- I knew that this fancy BMW convertible couldn't stay away from the shop for too long :D
This time the warning message on the dash is telling the driver that there is a malfunction with the turn signals.
What is the problem?
And how much $$ will it take to solve?

I used to see some of that with the DWP Fleet Vehicles. Mostly vibration that loosened the socket contacts. One thing my Dad taught me. If the bulb is good but makes intermittent contact, put the bulb upside down, use a solder iron/gun and "gently" apply heat to the contact (s) base then melt some solder to the contact. Takes a little trying, you could use an old or burned out bulb to try the repair.
It eliminates bad connections. If the bulb has "one way installation" pins, you'll need to push on the bulb a little more to lock it in the socket, but makes the pins a stronger ground in their positions.
Give it a try. You fixed it!
In the mid 90's while employed by Toyota we had a round of Japanese manufactured bulbs that did not have enough material on the ground tab. It was repaired with a different manufactured bulb from another company or a drop of solder on the ground tab.

I can’t see fixing turn signals on BMWs because most BMW drivers don’t use them.

Good work Ivan. I probably wouldn't have checked the bulb but I would have put Deoxit on the new one. I use it on everything electrical. The only thing I have that's newer than 2006 is my 2016 Honda lawnmower.

Why not also add a dab of solder to the end of the bulb?
I was surprised he didn't do that. The contact is just a solder blob, if it gets too hot it melts and flattens as seen in this case. Standard electronics solder works fine.
Yep once you fix the over heating issue you can reflow the solder to make it look pretty again.
Yes! I couldnt believe when he grinded even more of the solder away.
Those bulbs are so cheap I can't believe one would ever want to repair it. And it's not any dealer-special type, but an ordinary PY21W bulb
@@5Dale65 Yep. I would have simply binned it and popped in the spare I keep in the glovebox then got another one next time I was passing a parts store. I certainly wouldn't be grinding anything soft like solder it on a stone either - who needs the hassle of a pinned grinder wheel?

its a customers car he would have charged labour for the repair when a new bulb would have been less then a $1
A lot of the older 80s and 90s cars used to do the same thing. I side would blink fast and they other side would blink it’s normal speed. Could always tell by the faster blinking turn signal that it had a bad bulb or bad connection to the bulb. Sometimes the ground would go bad on one side causing that side to blink fast also. Nice job Ivan. I think you gave that bulb another day to die. Hopefully not for quite a while.
In Mother Russia, there are no Autozones to buy light bulbs, especially amber ones. :) Most people wouldn't repair the bulb, but it's great to watch you do it Ivan. You remind me of my Dad... in a good way. Great videos. I hope your channel keeps growing.

@Bobby Brady A little geography: the term "Euro" describes all countries that are generally in Europe, and have the "Euro" as their official currency. Europe is not a country, but Germany, France, Belgium etc are.
Most people in Europe, and especially Germany have their cars serviced professionally, remember that the legal maximum traffic speeds are much higher than the US, and Germany has quite a lot of their Autobahn unrestricted, with only a recommendation of 160 km (100 miles) per hour. Hobby work on your car will kill people at these speeds.
Compare to the US where it is only necessary to travel at 65 mph, some states have 75, so cars and tyres are designed only for theses speeds, plus driving is mainly straight, with very slow 90 degree turns. Tyres capable of high mileage are popular, compared to Europe, where higher performance of grip etc are preferred.

I am surprised that the socket is not connected directly to the CAN bus so each bulb has its own lamp control module. That will happen in the future

Hi, guys. QUICK FIX: I had left turning light, adaptive headlight, parking light malfunction. While I'm sure it points to a larger issue: Pop up the top access to the headlight, twist off the round cover and point a hair dryer into the headlight assembly for like 15 minutes or half hour to dry everything out in there. (This works for condensation inside the lens, too.) Happy DIY-ing and saving money! I drove in heavy slush for a few hours and got these errors and this drying method worked.
What's a BMW driver doing using a turn signal? He needs remedial BMW driver training.
opl500 when I got my BMW there was a VSH on how to drive and operator a BMW like a a$$ and turn signals were options

Seriously you should just change the bulb. My 06 530i it's not the same bulbs in them since I got the car. They're not expensive, they're nothing special! It was probably just a bad manufactured bulb.
Yeah that's not even the issue. I replaced my bulbs and it didn't do anything. Nice try though
@@meesau2112 Yup, a lot of the time the bulb and the housing are fine. The problem is the wiring in the headlamp assembly. bad BMW wiring. I've seen in a few E90 BMWs
I have a 2014 3 series BMW and I had a "parking lamp malfunction" error I replaced the bulb problem fixed. "Fog lamp malfunction" replaced the bulb problem fixed. Not sure why the need to over complicate something that's simple.

Thank you for your advice. It is the contact of the housing of the light bulb that causes the BMW x2 signal light not to work.
Nice diagnostics dude! You definitely solved the actual problem which was corroded terminals on the holder. Replacing the bulb would have not done much.
The bottom of these types of bulbs is solder, so...yeah, you had a bad contact that caused excessive heat. Good job with the fix.
This Turnsignal Bulbs (and most off the Others too) are pulsewidth modulated (PWM) so they get allways 12V when the Pulse is on. (You can check this with your Pico.) This allows to drive the Bulbs with every dimm that you want. It only needs programmed on the Lightmodule. Many german cars today owens this technics. VW buid this in since Golf V And Yes its possible to do settings via OBD...
Normaly there is a Flicker (the Pulses) but you cant see this becouse the Bulp needs Time to glow up also to fade off, so it looks like 5V dimmed. With an LED you can see this flickering... Also with an Oszi like a Pico...

This new RoHS solder is total crap on anything that gets hot.
My real question- why does this high end car still use incandescent bulbs?
None of this would happen with LEDs.
The problem with solder is that the EU banned the good old lead based thing, as the vapours of lead is bad for health or something. You can still buy and use it at home, but it's illegal to use in the industry anymore.
Led the driver fails and the whole assembly is junk

My first thought was, how would a BMW driver know a turn signal was out because they never use them. Then I see it is also the parking light so the computer would know.

I recall seeing a bulb on something years ago that looked exactly like that. I put a dab of solder on the end and rounded it off in the grinder. Good as new, lol!

BMW would have charged him $450 for the front control module plus $150 labor for the bulb change.

@@fryreartechnology7611 Just a guess. I had a 2000 323i that had plenty of troubles with window regulators. I had it for a couple of years and sold it. Fun to drive. Unreliable.
Bulbs? Thought BMW used blinkerfluid, because everyone driving a BMW seems to be running out of it

I'm surprised that the exterior lights are flashing fast on the right side. On a lot of cars with computer controlled turn signals, the exterior lights will always flash at their normal speed even if a bulb is out. Only the green indicators on the dashboard and the tick-tock sound will be sped up. Volkswagens, Audis, Porsches, Hyundais, Kias, Genesis, Mercedes, and a bunch of other cars are like that.

The molten tip on the bulb was just solder. You can jus put some fresh solder and you're good to go!

Maybe it was that lead-free ROHS-compliant solder notorious for oxidizing and cracking when used for circuit boards.

@@zeke112964 That's because it has a mechanical bimetallic relay. I'm surprised this Barvarian Money Waster appears to as well, rather than a solid state timer. Unless it's got current sensing that speeds up the frequency as a secondary alert to the driver to an outage. Many people seem immune to dash warnings - mostly because they're increasingly overused unnecessarily so we've become somewhat desensitised to all the beeping and flashing now since it's not unusual - I barely notice when my phone notifies me of anything these days - it's become just background noise to ignore.
Other manufactures run bulbs at reduced voltage. ESP. At rear. About time! Saves wires, increases life etc. FET will drive them
Did a quick rock auto check. Just a 21 watt bulb. Couple bucks. Amazingly its cheap! Still, i would have tried to reuse it too, plus you would have to travel to a parts store. Weird way they change the voltage for signal / and park lamp.
Common on my Jeep and PT Cruiser bulbs. I keep a set of sockets in my stock. Also live in PA.
New solder on base or new bulb, very common on older bulbs to pit solder at base from higher resistance.

I just checked Rock Auto, looks like less than $2.00 for a new bulb. Next time you order I would get a couple and keep them on the shelf.
I think removing material fron the end contact is not a long term fix, so I would invite your customer to return and you replace both bulbs.
I had a turn signal socket on my 1998 Chevrolet full sized pickup melt and a side marker light socket melt on my son's 1998 Chevrolet Cavalier automobile melt. I have never had any other automobile melt a bulb socket and I have been driving since 1964 and have owned many different automobiles from American manufacturers and several that were over 200,000 miles when they were sold. I know the sockets were prone to fail because when I went to the auto supply store they had the sockets in blister packs for sale on the aisle racks. Of course I live in a rural area near the interstate and often drive for many miles without turning on a turn signal so my driving pattern is not a reliable indication of most other drivers.

Had this problem on an older E36 bmw with the brake and tail lights, and also a newer for ford transit van. Just look for the melted plastic lol

You want to use good bulbs on BMWs if someone put a cheap bulb in there that can happen! Also since the module controls the voltage can you use a led bulb in that car? Great videos love it when there's no parts required!
That's the normal 21W indicator lamp used in most EU cars, I'm guessing the parking light thing is a programmable feature on cars exported to the US. Just saves having to have two different lamps and two different bulbs I guess.
When I got my BMW it was a option to have turn signals. They did it because BMW drivers... well we all know lol. Takes a a$$ to know a a$$ right. Thank you for the video I was rolling when I read the title thinking this is a problem between the seat and steering wheel.
Replaceable turn signal bulbs ? What was BMW thinking ? (Found a cold solder joint at one wire on a 120v distribution point in an old previously ok oscilloscope just once in my entire career. Just goes to show when solder and electricity get together and given enough time, even what seems impossible is possible.)
Interesting the bulbs are all module controlled, yet when a bulb is out the others blink fast. They've programmed it to behave like an old mechanical flasher would, and gave an error code. May as well go into limp home mode!

I realize I’m more than a year late, but If I’m very seriously in a pinch and can’t change a $1 bulb, I’ve had luck in the past cleaning off the old positive contact with an iron and some wick, and resoldering the center with some quality silver solder.
If the BMW doesn't have an M or an X in front of it, it was made in Mexico for N America. The finest Mexican build quality. At German prices.

loving all the BMW turn signal comments. cracking me up. this is one time the no parts required took 10 times as long to fix as swapping the holder and bulb out.
But bulbs and holders don't grow on trees or cornfields. This was 100% faster and 100% more affordable than driving to the dealer for some specialty part ;)

I had a tail light problem on a MINI. The problem was bad contact between the bulb holder and the light housing. It was so bad that the metal contact was burnt off. It was a bad design. The owner always leaves the head lights on because there is auto turn-off function probably also speeded up the problem.

I have a 2019 bmw x2 m35i and both my rear signal lights don’t work I checked the bulbs they are good and I have brake lights and park lights the front signals work fine just blink fast watching your video I seen your wiring schematic for a quick second and it looks like the rear control module works the signals any ideals maybe check to see if the rear module is getting power and where it’s located I don’t have access to wiring schematics
I’m here for the BMW trashing comments for a light bulb. I think basically every car manufacturer after 2016 is using modules to control lights,windows etc.
Never seen a twin filiment bulb on a BMW. Those bulbs are very standard however their are some very low quality ones that will only last a few months and may erroneously trigger the failure message.

I have had this repair done twice..second one was for free. My 13 Tacoma kept melting the wire plug for my passenger side fog lamp. When it was repaired the first time, after some time the plastic plug with wires in it was almost a melted blob. Local Toyota dealer told me the first repair, the the tech used an after market plug. Second time an OEM plug was used. Now...I use fog lamps sparingly. I will buy a front brush guard for my truck and get amber HELLA fog lamps.
Just replace the bulbs with LED problem solved 😉
@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics Only problem with LED...They suck in winter. The headlight lens gets iced up with snow and ice because of a lack of heat. This is why my fog lamps will remain halogen. Halogens give off heat and in winter that is a good thing.

Nice one Ivan. I have used Deox-It products before and they are good for cleaning contacts in cars that often get a dose of the crusties. I have used it before on BMW diversity antenna electronics which are very sensitive to crusties with the gold protector solution applied afterwards and it worked well. Funnily enough I ordered some Deox-IT from the US to the UK last week. A bit of a worry that car is having a contact issue like that. Looks to be some bad design maybe, although I had a 2015 M235 until recently with the same indicators and never had this issue. Maybe somehow the right side was not sealed into the headlamp unit properly and excess moisture has been getting in that side or maybe the right side headlamp unit has a bad seal around the indicator area.....??
Having this exact problem. Paid 2400 for a new headlight assy and got a turn signal malfunction. I guess they threw in the same old bulb

I have a 2011 sedan sedan and I have changed the bulb and housing . Headlight assembly works fine just not the turn signal!! Is there a fuse specific to the front turn signal in the headlight assembly??
It's just a standard 21W indicator bulb that has been in (european?) cars since the 50's (Except that it is orange but that is also very common)
Had this issue, swapped out the bulbs for new and had the same issue, I sprayed the contact with wd40 & presto good as new 5 min fix
i had same issue the other day. new bulb and cleaned it, shipped it and was told may need socket if problem comes back. mine was also a front right. i dont remember what model the euro shit box was
Replace the light fixtures with Honda fixtures. Then replace the motor, transmission, body panels, seats and everything else with Honda parts. There are even numerous places where you can buy an entire kit of Honda parts already assembled.
dsrekjw I own a Honda, a BMW, and a Lexus. My Honda makes me want to give up driving and Uber everywhere. My BMW reminds me that driving is enjoyable and my Lexus IS the real bulletproof reliable car. I will say almost 10 years and my bmw has been great... know lots of very happy bmw owners too. I’m not happy with Honda engineering. VCM garbage anyone? $400 motor mounts? Transmission made of glass? Oh yes sir, your car is SUPPOSED to shake like that to get better gas mileage. My next SUV will be German. It’s worth it.
IMO Hondas had some "soul" until about the year 2001. Then all hope was lost :(
Pine Hollow Auto Diagnostics No doubt. I had an Integra GSR back in day (stock) until someone drove into the side of it. Still miss that thing.
Frankly my bmw has been solid and parts are reasonable compared to the Lexus and even the Honda. Buddy of mine has a bone stock 2007 328i with over 240k miles that he used to fill in a season while his dedicated race car was down. Never let him down even on the track. He thinks it’s even got the original clutch. They are quirky but not junk.
I would still have replaced bulb, loss of material on bottom contact might affect the spring load and allow it to malfunction again. (Less Pressure)
I bent the bottom terminal up a bit to compensate ;)
A Bmw dealer would charged 800 for this repair

Awesome. Taking the time to fix the problem and save the customer money. Time is money plus gaining knowledge along the way. I agree stay away from BMW.
So what are your thoughts on the products upon first use?
With products like these it's impossible to know how well they work until a let of time has passed. Let's see how many years the contacts last!

Hi Sir I have a 328d 2016 with a led light I check all my fuse all ok I had replace the right front flasher module under the fender and am having the same problem flashe in the back and the mirror but not in the front I do not know what to do any clue thank you.
I'm a bit dissapointed Ivan ;) When I saw the symptoms I thought this would be a 5 min video incl bonus. Hyperblink is pretty common (for like 20+ years) to indicate a bad bulb (connection). Just some oxidation on the contacts. And yeah, the bottom contact is just solder aka pretty low melting point. And a soldering iron would have been an easy solution ;) But then again, it's just a dead standard 21W bulb...
10:00 Other way around ;) It just gives 12V and senses the current. And for parking light probably just PWM :)
Ah I got carried away with the DeOxit. What is the root cause of a bad contact on a 3-year-old bulb? It will be a good test of the product at least :)

I’m having a similar issue on my BMW F10 (5 series).
But my front right daytime running lights & turning signals would suddenly flash really fast after a long driving distance (around 20 minutes of driving), and will not stop unless I turn the car off and then turn it back on, the problem disappears.
Can anybody tell me what the issue might he? Could it be the module or the headlight itself?
Those plugs for the bulb are prone to fail when it’s variable voltage. The tend to burn the bottom of the bulb

Hi Ivan, the change between low (5W dimmed) voltage and high (21W fully lit) creates heat and actually bad connections in those sockets. Almost all cars with combined tail light/brake light also has this issue and in many cases the “faulty bulb sign” will come on in the dash even though the bulb is working. First time I encountered the problem was back in mid 00’s on Opel here in Denmark and after that a bunch of other brands. The sockets are usually the same and I believe that Valeo are the ones who makes these for OE.

I wondered why my Saturn bulbs lasted so long. When one finally burned out found dialectic grease from the factory.

I have that issue on my 2006 Ford Focus ZX3!
This has happened twice to our 2019 BMW X2 suv. Both times in the rear tail lamp. First the left one, which the dealership replaced the whole tail lamp- now months later the right tail lamp turn signal is malfunctioning
My X2 rear passenger tail bulb has been malfunctioning for a while. I got the light bulb replaced by BMW for $100 then a couple weeks later, the same side rear began to malfunction again. It’s ridiculous at this point
