A detailed video on "how to shape, cab & polish agates".
In this, the first video of our new series called "Rockhounding Secrets - Polishing Agates, Rocks and Gems" we are going to take you on an adventure in the process of shaping & polishing a yellow moss agate, with jasper inclusions from A to Z.
In subsequent videos, in this series (Rockhounding Secrets - Polishing Agates, Rocks and Gems) we will show you step by step on how to create cabochons plus shape and polish lot's of different kinds of agates, petrified wood, jasper, geodes, agate nodules, thundereggs, precious opal, common opal and crystals.

I've been watching a few of your videos today and we share a lot of the same ideas like the stone will show you what shape it wants to be. I have another theory when I'm hiking that nature will tell you when you've collected enough for the day. Whether you cease to find any more material or maybe you fall into the river completely. She lets you know when you're done for the day lol. Anyway, I really like the creativity you put in some of your pieces. I would never have thought to fill that void with amethyst pieces. Your so right ✅ in a world full of knock off type products, it's refreshing to see truly unique pieces come from finding a cool rock to cutting, shaping and polishing it. Therapy is a great way describe finding agates then cutting them and polishing them! Each part is therapeutic in their own right.

Really pretty agate! I found this channel because I had seen a store on Etsy that was selling these picture agates, agates that looked like they had little landscapes in them almost, and he had them polished so dang clear almost. But because of that high polish he was able to sell them for a very high price and so I was looking for a video to see how in the heck he got them to such a high polish! Not that I am even slightly into doing that myself, just wanted to see how it all worked. Thank you for your video it was really helpful. New Sub!!

Hello! I just bought a house on Crowley's ridge in AR and I'm covered up in jasper, agate, chert and onyx... I think. I could really use some help.
Hi Kim, well first off congratulations on your new home. Second can we come visit...lol... Seriously though, how can we be of help? What are your rockhounding goals, what do you want to create or do with your new found treasure from Loess canyon?
If everything I'm finding is actually what I think it is, I'm sitting on 15 acres of ancient Mississippi sediment. The previous owner of this place dug out a gravel pit, sold some to the city and paved every driveway and walkway on the property with this gravel. I can't go on a stroll here without stuffing my pockets with interesting looking rocks. I found one crack in the earth that seems to be spilling out what looks to be all banded onyx. I'm going to try tumbling and and maybe some lapidary but since I do have a new house to decorate, I was thinking of cutting and polishing slabs and using clear epoxy resin to make agate tabletops, counter tops and/or tile.
What I need help with is identifying the rocks. Most of what I'm seeing on the internet is little nuggets of banded agate which is much easier to see light and depth. I'm finding rocks bigger than my fist all over the place but with calcite skin and the sheer size it's difficult to know which ones of these big honkers I should be cherry picking. They are literally everywhere. I'd have to discuss it with the hubby but a visit would be interesting. We do value our privacy.

Hi Tricia, thank you and of course. This entire shape and polish process took just a bit under 2 hours not including working with the camera and a couple of short breaks.
Do you put a sponge pad behind your polishing pad??

We just use the center screw to mount the polishing pads to the supplied backing plates and it works great

Do you think I could sand it by hand and still get this shine? I have a 1000 grit regular sandpaper. And will I need to use it with water? Thank you :)
Thanks for your question... We really recommend if your going to do it by hand, then get diamond grit sandpaper in several grits...100, 500, 1000, 1500 and 3000 at the least. Then for your final polish you'll need some diamond paste in 15k to 30k. Lastly by hand have patience because it's going to take a lot of work and time.

Isn't it dangerous with the fingers ?
No not really, you can get abrasions, especially on the lower grit disc's. It's also a good idea to use a dop stick with the smaller rocks and agates.

Why do I have scratches in my agates after all stages of polishing?
Hi 👋 Julie, sorry to hear about your issues.
Some things to remember:
1. Make sure each stage is completely uniform in it's finish, before moving to the next grit.
a. 60 grit shaped
b. 180 same consistent surface all over the rock.
c. 360 consistent surface
All the way up to 14k polish.
Very important clean your rock and discs throughly between stages, this avoids cross contamination.
After about 360 grit use a magnifying headset and really good lighting to make your consistency checks, both wet and completely dry. I use a new paper towel for each stage. Seajay uses 100% cotton cloths.
Most important, don't move to the next grit until the rock finish is completely consistent for the current grit.
You'll get there Julie, dont rush...enjoy the zen of the polish 😉 😎 😌 😀
Julie one more point 👉 If you get to a certain grit and realize that you missed a scratch, go back to the grit in which you can remove the scratch and start over from that grit👈 this takes very close dry inspection at every grit.

We absolutely 💯 % love it. Wondering how we ever got along 🤔 without it. In fact I'm just finishing up edits on a brand new "Polishing Secrets" show as I ✍ this. This upcoming show features an Amethyst Sage w/ dendrites which is unique 👌.
But onto your question, if you end up picking up one, think hard on the 6" verses the 8", the only issue being the rock size you can work with.
We've also heard from a friend who owns an 8" that she wished she'd bought a 6"...LOL 😆 🤣 😂
