I jus t took my boat out and have F225 twin on there. I have had the boat about a year and they did a full service when I purchased theboat. I reviewed the service history and they replaced the annodes and the thermostatsamong other stuff. This weekend I took it out and one of the engines keeps gettign a temp alarm. The engine was not sending water out of the telltale port. I cleaned the port and it started sending water through it but the alarm will not clear. The engine will run about a minute and then alarm comes back in. I have taken this to a tech 3 times and each time I seem to get a large bill and new problem. Thanks and great videos.
@Rick Lacombe Hello, sorry to hear about that. What year are your engines? Sadly, you might be looking at midsection kits. Those F225's from about 2002-2005 the midsections will corrode out and they will overheat at idle because they are dumping water into the exhaust and not cooling the engine properly. Hopefully this isn't your issue, but it is not an uncommon thing for the older F225's.
@@RickLacombe oh no, yeah, 2003 is the prime year for this issue. No, sorry I dont have any videos on this. What you need to do is pull the lower unit and look up in the exhaust to see if it has a bunch of white spots and holes. Then you can also take a piece of a garden hose and tighten that onto the water tube. Turn on the water and see if water comes pouring out the exhaust before getting into the engine. It's usually pretty clear once you have the lower unit off and look up in the midsection. Yamaha sells these kits at cost now for a few years and they are usually around $800 or so. It is extremely important that you get the right kit based on your engine year and PID or primary identification number. They have different kits for different years so look it up through your PID for who ever does it, if this is infact what's going on with your engine. Thank you! Yes, that is the beginning signs of the mid section failing. These 250's usually didn't have that much of a problem with the midsections. Usually it was the 225's and only from about 2002-2004. So you shouldn't see that, but it isn't impossible, if it's starting to look like the moon and run louder, then you might be looking at a mid section kit :( We haven't done a mid section for a while now, but if I'm remembering correctly, I think Yamaha was selling the kits basically at cost, with not mark up, because it was such an issue. Hey Ken! Thank you! No, these anodes haven't been done for probably 8 years or so and maybe 600 hours. If you change them out regularly, like say every 300-400 hours or every 3-4 years. They don't normally look like that. You can usually change them out in a matter a half hour to a hour. This one is just it's age and not doing them. The thermostats look like that more often than you would think though. Even at 100-200 hours. That is because of the salt of the water, but also most of the boats spend a lot of time at the sand bar and running in shallower water. Sucking up the sand and crude. Most Yamaha 2-Strokes have anodes on the block, but they are internal anodes, if I remember correctly. It's been awhile since I've done one! Yamaha's 40, 50, 60, 75, 90, 130 2-Strokes were some of the best engines on the market. I think Yamaha dominated the market all through the 90's and early 2000's with these engines. Yeah, it's pretty harsh anywhere in warm saltwater or Caribbean type environments :( this one was left for a long time but after a few years this will build up like that. I'd say 5-6 years with normal use and not changing them. Then 2-3 years with lots of use and not changing them :)

Hi, i want to buy a used 4 stroke engine to replace my old 2 stroke 250hp v6, can you tell me the yamaha 4 stroke 200hp 2002 is a good option or is it too old? Thanks
Hello! We wouldn't take off a 250 and put on a 200HP four-stroke. 2002 you might be looking at a midsection and it's also really slow compared to that 250 two-stroke!
@@BornAgainBoating The 4 stroke engine is also v6. I do offshore fishing and the fuel economy is very important, I have spent more than half of the gasoline consumption than a 200HP 4 stroke. This is the main reason, so I think a 2002 engine already looks very old. As a professional and with all the experience you have, what would be your recommendation or advice? Many thanks for your attention.
Hey Fred, you can use any garden hose attachment that will screw in. But I'm wondering what your midsection looks like? Those 02 225's had that midsection corrosion issue, I hope yours isn't starting to go.
You have to pay for it, but I got mine from www.selocmarine.com/seloc_online/index.php. They were very helpful in figuring what I needed for my outboard.

I've got a motostop filter wrench, it's like the Yamaha one but it's more expensive and you have to grind one side of it down because it won't fit into some engines :( Here's a different one from Marine Tech Tools that is smaller and cheaper! I've been thinking about getting it and swapping it out :/ amzn.to/3biu7M6
Thanks
Do you put any grease on the thermostats?
Not really, mainly just on the bolts that keep the housing on
I had no idea that warm saltwater environment is that nasty on the innards of outboards. Is this also a lack of maintenance and if so, how long did this level of clogging take?
Yeah, it's pretty harsh anywhere in warm saltwater or Caribbean type environments :( this one was left for a long time but after a few years this will build up like that. I'd say 5-6 years with normal use and not changing them. Then 2-3 years with lots of use and not changing them :)
Thanks for the info. Spoiled with CA delta freshwater I think.
Lmao that starboard motor smh... Fred Flintstone ingenuity at its finest 😉. I find it very hard to believe that it’s only been 100 hrs since it was last serviced. I would say I’m shocked that someone would actually run that lower unit like that but I’m not.
Lol yeah, you see some pretty ridiculous stuff lol I kind of believe the same thing, but it's what they said lol It's amazing how durable some of the stuff is though lol
the oil filter on my Subaru is surround by hot exhaust pipes and you’re guaranteed to spill oil on them so i get that burning oil smell next time I drive it. It’s basically a trap from a Saw movie.
Hahahah that's funny. It's crazy how some of these engines have been designed. It's like the engineers are playing a joke, because you can't really see someone looking at that and saying, "Yes, this is great! That's the perfect location!"
I spray brake parts cleaner on any excess oil spillage it dramatically helps that situation.
@@jeffmckinsey8769 right! When I first started doing these and hadn't gotten the rag trick down. Sometimes it would get so bad I would have to dump a bunch of degreaser in the pan and then hose it out lol
Excime sir I'm mechanic 2stoka and 4 stoke because 4 stoke timing system full I'm watching
One of my big pet peeves is oil dripping into the engine shrouds, so I am using an old Harley-Davidson trick that I found works on these engines. I have an F225, so it may be a tad easier, but the oil filter tool keeps the cowlings clean. ruclips.net/video/SJnu0-Q_xgk/видео.html (I am not setup for monetizing, so this is not for self-promotion, just helping others out with an idea). BTW, thanks for the anode replacement info. Now back into boating again, I am so glad I watched this video. I used to have old Mercury/Mariner 2-strokes, there was no engine anodes back then, so without seeing this video, I would have not known to change them.
👍👍
DAM I run a opti and would buy an EVINRUDE way less hassle.
Lol yeah, these engines were a little over complicated lol
Where can I find the remote key switches?
You have to make them: ruclips.net/video/op8wSLiG9hA/видео.html
DOES THAT DISCOUNT CODE STILL WORK? TRIED A COUPLE TIMES AND IT SAID NO LONGER VALID?

No reason to replace stat gaskets ?
The new stats come with a new gasket. You just pull the whole old thing out and put the new one in
Hi,
i want to buy a used 4 stroke engine to replace my old 2 stroke 250hp v6, can you tell me the yamaha 4 stroke 200hp 2002 is a good option or is it too old?
Thanks
Many thanks for your attention.
oil on water pump good idea
Where are you located
Where can I get one of those red hose nozzles?my 02 f225 only pees in a bucket.
Hey Fred, you can use any garden hose attachment that will screw in. But I'm wondering what your midsection looks like? Those 02 225's had that midsection corrosion issue, I hope yours isn't starting to go.
@@BornAgainBoating ok great thank you
The ol legends!!
What does that service cost one one outbound?
I believe it's somewhere around $1000, maybe a little more, maybe less. Depends a lot on who is doing it and what the labor rate is :)
Hye sir I need Yamaha , Mercury service manual where I can download it's possible,
Hello, I'm not sure where a good place to download service manuals is. Sorry, If I come across somewhere I will let you know!
You have to pay for it, but I got mine from www.selocmarine.com/seloc_online/index.php. They were very helpful in figuring what I needed for my outboard.
You pop off the hood... and there is another hood!
Dear god, that’s the worst maintained outboard I’ve ever seen.
And here I was, worried about the tiny bit of white corrosion I had on my anode cups after 1000 hours. I’m on my 4th anode replacement.
I’m so OCD with my maintenance I was worried about the white chalky looking anode around my cups. Then I found out that this dude exists and I just realized how spotless my outboard is.
How the heck do you let an engine go that far on service? Wow. Insane
Jesus it's a shame that my 24yr old ox66 looks 100x better than this. Thats why I laugh when people tell me to buy 4stroke. I tell them my ox66 will outperform their 60k twin 250
gday mate that is the ugliest engine i have ever seen did anyone flush it ever?
