    My personal headcanon is that the Princess' name isn't even Jasmine. Aladdin didn't care enough to learn it, and he just made up a name that sounded convincing enough to tell his side of the story.

    Watching this again, after also watching Big Joel's review of the live action Aladdin... I just realized... _Twisted_ actually _does_ fix a dumb plot hole, possibly by accident, in a really clever and subtle way that the official version couldn't _dream_ of achieving.
    See, Jafar - in all versions - wishes to be the Sultan, and despite whatever "magic" was used, everyone just kind of... doesn't care after he gets lamp'd, and the old Sultan just goes back to ruling and Jasmine is still the princess because... reasons, I guess. But in _Twisted,_ this weird idiosyncrasy and seeming failure of the magic is actually resolved - Ja'far wishes to become the Sultan, and when he "dies", the Princess takes over as rightful ruler... but per the twist, she was never _actually_ a princess before Jafar made the wish, but once he does, she becomes the rightful heir by blood-right and takes the throne when he's gone. To the townspeople it's functionally the same as what they expected, so they don't need to question it, but as the audience it adds a whole other powerful, yet very subtle layer to the story.
    God _damn,_ the writing in this silly play is so good!

    • @unmutedtones6086
      @unmutedtones6086 2 года назад +199

    • @ichigoeater
      @ichigoeater 2 года назад +169

      There's more than one plot hole this version fills. The sultan being depicted as one of the good guys when the main character is literally so down on his luck because of Agrabah's shit economy that he's stealing for the sake of survival. Granted, THIS Aladdin is stealing because he's too lazy to work, but in the original, where the sultan is 'good', Agrabah is clearly a horrible place to live. Shopkeepers have the right to permanently maim people without trial, the number of child beggars is definitely abnormal, and to top it off, kids can be run over or whipped on the street and people just watch. The sultan is clearly an incompetent ruler, and with Aladdin having absolutely no training, he will be just as incompetent if not worse when he takes his place, because in an extremely male-dominated society, Jasmine won't be able to take the throne herself (as much as the live action version made it out like she could). Agrabah is screwed if we go by the Disney films.

      I got to see it live, too! It’s the only show of theirs I’ve managed to catch live (other than their second tour), mostly because I’m not too far from Chicago. Just... unforgettable. I’d been a Starkid fan since AVPM and dragged my boyfriend to see it. He really wasn’t into musicals at the time, but that changed with Twisted. We were both laughing until our stomachs hurt through the whole thing.
      Several months later, we scored tickets to see Book of Mormon, which he was super excited about because he’s a huge fan of Trey Parker/Matt Stone. The FIRST thing he said when it was over was, “Man, that Aladdin parody was way funnier, and a lot better.”

    Something occurs to me now that didn't when I watched it a few years ago: The people complain about Jafar not fixing literally everything in their lives while being unwilling to actually do anything to fix their own lives out of a misplaced belief that things should just work out well for them. They also place the blame solely on Jafar despite the fact that he's only a lone member of the palace, a single bureaucrat working within a much larger governing body... And even if he knew exactly how to fix society, as an advisor he wouldn't actually have the power to make the necessary changes on his own...
    It may have just been an undertone at the time, but post-2016 and now post-2020, it's hard not to see a level of allegory baked into Twisted about the kind of political apathy that was quite common back when it was written...

(I like that the husband brings back the song in the second half as he realizes his responsibility of keeping his family together.)
      The best part that the mother sings is:
      _I could have walked out, left her for dead._
      _Cut her out with my own hand._
      _But something inside me was kicking and screaming to live._

    SO MUCH THIS. It's absolutely fantastic. The only downfall is that everything Starkid has done since Twisted has been "pretty good, but not as good as Twisted." I worry they won't reach such a pinnacle again.
    Also, since Cruella is a thing now, I'm still going to defer to the Twisted take on her. While all the other villains try to justify their villainy (Ursula is granting wishes, Gaston is protecting a Stockholm Syndrome victim, etc.), Cruella comes out shouting "I only wished to have a coast made out of PUPPIES!" and everyone turns on her immediately going "What the hell is wrong with you!? Just leave!"
    Even Twisted knew that Cruella was irredeemable. Should have told the Magic Kingdom, I guess.

    • @raymaikeru
      @raymaikeru 3 года назад +10

      Personally I saw Cruella 2021 as more of a prequel than a remake if I am being honest. Telling the story of how Cruella is getting up to the point of her villainy which sounds like it's gonna be a two parter. The ending obviously didn't leave it off on the right note, especially if they stop the Cruella story there, then it doesn't sound reasonable.
      I feel like _Cruella_ is trying to tell why Cruella wants to have a coat of puppies... even though the ending which I was mind shocked about but then quick seconds of realization made me remember how much it screws the Disney canon. She does mention making a coat of puppies in the remake, so, the idea is still there.
      Cruella is definitely gonna need a reasonable sequel for the confusing ending. I think Cruella 2021 is fun to watch... but Ima stick with Twisted Cruella.

      @@infjelphabasupporter8416 Yeah I also saw it as a reimagining too. There's no way 2021 Cruella becomes the classic Cruella since her evilness is toned down a lot. If you look at it like that instead of through nostalgia glasses the movie is amazing. She doesn't make a coat out of puppies but she's fine with people thinking she did. Also im pretty sure the movie is based off a book anyway?

Dylan slays both as the sweet dumbass and villain and brian holden does, what he does best, not getting taken seriously . . .
      tgwdlm slays with mariah rose faith and robert and social critique
      and not starkid but come one, spies are forever, mk is a queen . . .

      I really like horror, and the end of TGWDLM is genuinely amazing horror. Especially the credits when Emma is desperately screaming, begging for help, while the rest of the cast takes their bows and the audience applauds uproariously. That is true horror. TGWDLM might not be as conventionally scary as a slasher film or whatever, but it instills much more fear (and is more fun).

    Alright yes that music shift between Jafar to Aladdin is really cool but can we talk about how they reprised that heavy electric guitar tune when Jafar goes into "Twisted" because he's finally seen as the actual villain of the story (at least, to all the other characters) because that was SICK as FUCK

    27:15 I’d like to point out that something similar was also done in A Very Potter Senior Year, with Gilderoy Lockhart rewriting the entirety of Harry’s time at Hogwarts to sell as a book series to muggles, and I accept both that and the ending of Twisted as canon in both universes

    • @Quirderph
      @Quirderph 3 года назад +22

      I guess it's more notorious here because Twisted completely turns the original story on its head, whereas the AVPM trilogy mainly streamlines it instead, largely keeping the heart of the books intact.

It's by the Tin Can Brothers, a sister company to Starkid, and the entire musical is so incredibly well done, from the songs to the story. One of my favorite things about Starkid is how a lot of jokes are customized to each time they preform. I think the best example of this is "Trail to Oregon" where pretty much EVERY SHOW is unique in the names of the family members, some of the jokes (like when the shop keep and the dad meet and the dad is robbing him because he scammed them, the thing he says right after failing to sing a reprise of "when the world's at stake" is different each musical).
    And in Twisted, most of these moments are brought on by the Jinn.
