I've had this since it came out, it's fun, but definitely a dumb grind sometimes. Why does every game nowadays feel like a day job. We buy our consoles and computers to avoid the stress of the worklife, not so we can grind our business battles on GTA or run a mission 300x for a cool cape..
Because game devs are bad nowadays. They don't know how to add content that keeps interest to their game so they resort to tedium through the addiction that comes from multiplayer games.

i dont see why people hated rivals, sure it wasn't JDM tuner culture and customization was limited but the gameplay is fun and its absolutely gorgeous, the super cars everywhere is a nice refresher from typical NFS titles. i still play it sometimes. besides i highly doubt they would remake underground 1/2 or most wanted 2005, and if they did it would be EA's typical bullshit mixed in and everyone would hate it.

Why don’t they just remaster NFS Carbon and Mostwanted? Same gameplay style but add a little more to the story. Like an extension... Darius comes back... Razor returns... something of the sort. Put the whole crew member concept back into play. I believe every game after those two, and I’d even go as far as to say after NFS Undercover have been a bust. The story has no real purpose, no main character from game to game. These new NFS titles just don’t suck you in like the classics.
Thank you for saving me $60. I used to have tons of fun back in college with my roommates playing NFS: Most Wanted, and was looking into getting this to relive some of that. However, most of the fun we had came from level 5 cop chases in freeroam, screwing around to pull crazy stunts, or challenging ourselves by fully upgrading cars we didn't use often. It's disappointing that Payback can't really offer much of that to me.
Midnight club is the best arcade racing game ever, it has everything you'd want: varied customization, minimal cut scenes, dope as sound track, dynamic weather, no micro transactions (You could get everything for free in Midnight Club LA once you beat the game). Midnight Club is just perfect, Rockstar needs to sell the franchise because you know they're not gonna waste their time working on a new Midnight Club when they could make more money working on a new GTA, red dead, or Bully game.
i actually liked the run though the story was just useless and cliché as well. The races were pretty fun and some sequences were pretty cool (why the QTEs though ?)

To all people that won't buy this game because of that: I preordered the game before I even knew that they removed freeroam cop chases and was then disappointed. I thought that the game would lose its intense moments. Yet I still decided to try it, and I was surprised that these linear cop chases were actually quite good. Of course, you don't have to improvise and you won't just randomly have to escape them, but it's still good, you're going to get that adrenaline rush that you want. Try it, and you won't be disappointed. You can always refund it.
Crying potatoes Not really. I got the chance to test it out and it felt like forza. At first I didn't get why people compared forza and payback, since they were so vastly different. But when you start driving in payback it *really* feels like a combination of forza and burnout.

the only thing which might be important and quite rare are neons, everything else you can do whatever you want to do, also you will get some neons for freee in short, and some free loot boxes from time to time, you don't have to buy those. i got like 5-7 neons for playing the story, and if you don't buy like 20 cars at the beginning thats enough.
You just...wonder if they intentionally drop the ball on things so they can keep releasing more games without having to work too hard to one up the previous? I mean they've made that many games already, surely they know what the people are after by now? Give us: Nice graphics Diverse tracks Enjoyable controls No rubber banding Free roam Quality police chases Robust online but not always online Heavy visual and performance customisation (Again, with no rubber banding so it actually means something) A story with some originality and inspiration A general air of respect for the gamer as a human being and not just a customer and on that note, zero loot boxes. Have I forgotten anything? They've checked pretty much all of these boxes in separate titles, but refuse to put them together into one.
How about you make a video game and see how good you do? I want you to at least do one of those things on that list. I'm sure you can't. Look at what they gave you. A huge map, great customizations from real body kit designers as well as a few of they're own. A nice story that I hope ties in well with future titles. Great sound design, clean graphics, and future cars to be released for free. So what's your problem with this game? You need more to entertain your empty mind? Quit complaining about video games. If you don't like it, don't buy it. It takes a lot of work and a big team to make games and it's sometimes hard when you need to optimize games to run smoothly and work as they should. They're has to be hundreds of pages of coding that goes behind a game like this. And if you take away 1 number... you game is broken. That's a very weak argument and it ignores the main point of my comment. First of all, you don't have to be able to do something well to know when it's done poorly. You don't have to make an amazing film to know The Last Airbender is pretty crap. That's a common, yet poor argument. Second of all, I haven't even played this game, I'm not discrediting what it has to offer or saying that this is a bad game in any way. You assumed I was inferring that. Thirdly, stop insulting me, you've no idea who I am and are already telling me I've an empty mind for having an opinion on a bloody video game. Grow up. The first to resort to insults has lost the argument. I'm well aware that video game development is a huge, grueling effort, especially because I've dabbled in it myself. I was not arguing otherwise. What I was arguing was that they seem to know what features we want, and seem to be able to create those features that we want, but never put them together into a single game, though they seem to be able to. They will make an amazing game that's missing one or two vital things or has one or two vital flaws in design that let it down and sour the deal. Almost as if they want to be able to improve upon the title without having to be able to innovate too much. Often these aren't even technical accomplishments either but rather design choices (such as rubber banding or loot boxes). They know rubber banding pisses people off. Why not create an option to turn it off, that's not complicated in the slightest. Lastly, I was merely putting out a thought, a theory. It wasn't meant to be taken too seriously or heavily scrutinized. By all means enjoy the game, I was not attempting to argue it was bad or you were wrong for liking it. Rather I was disappointed that recent games have repeatedly been lacking different, sometimes crucial features that the team were well capable of implementing, as they've done so time and time again in the past. There's a reason the underground games and 2005's most wanted are still some of the best nfs games available, even without the added bonus of nostalgia. They give the people what they ask for. From what I've seen (to be taken with a grain of salt, again, I've not played it), out of that random list, the game offers: -Nice graphics -Diverse tracks -Enjoyable controls -Some free roam? Can't remember. -Robust online but not always online -Fairly decent customisation But: -Any performance customisation is made far less meaningful due to rubber banding. -The police chases are a step backward, they had it right in 2005 for goodness sake. - The story seems to be very generic and lackluster. More "acceptable" than truly enjoyable, but that's not fully fair, I haven't experienced it. -The game doesn't seem to go to any lengths to respect it's players as people, especially with the inclusion of the dreaded loot box progression. -It doesn't seem to be very original or fresh in any way. Where's the innovation? It feels like they're moving backwards from their previous games in most ways except visually, at least in my eyes.
What if they do make a game with all the said features. Wouldn't that also mark the end of the franchise, to give the fans who's stuck with them all through the years a dream game that they've been asking for? Because once that game is made, the successor would just be copied paste and you know they're people out there that would complain about everything. Maybe instead of making a new game they could just patch it then. If they do that, and if the patches and add-ons are free, then they wouldn't be making any more revenue off of the franchise. This would mean they have to do micro-transaction especially for the cosmetics because that's one of the key selling part of the game. Granted there are games out there that are f2p, but one of the major revenue for it are cosmetics and/or micro-transaction. For example, they'd have to be really creative with the cosmetic items because they're aren't that many real world aftermarket parts. Real world kits that aren't sold by a specific brand/manufacturer are pretty much mods people do with their cars and that's the same as Ghost in-house kits for the game. Then there's the p2w aspect, whether it's completely broken or gives you an advantage over people who actually grinds for the game. People are already complaining about micro-transaction (not saying that I approve of micro-transaction or I don't hate it), maybe they'd do it less if NFS became like this? I don't know whether this would be good for the franchise or not, because if they do this then I guess NFS would just become some sort of mmo/rpg. I also heard that EA's (too lazy to look for source, I'm just mentioning this, and it's not really relevant to this particular topic) finally going to stop making madden games and just make one and then patch it because i guess they're losing more money making physical copies than release a new one every year? Idk, im just answering your original post, but i do get the rubber banding cars and the randomize performance cards. It's fairly annoying, because at least the ps2 NFS era locks them away in story mode. In NFS 2015 the game kinda becomes dull if you spend your resources not buying new cars but upgrading like 2 cars, like how I did with the r34(race, drag, etc.) and the brz (drift).
I don't think it's fair to argue that games should be intentionally lackluster in order for the franchise to keep running though, nor do I really think a good game that has most of what people want would be the end of the franchise. It would simply force them to innovate in order to continue on, and rightfully so. Not to mention that they've made several very good games in the past. None of them were the end of the franchise, and they all felt different and interesting in their own ways. (underground 1&2 and most wanted for example, are fairly well cherished by the community). I honestly think that just adding different cars, maybe a different setting, time or premise, a different story, maybe some new and interesting modes, more interesting online, more detailed customisation, a different style of controls, and/or maybe some innovative ideas to spice up the genre every now and again, (such as the crew's new addition of plane and boat racing) would be more than enough to keep the franchise going strong. I know I'd buy more than one title if they were all of that quality. Madden is a different story though because it's obviously a lot harder to innovate or add new content to a game like that, and I think that's a fair move on EA's part. I'm also not arguing for a perfect game if that's what you took from my initial comment, just that fewer balls-be dropped if you know what I mean. Tbh its so close to Forza Horizon 3 and yet so different, but I'm a huge car nut and love the game! Its got its flaws admittedly but its still a cool fun game! If your a huge NFS fan or racing fan you'll like this game! :)

it's an arcade racer, no more no less...I like it because sometimes it is just fun to slide and race without having to worry about getting thrown out in every curve
PREDATOR X The older, most popular games had a more realistic handling model and sudden change to half arcade & half realistic to 100% arcade out of nowhere is quite jarring because I feel the majority of this audience is older so they like the more realistic handling, including me.
NFS Underground 2 was an arcade racer. But you know what made that game fun? Consistently good physics. You knew what the car was gonna do and you knew how to control it. Here you have four modes - Regular driving - Brake to drift - Handbrake into a literal sharp turn that instantly stops your momentum and kills any immersion that you're actually driving a car - Drifting in the drift modes where you literally only hold left or right because there's no incentive to do anything in that mode, it's laughable how bad it is.
Rebooted i actually think NFS the run was the last game with very good physics, you actually had to counter steer and control your throttle if you ever found yourself doing a drift.
As a car enthusiast I love it. The cosmetic customisation and the performance enhancement systems work amazingly. The drifting and drag features are really good too. I don’t believe that “micro-transactions” are a real problem in this game as the leveling and mission progression happens on a semi regular base and the free shipments come in enough that I don’t need to spend ANY extra money whatsoever. 8.5/10 game
To my fellow ps plus friends, this game is worth the download. Like he said, the story isn’t that good, but the racing makes it worthwhile. If you have been missing out on a the past few games on the franchise, I would definitely give this one a shot. I love the customization and a lot of the races that this game provides.

I really don't like the drifting in this game because it doesn't really take "skill" to drift, like when you start to drift, it like locks into a drift and then you just hit the gas and there you go, that's really the big flaw in the game to me (this is my opinion, hmu with what you think about he drifting) and the Arcady drifting is what some people like, but I like the more harder versions of drifting
This game is unfinished, the loot box route was a lazy way to give us more customization. No online freeroam, no random cop chases, dull graphics, missing cars, terrible voice acting..... can’t be fun at all.

My first racing game since Midnight Club 3 on PS2. I was pleasantly surprised by how the story took me in. Felt like I was playing a movie. The dialogue is cringy but the idea of the story is interesting. The racing itself is actually fun. Been a League of Legends and Call of Duty guy for the last 8 years and was hesitant about going to a game not those two but it was really fun.
Cops dont change the none existing tuning the bad customization options, the 2005 graphics and the lack of love the devs clearly had eesigning that garbage.

Im a cheap gamer who uses a laptop and $39 headphones but a casual racer fan who's been an NFS fan since NFS Porsche so heres what i think: Wait for a sale. I got Hot Pursuit for 16 dollops on Steam, and im planning on doing the same for a game receiving disappointment here and there.
Don’t believe the negativity you see about this game on the Internet, I believed it and almost missed it. This game is awesome. I’ve been trying to play heat and god it’s so dull. Progression is so slow. Payback is fun and gets you going driving the cars you want to drive and quick. Yeah the loot box thing is dumb but haven’t found any issues with it so far and have tons of parts unlocked pretty quick. The driving Is also the fun Arcady type. Which makes you feel awesome at games. Heat I would say 5/10. Payback is 9/10 for me.
casual race gamer here I enjoyed the game but I think I prefer games that really reach for "realism" good physics clean graphics, mechanically competent customization.
there already was one ... NFS World which unfortunately closed :/ I personally think that NFS World was better than any of the recent NFS games because of huge freeroam (there was even a place where people would park their cars and showoff), cop chases in freeroam , co-op chases and all the good stuff. It felt like a always online NFS MW05 or Carbon with Underground customization to some extent. Daily missions to earn you stuff , duels , drags but the bad parts were its pay2win mechanics which honestly didn't destroy the joy for me (I spent maybe 10 dollars for some car customizations I really wanted). I honestly hate EA for ruining old games and closing servers then not giving open source for the game so other fans of the game could take it online.
in my opinion i hate that card based upgrade system..they did it for micro-transactions as you say,and that is such a turn down for me, irl we choose our parts to uprgrade cars, we don't randomly win them at the end of a race i want to buy upgrades , not to win them by luck in a spin they should have stuck with the clasic upgrade system from 2015 that (i think) everyone knows and loves and another thing, we need cops in freeroam for me that's what mainly bothers me about this game as nfs fan
Vlad Alex i really REALLY love the upgrade system in nfs 15, it's clear, simple, and pretty much well done. No cops in free roam is not that big of a deal for me but i would rather have them in free roam. What really bothers me is the fact that there is no multiplayer free roam, but am sure Ghost will figure out something as an update.
I on the other hand love this game,its still not perfect,but it has a lot of cool returning features.Neons are back.,air suspension is back,SUVs are back its all good for a hardcore nfs fan.The only thing that i dont like is that brake to drift is on all cars (but you can change it i think),and that crash cams are back,those are just annoying. Edit:you can disable crash cams too so its good.
I find it thoroughly depends on the car and the upgrades you have taken as well. Like my racer is incredible hard to drift but i took away like any air time it can get and stuff like that. I want it to stick to the ground. I do find that the drift car I have takes almost nothing to have it sideways. Sometimes hard to do anything with it other than drift. My least favorite thing is no map tracking for roaming racers and that is sometimes balls to mark a location and get there and they are where you left from to begin with haha .Scaling of AI is really lame too since it is on the card system and that levels your car. I have entered races that say you need like 140 with a 290 car and I will find the race tough. This is crazy since I have a car with double the points. They should not be able to keep up at all. Whats the point of me getting cards if AI cars despite the level they say they are can keep up. I know it is in a whole game wants to keep you trying but hell when I just want to go back and do some races for quick cash it is pretty lame.
When will they figure out that nobody buys a racing game for the damn story? Its pretty frickin simple, more cars, more customise options. Nobody gives a shit about the story.
The Crew is nothing like NFS... Stop comparing them just because it has multiple classes of vehicles that range from street racing to off road built vehicles does not mean they are by any means the same...
They need to create the characters and character dynamics that emit that of the Need For Speed: Carbon character and story, where the drive and plot advancements create characters that feel notoriously badass and 'to-be-feared' in their own right. Where the crews they command are intuitively gang-esque and criminal (to an extent) creating a realistic, in a motivational sense, yet dystopian, in a hierarchical sense, storyline.
I am, too, a crazy person who has played (almost) every need for speed game and as such I gotta say this game really did try (maybe-- to it's detriment-- a bit too hard) to do something new and in many ways it brought out the best of nfs.
Man the true essence of street racing was felt in Underground 2 only. The whole concept of being able to customize and tune your car and enter these different kinda events is awesome. Even NFS prostreet was a bit similar but it had its huge deal of flaws. But i want something like a combination of MW and UG2. That would be dope 🤘🏼
Not a single pedestrian makes the gameworld look incredibly dead, not saying they should go all-out GTAstyle but some life in the streets would make for a more immersive game. Aswell as what you guys mentioned about there's barely any copchases which is sad because that was what made the original Most Wanted and Hot Pursuit so longlasting. Overly scripted with poor animations, poor physics, arcade gameplay with very little to be like "Oh wow, that just happened" and giggle profusely.
Pedestrians aren't in any racing game tho, because as soon as they arrive problems arise. Complaining that it's not lived in is like looking at goat simulator and asking Complaining that it doesn't have a plot
I don't want to feel like i'm playing a freemium mobile game althoug i bought a 60€ AAA Title. The Problem is not that there are microtransactions, it's the System that comes with it. This RNG based lootbox cards system is absolutly no fun. So fck this game.
My car is making weird noises. My mechanic told me he just needs to BUY CARDS AT THE SHOP, DUDE. EVERYTHING IS FINE WITH RANDOM CARDS. THROW THEM AT YOUR CAR AND FIX IT.

I like the game, but I wish it was like Rivals. I loved NFS: Rivals. I've had so much fun with my little bros playing as cops & robbers. It was SO FUN! Payback is good, but Rivals tops any racing game for me. I hope there's a sequel or just make every NFS like Rivals. Oh & one more thing... BRING BACK SPLIT-SCREEN!
Im a fan of the pre-criterion nfs. I have played all nfs series. Im a fan of forza games along with gran turismo. This game i will most likely pass on. This review/ advise is view good and in depth.
I loved this game a lot. It felt manageable to play, while still being difficult enough to be enjoyable! I haven't finished a single player game in a very long time, and this one had me glued to my seat for more.

I honestly think drifting has ruined modern NFS. Look back on all the games we loved when we were younger, Underground 1 and 2, Most Wanted, Carbon, hell even the original Hot Pursuit 1 and 2. You wanna know what they all had in common? There was no "drifting" yes powerslides were possible but for the most part the cars just gripped the road and for an arcade style game it honestly felt more natural. I find with many modern arcade racers the cars handle like theyre on rails or something. Drifting always feels off, honestly out of all of the recent NFS's I found The Run had the best feeling physics, not my preferred but you know what? Drifting wasnt really a thing. So what the way the cars gripped was unrealistic, some how it felt more natural. Look at GTA V, idk about you guys but the way the driving feels in that game is by far my favourite of any arcade racer of modern times. (and drivings not even the main focus) and you know what? You cant really drift. I hope someone understands what im getting at but were trying so hard to go forwards when what we really honestly need is to take a step back. Imagine similar Most Wanted 2005 physics with modern graphics, go back and try playing one of those games (idk if youll all agree but I want physics similar to that again)
THANK YOU. I even prefer San Andreas physics to GTA V which makes all cars go fast and weightless. Older NFS games had perfect grip. Maybe its unrealistic, but it was awesome. You get drift mode in drift events and thats it.
Dude all of you are so damn blind, your cars dont have to drift, go change up your style on the tuning system. But hey blame the devs for giving you the tools right and you not using them.
It had so many flaws but I agree. The cop chases were crazy and the handling felt a bit smoother than 2015. Not to mention the great sound track and unique map with snowy mountains, deserts, forests and beach side streets. On the bad side there was little customization, vehicle health bars and those weird police gadgets. The game was a love/hate type of thing but it was much more enjoyable than nfs2015.
I avoided this game for so long because I heard bad things about it. It was supposed to be this boring, cringy, loot box filled mess. While the voice acting was terrible at times, some of the characters were actually fun to listen to, the loot boxes were not needed, as they only had cosmetic stuff and shit you can unlock in the game, and the gameplay was actually a lot of fun. I have found myself saying "just a couple races" and ending up driving all over and doing the side activities and grinding out cards for the cars I have. So much fun and underrated because it came out and people have that stigma with in game currency. I finished the story and did not spend a dime.

what was wrong with NFS MW 2005? Other than few missing race types, and customization options (neon) and maybe night time (day and night cycle) that game was perfect. Its as close to perfection as possible (for a nfs game, old nfs game) Only fault id say is more cars and more races, basically more of the good game it was
I really agree he has a good point... Outside of a few missing cars, day night cycle and small tweaks nfs most wanted '05 i think is about as good as it is ever gonna get... May not be absolute perfection... But hell it was better then 99 percent of trash on market now

I’m thinking they need to stop trying new things and focus more on street racing and vehicle customization. They need to make a need for speed underground three, a true spiritual successor to the original games.

The cars go from massive understeer to huge oversteer making you feel like you didn’t really get it right and it’s just sloppy but other then that it looks good is fun to play and drive and the upgrades are stupid just let me pick what I want to put on my car please
i think it's cool makes you grind previous races to earn part tokens or money to buy part tokens And when you hav3 your perfect car with a 6×bonus of a speedcard company, it's satisfying
I personally hate it that -NFS tries to be crew and forza. An open world doesn't mean you need to have everything, mountains, swamps, cities, deserts etc. If the map is too big with too little landmarks, it's a booring map. They need to focus on one area, like a big Los Angeles like city with rich areas and ghettos. Basically the Underground 2 freemode map was a perfect example how to make a map. I still remember several landmarks, I just saw and knew where to go right away. If they are making an open world. they need to put a lot more into developing that world because the length of the road is not what matters, is what you experience on it
I really feel, and idk if anyone agrees but the underground series were the BEST nfs games ever followed closely by most wanted and believe that if they went back to what made these titles great, they would see more love from people
Rubber banding? RUBBER BANDING? EA specifically said no robber banding will be used in races. Only the cops will have rubber banding so you can't finish the event just like that.

I've had this since it came out, it's fun, but definitely a dumb grind sometimes. Why does every game nowadays feel like a day job. We buy our consoles and computers to avoid the stress of the worklife, not so we can grind our business battles on GTA or run a mission 300x for a cool cape..

i dont see why people hated rivals, sure it wasn't JDM tuner culture and customization was limited but the gameplay is fun and its absolutely gorgeous, the super cars everywhere is a nice refresher from typical NFS titles. i still play it sometimes. besides i highly doubt they would remake underground 1/2 or most wanted 2005, and if they did it would be EA's typical bullshit mixed in and everyone would hate it.

Why don’t they just remaster NFS Carbon and Mostwanted? Same gameplay style but add a little more to the story. Like an extension... Darius comes back... Razor returns... something of the sort. Put the whole crew member concept back into play. I believe every game after those two, and I’d even go as far as to say after NFS Undercover have been a bust. The story has no real purpose, no main character from game to game. These new NFS titles just don’t suck you in like the classics.

Thank you for saving me $60. I used to have tons of fun back in college with my roommates playing NFS: Most Wanted, and was looking into getting this to relive some of that. However, most of the fun we had came from level 5 cop chases in freeroam, screwing around to pull crazy stunts, or challenging ourselves by fully upgrading cars we didn't use often. It's disappointing that Payback can't really offer much of that to me.

Midnight club is the best arcade racing game ever, it has everything you'd want: varied customization, minimal cut scenes, dope as sound track, dynamic weather, no micro transactions (You could get everything for free in Midnight Club LA once you beat the game). Midnight Club is just perfect, Rockstar needs to sell the franchise because you know they're not gonna waste their time working on a new Midnight Club when they could make more money working on a new GTA, red dead, or Bully game.

To all people that won't buy this game because of that:
I preordered the game before I even knew that they removed freeroam cop chases and was then disappointed. I thought that the game would lose its intense moments. Yet I still decided to try it, and I was surprised that these linear cop chases were actually quite good. Of course, you don't have to improvise and you won't just randomly have to escape them, but it's still good, you're going to get that adrenaline rush that you want. Try it, and you won't be disappointed. You can always refund it.

They've checked pretty much all of these boxes in separate titles, but refuse to put them together into one.
How about you make a video game and see how good you do? I want you to at least do one of those things on that list. I'm sure you can't. Look at what they gave you. A huge map, great customizations from real body kit designers as well as a few of they're own. A nice story that I hope ties in well with future titles. Great sound design, clean graphics, and future cars to be released for free. So what's your problem with this game? You need more to entertain your empty mind? Quit complaining about video games. If you don't like it, don't buy it. It takes a lot of work and a big team to make games and it's sometimes hard when you need to optimize games to run smoothly and work as they should. They're has to be hundreds of pages of coding that goes behind a game like this. And if you take away 1 number... you game is broken. All I'm saying it to try to think of the glass half full instead of it half empty.
That's a very weak argument and it ignores the main point of my comment.
First of all, you don't have to be able to do something well to know when it's done poorly. You don't have to make an amazing film to know The Last Airbender is pretty crap. That's a common, yet poor argument.
Second of all, I haven't even played this game, I'm not discrediting what it has to offer or saying that this is a bad game in any way. You assumed I was inferring that.
Thirdly, stop insulting me, you've no idea who I am and are already telling me I've an empty mind for having an opinion on a bloody video game. Grow up. The first to resort to insults has lost the argument.
I'm well aware that video game development is a huge, grueling effort, especially because I've dabbled in it myself. I was not arguing otherwise.
What I was arguing was that they seem to know what features we want, and seem to be able to create those features that we want, but never put them together into a single game, though they seem to be able to. They will make an amazing game that's missing one or two vital things or has one or two vital flaws in design that let it down and sour the deal. Almost as if they want to be able to improve upon the title without having to be able to innovate too much. Often these aren't even technical accomplishments either but rather design choices (such as rubber banding or loot boxes). They know rubber banding pisses people off. Why not create an option to turn it off, that's not complicated in the slightest.
Lastly, I was merely putting out a thought, a theory. It wasn't meant to be taken too seriously or heavily scrutinized. By all means enjoy the game, I was not attempting to argue it was bad or you were wrong for liking it. Rather I was disappointed that recent games have repeatedly been lacking different, sometimes crucial features that the team were well capable of implementing, as they've done so time and time again in the past. There's a reason the underground games and 2005's most wanted are still some of the best nfs games available, even without the added bonus of nostalgia. They give the people what they ask for.
From what I've seen (to be taken with a grain of salt, again, I've not played it), out of that random list, the game offers:
-Nice graphics
-Diverse tracks
-Enjoyable controls
-Some free roam? Can't remember.
-Robust online but not always online
-Fairly decent customisation
But:
-Any performance customisation is made far less meaningful due to rubber banding.
-The police chases are a step backward, they had it right in 2005 for goodness sake.
- The story seems to be very generic and lackluster. More "acceptable" than truly enjoyable, but that's not fully fair, I haven't experienced it.
-The game doesn't seem to go to any lengths to respect it's players as people, especially with the inclusion of the dreaded loot box progression.
-It doesn't seem to be very original or fresh in any way. Where's the innovation? It feels like they're moving backwards from their previous games in most ways except visually, at least in my eyes.
What if they do make a game with all the said features. Wouldn't that also mark the end of the franchise, to give the fans who's stuck with them all through the years a dream game that they've been asking for? Because once that game is made, the successor would just be copied paste and you know they're people out there that would complain about everything. Maybe instead of making a new game they could just patch it then. If they do that, and if the patches and add-ons are free, then they wouldn't be making any more revenue off of the franchise. This would mean they have to do micro-transaction especially for the cosmetics because that's one of the key selling part of the game. Granted there are games out there that are f2p, but one of the major revenue for it are cosmetics and/or micro-transaction. For example, they'd have to be really creative with the cosmetic items because they're aren't that many real world aftermarket parts. Real world kits that aren't sold by a specific brand/manufacturer are pretty much mods people do with their cars and that's the same as Ghost in-house kits for the game. Then there's the p2w aspect, whether it's completely broken or gives you an advantage over people who actually grinds for the game. People are already complaining about micro-transaction (not saying that I approve of micro-transaction or I don't hate it), maybe they'd do it less if NFS became like this? I don't know whether this would be good for the franchise or not, because if they do this then I guess NFS would just become some sort of mmo/rpg.
I also heard that EA's (too lazy to look for source, I'm just mentioning this, and it's not really relevant to this particular topic) finally going to stop making madden games and just make one and then patch it because i guess they're losing more money making physical copies than release a new one every year?
Idk, im just answering your original post, but i do get the rubber banding cars and the randomize performance cards. It's fairly annoying, because at least the ps2 NFS era locks them away in story mode. In NFS 2015 the game kinda becomes dull if you spend your resources not buying new cars but upgrading like 2 cars, like how I did with the r34(race, drag, etc.) and the brz (drift).
I don't think it's fair to argue that games should be intentionally lackluster in order for the franchise to keep running though, nor do I really think a good game that has most of what people want would be the end of the franchise. It would simply force them to innovate in order to continue on, and rightfully so. Not to mention that they've made several very good games in the past. None of them were the end of the franchise, and they all felt different and interesting in their own ways. (underground 1&2 and most wanted for example, are fairly well cherished by the community). I honestly think that just adding different cars, maybe a different setting, time or premise, a different story, maybe some new and interesting modes, more interesting online, more detailed customisation, a different style of controls, and/or maybe some innovative ideas to spice up the genre every now and again, (such as the crew's new addition of plane and boat racing) would be more than enough to keep the franchise going strong. I know I'd buy more than one title if they were all of that quality. Madden is a different story though because it's obviously a lot harder to innovate or add new content to a game like that, and I think that's a fair move on EA's part. I'm also not arguing for a perfect game if that's what you took from my initial comment, just that fewer balls-be dropped if you know what I mean. NFS doesn't need to be perfect to be very enjoyable, nor does any game of course. Thanks for that comment though, It's rare to see people putting out their opinions peacefully on youtube xD

PREDATOR X The older, most popular games had a more realistic handling model and sudden change to half arcade & half realistic to 100% arcade out of nowhere is quite jarring because I feel the majority of this audience is older so they like the more realistic handling, including me.
NFS Underground 2 was an arcade racer. But you know what made that game fun? Consistently good physics. You knew what the car was gonna do and you knew how to control it. Here you have four modes
- Regular driving
- Brake to drift
- Handbrake into a literal sharp turn that instantly stops your momentum and kills any immersion that you're actually driving a car
- Drifting in the drift modes where you literally only hold left or right because there's no incentive to do anything in that mode, it's laughable how bad it is.

Rebooted i actually think NFS the run was the last game with very good physics, you actually had to counter steer and control your throttle if you ever found yourself doing a drift.
As a car enthusiast I love it. The cosmetic customisation and the performance enhancement systems work amazingly. The drifting and drag features are really good too. I don’t believe that “micro-transactions” are a real problem in this game as the leveling and mission progression happens on a semi regular base and the free shipments come in enough that I don’t need to spend ANY extra money whatsoever. 8.5/10 game

To my fellow ps plus friends, this game is worth the download. Like he said, the story isn’t that good, but the racing makes it worthwhile. If you have been missing out on a the past few games on the franchise, I would definitely give this one a shot. I love the customization and a lot of the races that this game provides.

I really don't like the drifting in this game because it doesn't really take "skill" to drift, like when you start to drift, it like locks into a drift and then you just hit the gas and there you go, that's really the big flaw in the game to me (this is my opinion, hmu with what you think about he drifting) and the Arcady drifting is what some people like, but I like the more harder versions of drifting

My first racing game since Midnight Club 3 on PS2. I was pleasantly surprised by how the story took me in. Felt like I was playing a movie. The dialogue is cringy but the idea of the story is interesting. The racing itself is actually fun. Been a League of Legends and Call of Duty guy for the last 8 years and was hesitant about going to a game not those two but it was really fun.

Don’t believe the negativity you see about this game on the Internet, I believed it and almost missed it. This game is awesome. I’ve been trying to play heat and god it’s so dull. Progression is so slow. Payback is fun and gets you going driving the cars you want to drive and quick. Yeah the loot box thing is dumb but haven’t found any issues with it so far and have tons of parts unlocked pretty quick. The driving Is also the fun Arcady type. Which makes you feel awesome at games. Heat I would say 5/10. Payback is 9/10 for me.

there already was one ... NFS World which unfortunately closed :/ I personally think that NFS World was better than any of the recent NFS games because of huge freeroam (there was even a place where people would park their cars and showoff), cop chases in freeroam , co-op chases and all the good stuff. It felt like a always online NFS MW05 or Carbon with Underground customization to some extent. Daily missions to earn you stuff , duels , drags but the bad parts were its pay2win mechanics which honestly didn't destroy the joy for me (I spent maybe 10 dollars for some car customizations I really wanted).
I honestly hate EA for ruining old games and closing servers then not giving open source for the game so other fans of the game could take it online.

in my opinion i hate that card based upgrade system..they did it for micro-transactions as you say,and that is such a turn down for me, irl we choose our parts to uprgrade cars, we don't randomly win them at the end of a race
i want to buy upgrades , not to win them by luck in a spin
they should have stuck with the clasic upgrade system from 2015 that (i think) everyone knows and loves

Vlad Alex i really REALLY love the upgrade system in nfs 15, it's clear, simple, and pretty much well done.
No cops in free roam is not that big of a deal for me but i would rather have them in free roam.
What really bothers me is the fact that there is no multiplayer free roam, but am sure Ghost will figure out something as an update.

I on the other hand love this game,its still not perfect,but it has a lot of cool returning features.Neons are back.,air suspension is back,SUVs are back its all good for a hardcore nfs fan.The only thing that i dont like is that brake to drift is on all cars (but you can change it i think),and that crash cams are back,those are just annoying.
Edit:you can disable crash cams too so its good.
Miki's GamePlay brake for drift turns off automatically once u get into the game a little, that's just what I have experienced
I find it thoroughly depends on the car and the upgrades you have taken as well. Like my racer is incredible hard to drift but i took away like any air time it can get and stuff like that. I want it to stick to the ground. I do find that the drift car I have takes almost nothing to have it sideways. Sometimes hard to do anything with it other than drift. My least favorite thing is no map tracking for roaming racers and that is sometimes balls to mark a location and get there and they are where you left from to begin with haha .Scaling of AI is really lame too since it is on the card system and that levels your car. I have entered races that say you need like 140 with a 290 car and I will find the race tough. This is crazy since I have a car with double the points. They should not be able to keep up at all. Whats the point of me getting cards if AI cars despite the level they say they are can keep up. I know it is in a whole game wants to keep you trying but hell when I just want to go back and do some races for quick cash it is pretty lame.

After having beaten the game, I can say that NFS Payback isn't bad per se, but it's a game I'd remove if my PS4 is out of space.

They need to create the characters and character dynamics that emit that of the Need For Speed: Carbon character and story, where the drive and plot advancements create characters that feel notoriously badass and 'to-be-feared' in their own right. Where the crews they command are intuitively gang-esque and criminal (to an extent) creating a realistic, in a motivational sense, yet dystopian, in a hierarchical sense, storyline.
I am, too, a crazy person who has played (almost) every need for speed game and as such I gotta say this game really did try (maybe-- to it's detriment-- a bit too hard) to do something new and in many ways it brought out the best of nfs.
Payback is more of a revenge game in my opinion

Man the true essence of street racing was felt in Underground 2 only. The whole concept of being able to customize and tune your car and enter these different kinda events is awesome. Even NFS prostreet was a bit similar but it had its huge deal of flaws. But i want something like a combination of MW and UG2. That would be dope 🤘🏼

Not a single pedestrian makes the gameworld look incredibly dead, not saying they should go all-out GTAstyle but some life in the streets would make for a more immersive game. Aswell as what you guys mentioned about there's barely any copchases which is sad because that was what made the original Most Wanted and Hot Pursuit so longlasting. Overly scripted with poor animations, poor physics, arcade gameplay with very little to be like "Oh wow, that just happened" and giggle profusely.

I like the game, but I wish it was like Rivals. I loved NFS: Rivals. I've had so much fun with my little bros playing as cops & robbers. It was SO FUN! Payback is good, but Rivals tops any racing game for me. I hope there's a sequel or just make every NFS like Rivals. Oh & one more thing... BRING BACK SPLIT-SCREEN!
Im a fan of the pre-criterion nfs. I have played all nfs series. Im a fan of forza games along with gran turismo. This game i will most likely pass on. This review/ advise is view good and in depth.

I loved this game a lot. It felt manageable to play, while still being difficult enough to be enjoyable! I haven't finished a single player game in a very long time, and this one had me glued to my seat for more.

I honestly think drifting has ruined modern NFS. Look back on all the games we loved when we were younger, Underground 1 and 2, Most Wanted, Carbon, hell even the original Hot Pursuit 1 and 2. You wanna know what they all had in common? There was no "drifting" yes powerslides were possible but for the most part the cars just gripped the road and for an arcade style game it honestly felt more natural. I find with many modern arcade racers the cars handle like theyre on rails or something. Drifting always feels off, honestly out of all of the recent NFS's I found The Run had the best feeling physics, not my preferred but you know what? Drifting wasnt really a thing. So what the way the cars gripped was unrealistic, some how it felt more natural. Look at GTA V, idk about you guys but the way the driving feels in that game is by far my favourite of any arcade racer of modern times. (and drivings not even the main focus) and you know what? You cant really drift. I hope someone understands what im getting at but were trying so hard to go forwards when what we really honestly need is to take a step back. Imagine similar Most Wanted 2005 physics with modern graphics, go back and try playing one of those games (idk if youll all agree but I want physics similar to that again)

THANK YOU. I even prefer San Andreas physics to GTA V which makes all cars go fast and weightless. Older NFS games had perfect grip. Maybe its unrealistic, but it was awesome. You get drift mode in drift events and thats it.
I mean personally, I wouldn't prefer San Andreas over 5, but we both know whats up :)
Dude all of you are so damn blind, your cars dont have to drift, go change up your style on the tuning system. But hey blame the devs for giving you the tools right and you not using them.
Ghost if you didnt tune for drift in 2015 you were at a disadvantage, grip was useless...
I still feel that Rivals is one of the best NFS games since Most Wanted...
It had so many flaws but I agree. The cop chases were crazy and the handling felt a bit smoother than 2015. Not to mention the great sound track and unique map with snowy mountains, deserts, forests and beach side streets. On the bad side there was little customization, vehicle health bars and those weird police gadgets. The game was a love/hate type of thing but it was much more enjoyable than nfs2015.

I avoided this game for so long because I heard bad things about it. It was supposed to be this boring, cringy, loot box filled mess. While the voice acting was terrible at times, some of the characters were actually fun to listen to, the loot boxes were not needed, as they only had cosmetic stuff and shit you can unlock in the game, and the gameplay was actually a lot of fun. I have found myself saying "just a couple races" and ending up driving all over and doing the side activities and grinding out cards for the cars I have. So much fun and underrated because it came out and people have that stigma with in game currency. I finished the story and did not spend a dime.
Now this is a good comment, better than the assholes who pretend like they played underground. This game doesn't really have flaws imo, id even think the va is that bad

what was wrong with NFS MW 2005? Other than few missing race types, and customization options (neon) and maybe night time (day and night cycle) that game was perfect. Its as close to perfection as possible (for a nfs game, old nfs game)

The cars go from massive understeer to huge oversteer making you feel like you didn’t really get it right and it’s just sloppy but other then that it looks good is fun to play and drive and the upgrades are stupid just let me pick what I want to put on my car please

-NFS tries to be crew and forza. An open world doesn't mean you need to have everything, mountains, swamps, cities, deserts etc. If the map is too big with too little landmarks, it's a booring map. They need to focus on one area, like a big Los Angeles like city with rich areas and ghettos. Basically the Underground 2 freemode map was a perfect example how to make a map. I still remember several landmarks, I just saw and knew where to go right away. If they are making an open world. they need to put a lot more into developing that world because the length of the road is not what matters, is what you experience on it
I really feel, and idk if anyone agrees but the underground series were the BEST nfs games ever followed closely by most wanted and believe that if they went back to what made these titles great, they would see more love from people

Rubber banding? RUBBER BANDING? EA specifically said no robber banding will be used in races. Only the cops will have rubber banding so you can't finish the event just like that.
i like it, its a fun game... BUT i have 2 major beefs... 1- i HATE the Card Upgrade System, let me buy the Type of parts i want! ...& 2- i know its "arcade" but in this day & age there is No Excuse for not having More Adjustability with the car set ups... but on a high note, as someone who usually HATES DRIFTING on any racing game, i have to admit, nfs payback has made drifting fun! ...to be honest, the drifting makes me curse & throw things, but its still "fun" nonetheless
