I never thought of it but when Hsiang drives 25mph in NYC and narrates his videos, that is hard to do. Being a cameraman and star of the show, and you have to look out for the traffic.. Add there the attempt to face the camera.. Not easy. I like this new George who talks about safety. You make good point. If people want go really fast and and you hear the beeps all the time - you are asking for accident. You only need, a bump in the road, or strong gust of wind, or both combined to offset the balance when you are already at the limits of performance. When driving a car, I often do not see some of that damage on the road, but imagine hitting that same horror dent on the road with EUC, pushing that performance limit - you know how this goes right?

      @GoGeorge  3 года назад +5

@Cynthia May they will still have about 80% capacity after 1000 charge cycles , so depending on the range of your machine per charge , you can get about 20-30,000 miles put of the batteries without significant range loss. Age wise they will last a long time so long as they are kept in room temp conditions and stored at 50-80% battery state

Excellent presentation skills. The pacing is good. The pauses give us time to digest your thoughts.
Main points I am getting from you, and they are critically-important ones, are that:
    1. Safe riding requires at all times a copious reserve of unused power to accommodate the unexpected; and,
    2. Beeps indicate errors; specifically, that one has bumped against the red line beyond which lie possible injury or death.
I have been watching many EUC-riding videos by many presenters. You were the first one to clearly point out these issues.
Thank you, George. The tutorial is a few years old but retains its value.

Good points. I usually only think of range being limited by weight, wind, road conditions but don't always think about how that will affect top speed. Doesn't matter as much on other EVs but for euc its critically important

That's only an ideal situation. It doesn't happen in life. Only 5% of people have anywhere near that sort of discipline. Its a bit like the IQ bell curve. The rest are testosterone-fueled missile launchers. One will at best slam into the side of a car, and at worst cartwheel through a granny at 35mph and smash her head through a shop window.

I think this is the most important video on EUCs currently out. It is clear, concise and to the point. It should be required watching by anyone looking to get an EUC. Thank you for taking the time to do this George. I think a good footnote to this would be that it's ok to use one only on trails and very low traffic roads. There is no reason for feeling like one has to 'graduate' to trafficked roads at some point.

I completely agree with you. What you say is very important to know. When you buy an EUC you get the machine, an app and possibly a personal account. But nobody talks about the risk, you see the heroes riding along with the EUCs in heavy traffic. This gives a completely false picture of the dangers. But in order to learn, you have to fall on your own. Only then do the first thoughts about security come.

Great points! However, what I also think dangerous, is for the sport. With those wheels becoming so fast and powerful, they will be regulated. And then we might have to drive on the roads for example. Plus, the under estimation of speed is already present with people driving cars, motocycles and the like. Once they jump onto EUC or any PEV, accidents are bound to happen. And, as you said, at 50 mph, the sight will be anything but pretty! Thanks for the video!

    • @GoGeorge

No argument here! Mechanically speaking the machines are certainly higher quality and harder to over power. I fear that gives new riders the excuse not to actually learn how they work though. I was lucky enough to lesrn that lesson at 15 mph. If it can prevent one person from learning that lesson at 40+ its worth talking about . Thanks for watching!!

@@GoGeorge people have the manufacturer specs and hundreds of videos to know what they need to know. Rider responsibility is of most importance. Riders need to start blaming themselves for errors unless it's specifically attributed to the defects in a wheel. It's like guns, cars, blenders etc. There are many versions of each but once it comes in contact with an ignorant and careless human, the danger starts.... Danger starts with the human(and yes especially the manufacturers, when it's warranted)

And it's not like EUCs are part of culture so much or has red tape and safety measures like getting and using a car or a gun. Missinfo and lack of info is a human problem since (as we have seen) we can't just rely on everyone seeking out all the info that is good for them , we need to be more humane then that I think :)

I'm convinced that EUCs are here to stay, despite the ethical issues on our environment.
I live in south India (and being 67, I will probably die here). Riding a EUC is a dream for me. So I keep browsing through the RUclips videos and catalogues hoping to get a good safe wheel for my 5 year old grandson & myself. I had my sights on the MTen3, and was hoping to get one, even if it's a used wheel. This is when I came across your practical and honest opinion on EUCs.
    What's your advice?

I just bought a king song 16x as my first unicycle and it came yesterday I have been absolutely loving it I have ridden about 20 miles already and I could take off the speed cap at 12 mph but like you said I just don't think I am comfortable and natural enough just yet to even bother once I feel like I am fully comfortable at the speed I will slowly start to raise the cap.

Very good points. I just got my first EUC a Kingsong 14D. I weigh 210 pounds and this wheel seemed like the lowest priced wheel that has the power for someone my size.
While it is still in the beginner mode, I have already hit the speed limit warning several times. I didn't think much about what that meant.
After watching your video, you made me think about it differently. I now compare that speed envelope to the contact patch on a motorcycle tire...pushing to the limit leaves less margin of error. I'll now keep my speed a bit lower and hopefully keep from face planting. :)

Kingsong is pretty safe in my experience. As you drop in battery, the max speed is increasingly reduced precisely to keep you safe. It gets annoying at times, sure, but better safe than sorry. I've also hit some nasty nasty potholes and never once did it cut off! Talking about a KS14D
Other wheels will let you ride at top speeds at even 1% battery which is absolutely insane and super dangerous.

Great video! I initially thought this was gonna be a video shit talking EUC safety, but after watching I agree. I think this is why so many new videos on riding take safety so seriously. I'm new to the EUC world, but just after a few videos I saw that everyone was wearing motocross/motorcycle gear from head to toe. And after a few more videos, I saw why lol. Cutouts at 40+ miles an hour, and yeah you need a motorcycle helmet. Or even if a car isnt paying attention and hits you.
So when I got my EUC (Gotway MSX 84V), I made sure to get full gear. I don't plan on pushing it to its limits, but in the Bay Area, you HAVE to ride on bike lanes and I don't trust cars lol.

If you hit something at that speed and run into a car, a wall or something else this is very unforgiving you're most likely going to be sucking fluid through a straw or worse. At least the speed should be cut down by 1/2 the survivability at that speed is a lot more survivable at 60.

I look at PEVs like cars...the top speed is not meant to ride/cruise at. That is simply the threshold.
Speed beeps on EUC are like the red on the RPM meter.
Same way on one drives a car at 160 MPH just because that is the Max speed it will go, no one should ride 55 PMH just because the EUC goes 55 MPH. Always leave about 10-15 mph cushion on the vehicle
Many RUclipsrs give very bad examples in their videos. Like Chooch every video he makes is about speed/going fast and/or crashing. Many of his videos is both...Then they blame the wheel for cut outs

👏 Great vid, great topic inexperienced users are always gonna be a problem be it bikes, cars, gardening equipment, ladders etc. Manufacturers have a duty to make products as safe as possible right? Euc companies have incorporated a bit of safety with sensors , audio warnings (bleeps) and tilt back but they left a huge responsibility with the user to set those parameters correctly with the knowledge that the punishment don't fit the crime if you screw up.... the user will learn the hard way, manufacturers could do alot better tho.
I have been shouting for years to anyone who can hear even manufacturers, ALL EUC'S SHOULD NOT BE ABLE TO CUT OUT FOR ANY REASON OTHER THAN TOTAL BATTERY FAILURE, OR MOTOR/WIRING FAILURE!! The only thing that should cut out in the event of over temperature, speed, torque/load, current/amps, motherboard failure is forward motion.... self balancing and brakes should always remain in all of those circumstances. They've been incorporating sensors for all of the above for years, they know the parameters of the materials they are assembling. Making self balancing and brakes as reliable as possible would eliminate a lot of hurt, look at the amount of recent accidents.... As I said the punishment don't fit the crime in a lotta them circumstances . I know people feel better with big batteries, but every euc of all sizes should give the user a better chance of surviving bumpy ground at high speed, or accidentally over leaning..... keep up the great work looking forward to your next vid.

It’s a good point. I also don’t quite get the very large, heavy high speed wheels. These things are not electric motorbikes. The ride balances on top of the thing....it’s more like skiing on the sidewalk, which is why I enjoy it. They have no brakes, they have an electrical retarding system, but that isn’t disc brakes and abs. I hope the internet shows a disproportionately large number of people who ride at high speed in amongst the traffic on the roads, , and hope that the vast majority of us ride to just cruise about and enjoy the fluidity of movement we have, and act in a reasonably responsible manner. Also, for myself, the idea of lugging a 30kilo wheel about, really doesn’t appeal. 👍

I had some ideas of where I should aim my cruising speed at, or where to put a limit on the app. Now I'm thinking those should be a little lower still. I'm a 220 pound rider without the gear, so I feel I should give that thing some headroom. So since that is a little heavy as well I'll stay far away from the listed top speed at 20mph that I would never reach at my weight anyways.
