Always a pleasure taking a trip with you through your analysis of trouble shooting these projects, especially your knack of taking a complex problem and breaking it down to simple to understand steps. Always a pleasure. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and learning experiences.
You have uncommon patience and reasoning skills. I know this sounds funny but I enjoy watching/listening to your videos as it brings me back to my youth while growing up with my grandpa and spending countless hours out in his shop with him. He's long since past but your videos bring a aching feeling of melancholy that hurts but yet feels so good. Thank you.
Been watching you for awhile now, really makes me relax the way you methodically go through these small engines,Thankyou for your show,ok going to grab a beer and watch the next one...👍
most 2 strokes ive seen will run either direction, my friend has an old yamaha dirt bike, sometimes when he starts it, it runs backwards, you put it in gear and the bikes takes off in reverse, funniest thing ive seen for a long time.
I had a 175 kawasaki single cylinder rotary valve with electric start. Pressed the starter button. The bike fired and ran but sounded funny. Put it into gear and let out the clutch. Backwards straight into the wall of the garage. Obviously kicked back momentarily and started in reverse.
Pretty neat little engine...first one like it I've ever seen. That's got to be the coolest feature, being able to run it in either director depending on how you position the coil. I don't think 1 in 1000 people could have figured that out as quick as you did. Thanks, Mustie.
Nice little engine find! And I believe that's a 38or36cc engine, a friend bought one from a magazine back pages ad long ago, and it looked similar to that, "add a engine to your bike" type of deal, and I remember his dad and his friends mounted it, and I helped him keep it running (cleaning the plug etc..) back when were young still. But have to take issue with "..work on junk" saying at the end too! It's not junk! It Runs! It will make a fine project motor ;) so it's 'potential treasure' ..which my now passed on wife said I had a lot of..
Fricking excellent! Love the small engine bike things you work on, kind of my cup of tea. I am always looking for very small gearbox/clutch/torque converters for various projects, and good functional as well as universal mount types are hard to come by. The Golden Eagle brand bike motor kit has one of the better designs I have used, very similar to the old Whizzer bike pulley drive, look into it. Quite expensive for kit even sans motor, but mated to those 49cc racing type China engines (4hp+) about $100, pull start, round red or blue powder coated head. I also did a build with a Homelite XL925 from the 70's with a Golden Eagle kit, and it was ridiculous fast. Thank you again for all the excellent videos Mustie1 *Mustie1*
Pretty cool little project! The smaller you make the bike for the engine the cooler it'll look I think. Looking forward to this coming full circle this Season. Cheers! Zip~
I have spent so much time watching these I thought I would put my education to use on a pressure washer yesterday. Always the carbuerator, I pulled it and it was 100% plastic, nothing I could remove, no screws no nothing. No wonder you like the old stuff.
Good stuff.. We made a motorised scooter a while ago..extended the frame on a kids scooter, used a petrol strimmer engine with the same set up on the rear wheel..lets just say the rear tyre didnt last long..was easy to bump start though when rolling...good fun
Hi Mustie, Love your videos, I have learned a lot. I saw part of a video you did where you talked about someone else's video and you talked about listening to your body and taking care of yourself. I would like to see all of it but I cannot find it on your site. Thanks Tony
Its called mx5 superbike made in Korea 33.6 cc friction drive with CVT belt drive transmission. Dual centrifugal clutch. Its a cogged V belt which is very hard to find. I measured it out from v belt supply dot com but every single time they came they were too tight or too small. Gutless engine gets you like 35km/h maximum on 26 inch wheels. I rode this engine for over 10 thousand kilometres before I was busted with no insurance for it . 700$ fine and suspended my license. You can use the carburetor off a new motorized bike engine but you will need a new 4 bolt pocketbike intake. I have sooooo much wealth of information on these engines, I've never seem anyone else with one. Anyways, this is getting me too excited. Enough RUclips for today.
NOW THAT IS A PROPER BIKE ENGINE. I'VE OWNED A FEW DIFFERENT TYPES OF THESE OLD BIKE ENGINES NEVER SEEN A CVT AND FRICTION DRIVE SETUP THOUGH. LACK OF POWER HAS ALWAYS BEEN MY COMPLAINT . OTHERWISE EVERY MANUFACTURER WAS DEFINITELY HEADING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. SO WHY STILL IS THIS THE MAIN ISSUE? ADVANCES IN ENGINE TECHNOLOGY SHOULD HAVE ILLIMINATED THAT. THE KITS AVAILABLE TODAY ARE FREAKING GARBAGE! ALL OF THEM! CHEAP CHINESE OR HIGHER QUALITY ONE'S. THIS MAKES NO SENSE WHATSOEVER. SO US GARAGE DESIGNER'S HAVE TO COMPLETELY REWORK THESE THINGS ONLY TO ACHIEVE MINOR IMPROVEMENTS.
Excuse me!!!! You said “playing with a little junk” and I don’t think that cool little engine is junk. It’s a powerhouse of fun on a small scale! Nice work! It’s going to make another Mustie1 awesome moving piece of art! Tell Brian he needs to get back on his meds before he runs into the house - haha!
I love the sound of un muffled or low restriction 2 strokes!!! I built a few large scale RC engines our of weed eaters and always fired them up just to hear them before I sold them.
Looks a lot like the old style Shriner's mini bikes engines that used to be in old type parades. the reciprocating, torque converter clutch . Pretty good engineering Mustie
I hope to see it on a bike. My bike was my transportation everywhere. I dreamed of having the fast bike with an engine on it. I lived in small town Minnesota. All the boys knew what kind of bike you had. My bike was an industrial grade my great uncles used on the farm. Not to good looking or fast. Maybe you could modify it as a starter for hit and miss engines. I like your channel. It reminds me of projects from my youth. Well now there are 3 motorcycles...and I have traveled the world by motorcycle.
You're in semi-familiar territory for me here Mustie! That engine is very similar in buildup to the 45/49cc engines on the Chinese mini-quad and mini-motos like our boys used to have before they got too big. That plate on the carb would have been a plastic fuel tap originally, they are known to be restrictive and leaky in one and better off removed. If the engine is a larger/higher state of tune (as suggested by the separate cylinder head) you may get better performance with a Dellorto replica 15mm carb. Not seen the whole video yet but you should find any parts needed are easy enough to come by for pocket change on ebay. Off to watch the rest now, Cheers.
I seen a set up like this on a trike that ran off the front wheel. Could explain why the coil was set up backwards. Love the videos. I could see sitting down with you and picking your brain for hours.
Looks like an early Australian Victa mower engine. They ran sans cover with a peach tin fuel tank. Not sure what size the early Victas were but by the late 60s they were around 100-160cc. Sure there are no casting numbers on the fins or crank case? Good find though. That straight finned flywheel was a pull-rope winder wheel on the mower and the finned cylinder head would be face on to forward direction of mower.
This could be used like a Choremaster, to pull a sulky using a Coleman cooler as a seat/ medicinal beverage cooler. Plus, limes to prevent scurvy. Would a pivot bushing made by turning, boring, and bushing a hockey puck do the job? Stuck in with weatherstrip adhesive? Keep 'em coming. Tom
You could actually add a sprocket to that and use it for a little moped or rear bike tire type engine. I had a Solex moped, I had a blast with it until I traded it for a Sears Garden tractor with assories including a pull behind rototiller, front mounted snow blade and single stage snow blower as well as lawn deck. Traded that for a rusty old Chevy Truck.
Like that hamster oil/fuel mix dispenser. Great catch on the directional spark deal. Never seen that one before. Did have an idea about something you could build that would come in handy when starting those engines with a drill to prevent kickback on the drill when they start. Use a Chev Bendix starter drive with that one way directional dog clutch. Weld a 3/8" drive 3" extension to each end. It could be rotated 180 to accommodate RH, LH thread nuts. That way when those engines start it wouldn't want to rip the drill from your hands. Had to toss you my 5c thought today.... (5c = inflation) Not only that I think I could almost see a starter drive in your hoard from here.
Is it okay to run this type of 2 stroke without a pipe? The pipe usually is a big factor in the Air/fuel ratio, the returning pressure wave from the combustion sends unburnt fuel back into the cylinder. Granted, its not an expansion chamber, but i think it might have an impact. If i ran my puch without a pipe, it'd seize pretty quick......
brandon2076 while you're correct about 2 strokes requiring a pipe to get a proper f/a ratio...you've also gotta remember that the entire crankcase/intake side of this motor is still likely coated with old 2stroke oul from previous runs. That coupled with the fact that ol Mustie1 is not really putting much of a load on the motor means she's likely not running lean enough for long enough to cause any real damage.
I wouldn't run one of these with an open header or something, I'd put some kind of muffler or pipe on it for sure. On the other hand, something like an old enduro that has proper oil injection directly into bearings, to prevent it from seizing up if it runs lean would probably be alright. Not sure how well it would tune or run that way
Jason Grimm the damage wouldn't be so moch to the crank bearings, it'd be to the bore and piston. That can be mitigated to some extent by running the motors extremely fat...but then they do not make good power. Length of head pipe, length of divergent & convergent cones, length & diameter of the stinger all need to be matched properly to the motors displacement & port timing to make real manageable power out of a 2 stroke.
If you understand how the Isetta / BMW (circa 1954) two stroke worked. It had two sets of points set at 7 degrees BTDC each side and to go backwards you start the engine backwards. To go forwards, the opposite. On a cheap 2 stroke, the magneto coil is offset, exactly to allow either direction dependant upon the application.
Old Fairmont Railroad inspection cars had a big 2 stroke single that ran both directions. If you wanted to go the other way you would just flip a timing lever and then start the engine the opposite direction. With practice you could turn the engine off, flip the lever and restart on its last gasp changing the direction without cranking.
Not sure why but when you said the workers nearly killed themselves it reminded me of a place I worked where we would ride in the trailer of a lorry (semi) to get to the other building on the estate. It was very sketchy to say the least. How one of us didn't fall off and get killed is beyond me.
I had a moped back in the 70’s. It was a carabella. 50 cc, but a slightly different clutch/start set up. Carb was the same though.... click that throat plate down, pedal like hell, pull the start lever
That drive wheel makes contact with the bike tire, meaning it needs to spin in reverse to push the bike forward. It was set up correctly for that type of operation but you flipped the coil to make it run the way it would on a mini bike. Yes, that motor is designed to be run in either direction so it could be universally mounted in either direction depending on the available mounting position on the bike.
Hey guys (and Mustie), what do you guys think on what cordless impact should I buy, being that i never had one before? Not talking much about brands, but about size! Is a 1/2" drive really necessary or a smaller one with a hex drive is enough for the usual screwing around in the garage?
What fun! You must smile a lot because you get things running. Great self satisfaction! I am thrilled when I fix stuff. Question is what will you use the little engine for? Maybe on one of your bikes? Great video! Love your channel! Thankz
Thats a nice little motor, didnt take long for you to make it go :-D If that drive part is original i could imagine it on a bicycle to help it up hills. I bet you will find a use :-D
that carb. looks very close to a tanaka tob 300 /gamefisher outboard carb. i wonder if it would work on my old tanaka since a tanaka carb kit isnt available anymore...
If you were going to run it the other direction, would the internal air circulation work optimally for the inlet ports inside between the crank case and the cylinder? Also you might then consider using a sprocket and chain instead of a capstan.
Always a pleasure taking a trip with you through your analysis of trouble shooting these projects, especially your knack of taking a complex problem and breaking it down to simple to understand steps. Always a pleasure. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and learning experiences.
I would have thought by now that your parts cleaner would have a motion detector that turns itself on when you walk into the shop.
You have uncommon patience and reasoning skills. I know this sounds funny but I enjoy watching/listening to your videos as it brings me back to my youth while growing up with my grandpa and spending countless hours out in his shop with him. carolina beachin lmbo I had a older Suzuki quad that did that
2 strokes that run on nitro often reverse-start, it's only one step so it works just as well, often hard to spot until you accelerate!
5 Speeds in Reverse!
I had a 175 kawasaki single cylinder rotary valve with electric start. Pressed the starter button. The bike fired and ran but sounded funny. Put it into gear and let out the clutch. Backwards straight into the wall of the garage.
Obviously kicked back momentarily and started in reverse.

These are the best puzzles. Nice work as usual!
got another vid on the drill too
Sweet! You should use it to tap maple trees, just like it was made for.
I'm subscribed to you both, you put out some really interesting stuff! Thank you.
I think Mustie1 needs a sticker now so you can put one on your toolbox, since he's got one of your stickers on his toolbox :)
That's how I look at it too😀
Another grate find!thanks for sharing.your a lucky man with all these small motors.great channel

Love your logical problem-solving approach.
That is very very interesting as it relates to you reversing the coil, I must remember this possibility.
Pretty cool little project! The smaller you make the bike for the engine the cooler it'll look I think. Looking forward to this coming full circle this Season. Cheers! Zip~
Cool little motor... Reminds me of my French Solex ..front wheel friction drive 49cc.

That's a wild one Mustie!!!, If any one can tame it you can!!, Great Murphy's law video!!!
Great to see ya back to tinkering... You are an awesome fabricator but i must say I enjoy these vids more. Thanks again for doin what ya do Mustie!
Nice work, Mustie. That "Dongil" belt is Korean. This looks like a really well made little (Korean?) scooter engine.
Its called mx5 superbike made in Korea 33.6 cc friction drive with CVT belt drive transmission. Dual centrifugal clutch. Its a cogged V belt which is very hard to find. Joe Churchill you nailed it. It's a good-looking it little machine when it's mounted on a bike

It is just cap lock NOT SCREAMING🤫
Hi Mustie, I'm beginning to think watching your videos is better for my blood pressure than my medication!
l aim to chill my viewers
And A heck of A lot cheaper also! I get high B.P. when I have to pay for mine!!

Looks a lot like the old style Shriner's mini bikes engines that used to be in old type parades. the reciprocating, torque converter

Gary Roberton Shriners around here use Briggs engines on their scooters.
Love your videos Mustie1. Thanks for sharing.

Mustie1, another great job. never saw that directional problem before.
Will it run episodes are always the best!!! 👍👍 you ready for this storm that's coming later today? Haha getting the snowblower ready.
This is what I love to see. Mustie mending machines!.
Always great projects, a master at your work bench!
I like that you don't give in you just keep going until you win.Stubborn is a good thing.
Would love to see the mini bike build... great idea! Seems like it really wants to rev.
Neat little unit for sure, very compact, yet complete.

Hey Mustie1, the ones that start easy are good for the ego, the ones that fight us normally teach us something!
I seen a set up like this on a trike that ran off the front wheel. Could explain why the coil was set up backwards. Love the videos. I could see sitting down with you and picking your brain for hours.
I LOVE THAT THE INTAKE/REEDS ARE IN THE FRONT WHERE TYPICALLY YOU FIND THE EXHAUST PORT. MAKE IT "RAM AIR"
YES BECAUSE RAM AIR IS SO EFFECTIVE BELOW 300MPH
I have a 20cc Tanaka water pump with that same carb on it. Very cool design

It's always about the fuel . Your a good Mechanic Mustie
Put it on the Cushman for a kicker motor.. in case of emergencies ;)
That would make a neat project. I bet the only problem would be getting the friction wheel against the wheel of the bike.
Sweet little motor! Nice job Mustie.
The Engine Whisperer works his magic
This could be used like a Choremaster, to pull a sulky using a Coleman cooler as a seat/ medicinal beverage cooler. Plus, limes to prevent scurvy.

I see a miniature motorcycle project in the near future! I hope to see a video series of it!

one guy recomended a wire brush in a drill l need to get one the right shape and try it.
I'd bet one of those encapsulated wire brushes would work well!
2jeffs1 looks like what I put on my bike
why don't you try putting the carburetor back on it and don't forget to change the oil

that is really a neat little motor if it is reed you can put carbon fiber reeds in it and have a power band fore even more power cool
Not sure why but when you said the workers nearly killed themselves it reminded me of a place I worked where we would ride in the trailer of a lorry (semi) to get to the other building on the estate. It was very sketchy to say the least. How one of us didn't fall off and get killed is beyond me.
Always interesting thanks for sharing
"Kept spinning it's nuts off"... I hate to tell ya how many times that's happened to me.
I had a moped back in the 70’s. It was a carabella. 50 cc, but a slightly different clutch/start set up. Carb was the same though.... click that throat plate down, pedal like hell, pull the start lever
And away it went. Motor looked A LOT like what you have. Hope that helps you find parts.
That would make a good wheel-to-wheel starter motor for a classic race bike.
Great video cool little engine
I agree with Jarret. LOL! Mustie's laugh when he succeeds.
Be interesting to see what you make of it
Excellent tech! 4/21/2021
Looks very much like a Minari motor often used on paramotors etc usually 48cc or 80cc ?
Great video can't wait to see what you do with that engine
Love your "will it run videos"
glad to see a "will it run " again !!
That tube was up but you already figured that out from watching your own video's. I agree with another viewer, you are the "engine whisperer.
Excellent work!!
Hey guys (and Mustie), what do you guys think on what cordless impact should I buy, being that i never had one before? Not talking much about brands, but about size! Is a 1/2" drive really necessary or a smaller one with a hex drive is enough for the usual screwing around in the garage?
Neat little engine and sounds good.
Pretty cool little engine
I'd bet an old Briggs shroud would fit. It sounds like it's got some snot- tough little thing.
Of course it will run!
Why just hand-tighten the sparkplug? Purpose or oversight?
Well done again.
Thats cool,,it sounds like it would haul ass lol on a bike mountain -bike 10 speed oh yea dont get hurt thogh buddy take care,
I have a quick question. How would you determine what fuel/oil ration to run in that engine with out knowing the manufacturer, etc?
looks like a great little motor a mini bike for when you take the cushman meter maid out to shows lol
Make a hell of a front wheel drive... think hot rod Solex. LOL
And a Hand Tool Rescue sticker at 15:00. Nice
What fun! You must smile a lot because you get things running. Great self satisfaction! I am thrilled when I fix stuff. Question is what will you use the little engine for? Maybe on one of your bikes? Great video! Love your channel! Thankz
mustie yer the best, you an my old ford are made for each other
Lawn tractor burnouts are cool,so is that little motor
Happiness is a new Mustie1 video to watch while eating dinner! :)
That would make a perfect motor for a 5th scale RC cars
Thats a nice little motor, didnt take long for you to make it go :-D
If that drive part is original i could imagine it on a bicycle to help it up hills.
I bet you will find a use :-D
Great video as always
that carb. looks very close to a tanaka tob 300 /gamefisher outboard carb. i wonder if it would work on my old tanaka since a tanaka carb kit isnt available anymore...
That set-up is very different what kind is it where was it made
hey mustie I have the flu and pneumonia I need more videos please going crazy laying around lol
If you were going to run it the other direction, would the internal air circulation work optimally for the inlet ports inside between the crank case and the cylinder?
Also you might then consider using a sprocket and chain instead of a capstan.
What do you use as a cleaning agent in your ultrasonic cleaner to clean your carbs?
excellent ce moteur!!! d'ou vient il ??
Mustie, it would look cool in a Stingray Krate Bike.
