    Please keep us updated to let us know if you have found him. I find myself worrying for him and you both. It is very sad to me that such a dedicated and loving bird companion such as yourself has been tortured by this turn of events. Smokey was obviously startled in some way and you are feeling at fault because it was a lapse in judgment on your part. We are human and make mistakes, so be kind to yourself.

      I would not discount the possibility of a premeditated escape. These birds are very intelligent. Smokey might have been waiting patiently for the right moment to escape. She's been living in the aviary and observing wild birds and probably wanted to see what is beyond the cage, join them. What looked like being spooked might have been her making a dash for freedom.

      @@sezwo5774 It's possible, usually those birds are in worse situations but I guess if if maybe she got out. But guaranteed it would be no where near the level of care. It's more like a small child wanting to leave home if that was the case. African greys are fairly easily spooked and freaked out of anything new. I would guess if she wanted to escape it wouldn't be at dusk, outside is a very scary place even in the day time. They make alerts at dawn and dusk to return home to avoid night/ predators. Given this I would say it's pretty unlikely. I think the feeling of flying indoors compared to more than a few stories above ground... when it is getting dark is probably slightly scary. But a weird thing to say as a you-tube comment to someone that just lost a pet. Which is kind of rare for parrots.

    • @sezwo5774
      @sezwo5774 Год назад +1

      @@inejunta6569 Why a "weird thing to say to someone that lost a pet" ?? First, technically he didn't lose Smokey, she escaped. Second, it may be entirely factual- Smokey might have pre-meditated her escape. Third, I said what I said as a consolation to the owner. I personally know the grief and self blame that accompanies such situations. John blames himself for making the mistake of not closing the aviary door. Yes it was a mistake but if Smokey wanted to escape and was waiting for the right opportunity there was little that he could do, ...she would have sooner or later found the right circumstance. He did not "leave the door open slightly and for a brief moment" it's Smokey that seized the opportunity. It might have been pre-meditated. He never explained what exactly "spooked her." I suspect that what looked like a random spook was a pre-meditated dash for freedom. These birds are one of the most intelligent creatures in the animal kingdom and extremely logical. They are certainly capable of behaving rationally... of conceiving an idea- for example of escape, then waiting patiently for the right time to execute it, to act. In other words, and if you still find it "weird" what I am saying, John might have not made a mistake as he believes but Smokey might have acted on her free will, and has outsmarted him.

      @Se Zwo You are very right my dear. If you have a parrot and you bring it outside you and observe your parrot carefully. You can see it slanting the head enlarging and diminishing the pupils to view the high altitude flying birds. Am sure my parrot does that in admiration or fear of those birds flying.

      @@TheBrownNoir It was an accident, she spooked. Although, having had a Grey Timneh for almost a quarter of a century, nearly 25 years, I would not be surprised if the creature were intelligent enough to mentally conceptualize an escape. Make up her mind and wait patiently for the right opportunity, ...wait incredibly patiently (!) for day the door to the aviary will be left wide open and only then ACT, and act very fast which btw. looked to the owner as if she spooked. These birds are incredibly intelligent and super logical undomesticated beasts (we owners tend to infantilize them) ...their thinking is pure logic and of a wild reptilian beast type. I would not discount such a high level of premeditation!!! Especially, as she lived a large part of her life outside, in that aviary, curious and observant of wild birds. He said she quickly flew up very high. That is where she has seen wild birds fly, and that is where she probably wanted to immediately go. All birds have excellent long distance vision. Once she flew up high she did not know she would be confused by the sight of so many similar looking homes and other strange things and would be unable to identify her way back. This is so unfortunate, both for Smokey and her owner, I empathize with both.

      I left way too many replies to this. I can't help but project how I'd feel. And yeah, apparently I wouldn't cope well. You know when you have a thought that you can't accept like leaving your car unlocked or forgetting something. This is one of those things that's weirdly always in the back of my head. Usually you see something sad that has happened and immediately accept it ... But someone has to have that bird. And there should be enough reward incentive that the actual monetary value of the thing shouldn't motivate someone to keep her. Unless someone still just doesn't know.

Sasha was flight capable when I rescued her (but didn't know she could fly) and was startled much the same way Smokey was, and she was able to elude me. I'm fortunate that my brother made an advertisement on a national birdwatch forum. The next day someone called me moments before I printed off 300 flyers to do the same thing. I'm broadcasting the same energy that brought Sasha home to me, for you and Smokey. Praying for her safe return.

    As a 12-year volunteer foster home for PerroquetSecours, the non-profit that handles lost-and-found parrots in our province (Québec), I can certainly relate to your situation. Around here, lost parrots are immediately reported to PerroquetSecours, and the outfit is so well known that most people finding or spotting an unusual bird in the environment will notify PerroquetSecours. Flyers and other means of communicating the loss are certainly your best bet, as I believe that a well-trained grey such as Smokey will definitely seek out a human when life in the "wild" is no longer bearable. Keep the faith.

Make sure you walk around your area a lot and let him see you. The last time my guy took flight it was a couple days till I finally spotted him in a tree. It took him a while to finally fly down to me. Be patient and don't give up. Good luck!

Let us all keep looking. she is somewhere. if she is found we can go fund to make return better than selling. Lets keep at this and get Smoky home where she belongs. There are fruit and date palms all over so the wild birds do well but if she is with a human we need to let them know where and shy she needs her family. I am so sorry for this pain. He allegedly sat at someones open window in an apartment building. Although I doubt the story, ...there was more to it and a long very unpleasant story. It cost me $1000 to get him back. That is what I offered as a reward on a flyer back in 2006. The bird lives with me until today, I hand raised him since 6 weeks old. almost 24 years old by now. My girl could not fly too well (luckily). I eventually found her 4 houses down the street. I’d looked at that house in the first few minutes of me beginning my 33 hour search. I saw her fly down the street and make a left turn over that house. I went straight there and searched, but couldn’t find her. I kept going back to that house. The lady said she would keep an eye out if she saw or heard anything. Then late on the 3rd day she phoned me to say she heard a parrot whistle. (I was on foot searching about 2miles away). I asked her to put me on speaker and I called my girl and she whistled back. I went back to that house where I found her trapped deep between a narrow gap between a boundary wall and a garage wall. The gap was so narrow she could not open her wings or even turn. Once I found her I was able to fish her out of the gap with a swimming pool leaf net on a telescopic pole. If she had not whistled, I would never have found her.

    I just learned of this yesterday. My heart dropped😢. I am hoping by this time, you may have some developments. The risks of having free-flight birds. I wouldn't trade my late parrots' years of free flight for anything, even though it eventually led to his end. We had seven happy, flying years together, and I knew the risks, we all do. I am saddened to hear it happened to you, too. It was unusual that he did not fly down the next day. They fly off at dusk, they stay in a tree and don't make a sound til the sun comes up. (my experience, anyway, but I live in the woods) You and Smokey are in my heart, and I pray for you too to be reunited. Your videos have helped me tremendously with my new rescue - a Blue Hyacinth. John you and Smokey brought a lot of joy to all your fans with your teachings and experiences with Smokey. I do hope you will get another grey and continue on with your videos. You have been a great encouragement and mentor to me when it comes to parrots. Back in 1995 I lost a full grown handsome Alexandrine parakeet, who just took off one day and never returned. Now I am 62 years old and still have two full grown parrots - a Blue n Gold Macaw and an African Grey, and no matter what the ‘experts’ say I keep their flight feathers trimmed so they don’t take off. Most bonded and tamed parrots do not take off intentionally, but if scared into flight accidentally they may fly beyond their familiar zone and unlike pigeons they just don’t have it in them to return home.
    Please know that I am earnestly praying that you get Smokey back, and I believe you will. May God comfort you and your family during this difficult time.

    How terrible -- I have a red-lored Amazon named Shiloh who has been with me for over 20 years, and she is super bonded to me, so I can definitely imagine this. But here's something that may give you hope. I am from Denver, but live overseas in Malaysia now. Last year, I was in Langkawi -- an island in Malaysia I frequent -- and one of my friends there hooked me up with this group who free-fly their birds. They had a few sun conures, an eclectus parrot, a couple of cockatiels, and a Congo African grey named Nico. I particularly liked the grey and the eclectus (maybe because they're similar in size to Shiloh). We had a good time, flying them off the top of a building at the beach, then taking all the birds down to the beach to fly them around -- to the delight of the people on the beach, of course.
    So anyway, a couple of weeks after that, my friend messaged me to say Nico had gone missing during one of the flights. He was always the most "exploratory" of the bunch, even when I was there. Honestly, I figured he was doomed, and that would be that. I was quite upset, because I had enjoyed him so much. Langkawi is full of monkeys, monitor lizards, and a lot of birds of prey -- sea eagles, hawks, kites -- so I believed a rather tame African grey would not stand much of a chance there in the wild. So imagine my HUGE surprise when I was told, nearly three months later, that Nico had been found and was back home! I wouldn't have dreamed such an outcome, especially after such a long time, but Nico not only survived, but looked healthy and none the worse for wear when I saw the pics of him safely back home.
    I really hope Smokey is found and makes his way back to you!! Shiloh and I send positive vibes -- don't lose hope.

      A beautiful and full of hope story. Perhaps Smokey can also somehow survive. There are in San Francisco several flocks of wild parrots living around the Bay, in the vicinity of Telegraph Hill. If there are similar flocks of wild parrots in LA, maybe she could join, or hang around them and learn how to survive. Pet cats are her biggest enemy.

    I feel so sad for your loss. This is an important, yet terrible reminder that these birds, no matter how cuddly, or talkative, or apparently compliant with our training, are wild, and thus remain unpredictable. We who are privileged to have them in our homes must always remember and respect this, and not let our egos or complacency get in the way of their true nature. We must always be vigilant to keep them safe.

    • @sezwo5774
      @sezwo5774 Год назад +3

      They are smart and at some time decide to leave to explore the broader world. Of course they don't understand what's out there, ...they get confused by the surroundings and are unable to find their way back. Clipping wings is a must for any bird owner. No need to discover the obvious- birds do fly away, sooner or later. They live long lives, is a matter of time only.

    How does one search for a parrot that has been missing for a long time? Colder weather will be coming soon. If Smokey is in the wild she probably learned her surroundings and my guess is she would make a habitat somewhere near the beach. Wild parrots of Telegraph Hill in SF congregate in the warmest part of town, in the hills by the Bay, away from busy downtown traffic, ..also nearby trees that grow some fruit, or berries. I'd try an ongoing low level continuous effort to locate her with emphasis on a favorable for habitat area. I'd continue posting occasional fliers at pet stores, vets, supermarkets etc. She might have moved further away from where she was lost, likely downwind and into warmer spots. Source of drinking water would also be a consideration.
