So only showing a handful of mainstream shounen anime of the time period as examplss and then saying "most anime and manga in comparison" is a sore spot since that doesn't really represent even a small portion.
    During the time I grew up watching anime in the 90s through toonami and adult swim later on, shounen anime had not taken fully taken off as a genre in the west yet, so we got DBZ but also a ton of completely random genres and age ranges of series that show a greater variety than say one piece Naruto DBZ bleach, fairy tail, ect.
    Outside of that great video especially for being 2 years old. I can tell you've vastly improved since this video as well

      I'm glad you enjoyed another one of my videos and that I could deepen your appreciate of the series.
      I will say I originally wanted to title this video "Inuyasha Breaks All the Cycles", but at the time I only had 20 subscribers and I realized that an out there name would attract no viewers, so much to my chagrin I had to give it a more clickbait title to make it more approachable.
      I honestly like Kikyo's role in the story as I see her as the boyhood dream girl, like even if one realizes that the relationship would have never worked out, past fantasies and the "what ifs" always cause one to question one's own logic, which is why I think she works as a character.
      Admittedly I was more comparing Inuyasha to series within its own genre, and not anime as a whole.

      @@lonelyboyadventurer1033 what do you think about yashahime in general? Any thoughts? I know there has been some controversy surrounding that series in the western fandom because of one particular plot point that had people really upset. But I had actually predicted it years ago before Inuyasha was even done so it was kind of just a "duh" moment for me.

    • @lonelyboyadventurer1033
      @lonelyboyadventurer1033  3 года назад

      @MrInuhanyou123
      I honestly don't hold it in high regards, like it has several good nods to the past, cut content and other works of Rumiko Takahashi, but it lacks substance and an understanding of the characters. Let me put it like this Towa wears male clothing, which for women symbolically represents dominance and a more confidant nature, but once the main group returns to the past she plays the more "feminine" roles and is generally the one who is unsure of herself. Also much of this story's concept follows Rumiko Takahashi prior work "Fire Tripper", but it doesn't works no where near as well, like the girl who grew up in the future somehow remembers the past better than the one that remained there in the first place, it instead should of had Towa question if she actually came from the past or if it was all a dream. I have a lot more to say, but I'll save it for the video. With that said I do think Yashahime might be slightly one of the better sequels starring the former protagonists kids. I presume the "duh" moment your referring to regards the the main characters' biological mother, and yeah that should have been expected by most people, but I will say the possibility of Sesshomaru seeing her as an adoptive daughter like figure could have been used as well.
      PS I responded to your Black Clover comment, but I forgot to add @MrInuhanyou123, so you might not have received a notification for it.

      @@lonelyboyadventurer1033 I'll check it out thanks! I do agree with your critique partially with yashahime as it seemed like they were trying to do what Inuyasha did with some filler episodes and some exploring the plot but it felt half baked when people really just wanted answers and the characters they liked back.
      It had a rocky start as it came off somewhat boring for first half of season 1 and some things didn't really make sense like moroha going to the future and not questioning anything including her parents or grandparents or uncle at all.
      But later on in series it stated getting to some good parts regarding answers and info which I thought was nice, and season 2 is looking better based on the trailers cause it's going right into the good stuff early on

      The original Japanese of Naruto is actually quite good. Sakura literally kicks everyone's ass and runs the family. Also, takes over and surpasses Tsunade. The original Japanese anime and Manga didn't butcher the dialog and development. Removed episodes. Reversed episodes, dialog removed, dialog given to other characters for the wrong time etc etc. And most people only seen the English dub so you can imagine how much they don't get to see! Its sad.

    So one correction. Bows are much more physically demanding than swords. Proper war bows. Not toys at archery clubs at school and not modern industrial bows with wheels. Real war bows require immense upper body strength and can't be sustained at full draw for long. To have proper power and range, war bows often have 80+ pounds of draw pressure.
    Hollywood lies. Bows are much more physically taxing than swords which usually don't weigh more than 3 or 4 pounds

    • @lonelyboyadventurer1033
      @lonelyboyadventurer1033  2 года назад

      @AzrielSword100
      For all intensive purposes you are correct, but I don't think Kagome uses a war bow, like the bow she uses extends about the length of her torso whereas the size of war bow can exceed their wielder, so I think hers is more of a recreational variation.
      In terms of swords most "kills" come from stabbing rather than slashes, so this essentially nullifies my point, but with its taxation on the body you're not taking into recoil or the generation of force. Plus with swords there is strain upon removing the blade from the target post-slash.

    • @AzrielSword100
      @AzrielSword100 2 года назад +1

      @@lonelyboyadventurer1033 a well balanced sword should not cause excessive fatigue or recoil. It's not a top heavy weapon the way an ax or war hammer are. So the amount of effort required after every swing to recover is much less.
      Katanas are not stabbing weapons. They CAN stab. But that's not their primary use. Most of the swords in inuyasha are katanas, even if oversized. The one exception is tokijin which is closer to a Khanda or a Jian.
      While Kagome's first bow seems to be a training bow used by iniciate priestesses, the one she has by the end, the sacred bow of Mt Azusa, is very clearly a war Yumi bow like Kikyo's and would be 50 pounds of draw weight on a beginner bow, 200 pounds on an expert field combat bow.
      So even in the best case scenario, Kagome's bow would require much more force to use consistently and accurately than most swords. Barring Tessaiga for its massive size and weight.
